That was because Games Workshop already owns an orc character called Grom. Leaving Grom in Reforged would have given GW an opportunity to sue.

At least, that's what ActiBlizz would have done in their shoes, so they pre-empted it.

he was just side-villain in one tft campaign, and a plain human at that. his efforts as leader of the remnants of lordaeron were an utter failure, probably largely on account of his moronation in running off his kingdom's former allies. where does he need to show up?

He'd been holding together Lordaeron's resistance singlehandedly against the Scourge despite alienating his non-human allies, which made him seem at the very least competent in warfare despite being a blatant racist caricature you're supposed to hate.
He probably would've retaken Lordaeron during the Forsaken rebellion if he had not been forced to job to them.

A terrible consequence of Refunded was that there was this guy on youtube who was remaking the W3 cinematics in his own time, possibly for free, and there were some pretty sweet examples. I know he made most human ones, some orc and one undead. They're also dubbed in various options
He hasn't made anything in one year. Dude was possibly hoping they will be a CV for W3 Refunded but didn't learn that being Brazilian isn't brown enough and didn't get the job.
His stuff is leagues above the stuff the SEA studio made.

They're nice cinematics but how would tje models look top down? Reforged fricked that so badly, probably because Blizz were too moronic to tell the modelers it was for wc3.

I agree with you too, but since they were trying something "new" (as they clearly didn't respect the original artstyle) they could have made the cinematics detached from the actual units.
Idk man - just about any approach regarding the remake was better than what they did

the artstyle got substantially softened up for WoW. might've been a performance thing though, they wanted higher polycounts and better textures and the grungier grittier style of 3 would've been too much extra work to adapt into the higher fidelity

another thing might be that WC3 had really harsh, high-contrast visuals that might've not translated well to the non-overhead camera angle, and might've been exhausting to look at for long durations.

I think wow demystified and simplified a lot to make it accessible and make the factions work. WC3 went more for an amazon/wildling style, while WOW went more for a wood elf style. Although some of the earlier WOW art was decent. I think it also hurt the NE that they were on kalimdor, and kalimdor was a rushjob. So they had less time to make assets to really sell you on them.

Game released just have the LotR films. Classic fantasy was at a peak in popularity. Everyone wanted to play Aragorn or Legolas. Night Elves didn't quite fit the mold, but they were close enough, and I think that slowly shifted people's perception of them, including the devs. They lost their unique touch. That's my theory anyway. In short they should have had the High/Blood Elves in at launch since they cater to that niche better. Would have helped keep the Night Elves as they were.
Similar thing happened with the Orcs. They slowly morphed from a mix of Germanic Barbarians, Mongols, Native Americas, with a little bit of Japanese thrown in into fantasy basketball Americans.

I hate how this happened. Early blizzard made good stuff despite being an a*erican company, now they can't seem to do anything right.

            Anonymous

It's weird, never been able to quite tell where the projection comes from. The most I can say is that Durotar and the Barrens have African animals. But the Orcs aren't native to there, they're colonising it lol.

            >aragorn
True. A lot of NE hunters were legolasses. But I think an MMO also makes design different than RTSes.
In RTSes you can make a faction a hit and run factoin, or a steamroller faction, or a gimmick faction. In WOW NE warriors, human warriors and orc warriors are the same. it would be weird if the orcs have double the HP and damage, NE rides panthers and have bouncing attacks, and humans can control 2 at the same time

Well I think the disappointment is that the Night Elves lost a lot of their wildness and primal savagery. I get that you have to tone down the Amazon stuff because classes aren't gender locked.
Also I was a little incorrect, Blizzard was already downplaying the more unique aspects of the NE in the marketing. I stand by my statement regarding the lack of HE/BE though. Think it would have filled the desired niche more.

Nostalgia hit for anyone that's looking for it

I'm not sure about the controlling 2 thing because that would be a nightmare for the player but I'd be fine with significant racial differences in (vanilla) WoW. Playing a huntress one day and an orc grunt the next.

              Anonymous

              >I'm not sure about the controlling 2 thing
I just transposed footman/grunt/hunteress to WOW. Point is, it is very difficult to do. And from TBC onward it was obvious blizzard was simplifying things a lot. Like making pala/shaman a shared class between horde and alliance. They didnt have time for class unique quests (how they didnt have the time and money, despite the massive success, I dont know), so having a race unique warrior class would be far too much to ask.
              >Playing a huntress one day and an orc grunt the next.
half the problem is that MMO autists only play their main and then complain when they finish all the content after playing 16 hours per day every day

                Anonymous

Some do for sure but there are autists like me who play 16 hours a day and spread it out over 4 servers and 20 characters. I was an altoholic even back in those days. I wanted to see and experience it all. Took me like a year to get my first level 60 because I just loved the pre-60 world so much. Onyxia's lair looked cool and all but there was an entire world out there to enjoy.

