People who shit on the phys/special split blow my mind, Hitmonchan sucks in comp today but in Gen 1 he wasn't even usable ingame, imagine getting only one cool fighting mon, taking a chance with Hitmonchan, and watching its punching moves do like 10 damage. Glad 've been a hitmonleechad since day 1, but I remember using Chan in stadium as a kid and not understanding why he sucked so bad.
They shit on it because while some pokemon like Hitmonlee got buffed, others just got nerfed. It wouldn't be an issue if Gamefreak was competent/cared enough to do a moveset pass to accomodate the split but they didn't bother.
Perhaps but I don't think nukes like Alakazam and Gengar ever should have (the equivalent of) boltbeam coverage in the first place. GF's real sin is not rebalancing stats of Pokemon designed around pre-split like...nearly everything from Gen 3.
