How did Nioh 1 end up being so disappointing while Nioh 2 ended being one of the greatest action RPG's ever made?

How did Nioh 1 end up being so disappointing while Nioh 2 ended being one of the greatest action RPG's ever made? They're the same game, and Nioh 2 is barely an update over the original, yet the difference in quality is enormous. How does this happen?

I will never play the second game because I know it's just a pointless grindfest through extremely mid levels and content for 5 difficulties.

Who tf said you needed to play through all 6 difficulties? Just get your fill on story mode through normal mode and have a great time

I literally skipped all the story in the first movie game. I don't care about Suzuki Ching-Chong Motorola's rise through the Shorujuitzuewuku-Chun Court where he fought off Goku and General Inuyasha at the Defense of Risumojitsu River. The game is also quite boring on normal.

The default difficulty is a joke and who actually cares about the story of these games, especially 2 with it's silent self insert protag.

It doesn't help that it's yet another game about Sengoku era so everyone who has already played at least one game about it (or read it up somewhere) already knows most of the story. It's always either Sengoku or Bakumatsu, I'm surprised Ghost of Tsushima went for mongol invasion period of Japanese history.

Sure. I liked it because of that, but saw no reason to play it again because I already played Nioh 1. When I get the urge to grind, I just play Nioh 1 some more. There's no appeal to making a new character

I've never seen a point in maxing characters over and over as well. In BL, I usually have 2-3 characters. If I want to spend some time in the game, I'd find something to do with them like grinding the perfect item roll.

I dropped 1 for being too slow and clunky (I also dropped 2 that's because I can never finish games, but in 2 I got way farther in the story), but Nioh 2 was a lot of fun with fight pacing seeming like it was faster and the combos were much smoother.

It did not. It was a solid game N2 built up on.
Several Nioh 1 levels are still worth replaying that game for.

Both have huge issues, especially in their combat, but normalhomosexuals and their youtubers think they are good because muh fast anime combos
Unironically the guy who decided they should have added a God of War 2018 style red flash parries and bullshit magic attacks should be viciously attacked and brutally murdered. Yes I'm totally unironic and you can use this post as incriminating evidence in front of a court because Team Ninja is seriously fricking moronic.
Fluxing is a moronic mechanic, but at least the intention there wasn't just exploiting and cheating stamina (which is awful and lets the player break any common fodder challenge and most bosses) but also stance switching.
Wo Long takes 2 steps forward and 10 back, somehow even doing a worse job than SoP combat design and vastly better soul shielding.
    Really unfortunate series

      >God of War 2018 style red flash parries and bullshit magic attacks

        >Nioh 2's red attacks have literally nothing in common with GoW's unblockables
They do, but they are right that they aren't similar
Nioh 2 burst counter is worse, and it further de-evolved into Wo Long critical attacks. Both heavily control the flow of combat, which means the boss controls the flow of combat

          >Both heavily control the flow of combat

            >W-well, you can counter this very much telegraphed attack with a generalist, safe and easy combat option that will heavily knock down the opponent and do massive ki damage,... or not
Try thinking critically. What does burst counter add exactly? It's another mechanic Team Ninja added to further degrade the Nioh 1 formula into a mindless hack and slash and destroying any semblance of back and forth combat allowing players to easily facemash and neuter almost every opponent, muddling weapon playstyle diversity

That's why human enemies are the best part of nioh, which they also unfortunately filter a lot of players. I love having to play footsies with human enemies to prevent them from regaining stamina. Constantly applying pressure or baiting them into attacking so you can eventually ki-break them is peak nioh gameplay.

Pure 1v1 mechanical fights like toshi are amazing and the most fun I've had in action games.

To me Wo Long devolved into a minigame of how many status effects I can put on the enemy

              Anonymous

You're not wrong but Nioh 1's formula was already degraded by its horrendously poor balance turning every weapon into a 1 move spamfest
I'd rather take an overall much better designed game with 1 kind of superfluous mechanic over a broken mess

            Anonymous

How is it an "option" when burst attacks are all unblockable grabs or heavily damaging attacks that will break your guard and kill you if you try to deal with them any other way and it heavily drains enemy ki.

          Anonymous

Burst Counters enable entirely the opposite. The player already can heavily control the flow of combat regardless of the enemy's stagger potential due to the wealth of commitment in their attacks via stance and Flux. But Burst Counter gives them powerful attacks and a further opportunity for you to reverse them and create notable stagger opportunities on enemies that normally don't offer them. Each one also is better suited to different Burst Counters and the ones you have access to affect how you can control the fight. On top of that you don't even need to Burst Counter them to begin with as every Burst Attack is very much avoidable and some can even offer situationally better punishes if you don't.
I'm talking to BloatBlack person though aren't I? The only one who's similarly obsessed with spreading moronic takes and is incapable of learning a thing every single time it's exposed before he repeats it again.

      Better bosses
      No yokai shift
      No dark realm
      No excessive combo wank
      Builds don't play the same
An actual character for a protagonist instead of a blank slate.

Oh and a troony creator, which must be the reason you like it.

I'd agree with you but 2's story has a ridiculous, satisfying payoff thanks to Otakemaru. Nothing in 1 matches that.

        >ridiculous, satisfying payoff thanks to Otakemaru
I don't get what you could find satisfying or even remotely interesting about him. Nobunaga blowing off the main villain of 1 and fighting William just because before going back to the afterlife to chill with Noh was way better than whatever happened in 2 and is one of the only memorable moments of either game's story.

If you'd like to trade some of the gear customizability for a bunch more mechanical complexity, depth and moveset options to play with, while enjoying the spirit of how SoP encourages you to experiment and explore all the combat options and learn more about them, then Nioh is very worth playing.

Nioh 1 is just bad compared to the imrovements in Nioh 2

Nioh 1 on its own isn't that bad outside of Umi-buzo unless you know the whole gimmick of 'use fire you fricking moronic c**t like the game tells you to'
Outside of that and the optional (OPTIONAL) bosses, the game isn't bad at all.
