Legend of heroes series ruined persona for me especially since the world building in P5 was a step back.

I feel the same. Persona 5 was fun, but Trails' world building is so interesting compared to Persona. I'm glad I decided to check out Trails on a whim.

I still to this day don't get people's thing with Persona. I've given the series an open mind but I just don't see it. Persona 3 bored the shit out of me.

It's a dating sim series with a decent stories, not exactly an RPG. Should tell you why

That's the thing though, I don't find that all that compelling. I wonder how people can invest so much time in it. Doesn't interest me at all. Romance in games is one of those things I think is a little too sad even for me.

Honestly, when I played Persona4, I would have preferred it to be just a dating sim VN. While I like persona fusing, and the combat is serviceable enough, I thought those dungeons were a real drag to play through.

I think I had Zelda ruined for me long before playing Zelda. I never grew up with the series, and found it bland and simplistic when I tried it. OoT for example does sorta feel like a super bare skeleton of something like Dark Souls.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand that Zelda's cult status is earned for it inventing shit.
No shit OOT is Souls skeleteon, because that's what it is. It's THE first game to refine aiming and combat principles that were used pretty much in every 3D game with swords ever since.
Same for BOTW - it solidified open world design, that is actually OPEN and not a check list map, that was prevalent for the previous 20 years.
TOTK now pioneered this "assemble your shit" principle that will most likely be incorporated in a lot, if not most games moving forward.
Zelda's worth is primarily historical and technical, not entertainment.

BOTW was one of if not the earliest example of an open world game that didn't direct you in any one specific path and didn't throw checklists/quest markers at you everywhere. you were not only freely open to just encouraged to do whatever you want, but literally told you that all there is to do is what you want to do

People like you make me embarrassed to have been a Zelda fan. BotW didn't fix shit, it just creates more problems for open worlds by presenting itself as one when it's really just a limited sandbox in disguise. It throws out all structure, progression and level design while still going for the same lazy copy paste filler format and introduces other issues like durability instead of depth. TotK is more of the same, only with even more bafflingly shitty decisions and a story so fricking terrible and apathetic to the series it's supposedly apart of that it makes spongebob look like shakespeare. Neither of them innovated or invented anything and neither of them are zelda games, they're the worst blend of minecraft, skyrim, and ubisoft.

Have I seen things in game 2 that I wish was in game 1 because it would make game one better? Sure, but if it's a good game it's a good game.

Everything could be better because nothing is perfect no matter how much remarketers are paid to give 10/10s but a good game is a good game even if it could be better.

Since I don't have BPD (untreated or otherwise) making me go to extreme black and white positions like way too many people seem to online it can't ruin it.

FFV, for example, is the best JRPG to exist but it also started the ATB cancer in this series. Could've been better but it's still awesome regardless of that flaw.

Americans have poisoned the world with their politics in recent years, so now every online discussion has to come down to an argument of one thing being better than everything else and you're a moron if you like the other thing. Elden ring and Zelda aren't even in competition, they aren't on the same systems, there's no reason to force yourself to hate one and love the other

Budokai / Tenkaichi just spoiled the next 20 years of DB games for me. I don't give a frick about Fighterz, or the multiple ps3 titles trying to mimic a fraction of tenkaichi's power, or the PS4 generation full of games with half assed combat.

But I'm not the only one, Tenkaichi 3 was so good that fans are still modding it to this day and call it Tenkaichi 4. They never did a better roster, story mode and gameplay since then.
I also like Budokai 3. As a fighting game it's much superior to the ADHD Fighterz combos

Same but it was Burnout Revenge, never played 3. The sheer power of destroying all traffic and tackling other cars, and also the visual effects, it looks like your car is a rocket or something at reality warping speeds, and the soundtrack was amazing.
Really I never got an adrenaline rush like this with any other racing game. The genre effectively peaked for me with that game.

