I bought a PS5...

...just for FFXVI, played the game around 15h and was bored as hell. Now I'm playing Elden Ring again.
Am I the only one who can't enjoy story heavy games anymore? The endless cutscenes of the new FF games were so boring and hollow. And don't get me wrong. I love to read. Currently reading some comfy Robert E. Howard books but modern story heavy games are so annoying and horrible written.

already played Nioh 2. And as I say. I don't have issues with story heavy games. I love Planescape Torment. But modern story games are so exhausting with endless yada yada

16 isn't horribly written. It can be dull, it can feel a little bloodless, but it isn't horribly written. And I'm reading Howard, too.

XVI is dull and bland. OP is right. The fighting is somewhat okay but the story, pacing and writing is horrible.

I also bought a PS5 just for FFXVI and while the ARPG aspects of it are amazing and it's overall a pretty decent story, I feel like they have forsaken too many of the classic rpg mechanics of the FF series for me to really get into it. It doesn't really feel like final fantasy anymore.

Nah, story games are always just bare bones corridors of boring shit and as you say are just poorly written. Vidya that doesn't focus on story, goes without saying, are focused on gameplay and are thus more fun.
I also find the people who want story games are usually young adults trying to look mature and non-vidya fans who only got into gaming because it's mainstream now

It's the other way around. Fungays are a blight on this medium. As you get older, you age out dopamine levers/skinner boxes and appreciate the artistry and craft that goes into constructing these worlds more.

totally opposite for me. I love to play games like FF in my youth but now in my adulthood I just play pure gameplay games. Things like Dark Souls, roguelikes, online fps, rts games, etc.

You can't enjoy that type of storytelling. Elden Ring is story heavy. It just doesn't force anyone into it. As you get older, you start to realize answers to questions rarely come without work. Sometimes never at all. Games like FF are for smooth brains that need every box checked.

Funny that you mention tv since I feel like the story would've been better served if it was something more long form like a tv show, or even an mmo like xiv. they just had too much ground to cover for one game.

The story is just mediocre at best.
There's nothing really special about it, it doesn't commit to anything.
It tries to be political but politics have no implications on Clive's actions. It tries to be about a revolution, about how the crystals are killing the world, and about some alien guy manipulating everyone from the shadows... none of that is really elaborated upon, it's shallow. The game tries to be mature but doesn't commit either, no nudity or proper gore.

Cid's relationship with Benedicta was barely touched upon, there was one second long flashback and that's it. We are supposed to think that those characters are important for each other but the game doesn't spend enough time or plotpoints with them for that.
Also, Cid's death was anticlimatic and too soon.

Jill is cute and all but she lacks context. I forgot were she was from and why she was in Rosaria with the royal family to begin with.

I think the story's wrost sin is failing to give a proper reason as to why the branded are hated. A whole class of people are not hated without a good reason. What exactly have the branded done?
Their treatment would be more plausible if, for example, in the past a famous branded had caused a tragedy of enourmous proportions, or if the branded had caused the blight.

No reason is given though, besides the fact that they were born with a tattoo.

Also, the old cliches about the religion being false and the church evil, the Emperor being some autistic moron and all Kings (besides the protagonist's father, who shares his plot armor) being evil.

I think that even XIII's and XV's story and world was more interesting in terms of concept and theme, although certainly badly executed.
XVI on the other hand has a mediocre story and theme, but more well executed which makes it more enjoyable. It also helps that the protagonist is cooler and it has a proper romance.

That said, this isn't the game that will save Final Fantasy

      >this isn't the game that will save Final Fantasy
No game will save FF bro, it's fricking dead. You think all of a sudden FF was going to go back to being a trend setter like it was in the late 90s, early 00s? There is a generation of people whose experience with mainline FF is the fricking lightning trilogy and XV. The brand is just damaged.

games should focus on gameplay and not some terrible story.

      Anonymous

Not even that necessarily, but turns out video games just aren't a very good medium to tell a long-winded story, because they're supposed to be an interactive medium, and what often times ends up happening is that the heavy story focus gets in the way of the gameplay and interactivity, and vice versa.

I strongly believe that movies and video games go hand in hand but there is a huge problem when you have 12 hours of cutscenes and the gameplay is a shitty button masher with corridors. It's weak.

The problem with the story in the modern AAA games is twofold. First, the story needs to be accepted by a committee, with writers being afraid to take real risks. This limits their creative freedom, which when combined with the fact that the writers aren't necessarily good leads to very mediocre stories.
Second, they do not utilise the medium well. The cutscene-heavy approach to storytelling, which takes inspiration from film and tv series isn't necessarily the most suitable format for video games. Long cutscenes take you out of the experience, while video games should be all about immersion. Ironically, the seemingly lower effort CRPG-style simple text box (with choices) is a better fit for vidya than the heavy use of cutscenes.
