It's an improvement.
first is just an elephant with fists.
Second is a copper elephant construction device with cool patterns and a generally fun design.
Types weren't a thing early on, many pokemon were given types retroactively after the concept was introduced.
Sugimori wasn't like "hmmmm... I want to make a poison/ground pokemon" when he drew Nidoking
The upright standing kaijus (rhydon, nidoking/queen, marowak) all got Ground type (Kangaskhan was on Giovanni's team midgame so was likely Ground type in development at some point).
Next gen Donphan also got Ground while being only tangentially related to the type so likely that.
All gen 1 fighting types wear clothes, not even Kangaskhan with a signature punch move and the boxing kangaroo trope got it so that would be highly unlikely. Nothing particularly rocky about it, if Tauros' horns don't make it rock neither would this guy's tusks.
So yeah, probably Ground, if not that then no choice but Normal.
don't be silly, yes the black part is inspired by a tire and even if that part of his body is meant to be literally rubber or rubberlike it's not like donphan is a rubber based organism. should hitmonchan be part ground because it wears rubber gloves?
elephants are mud bathers and mud sprayers and wheels roll on the ground. it's not that deep

>elephants are mud bathers and mud sprayers
This is infinitely more of a stretch, considering Donphan has no connection to this anywhere in its design or lore. The rubber explanation is simpler because it has rubber plating. Ironically your explanation is the “deeper” one.

point me to the pokedex talking about donphan being encased in rubber
the connection between elephants and mud is universally implicit. sandslash design and lore is all about curling up, defending with spikes and slashing never about digging but it is still a ground type as everyone knows pangolins are very adept at digging
Hitmonchan has leather gloves dipshit.
leather also does not conduct electricity. since hitmonchan's body is partially covered by insulative material let's make it ground type because even though leather =/= ground, it's the only way to convey an immunity to electricity. after all, since donphan's body is partially covered by insulative material they made it ground type because even though rubber =/= ground, it's the only way to convey an immunity to electricity.
Do you realize how preposterous that sounds?

Anon, deer and tapirs mud bathe too. Drowzee’s design even reflects this directly with its “muddy pants” look, and neither it nor Stantler have the ground typing. It’s clearly not related to that. It’s also disingenuous to compare boxing gloves (more often made of leather than polymer) as a means of offense to what is clearly a rubber coating shielding a pokemon.
Donphan’s ground typing is most likely a reference to both its rubber plating, and to emphasize its “sturdy body” as children’s fact books at the time would use silly exaggerated feats of durability/height as a means of measurement for trivia. Pokemon even did this with the infamous Indian elephant dex entries; an elephant that was sturdy and armored enough to not be knocked out by a thunderbolt- or even take damage from one- would therefore be fairly exceptional.

*sigh*
drowzee's "muddy pants" are a reference to the double color of tapirs, elephants literally shoot mud with their trunks. boxing gloves do not conduct electricity and they are not offensive, a gloveless fist does more damage than a gloved one, boxing gloves are to protect the wearer so they don't break their fingers/hands. so yes the gloves also have a shielding function.
gamefreak are not out here playing big brain 4D chess with typings. you know what else ground type does besides make you immune to electricity? It makes you weak to grass, it makes you weak to water, it makes you strong against fire. Rubber floats, it doesn't disintegrate with water like soil, plants do not drain rubber of nutrients the way they do with soil, rubber burns unlike soil. This also means that if you look at it from my more naturalistic perspective of elephants the type implications are also silly. Elephants are good swimmers, their tusks take down wood and they are one hell of a plant eater. all this to say they weren't thinking about all these connections too deeply. Take a step back for a second, this debate started because someone claimed Donphan is ground type because rubber does not conduct electricity and even though ground and rubber are not related gamefreak still went for it to make it immune to electricity. This is beyond ridiculous and would never happen.
To this
>How did we go from furry shit to animalistic?
And i thoughtt g*nwunner hated humanoid mons hypocrites
The original pic isn't furshit. It says a lot about you two that you think it is.
bipedal boxer animal isn't furshit because ..?
Because it's not made to look humanoid or to appeal to furries.
It appeals to furries more than a quadruped
Sorry chud, monsters can't be bipeds. The science is settled.
Why is it made of fricking squares and cylinders? Where's the soul????
It looks like one of those little squared Indian elephant sculptures.
>It's based on something so it's good
Which is worse?
The rightfully discarded furryshit from OP
It's literally a bipedal elephant, it isn't even humanoid
??? Weird design to complain about. I thought it was a pretty good Pokemon design.
I like the Elephant in the OP, I'm kinda indifferent on Copperajah but I think Cufant is excellent.
Copperajah is better
It's an improvement.
first is just an elephant with fists.
Second is a copper elephant construction device with cool patterns and a generally fun design.
looks like a Minecraft animal, not even shitposting
>Bipedal furshit
>Kino quadrupedal copperderm
literally my mom’s indian elephant
>furryshit
Why make it punch when its trunk can already work as a limb?
Raichu solos
So what type was this guy going to be?
Normal? Maybe fighting, ground or rock
Types weren't a thing early on, many pokemon were given types retroactively after the concept was introduced.
Sugimori wasn't like "hmmmm... I want to make a poison/ground pokemon" when he drew Nidoking
I see. And what type would they have given him?
The upright standing kaijus (rhydon, nidoking/queen, marowak) all got Ground type (Kangaskhan was on Giovanni's team midgame so was likely Ground type in development at some point).

Donphan is ground type because it’s made of rubber, and typing was the only way they could convey an immunity to electricity before abilities existed.

HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
YO HO HO HE TOOK A BITE OF GUM GUM
my dear wife. rip
Well I mean if it became anything it was likely Donphan first. He looks ok.
More likely they just decided they were making too many "stood upright kaiju thing" mons and he was scrapped and went with more variety in the end.
Probably wanted to avoid copyright from mtg.
what do you mean? which monster do you think they were copying?