Now after XV and now XVI, I'm realizing Square doesnt bring even half on the immersion some eurojank studio brought back 10 years ago. I did like the 7 Remake but that so significantly smaller of a game than the others so it doesnt feel like it stacks up.

The welding mechanic has a force limit, when two parts exert a force that goes over the limit they break apart, this can be avoided by using certain angles and gluing different parts to alleviate the force applied to the joint.
For instance, that webm has 2 planks glued parallel to each other held together by a cart wheel, when the Big Wheel starts moving, it creates a circular motion that pushes down, if it had a single plank, it would calculate all the force on the upper joint, but by having a second plank, it splits the force between both, this increases the torque in exchange of speed.

I remember Dark Souls 1 being shilled as "What I always wanted Zelda to be" and "Zelda for adults" and honestly they weren't wrong, Souls has been a better Zelda for ages now and I think that moving away from the traditional Zelda formula was probably the right call because of it. As much as I'd enjoy seeing a Zelda game that took inspiration from Dark Souls, I doubt Nintendo would be able to do it justice.

Dark Souls 1 is the only one that feels like that, the rest followed the "prepare to die" meme and removed all exploration for moronic kill rooms.

Dark Souls 2 lost the plot for sure but Elden Ring was a good return to form and gave me old school Zelda vibes.

          Anonymous

Hell no, Elden Ring is the worst of them all, they took what made Dark Souls bad and spread it all over some empty map. What is the purpose of the open world? Enemies can't leave their designated areas, there's no traversal mechanics so it never matters where you are, and they still used the same stupid kill corridor format but now on every single castle and cave. No.

            Anonymous

Zelda to me has always been about the exploration, even with the Souls series I feel like the combat is mediocre at best. But the exploration in Elden Ring? It was excellent at times, stumbling upon dungeons and getting loot that could change how I play, some even having some puzzles to solve? That was Zelda to me and I loved it.

But conversely, the open world nature of both BotW and Elden Ring are a bit antithetical to the classic Zelda formula. OoT had empty fields due to design limitations but the gameplay loop was closer to a Metroidvania where you had to go find upgrades to unlock ways through the overworld to get to new locations and do the same thing. Dark Souls 1 was the closest the Souls formula ever had to that because of how the overworld was designed.

Agree. Elden ring is just shitty dark souls. The only reason people like it is because RR Martin is on it and people are sheep. The second reason is that they never played a single soulsbourne until elden ring. One of my favourite parts of dark souls is the level design. Elden ring's open world just kills that.

it really depends on you build/how you are playing, but the game allows you to switch builds pretty much at any point and at the very least you are getting runes that will allow you to level up/upgrade gear something that will objectively help you to progress.
In TOTK exploring and getting in to combat just depletes your resources and forces you to resupply.
I mention TOTK specifically because I don't remember BOTW having this problem.

Why do some people fixate on shit so much that it suddenly "ruins" something else? I've seen plenty of people saying that "x ruined y for me" as if somehow they want everything else to be just like the thing they're fixating on. Sounds weirdly, and specifically autistic to me. And I don't mean to defend Zelda, but why is it that you stop liking a game because you ended up playing something completely different that has nothing to do with it.

      >Why do some people fixate on shit so much that it suddenly "ruins" something else?

It is an autism think where everything needs to be ranked and so when a game comes out which does something better than the previous game then that game is "ruined".
A normal person can appreciate games excelling at different things; I think Dragon's Dogma has the best ARPG combat against giant bosses, Witcher 3 has the best storytelling & sidequests, BotW has the best way to interact with the world and for the world to interact with you. Haven't gotten around to ER yet but it looks like Open World DS3 so I'm sure it's great. Point is all of these OW games prioritise different aspects

i legit hate this reasoning and its one of the reasons why whe have such a split between "HARDCORE PUSH IN YOUR butthole" games and really casual farming games with like no combat. Just give me a relaxing midcore game like early 3D Zelda where you don't really get threatened by the game and are trying to explore and figure simple puzzles out. I love games that I can fall asleep playing. People are too used to multiplayer games where the skill level of the opponent can be astronomical, thus they need their single player to play like that, too. The worst thing is that they don't play games with actually-good AI like Stalker, they want it to just be generically-hard.

