gen 3 is in a limbo, I really only think that it can be grouped with gen 4
but I do believe that natures, abilities, and generally better movepools lead into modern design than early gen design. does anything run normal moves anymore?

I get your point but I feel gen 2 as distant mechanically from gen 1 as 3 is from 2. It had the special stat split, held items, 2 new typings, many battle fixes that stayed through the series (Hyper beam mechanics, crits rework, etc), breeding and friendship... I think Gen 1 to 4 exist in a continuum of generational changes, while 5 was the first to decisively break with the past and 6 onwards consolidated the change

I think each of the first four gens are pretty great to play, honestly. they each have a real sense of game design where you can kind of understand how diversity and limitations were considered
I love the later gens, too, but they really feel like kitchen sink designs. a little bit of restraint is good.

Personally I think 5 is about the same mechanically and is a lot better than 3 and 4, but this seems controversial to say around here for some reason.

Gen 5 had basically zero changes from Gen 4 mechanically. It's mostly the arrangement of those mechanics that are different, which can lead to some issues occasionally. Compare that to Gen 6 with the major change to type matchups and the thing that would eventually codify the generational gimmicks designed to sell toys and the difference becomes obvious. That's not to say there's no crossover with the design decisions between Gen 5 and 6, but 3 and 4 also significantly contributed to the process that got us there and Gen 7-9's different directorial style sent things in a bit of a different direction anyway. I think honestly the major contributing factor to what is and isn't modern Pokemon is the release schedule more than anything, especially with how it negatively impacted Gen 7-9. It doesn't help that it took until Legends for them to make major changes to a significant number of the Pokemon models, they were using the same base quad models and probably the same source textures from XY to BDSP.

Gen 2 is a Gen 1 ROM hack
and Gen 3 sprites are very similar to Gen 2

Gen 2 is a direct sequel to gen 1, so it will always be grouped with it. Gen 3 is when the new generation new region etc. formula became standardized.

IMO you can divide Pokemon into

      Retro: Gen 1 + Gen 2 1996-2001
      The days of Pokemania

      Classic: Gen 3 + 4 2002-2009
The post Pokemania days of the 2000s

      Post Classic Gen 5: 2010-2012
      The stagnation

      Modern: Gen 6 + 7 2013 -2021
      The downfall

      Post Modern: Gen 8 + 9 2022 - Current
      How we got here

It's not Nugen, but it's not in the same category as gens 1 and 2 either. Gen 6 is when I would argue when nugen starts, but it still feels different from gen 8's and 9's type of nugen.

Though arguably, Gens 6-7 can be considered Silver Age now.

I quit SwSh two hours in, gigantamax is one of the worst and laziest things ever.
And of course dexcut but /vp/ is always contrarian about that.

I think the best way is just to have more categories instead of trying to force larger groups with stretches
    >old
    Gen 1
    >transitional old
    Gen 2
    >new
    Gen 3
    Gen 4
    >transitional new
    Gen 5
    >nu
    Gen 6
    Gen 7
    >transitional nu
    Gen 8 (SwSh, BDSP)
    >post-nu
    Gen 8 (LA)
    Gen 9

It has nothing to do with quality, which is where a lot of people get stuck. Focusing more on design ideas and dev interviews gives a pretty clear view of what they were thinking during each game, which is a better way of dividing them.
