The vet techs that work for me make either 42k starting or all the way up to 128k (for my lead tech that's been with us for 18 years. Not a doctor. a tech). They're not going to make anything until they get enough experience to warrant it. >if it's cheap enough
That little qualifier runs contrary to his whole mindset. He thinks these price points are immovable and justified even during recession. But theaters still haven't recovered, and the price of multiple, let alone single movie tickets is probably a huge part of that.

          >and you can get some properly good voice acting without hiring some overpriced hollywood degenerate or a talentless hack like troy 'the cuck' baker
Again, you are thinking like someone who actually cares about video games. Troy Baker is a known name in the casual audience, and names sell.

Let me tell you something. If you have built your own PC, there is probably not a single game on the market aimed at you.

            Anonymous

no fricking casual cares about who the frick voiced the game lmao, it's mostly the inbetweeners who think they're hardcore but aren't quite so

              Anonymous

Not true. You probably know nothing about marketing. The only reason why people are even giving attention to Fort Solis is because he is in it even though the game looks like it has less gameplay than David Cage games.

                Anonymous

m8 when I think of casuals I think of a random friends who turn their PS5 on every couple of months to play whatever popular game they randomly snagged. no they don't know who troy baker is

people who are obsessed with voice actors aren't exactly casuals but 'core' gamers who think they're tasteful but really aren't, the same exact of tryharder who name drops composers but isn't qualified to judge something on an individual basis, or tries to seem like he knows more than anyone else by praising the 'performance' in typical movie games like Senua and Plague Tale. even console warriors usually go here, at the very least, sony fans are definitely obsessed with 'production values', but those idiots are still a small part of the total ps4/ps5 userbase

well, lets agree to disagree, but personally I'm convinced publishers are largely making a mistake trying to go with 'brand names' for voice acting, maybe buying ad space on times square and saying 'THIS GAME IS VOICED BY MOTHERFRICKER TOM CRUISE MOTHERFRICKER' will trick a few people, but games with significantly smaller marketing budgets than your typical AAA have sold dozens of millions of copies before without resorting to any of this shit, word of mouth and a good game go a long way

                Anonymous

                >when I think of casuals
A casual knows TLOU. A casual knows what CoD, FIFA, or Assassin's Creed, or GTA is. Even my friend who is a gigachad 6'5 doctor, who plays a video game once every 6 months knows all of these games. Troy Baker who voiced TLOU, ohhhhhhh that guy. What you are describing is the ultracasual that would buy Wii, a console that was aimed at exactly this type of people who don't play video games. That's why it was so successful and why that success cannot be repeated.
                >games with significantly smaller marketing budgets than your typical AAA have sold dozens of millions of copies before without resorting to any of this shit, word of mouth and a good game go a long way
It's because you care about video games. I primarily play indies like Blasphemous or emulate older games on my 1600€ PC, which is pretty funny to think about. We are not the target audience. But if you are an investor, you want them to put Megan Fox on ads and sell 10M copies the first day and then move on. Everything is about projected growth, profits, shares. Bobby Kottick doesn't give a frick about the word of mouth, if he can sell dumpster fire he will so he can buy another helicopter.

People that are investing $220M into production are barely human. They don't even operate on extracted profits, they operate on timescales. Oh this game sold really well? But it managed to do it in 1 year. That's not good, that's money loss actually because they could get that elsewhere faster.

A product is not worth what effort you've put into it. I can hammer a piece of metal for a whole 40h week and bill myself $40 per hour and claim that piece of shit is worth $1600. That's not how this works. The price of a good is dictated by the market. If people are willing to pay $60, that's what the product is worth. Multiple publishers have tried $70 or more expensive games and they have noticed their sales numbers end up lower than expected. Publishers are doing variable pricing now, with premium bundles, one week early access and other shit for more expensive prices. That way they can take the extra money from the suckers with higher willingness to pay, while still getting the sales volume for the $60 games.

overall game prices are too high.
yeah game development costs have gone up. however the audience that games can reach is now many times higher then in the 90s for example.
the potential earnings a game can achieve have outpaced the potential development costs.
the typical return of investment on a AAA game for example is about 900%. if a AAA game isnt an outright flop it will on average earn 9 times of what was invested in it.
the roi is in the quadruple digits in the mobile market.
when publishers say games need to be more expensive and cite increased costs to make them they conveniently leave out that they sell way more than they used to.
sure a game might not be a guaranteed success but thats not on the consumers.
that just means your game was shit.
      all they really man is:
      >damn we put this much money into this piece of shit that no one wants. better raise the prices so we earn more than just our return on investment.

If your games get more expensive, I'll just need to wait a bit longer for them to be reasonably priced (£5 or less.)

If you're on PC, there are hundreds of incredible games that regularly go to less than £5. For me, that means all these older titles have completely distorted any perception of value I've got of games. I've got 200 hours out of L4D2, which cost me £2. You think the latest £70 slog is gonna give me 35x the enjoyment as L4D2? Nah.

If you're a cheap bastard I'll write the list here, just ask.

Open world has a place, but slapping it on to every god damn game just to pad the runtime is very obvious and makes the world feel less alive ironically enough.

      I would not pay 60(now 70)$ for 10 hour long QTE+cutscenes slop

I think part of the problem here is that we have gotten into this position where Elden Ring costs the same as Sonic Superstars at release. They're not equivalent, but they release at the same price. I'd be okay with paying more for really massive games from time to time, but not every game needs to be massive, some things can just be simple 6-10 hour experiences that I play and drop.

Sorry geezer, but you dont decide the price of your video games. I do.
And if I dont think the price is fair, then I’ll just help myself for $0.00.

It shows the exact disconnect with corporations and people. He's technically correct that game prices haven't increased along with inflation, however neither has the median wage and cost of living has only gone up so it's not like games are a great bargain.

If anything its far cheaper make BIG games than before. Sure, costs did increase for small to midsized games but they still can be pumped at decent pace and make back some money.

No game need 100 gorillions in marketing or Idris Elba face scan.

i would be fine with an increase in price if the quality didn't dip with pozzed propaganda trash, there's a reason why all AAA studios can only rehash and make sequels that are most likely worse than it's predecessors.

its like that one gollum game. i bet they spent millions of dollars making that game. hes an interesting character in the series but no one actually wants him as a main character in a video game. that game apparently did very badly. its crazy how much money dev companies waste nowadays

Making gollum your protaganist is perhaps the most bizarre choice in gaming history. Like i really want to know what the hell went down in the boardroom that made them actually think this was a good idea, or who in the hell came up with it.

Japan does/did the same shit with anime. Anime is costly to produce so they make Blu-Rays in order to make their money back, but Blu-Rays in Japan are expensive so sales start to drop because nobody wants to drop hundreds of dollars on a disc with just a few episodes on it. So what do they do? They just made it *more* expensive.