I think some people, like you, fundamentally do not understand the point of games. There is no middle ground. Zelda is never complex or interesting, it's paint by numbers until the end. Only by presenting challenge can games attempt to make players enjoy themselves.

In my mind, there are 3 genres of game. Gameplay games, which necessitate challenge that must be overcome. If you play the game and never encounter any significant hurdle to progress, you just press forward the whole time, it's not a gameplay game. Next, we have story games. Some of these might have challenging segments, but in general, you are playing purely for the story and everything that comes with it. And finally, we have moron games. Basically everything made by Nintendo goes into this category, as well as pretty much all AAA slop. moron games are titles that offer no interesting stories, but also offer no interesting gameplay. TotK really does try and make you have an emotional reaction towards the end of the game with great sound design and nice animation, but it's still a moronic story about Link saving the princess. There's nothing interesting going on. There are no real trials, nothing happens, because the game design is awful and the story stuff doesn't matter.

Dragon Quest IX, but in a bad way. I really liked it until the post-game when I realised I was spending more time fighting Metal Slimes variants and watching numbers go up than actual engaging and varied gameplay.

I realised that grinding in JRPGs is bullshit. And garbage like Metal Slimes aren't some kind fast levelling technique... they're the expectation who's existence devalues of all other encounters and turns progression into a repetitive slog.

Elden Ring is a better take on an open world Zelda than TOTK itself and it feels they were directly inspired by good ideas from BOTW while TOTK mostly added boring repetitive bullshit and gimmicks to the formula.
Nothing in TOTK compares to using that frick huge elevator to access an actually well-designed underground world for the first time. Every good legacy dungeon is BOTW Hyrule Castle tier. The combat is just monumentally better, and you actually have an incentive for exploration. It's also not broken by white enemies making 80% of your already pitiful combat tools obsolete.

I feel like people who directly compare Zelda to Souls have failed to understand either series, and only really understand them in the context of being "guy with sword" games.
Zelda at it's core is a puzzle/adventure game. Souls at it's core is an action RPG. Two totally different genres right off the bat.
The vibe of Zelda is all about being cosy and familiar, and letting you explore a world that feels like a world you would want to be in, whereas Souls is the exact opposite.

You just plain don't understand anything, if you're going to be directly comparing these franchises as if they're the same thing. You don't understand game design. You don't understand art. You don't understand that creator intent is a thing, and that your personal preferences aren't the only gauge of quality. You're basically a ten year old who only understands anything on the level of a playground argument. "My thing could kick your thing's ass, and you're gay".

Criticising the puzzle design of Zelda would be a legitimate complaint, because you're approaching the series on it's own terms, rather than approaching it as if it's trying to be something it isn't trying to be.

I don't agree. I really like the puzzle rooms in BotW. ToTK is probably more of the same. Elden Ring doesn't have stuff like that. That isn't the game that it's trying to be.

          Anonymous

          >ToTK is probably more of the same
TOTK felt like a straight downgrade of BOTW's puzzles because they clearly had no fricking idea what to do with all the zonai part gimmicks they've introduced. A simple rocket bruteforces 90% of them. Temples are a straight downgrade of Divine Beasts mechanically. There's only ONE that actually wants you to build something to move huge parts away but it's also done in the most toddler friendly way possible

      >The vibe of Zelda is all about being cosy and familiar, and letting you explore a world that feels like a world you would want to be in
That's the vibe of nuZelda. Old Zeldas aren't like that at all, not even ones like WW which is only cozy on a surface level. Souls, particularly Elden Ring, is by far and away the closest you'll get to the classic OG Zelda, which throws enemies at you constantly, makes you go through massive dungeons, is cryptic as shit and full of secrets. That's where the real comparison is being made.

