shield is the quickest way to unlock guard, IIRC staff gays get it at level 30 or some shit.

        Anonymous

Magic only gets good in the late game, which is why Staff is the best "eventually". For most of the game though, Staff has a god awful ability spread, and is probably the most difficult choice for casual play at least.

It depends on what version you are playing. Staff always get bonus MP buts gets fricked over hard in FM by learning Second Chance at level 90. Staff is probably the "optimal" choice but I always played with sword or shield because their skill spreads make the game more fun to play.

In Z2 and 3, ranks unlock EX skills. You have to enter a stage with at least an A rank to get the boss' skill from them. In Z4 you get EX skills from doing the stage with the "hard" weather instead. They're all sort of gimmicky though.

I fricking hate games that lock shit behind ranks. I started the collection and beat Z1 and noticed the ranks but I thought it was like sonic tier where it did nothing. That's so annoying, now I'm constantly going to be thinking about that. I shouldn't have asked. Also sidenote just want to say the visual and audio upgrade from Z1 to Z2 was huge and the intro sequence was cool too. it even had the old pause screen because it was before your upgrades. Because if you're just playing casually, they don't. A lot of modern gamers hate "missing out" when it means they need to be good at the game in order to complete the game.

              Anonymous

I think Gunvolt 3 did good with the rankings, at least on a level to level basis, where it doesn't penalize you for getting hit by losing the cool backing track of the levels. Gunvolt 3 is just air combo autism though so I'm not sure it's much better.

              Anonymous

Gunvolt is much better for its focus on rankings. I'm not crazy about how the Zero games do it with locking EX skills behind it, but it's enough of a focus in Gunvolt that you can get a lot more out of the game than you would without it, the levels are fun to learn.

                Anonymous

I wanna get into learning Gunvolt like I did with Zero, though I think the "lose all your points if you get hit once" thing of GV1 is kinda intimidating, whereas in Zero you can get an S-Rank even if you get hit a few times.

Or maybe I'd be pissed that there's content locked behind replaying at all if I only wanted to go through it once. A lot of japanese games seem to be under the assumption I want to go through a game and then do it again immediately. I don't replay stuff in general even among the things I really like. It's almost insulting if a mid game thinks its worth more of my time when there are hundreds of other games in my backlog to get to

I don't mind it per se it's just that most of the time I think there should be more than one option other than ranking perfectionist non-sense but I get why it's there. Maybe I should've worded it better because cool content being locked isn't the heart of why I hate it. Why I actually hate is due to story content being locked behind ranks which these games doesn't do think(I don't know yet I've only beaten(Z1 and Z2)

        >Making an unlosably easy game with rehashed le retro grafix?
No? They did the Android/iOS versions with the Life and Continue System in-tact while rebuilding the game from the ground up with Widescreen.
SEGA's Team B, probably the one in Shanghai who handles ports, handled the No Lives implementation of the Android/iOS build into Sonic Origins, but that mostly was implemented since IGN constantly b***hed and moaned about Mania being "too unfair because of the dated life system" when they couldn't get past the Green Hill Loop.
        >Nah the upgrades are perfectly paced and hard mode proves you never needed them anyway if you're good enough at the game to not just spam charge attacks everywhere
The Upgrade system filters a lot of newcomers as a whole. Right now we need less of that given the state of the Mega Man series being trapped in perpetual Classic Limbo whenever we get another Mega Man entry.

Strangely enough, if you go out of your way to grind like crazy just to be able to use those cyber-elves, you can make this the easiest game possible. We're talking remove all spikes, you get a bunch of hp and armor, bosses take more, if you use the cyber-elves you basically turn on cheat codes and it's balanced I guess because through normal play you might have enough points to spend on 2 or 3 in a single playthrough.

      >The sequels get harder
No they don't , actually it's the opposite and the games get easier with each installment. Zero 2 , 3 and especially 4 are easier because the game designers got the hang of how the gba handled , even though there were some mishaps here and there (like the instakill molten rock jump) it's alot better than megaman zero 1's bullshit final stage

S ranking is easy and I could consistently do it on first attempts when I finally played 2 for the first time when the collection came out.

It's the GBA screen size fricking it up, and Inti deciding pretty big sprites was more important than being able to read the level. Even fricking bosses disappear to the sides, while fricking Mega Man on the fricking NES was able to show everything.

