Because all the journos and shills and all the people who praised that hot garbage reboot to heavens didn't cared about why the hell it had RPG elements, many of the journalists even agreed it was "improved" over the original trilogy despite lacking jumping attacks or aerial combat or juggling. When someone makes an X genre game be it FPS or action or racing or whatever but adds RPG elements on top of it everyone praises it. When someone takes those elements away people are eager to shit on it as "chasing the call of duty/gta/fortnite" audience and tries to write it off without understanding why it's an action game. It's an action game simply because it was designed to be an action game, eikon fights or boss battles or even the grittiness of the story and world would've had 1/10 of the impact without real time combat. It’s actual flaws is pretty weak exploration, boring side quest content (the writing is ranges from fine to good), and off story pacing at two points. The real reason people have been on the game’s ass is because it’s basically a full on character action game now, and FF fans can’t comprehend action gameplay that doesn’t tell them everything immediately or doesn’t have some “push the square block in the square hole” elemental affinities (despite this being a plague on good action game design).

There is no long-term midcore content, or even casual content for players to desire to do; if you don't raidlog and don't have a reason to log on, people DO unsubscribe. One thing Yoshida is guilty of is acting both like people unsubscribing out of frustration with the game's direction or lack of things to do is the same as the 'natural ebb and flow' of players; but that's entirely separate from what you're trying to claim.
Also: new players is the worst statistic to use ever to argue that an MMO is dying because they need to play for over 200 hours to do anything fun and will likely hit a quit point long before end game.
