>Best Indie Game - Sea of Stars
But baldurs gate 3 is indie...
Worse than that, a multiplat won Playstation GOTY. I guess they saw the over the shoulder forest gameplay of RE4 and thought it was a snoy template game, kek.
What is the other plat? PC? If so, it seems like PC is the exception since BG3 won there and that's on everything.
>snoy
>kek
Imagine being this mad at a video game platform. Virgin detected.
>But baldurs gate 3 is indie...
No
It literally is, moron, entirely self funded.
Being self-funded isn't the important part, the important part is being SMALL.
Larian sits at a worldwide 450 man power, wit ha few IN-HOUSE studios. They are not an indie company, they are literally a corporation.
I don't know, boss. Doesn't the independent mean no publishers? They basically answer to themselves only? They don't have an Activision or EA telling them what to do?
What are publishers if not larger indie studios?
Nope.
Indie devs can have publishers, it's often been the case, actually.
Indie does not literally mean independant, it's more complex than that.
because by that logic, M$ is indie.
After all, who do they depend on?
>After all, who do they depend on?
India super pooper 2030
adjective
(of a pop group, record label, or film company) not belonging to or affiliated with a major record or film company.
The same would apply to a game studio.
Doesn't TenCent own them?
Tencent has a 30% stake in their company, like Tencent does with a frickhuge ammount of Tech Corps.
Tencent does not own in any way, shape or form Larian.
Larian is a public corp, so yes, of course Tencent would buy some stakes.
Larian is not a public corp. Their shares are not traded on any stock market.
Private companies still have stock, midwit. SpaceX has it. Tesla did before they went public
Every company has stock you frickwit, even private ones. That doesn't make them public.
So where did that table with shares owned % came from?
That one shitposter keep posting it stating Tencent own Larian somehow, where did those numbers come from?
Either way, Larian ain't Indie.
Swen and his wife are still the majority shareholders but they sold 30% of the company's shares to Tencent to fund future development and expansion. That's how standard VC funding works. It doesn't mean they have any say in how the company is run.
Indie always referred to small, unaffiliated, groups that churned out unrefined products. Self publishing alone was never what constituted being considered "indie". It follows the same generalizations as indie music and films. Going by this dumb frick logic Rockstar is indie, and so is Nintendo. So then you should be asking why TotK didn't get nominated for that same award.
tl;dr you're just moronic
>It follows the same generalizations as indie music and films
>They are not an indie company, they are literally a corporation.
Every indie dev with a brain files their taxes as a corporation to make shit like healthcare and travel tax deductible.
Not my point.I'm not talking about legally being a corp, i mean literally, being a corp as we know them.
There's a Larian studio in my city, and i'm not on the same continent as their QG.
That alone should tell you how big they are.
Sir, do not redeem
>Not my point.I'm not talking about legally being a corp, i mean literally, being a corp as we know them.
The law is non-negotioable. One man corporations exist, and there is no size limit to being an indie studio.
>as we know them
lol, as (you) know them, but you're a moron with an infantile understanding of how the world works.
So M$ is indie then?
Because to my knowledge, anything indie is defined as a small, independent studio not owned by a larger one.
SMALL
M
A
L
L
>Because to my knowledge,
Your knowledge is wrong.
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/indie
i figure you're the one in the wrong here.
Small is the operative word, moron. Larian is small compared to the likes of Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, EA, Activision, Etc who have tens of THOUSANDS of employees. There is no consensus for size limit of indie status, so Larian is just as much an indie as whatever 2 man jerkoff session made Sea of Stars when both their games are getting pitted against the games made by the juggernauts of the industry.
>Larian is just as much an indie as whatever 2 man jerkoff session made Sea of Stars when both their games are getting pitted against the games made by the juggernauts of the industry.
Anon, Larian IS a giant in the industry.
Just not a juggernaut like the mega corps themselves.
You're stupid, and i'm going to sleep.
>Your knowledge is wrong.
No, yours is. Indie always meant small.
Horrible coping mechanism. Stop posting. Not only are you moronic for saying they're small, you're trying to compare a single studio to a full blown corporation like Microsoft and Sony. Both of those companies are not just video game companies.