And you're being the strawman guy who's avoiding the point. Nobody wants to live in termina during mm, nobody wants to live in hyrule during oot or tp, nobody wants to live in a flooded isolated world with little girls being snatched off by giant birds. Zelda games are about saving a world on the brink of disaster, not comfy I want to live here vibes. Post time skip oot and mm in particular are very similar in tone to dark souls which makes sense as oot was an inspiration for dark souls.

            Anonymous

You do though, because they're full of fun, quirky characters, and cosy environments
The dark elements of those games are there to introduce a sense of peril, and contrast the lighter elements, because otherwise the game would just be Animal Crossing.
I don't know where people get the idea that the lighter tone of Zelda was some kind of mistake, and Dark Souls is what it was "meant to be" all along. You're just flat out wrong about that. What else can I say?

              >I don't know where people get the idea that the lighter tone of Zelda was some kind of mistake
Nobody is saying that. They're saying the whole point is to go on an adventure to save the land from peril, not to want to live there. You remove that peril and you're left with a shell of a game, a far cry from a life sim like animal crossing. Games can have lighter elements in them and still be dark, your image is a good example being from mm.

      >Zelda at it's core is a puzzle/adventure game
Then it fails utterly at this, because the puzzles are braindead.

The best argument for Zelda is "it's a game for kids". But Megaman was a game for kids. The Disney-esque dumbed down mechanics don't make these games more appealing for children, they make them duller for everyone.

And I don't agree. I think Nu-Zelda puzzle design is basically exactly where it needs to be.
You basically want the shrines to be hard enough to make you think, but not so hard that you just don't make progress for extended periods of time. And that's what they are.
You can claim everything was just "baby easy" to you, and I wouldn't be able to disprove that, but I know how I experienced the game, and I've watched multiple other people play it, and that's pretty much the flow of the game for anyone playing for the first time.

          Anonymous

They aren't hard enough to make you think. Maybe the problem is that I have a three digit IQ, and your average Nintendo fan is well below that, but I did about 70 shrines and I found one of them "challenging", which was the pinball one because I didn't know the orange lights were actually switches, it was never explained in game. The rest were solved near instantly, with the first approach 95% of the time. The rest, one iteration was enough to fix the problem with the shitty physics.

It was completely and utterly boring. At no point did a solution make me think "oh, how clever". I've played plenty of games with real puzzles, and they've been pretty entertaining. The shit in Zelda is best described as "busy work".

Souls games are tonally what would have happened if Zelda kept going down the path it was going with OoT and MM. All the "deep lore" stuff people see in OoT and MM. Souls is basically that, without Nintendo either having to begrudgingly acknowledge it, or not acknowledge it at all.

With something like OoT, you have idea like the implications of torture chambers, and people's hands getting cut off, and all these things that sparked a lot of imagination in fans. Souls took that angle, amped it up for 11, and that's why Souls lore is crack to a large number of people.

OoT, tonally, is divided into two halves: a lighter childhood version of the world, and a darker, seedier adult version of the world. Everything's bright and cheerful when you're a kid, but shit gets real as you get older. Majora pushed this tone even further, with a dark, depressing atmosphere, that was literally apocalyptic.

You keep going down this route, and yeah, Souls games are not that far away. Let's also not pretend Souls games don't have humor. Solaire is a goof. There's a character called Big Hat Logan, who's called that cause he has a big hat.

Moments of levity in an otherwise dark and nightmarish vision, whereas Zelda has moments of darkness that punctuate an otherwise upbeat and light-hearted adventure.

You would never have a Souls game where turning into a pink rabbit is a core mechanic. That's not the tone of the series.

