Until Gen. 4 I can't say that we had bad starters.Even if someone didn't like something like venusaur it's clear that they are cool and enjoyable.
It actually was very well balanced in this regard. People could have arguments about which is better (and they still do) and it was fun.
Gen. 5 broke the mold because after it, it turned into what starter was less shit and not what starter was cooler.

Its personality is inspired by emperors/leaders. But being prideful doesn't take the concept far enough that I'd say its a jobmon. It has no lore about leading troops, or about trying to take control of its environment, or about them vying to be leaders of their pack. It's just haughty.

fwiw I don't buy into the 'jobmon = bad' meme, I just think a lot of them look extremely shitty ugly. Empoleon isn't a jobmon but even if he was wearing a tricorne or laurel wreath or something he would still look pretty cool. I dislike Samurott on the other hand because why in the hell would you go "bipedal otter > bipedal otter > quadruped sea lion" if you were designing a water type samurai? and it also just looks awkward and uncool to me, weirdly reminiscent of an inflatable pool toy

Can you tell the difference between subjective and objective

Don't talk to me until you explain the difference between those two

Everyone sane agrees that it's a bad design. Deal with it. You need an irrational emotional attachment to not see it. I picked that line for my first BW run because it was the best starter in theory but I don't let that disconnect me from reality.

Why all this mad talk about my boy Samurott?! He's awesome! Sure its stats ain't great compared to others but he's definitely one of the better designed starters out there.

That forced pose is the only way you can make Samurott look good because it ignores the original awful anatomy and hides other design blunders (I know it's from the anime, it doesn't help your case), such as the clumsy integration of the blades in their arms (nobody cares that it's *supposed* to evoke the look of a war mount, it looks retarded in practice).

It's not wrong to like the concept of Samurott or enjoy the final result despite its flaws but treating it as a genuinely good design and pretending that it's misunderstood or that there is something wrong with the people who don't like it is what makes everyone consider you a bunch of idiots.

Their lore, promotional artwork and 3D animations focus on the use of swords. It is never depicted using projectiles by default. The SpA stat is a nice reference to samurai, if it was intentional, but to think it "seems more like an archer" requires grasping at straws. It is a conclusion that you have to aim for, instead of reaching naturally, by ignoring everything else.

How delusional Empoleonfags are. There's a huge difference between Empoleon's obvious designed jabot and a Emperor Penguin's white belly. And like I said, a tridant is a human weapon and it being pasted on it's face doesn't change the fact that it has a human weapon on it's face. Empoleon is clearly inspired by human culture more than it being just a quirky steel penguin.

it does not look like a jabot
having a trident incorporated into its design doesn't have anything to do with being an emperor
if you want to say that it "is inspired by human culture" sure. that would be equally true if his body is supposed to look like a white shirt with a blue suit and necktie (which I still think it is) or if it's supposed to be a jabot. nobody said anything to the contrary. but 'inspired by human culture' isn't synonymous with 'jobmon' so I don't think that's relevant to the question at hand

This argument is stupid, trying define what falls into counting as job inspiration and not. What's important about jobmon is how much their theme overwhelms freedom of personality and makes them feel like a person or mascot costume. Gen five mons still feel flexible with all sorts of natures, six was toeing a line by giving them some clear RPG roles, but still has freedom of design (shame it's ugly). Gen 7 went downhil because then all the starters went from cute little animal friend to specific interest and personality while also looking absurdly human-like. 8 followed suit and now it's hard to keep hope for 9.

The first generations were literal animals and ugly designs, when will you accept that modern CAN and IS good and sometimes better than old??

I actually like this mon a lot but I expect them to completely uglify it the moment it evolves and it makes me sad.

Why all this mad talk about my boy Samurott?! He's awesome! Sure its stats ain't great compared to others but he's definitely one of the better designed starters out there.

While I agree that they were the last good set of starters they also started the awful theming of starters we have now. Theming is why we have so many shit and furbait starters

    >Gen 4
Mythology. World Turtle, Sun Wukong and Poseidon/Neptune

    >Gen 5
Royalty/Leaders. Samurai, Chinese General and French Nobility

    >Gen 6
    D&D Classes. Fighter, Mage, Rogue

    >Gen 7
Entertainers. Luchadore, Singer and Trickshooter. Also extinct animals

    >Gen 8
British pop culture icons. Spy(007), soccer player, punk drummer (punk started in the UK)

We don't have the Gen 9 final evos yet but I'd bet they also follow a theme. Gens 1-3 the best because the starters are just creatures and not shitty furbait.

You could argue that Gens 1-3 had themes in the starters as well.Gen 1 being genetics, Gen 2 having a simple one, Gen 3 being nature, but it feels like alot of the games are prioritizing themes over everything else.

What exactly is the actual definition of a "jobmon"? Are there actual identifiable aspectd you can attribute to a starter design that is considered a jobmon or is it hust Ganker slang for "starter I don't like"?

      Anonymous

If you can determine what job or theme a Pokemon is supposed to be before what animal it is supposed to be then its a job mon. Like the Gen 8 starters are clearly a spy, soccer player and drummer before they are a chameleon, rabbit and gorilla. Every post 4th Gen starter has had this problem with the maybe exclusion of Serperior.

So, this is a jobmon, then.

Sun Wukong. Who granted was a monkey man. Gen 4's "jobs" were mythological figures.

I already determined that it's based on Sun Wukong just by looking at him and I'm sure many did as well due to grewing up with DBZ and learning about Sun Wukong from there.

Yes Gen 4 was the start of the "jobmon" idea. It just wasn't as blatant about it as say Gen 6 onwards.

I would say that the ideas of Sun Wukong, the World Turtle and Poseidon were a little less obvious to normie children than say samurai or luchadore and I wish they had stayed at the point where the theme took more than a glance to tell what it was.

Samurott's theme is only obvious in English. The original name was "demonic sword user", blame the localization team

                >Pokedex entries talk about drawing and sheathing its swords faster than you can blink like samurai are claimed to

No its still obviously samurai themed

I actually didn't like them. I think D/P was the first time, when I was a teenager, that I actually just boxed a starter for the whole game. I love the region and cities and minigames of Sinnoh, but the only pokemon I can remember I liked at all from that generation was Lopunny (male) and Vespiquen. I will not say something nice. I will demand pokemon contests come back.

Why can't we use "thememon" instead? While Torterra doesn't have a job, its definitely themed after a mythological figure(World Turtle) like the other two(Monkey King and Poseidon/Neptune)

      Anonymous

Because all the post 4th Gen starters were jobs.

      Samurai, Chinese General, French Nobility
      Fighter/Paladin, Mage, Rogue/Ninja
      Luchadore, Singer, Trickshooter/Archer
      Soccer player, Spy, Drummer

Gen 4 is the only "jobmon" that aren't actually jobs.

Because "jobmon" has a negative connation to it, and using "thememon" would include the starter trio that the same people crying about jobmons like and that's a no-no. Basically, jobmon = thing I don't like.

Infernape is the best starter ever, period, pretty much elevated gen 4 starters to the best line-up, even though the others are awesome to. The order this comic should be in,
      >1st panel: Gen 4 and Gen 2
      >2nd panel: Gen 3
      >4th panel: Gen 1