>you're trying to compare a single studio to a full blown corporation
Anon, the comparison is appropriate because Larian is also a corporation, a SMALL one.
I'm not going to bother replying to you again after this because you're a fricking moron. But no, they are not. Larian is a European company. According to European regulations, any company that has 250 employees is, categorically, considered a medium sized enterprise, and Larian has over 450 employees. They are, factually, not a "small company". You're trying to call Larian an SME when anyone with a fricking brain would know you're a moron tor claiming this.
Your dumbfrick logic hinges on the belief that "small is comparative" which makes no sense because following this logic, everything is small because something bigger exists. You would argue that 1 billion is a small number because 2 billion is bigger. A Hatchback whale is bigger than an Elephant, but no one with an IQ above 80 is going to call an elephant a small mammal.
Shut the frick up, dumbass.
Indie literally means independent. Literally and metaphorically.
The "correct" definition is "no publishers", but it should also include no major investors, no big govt grants, no stocks/stockholders or anything like that.
Larian is absolutely NOT indie, they've got too many outside investors like that guy with the copypasta image always says, not just Tencent. Plus, even by the "wacky Twitter leftie NPC" standards, they've got WAY too much money and too many employees to be indie, they'd get lumped under the "evil 1% bad guy" label if it wasn't for how sex-positive BG3 is and how many diversity points Larian earned in the character creation.
Another dev that kept getting the "indie dev" title was the guy that made Stardew Valley, but that case was always a bit of a gray area because he USED to be published by Chucklefish, but he separated from them a few years back and now he's technically indie... but most of the game's funding and development was overseen by Chucklefish, so IDFK.
Either way, the "it's indie" defense gets a bit tossed around as a defense pretty often, Zenith VR, a VRMMO that ended up being complete ass, it had this really ravenous fanbase for a while where it could do no wrong and that it was the perfect MMO and whatever else, but a lot of the defenders kept talking about how it's indie and any negatives (haha there aren't any) were a result of it being a small studio funded by Kickstarter (Just ignore the millions of dollars the game got from grants and donations from various companies funding VR endeavors.)
Actually, frick, this happens a lot with VR games, Legendary Tales had it too.
>The "correct" definition is "no publishers", but it should also include no major investors, no big govt grants, no stocks/stockholders or anything like that.
so Valve is an indie company?
Honestly, kinda, but they're also technically publishing themselves whenever they make a game since they own the storefront and any/all advertising on it, so it's another bit of a gray area.
They don't really develop too many games though, so it doesn't come up much.
I guess my final verdict for Valve is that they could go either way depending on your definition of indie, I personally lean them a bit away from the label, though.
My guess is that they consider all the chatter about which companions are best to be gay with as "best", so they won there, though I don't know what the other nominees are, so take this observation with a grain of salt.
Sea of Stars is a better game to be fair.
>indie
>funded by tencent
Why are lariancels so braindead?
>game machine game of the year
why don't they just call these "awards" what they're really are: runners up
>Xbox Game of the Year - Starfield
Honestly that's the only award I disagreed with.
What;s your xbox game of the year?
I choose SF cause i literally don't know any other m$ game out this year.
I probably would have picked Lies of P over Starfield.
That's a microsoft game?
Good choice then.
Forza
>41st Golden Joystick Award
There's been 41 of them? This is literally the first time of me hearing about it.
are you underage?
I've been on Ganker probably longer than you were born newbie, and I've never seen Ganker talk at all about these awards until now. They either talked about the VGAs or the GankerGAs.
You're acting as if Ganker somehow matters. It almost sounds like it's your only source of gaming news, that's just sad.
Ganker wasn't always this cancerous, it used to have standards.
>moving the goalposts
https://www.gamesradar.com/golden-joystick-awards-2023-nominations/
In every applicable category id be saying phantom liberty wins but its not even nominated.
Yeah, because it's mediocre.
It is a DLC anon
I dont see why thats important
its like 20h of highest quality gaming content released this year. You do same work to do sound, visual, story, gameplay design as you'd do with a full game
I'd figure GOTY is going to be a back and forth between TOTK and BG3 across various outlets, but I think BG3 is going to earn more because it came out of nowhere.