              Anonymous

Link turns into a pink rabbit in LttP. I'm talking about a general tonal progression that was going on in OoT, and MM. That's where all the major lore autism for Zelda started, and what got people making conspiracies about timelines, that took Nintendo over a decade to acknowledge.

Souls games are basically everything your N64 era Zelda story nerd wanted the series to be, and From has been serving it up for them on the reg.

MM turned up the quirk to previously unheard of levels. You have tingle, you have a ghost hand in a toilet, you have a Zora rock band, you have aliens abducting cows from a ranch, you have lots of weirdo quirky environments like the Astral Observatory, and the Milk Bar, you can turn into Deku and spit bubbles at people. I'm not sure what game you were playing, but it's not what I was playing.

No. Out of all the games in Nintendo's catalog, Majora's Mask is literally built around an apocalypse, where people become more and more panicked over the course of three days, as they all realize they're going to die. Come on, bro, don't be a Ganker contrarian for once.

Those are dark ideas, in the context of a game that is otherwise bright and fun, yes.
It's not supposed to be Dark Souls. It's not a mistake that you end up playing a good chunk of that game as an adorable little character, hopping on lily pads.

                Anonymous

I think you fundamentally misunderstand what I am saying. The N64 era Zelda games were filled with dark implications, and dark ideas, that people FACTUALLY latched onto, and created head-canon, and speculation, that Nintendo mostly ignored, but eventually relented in concepts like the official Zelda timeline.

If Nintendo instead embraced those elements, and kept going in the same direction for several more games, you could easily land in Souls territory, tone-wise.

                Anonymous

That would be a mistake for the franchise, because those cartoony and fun elements are part of the series identity, and part of what people like about it.

                Anonymous

That is entirely irrelevant from what I am saying. I am saying the tone and aesthetics of the Souls games are like a natural progression of what Zelda could have been if it leaned into the darker elements in it. Do not take this as an affront.

No it's not. Assassin's Creed IS a natural progression of the collect-a-thon N64 platformer. You literally stumbled upon a correct assumption. Just think about it for more than five seconds.

I'm not saying Zelda should be anything one way or another, but there was clearly a market for people who wanted an adventure game with extensive lore, and darker subject matter, and that resulted in the Souls games.

                Anonymous

But would you directly compare Asassin's Creed to Mario 64, and say Assassin's Creed is what Mario Odyssey should have been, or is that moronic?
                >but there was clearly a market for people who wanted an adventure game with extensive lore, and darker subject matter
Yeah, it was called Diablo, or Legacy of Kain, or Shadowman.
It was not called Zelda, and Zelda is not at fault for not being one of those games.

I never said SHOULD. You are trying to create an argument that isn't there, and attempting to be offended. I'm simply saying COULD.

And don't be dumb, dude. You can clearly see the Zelda influence in Souls games. Likewise, saying there was no market for a darker inspired Zelda is just not facing reality, considering Elden Riing is Demon's Souls VII. This is like when the Metroidvania market exploded. Nintendo didn't want to make Metroid? Well have an entire genre of games to fill the void.

The implication that Elden Ring is "the better Zelda" is saying exactly that though. You're not taking Zelda for what it is, and what it is trying to be.

When did I say that? I am not OP. I started this conversation when someone began talking about comparing Zelda to Souls. I added my two cents, in that story, and aesthetically, Souls games capture the attention of people who used to obsess over little details in things like OoT, and Majora's Mask, especially the darker aspects of them.

, which is a reply to

"My thing could kick your thing's ass, and you're gay".

, which I believe is your post, since you've mentioned "guy with sword" twice. I talked about Zelda's tone, and aesthetics, and its penchant for implications, and mystery, and how there is a connective tissue where that Souls games elaborated on.