The problem is a ton of people played 16 hours a day and put it all in 1 character. Im sure at blizzard the devs were frustrated too.
                >guy plays 16 hours a day
                >complains that after 2 months there is no content left

Or the people who say they have X thousand hours /played on their human mage. Mage can be fun but the same dude every day for over a decade? Come on man...

even vanilla was pushing the boundaries on setting bloat, but at least things like the qiraj had precedent with the nerubians, vanilla had the wisdom to just be a setting rather than a story though, turning WoW into a narrative definitely helped ruin it. Turning the player into the 'chosen one' starting in WOTLK did cement this though.

RTS is seen as non-viable for triple A development. They will probably make some mobileshit game like EA did with C&C. If we're lucky they also allow for some spinoffs, like a SRPG, management game and the like.If not the IPs are just dead.
WOW will remain online for as long as they can milk it. They went from a pure sub model to sub model+cashshop. I can imagine it will take quite some time to completely exhaust WOW to the point of unprofitability.

I dont think blizzard will do very well in the future. They had weak performance lately, it makes sense for suits to pick apart the company and see what they can repurpose and what will be killed.

HotS really did have that perfect fusion of WC3 and WoW style for the Warcraft heroes. You can tell a lot of appreciation and heart went into the models.

I was convinced the hots team was gonna be in charge of everything related to animation and level design in wc3 reforged. I never would’ve guessed blizzard was as moronic as they revealed themselves to be. The hots team was the last based group of people a blizzard game has had, they deserved to be at a better company

of putting them on the job, you let some sweatshop crank out garbage
I never undestood this sentiment. The models are not bad at all, and it's clear genuine effort was put into them. Shit, I don't even think you can call them generic.
You can say the assets do not fit the game or the engine at all, which I 200% agree and it's the reason why reforged looks like shit, but there's a lot of good art in there.

Are people just being contrarian, or do you genuinely believe the models look bad? Or maybe you just don't care how they look outside the game (which is completely fair)? Help me understand.

            >Or maybe you just don't care how they look outside the game
Not him but for me it's this. The models look terrible in game and make it harder to tell which unit is which and how many there are compared to the original graphics. It's not just the models either, the ground textures / trees etc. also look much worse and make the game muddier and less readable.

Then I don't even disagree with you. I'll add that reforge's sound "design" is shit.

garbage is maybe the wrong word. The models are competently made, but they dont mix into the game, they dont mesh. It feels like a stock image. Sure, the composition is good, the image quality is high, the message is clear, but it is sterile so you can use it for anything.
Its hard to express in words, but when I look at the models and animations of HOTS, and I look at the models and animations of reforged, HOTS has a flair and purpose that reforged misses

              >Sure, the composition is good, the image quality is high, the message is clear, but it is sterile so you can use it for anything.
I think you're trying way too hard to hate on this. You may think (like I do), the models don't fit 1. the gameplay, 2. the engine, 3. the atmosphere of the game, but what people wanted, which is a likewise cartoonish version like the original, would be by nature much more akin to mobile game graphics, and much more generic in our day and age. People just flip-flop all over the place between criticizing cartoony styles, realistic styles, and so on.

These models feel like they could fit in some of the older blizzard cinematics, and it would be pretty cool seeing them used on a different game that wasn't an RTS.

Only if they made it round and shiny like Clash of Clans or something. Old WC3 was cartoony but also had a roughness to it that prevented it from being a baby game.

I dunno about everyone, but for me Warcraft 3 never looked cartoonish. Of course proportions were clumsy, but it is understandable since it is RTS game made in early 3d era, readability above all else. And reforged models looks waaaay more unreal and goofy. They push grittiness way too hard.

When I look at WC3 I see an amazing game, even 20 years later. When I look at reforge I see a turd. When I see the individual models of reforged they look okay. But when they are side by side to HOTS models I love the HOTS models and the reforged model looks cheap.

Art is subjective. But when I put these 3 facts side by side I cant help but notice the shortcomings of reforged

WC3's engine was capable of doing some crazy shit. I remember open RPG maps on battle.net that, when certain chat messages were produced, would add aesthetic changes to the character you'd selected, like a weapon or shield to a specific hand, armor, helmets and other cool effects like fire.
                >but what people wanted, which is a likewise cartoonish version like the original, would be by nature much more akin to mobile game graphics
It may be MORE like mobile game graphics and cartoonier, but I don't know if this is what people wanted. The WoW fanbase when I played would ruthlessly shit on pauldrons for instance, but it seems like Blizz somehow thought that huge shoulder pads were what people wanted. There certainly is a lot more detail in the nu-mobile-styled shit, but is that a good thing itself?