Bear status?
I honestly enjoyed the characters and story more in this game than in BG3. Was a great breath of fresh air and is very poignant. BG3 definitely isn't bad but I wish these award shows were made by people who actually play games because STASIS Bone Totem is genuinely great and deserves more recognition and in my personal opinion has a better narrative than BG3.
Looks really interesting
But to be fair bg3 found the perfect formula in making the dialogues full 3d scene and actually have enough husbandos and waifus, Astarion is pretty popular with gays and women and those advertise your product for free
This is why Starfield failed, everyine is too fricking ugly to look as
Even death stranding as controversial as it is managed to get enough people hooked thanks to the designs
Im not gay or a woman and I loved astarion. Bg3 was simply a good game, even though grifters are trying to manipulate people into thinking its bad. I played bg3 for 150hours straight and that never happens with modern games. Im normal weight, white, over 130iq, testosterone levels above avg.
Bone Totem was great, but apparently, the journos never played this game.
>not a single nomination for hogwart's , not even best visual design
lmao they're still seething.
>Nintendo Game of the Year - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Some DLC from a game nobody plays anymore is Nintendo's GOTY
Pikimin 4 should have won
>Some DLC
It's not DLC
I heard Troy Baker was absolutely fuming during the entire event, is there footage of that?
Why would he be fuming?
The crowd wouldn't shut the frick up and the production was a complete shitshow
When BG3 was getting the best story prize the fricking mics were muted
This is why we'll never have game award/showcase events with live crowds anymore, and why E3 is permanently dead.
>This is why we'll never have game award/showcase events with live crowds anymore
What are you talking about, VGA is literally a live event
>Nintendo Game of the Year
Why is this a thing?
Why don't all the other thousands of studios get their own "game of the year" category?
you can fit 5 europeans in the average American waistband, so by American standards Larian has 90 employees.
Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox got their own categories and Ultimate Game of the Year was the best overall.
Starsisters.. it's coming home!!!
>Xbox Game of the Year - Starfield
>GOTYs are mostly multi plat games
consoles really have nothing going for them huh. RE4R GOTY.. heh. Not Spiderman 2? Hilarious.
Spider-Man 2 came out too late to be nominated. It'll be in next year's list.
>Golden Joystick Award
what is this?
Hi Robert
>Xbox Game of the Year - Starfield
HAHAHA
Well, it was either that or Redfall.
>best game community: baldurs gate 3
how the frick do you even judge that metric
Least toxic? Most engaged? No idea.
Buit BG3 community is toxic as all frick. Even Reddit hates them at this point. But they are fanatically engaged, I'll give them that.
>Best Storytelling - Baldur's Gate 3
We are scraping the bottom of the barrel here, if BG3 wins Best Storytelling.
Someone's really mad.
>Best Game Community - Baldur's Gate 3
Wait, what?
If anything, BG3gays are the most toxic shitheads since the TLOUgays.
>PlayStation Game of the Year - Resident Evil 4
HUH YOSHITPEESISTERS?!?!?!
I loved ff16 and re4r
Ff16 shouldnt have been PS5 exclusive
If they were absolutely 100% accurate, FF16 wins because RE4R is on PC but it seems like this list gives PC a pass because BG3 won the PC award and it's multiplat.
re4 is on xbox too right?
shit is moronic, they didnt want to give xvi an easy win
Platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S
Yes. It is on everything but switch.
And its not on switch because switch cant handle it but it would have been on switch 2 too, hell re4r complete edition will likely be one of the first announcements for switch 2
With this I'm not saying ff16 would have been, its too flawed for that, but that it killed its momentum and lost like 70% of potentian costumers is a given
it was on PC for years and the console version is wonky
I too think exclusivity harmed ff16 more than it should
>Most Wanted Game
LMAO
>Xbox Game of the Year
MY FRICKING SIDES
>PlayStation Game of the Year
STOP, IM FRICKING DYING
>Best Multiplayer Game
KILL ME AHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA
>2023 might actually give us "Zelda lost" and "Spiderman lost"
And I thought 2022 giving us "God of War lost" was spicy.