Diablo II, that one Final Fantasy VII map that used a "battle screen" and played sound clips from the game, that RPG that was one of the first maps to use non-standard player colors so you could play as black, pink and beige, and fricking Poker Defense. All killer stuff

Yes. Fittingly for Ganker at this moment, Neverwinter Nights ruined BG1/2 for me. Just couldn't get over the jank when trying BG1 after finishing NWN

College ruined games for me. Actually studying medieval history makes me point out constant inconsistencies in clothing, armor, weapons, and combat animations. Mount and Blade Warband is the only medieval game to scratch the realism itch but even then the combat speed and mechanics mean you just kinda swing and block wildly at the closest target and hope for the best, there’s no technique to it at all.

      based.
it ruined most games for me.
its combination of rpg, grand strategy and tactics killed most games for me.
hell, even bannerlord isn't in a good spot to topple warband yet.

OoT wasn’t even the best game to come out in 1998. Half-Life, StarCraft, and Thief all mog it.

I almost agree, expect I don't like stealth games so Thief just bores me

I get that but even then Thief is a masterclass in level design and attention to detail. Games TODAY still can’t replicate some of what Thief did.

          >level design and attention to detail
          what?
Although i will grant it that a few early levels were good for the time, with exploration usually leading to extra loot.

It’s not just the extra loot, but how the levels are designed that (usually) allow you to have multiple ways of traversing them. They’re big sandboxes where you’re given a set of tools and told to have at them.

You may be right, it has been like 2 decades or so since i played it.
I do remember the modding scene was very impressive, especially for the time

TOTK is just trash compared to older 3D Zelda games.

Dragons Dogma ruined pretty much any game where you fight and kill big monsters by attacking their toes. Skyrim and Souls are the easy examples and it's not to say I don't enjoy those games, but every time I play one I think about how much better it would be with some form of DD's combat

I wish I could get into souls games, but playing them the correct way is boring.
I love co-op, but it's basically cheating so that's off the table. Same with magic or playing as tank.
At least it's fun to watch speedruns of them if nothing else.

Why don't you just play them the way that sounds fun to you? Who gives a frick about "cheating?"

Well Ganker and souls fans in general kept saying that some stuff is plain cheating. I don't like cheating in games as it generally defeats the point of said game. Like what's the idea of playing Doom with idkfa or iddqd on every level? Yeah fun to mess around but shouldn't be your first playthrough.
I tried DS1 and just after I defeated the minotaur boss thing I heard from Ganker that shields were easy mode and plain cheating. In all honesty it didn't feel that hard to get that far(died only at tutorial when I tried to kill the boss without gear) so it most likely was cheating. Afterall "prepare to die" etc. is a slogan for a reason so if I breeze through the game(or well I usually play slowly and carefully which is kinda noob way after seeing proper gameplay of DS1) it makes no sense.
Then saw proper list of stuff that is cheating and tried to play game the correct way, like not leveling up health or using shields, no using 2h or magic.
I managed to kill bell gargoyles but got bored, it got way too grindy and dodgeroll focused for my taste.
I also tried DS2 as it's considered best due to it's PvP(which is the focus of the series in the end, see the backlash from the co-op mod for ER), but I couldn't get far before getting bored. Wanted to try the PvP stuff even when I really preter singleplayer or co-op stuff but I just couldn't get far enough to experience best parts which was depressing.
I kinda get if you like more grindy stuff and trial and error things. I like grinding in JRPGs for fun often, like maxing out character levels or Sphere grid in FFX. But I dunno, I'll stick to Zelda and co-op RPGs. Most likely BG3 for a while with my sis who I at first wanted to play ER with but neither of us wanna cheat so...

Been watching speedruns of Souls games a lot, fun stuff to see people cheese things, one of my fav things in games on top of glitches

I wish that there was a single fine MH clone, not even a good one. I realize that the entry barrier for making a MonHun is high and Capcom had to make THREE games before it took off with FU but man I want a series to play when I burn out on MH. Soul Sacrifice was cool at least but definitely pretty shallow.

Nioh 2 ruined Souls games to me, at least in combat department