I'm playing through all the mega man games, should I even bother with zero 1? how bad is it compared with the following entries? my only experience with it was getting filtered by I think the first real boss and getting frustrated by shit jumping at you from offscreen with no time to react

The Zero games are a lot better in most regards than the majority of the X series... though that admittedly isn't saying much. Still, they're a good time as soon as you get over the initial difficulty hurdle and get used to the controls and fast pace.

The atmosphere of Zero 1 is unlike any of the sequels, it lacks the qol from the later entries but it's still an amazing game, don't skip it

ok bros, I won't skip it then, it's the game I'll play next

The worst part about Zero 1 is the Game Over system.
You fail missions when you run out of lives yet the plot continues.
It's honestly better to just reload your save when this happens.

But otherwise it's a great game.

Yeah, I had to restart the game the several times to get the level order down.

Learn to walk instead of dashing everywhere. A lot of first timers will move almost exclusively with dash and wonder why the game is pushing their shit in.

Megaman Zero games are hard if you avoid using Cyber Elves. With Elves, you can bruteforce your way to victory pretty easily. Yeah, you'll get a bad ranking and the game will make fun of you with bad codenames, but you can complete the game all the same.

Also, the big pro-tip that the game doesn't tell you is that control Type B is completely superior to Type A. Type A is the one where L-Trigger is a modifier that switches between your main and secondary weapon. Type B allows you to freely use your secondary with L, which includes being able to charge your main and secondary at the same time (though I avoid that, that'll fricking strain your hands like no tomorrow)

He can kill you fast but his pattern is simple and obvious. I think most people just dont experiment much and if they die more than once that is thier idea of "hard"

            Anonymous

I don't think the biggest problem with Aztec Falcon is people being unable to learn the pattern, it's the added pressure of having a time limit on top of everything. In the cases of a lot of X/Zero series bosses, you can just hang around walljumping out of the boss' reach to observe their attacks from a relatively safe distance and learn their patterns on your first attempt. Aztec Falcon puts the pressure on you to figure out how to beat it fast and efficiently, which results in more risk-taking and costly mistakes.

Aztec Falcon was the only boss I could beat. The desert guy was a b***h, the elephant was a b***h, the raid on the base boss was a b***h, I hate them so much. I used to literally pull my hair out as a kid playing Zero. How could anyone actually play this without screaming? Mega Man 1 is the only one I can beat btw, no glitches.
      >you're autistic and moronic that's why
Where do you think you are? If you aren't autistic and moronic then you don't belong on Ganker. You're supposed to be picking up Timmy from baseball practice and grilled steaks on the barbecue with your coworkers and drinking beer.

I beat it when I was 9 too, on the Anniversary Collection. Got Zero for the GBA used at some point afterwards and to this day I can't even reach some of the bosses, let alone beat them. Maybe I'm just cursed...

If Mega Man Zero 2 didn't have the weapon levelling it would be the greatest action platformer ever made.

  51. 2 months ago

You can bash your head against the wall with Zero 1 and win, it just has a lot of contrary systems and technical limitations working against it that make it unfun. We're talking about a game that will throw gotcha enemy attacks off the GBA's tiny screen every few seconds, expects you to grind out weapon levels so your arsenal doesn't feel like shit to use, and slaps you on the wrist with rankings for having any curiosity about the cyber elf system. Game's got its issues but the cyber elves will also carry you to the credits if you want them to.

    >The Zero series and Gunvolt are based on two very different concepts," says Tsuda. "When we created the Zero series, our mission was to create a difficult action game — a really satisfying, difficult action game. So we had items like the Cyber Elves that would help you out, but using them would incur penalties. So basically to be able to accomplish the game, you have to become a better player... a good action game player.
    >However, with Gunvolt, I deliberately changed the concept. We added game systems that would make it possible for anyone to clear the game. My image for the game was that people who can play halfway through Super Mario Bros. could clear this game. That’s the difficult level I was shooting for. However, I also wanted skilled players to be satisfied, so that was a secondary goal.

    >Inti Crates stated Zero is too easy, you can learn from mistake and it will become easier
    >They made Gunvolt and called it is opposite from Rockman Zero. The time you play it will become harder and harder

I didn’t think they were too hard, but they definitely have a bunch of poorly implemented features like the ranking system.
Who adds a ranking system then denies the ability to re-attempt for a better rank? Why tie maverick abilities behind high ranks? It’s stupid

Z1 definitely had a lot of bullshit difficulty because of sudden spikes or jumps where it was impossible to see where you'd land, so it would always either be a pit or spikes. 2 was better, but still really hard. Anything after 2 being too hard for you is your fauit