Meant to post to this anon

                >but it seems like Blizz somehow thought that huge shoulder pads were what people wanted
I see your point, but I must say that great stories aren't made by customer pandering usually, and Warcraft and its more original concepts are no different.
                Huge pauldrons are irreplaceable.

                >great stories aren't made by customer pandering usually
I think gaygonflight has shown this to be the case, but I am curious as to what the customer demographics for the game are these past few years. Is the WoW fanbase majority queer? Or is the recent stuff pandering to a very vocal minority?
                Also
                >Huge pauldrons are irreplaceable.
It might be a funny meme, but it seriously ruined the design of the human footman

Perhaps the pauldrons weren't proportioned well in WoW, because I remember seeing arthas' fricking huge CMC-300 power armor and thinking he looked fricking awesome. May also be related to the bastard sword he walks around easy with one hand.

In WoW it was just... Fricking big shoulderpads. It didn't inspire the same feeling.

In their defence they were clearly copying the cinematic footmen. Which probably wasn't smart, but I don't think this one is that bad. There's far worse in reforged.

The in-game cinematics weren't that bad, the scale and proportion were handled much better and although you could still make the HAHA PAULDRONS joke, overall they look pretty slick.
Also not to argue semantics but the gold makes him look like the Captain, different helmet though.

But even the pauldrons their don't literally overshadow the head. If you compare that footman's pauldrons to Arthas' in his cinematic appearances, there isn't much of a difference.
The only thing that stands out is a thin part raised to block decapitating blows.
Look at the actual curve, it follows a real human's shoulder. The Nu-footmen model would have that curve going through his head.

even on release it had some cool stuff. If you swam in a very specific way you could avoid dying from fatigue and reach test areas. If you would go all the way south of tanaris you would meet some test NPCs. If you jump through the deadmines instance gate at just the right angle you could end up in the beta version of the outlands.

it's ogre... even a high-ranking dev corroborates 10+-year-old claims that Blizzard had sold its soul.

If you merge you always get a fight between the two companies. If are weak like blizzard was its no wonder activision jumped on blizzard and ate them.

I recall some saying that it's because Metzen became older, and wanted something nice and hopeful.

Maybe, but SC was not the universe to tell that story in.

Did WoW really have millions of players once?
I never played on official servers, but I did see those marketing lines disks once, it was what, 12 or so millions? If true, that must've been cool.

blizzard is a publicly traded company so I assume they cant lie about stuff like that. They also claimed those millions during investor meetings. They could massage the numbers a bit since chinese netcafees could buy time by the hour, but even then millions is a realistic number. WOW was absolutely massive. Reports on old blizzard confirm it. People had massive bonuses (they had a royalty sharing program) and a ton of raises and new hires. Expansion sale records dont lie either.

To be fair, strategy games as a genre have problems which prevent more widespread game popularity compared to earlier age.
It's a higher pressure genre in general, some thinking is needed.
The more complex it is or the higher the pressures are, the less players there are, up to the military simulators and mobas.
The age of comfortable, pleasant, soulful gaming fun is either passing by or long gone.
Something is missing, population changes, the original conditions of computer world denizens at large, by itself and the internet are no longer the same, and the overall noosphere is being corrupted by agendas.
There was more than a plenty garbage back then, but things still were generally innocent at least on the surface.

I can believe this one. Making korhal the capital is a great media stunt. And Tarsonis is fricked because of the zerg. And if something is the capital of an empire it naturally becomes wealthy. 3-4 years might be a bit optimistic, but parts of it definitely are developed.

You say that, but if there was the Overmind at Blizzard HQ, controlling all the suits and sending people with ideas of questionable nature to fulfill their final duty as citizens, go into the tanks and become one with the swarm, perhaps things would be better for the story.
Albeit only a little bit, past some point it would be too many people to eat. And people have prions and stuff, bleh.

I remember before LotV released they said that they had to kill of Zeratul because his story was already over, and Artanis needed to be the face of the campaign since he didn't have that honor before. It was supposed to be a "passing of the torch" from an aged veteran to a new ruler for a bright future.

Then the game came out and it was Zeratul dying so that some roided out moron that shared the same name as Artanis could fumble his way through the Korprulu sector as he was chased by an entirely invisible and non-threatening force of mind-controlled Protoss that he couldn't lead at all, all while his crew just squabbles about frick-all in a tween-style Disney drama so he could end up making a hollow speech about heroism or something to extremely accomplished Protoss and robots who have been in Stasis for several thousand years.

You even see it in how the characters act, Tassadar, Fenix, and Aldaris are boisterous and open in their opinions, they hold nothing back and stand by their ideals.
The Dark Templar are less so and thus it was through them that Kerrigan managed to manipulate the Protoss while it was seen through immediately by Aldaris.

Like the milion cardgames years after hearthstone that either flopped on release or have almost no players, or the million mobas after league and dota or the billion battle royales of franchises that have nothign to do with battle royales. I don't get it, clash of clans or whatever this is based on is already like years old and is not a hype new thing, why bother with this crap insead of focusing on your big titles that you're running into the ground or abandoning? Blizzard should've gone brankrupt years ago but no Activision saved them and then Microsoft saved Activision-Blizzard. Sadly I don't see microsoft going bankrupt anytime soon.

Because AAA Studios insist on AAA productions which becomes an all or nothing deal, so they have to be sure that the venture has mass-market appeal which ironically means they're too late to the party by the time they get their game out.

What they should do, is downsize their AAA studio into multiple AA teams with various experimental games. This would let them easily beat out Indies while not being as costly if the project fails. If they strike gold, then they can go all in on a sequel in AAA quality.

Good luck convincing a suit of that though.

Public as in IPO and that sort of thing?
I've been wondering, is it possible for a corporation or a company, any field really, to remain in control of itself?
From what I've seen with a surface glance at business, I've got an impression that one always has to fight not to get bought over unless one's huge.

          Anonymous

For publically traded companies, if you own 51% of the company's shares, you have 100% control of that company. However, the meta is that companies often only keep 30% of the shares, because they will usually be enough to remain the largest shareholder (and therefore remain in control). The obvious downside to this is that someone richer than you can just buy up 51% of the shares and eat you.
For privately owned companies, there is often splitting of the shares (i.e. if there are co-owners), which can also lead to a hostile takeover if someone sells out to a competitor. However, if the owners are unwilling to sell, then those companies are safe from acquisition.
          At least to my understanding.

          Anonymous

as in IPO and that sort of thing?
IPO is just initial public offering. It is the final step of going public and allowing people to buy shares in your company. You can also remain private and sell shares (for example facebook gave the guy who did art on their office shares as payment, those were hard to sell until facebook went public and he could trade those shares).
You can remain in control but still sell shares. Just keep the majority of the shares in your hands. But shares are a great way to raise a bunch of money. So putting 51% of your shares on the market to raise money is tempting. As long as one person doesnt get all of them youre still safe (if you hold 49% its hard to get taken over. The person that wants to take you over has to convince everyone that holds your stock to sell their shares to him. And have to disclose if you have a major stake in a company).
I have no idea what blizzard did. But I can totally imagine they have a bunch of stock floating around, raising money to make games is hard. The merger and then aggressive stock purchases would allow activision to buy up blizzard

Still, I agree, I think more factions would be better than just 2. But I still think a faction-less game focusing more on minor factions and reputation would potentially be better.

Paladins were a last minute rework. they had some stuff like crusader strike in the beta.

Minor factions can work, but they by design would have to deal with big factions at some point at least. Gotta move the plot.

Well I guess I should say faction restrictions. I believe in the alpha there was a lot less restrictions on who you could quest with, quests you could do etc. But faction rep was still a thing. So humans and orcs couldn't just party up right away. Wish I had screenshots of the articles, cause I'm not 100% sure of the mechanics.

Graphics had to look better and better, and hardware didnt scale fast enough to keep up. So small sightlines and loads are the only solution. Its why legend of zelda can have the hyrule fields, while modern games would piss and shit themselves.

its pretty shocking how a few slight changes can make something so much more attractive. I never really respected artists their craft back then. The ability to effortlessly make something this appealing is amazing. You dont know its a master's craft until you see talentless hacks take over

        Anonymous

        >but it seems like Blizz somehow thought that huge shoulder pads were what people wanted
I see your point, but I must say that great stories aren't made by customer pandering usually, and Warcraft and its more original concepts are no different.
        Huge pauldrons are irreplaceable.

        >WC3's engine was capable of doing some crazy shit.
We're talking graphics. It's clear they barely touched any of the shaders (if that's even a thing in the engine, for all I know it could just be stock shaders like they used back in the day), and it just makes everything look garbage. The frame locked animations are especially egregious, and I can't believe they didn't even address that.
