I want my BBEGs motive to be petty

My group is taking turns running one shot campaigns, and I'm next. While, I’m not new to the whole DM/GM, I am a somewhat, beginner, and I had this idea for my one-shot campaign that the BBEG’s motive, generally speaking, is rather petty in the grand scheme of things. How do I make it work, so that when they encounter the BBEG, they’re surprised by the motive? The campaign will be a murder mystery, set in a modern rural town of America somewhere in the Midwest and I’ll be using the storyteller system by white wolf.

You seem petty enough to be a BBEG ITT. No need to get snippy over not getting a joke about one of the men qualified to be a BBEG in real life starting down his path over something as petty as getting rejected from art school.

Oh damn, how did you pull that off? Convincing them to do that I mean. I'd love that in my groups, some advice would be appreciated.

I'll try to help you out. Women usually have more emotional reasons for doing crimes than men who are more practical. Things like: jealousy, feelings of inadequacy, unfairness, social slights can be strong motivators, even for murder.
Other than that, include good reasons for people wanting the victim dead, and when none of them turn out to be true, the petty reason will be all the more jarring in contrast.

NTA but my group has always been rotating between 4 or 5 GMs.
We run the game for 5 to 10 weeks, a few weeks before we think it will reach a story arc climax we just ask who has anything to run next.

Tell your players you need a few weeks to read and write some new ideas, ask for anyone to run a short low level campaign, if no one is willing, offer to be assistant GM, if they still refuse, make them choose between a few weeks of nogames or board/card games instead.

If they are total buttholes, your group may disband. otherwise you at least get a few weeks break. The bore of playing monopoly should give someone the courage to pop their cherry.
Be very supportive of any temp GM you get, and try to steer the group to make his job easier/dont allow any shittalking of the learner.

Maybe a little dark but if you ever watched any true crime there are a lot of instances where somebody ends up killing a bunch of people basically over sunken costs.

Like it can just be them doing poorly at school so they start telling little lies, which require bigger deceits to cover until eventually they murder their whole family. Once they start, they can't pull themselves out and can't stop.

There was a case of a man murdering four people at a motor shop because someone there made fun of his lack of knowledge in motorbikes.

Have it start like that. Wasted a day at the DMV then got snubbed by a rude receptionist or something. Has One Bad Day so goes back and kills them, then has to get someone who knows them too because they risk getting discovered and have it balloon out from there.

Have the female BBEG be a yandere for a man that ended up killing a bunch of people basically due to her mental psychosis. It would even be pettier if the female BBEG and her crush don't know each other due to her being shy and not having the courage to talk to him, making the death all the more tragic.

Not a manga, it's a porn doujin about some psycho woman who was too much of a coward to confess and instead decide to blackmail and rape her crush. Her entire motive is also petty in that she only did it because she was scared someone else would steal him away. Which is why I posted it in the first place, it would be a good enough motive for the murder mystery the OP is planning.

Rather than communicate her feelings, she engineers a situation (via blackmail) to force the target of affections to sleep with her. Depending on the particular legal context in which the event occurred, that could be considered rape (and if not, usually a very strong sexual assault case carrying an equal penalty to rape).

              Anonymous

Calling her a coward is the issue here. She was scared of confessing and, I can only assume, be rejected in turn. So, instead, she engineers a situation where she forces the target of her affection to sleep with her via blackmail. That’s not cowardly, evil, yes, but not cowardly.

                Anonymous

No, she's definitely a coward in that case. She afraid of rejection, so she manipulates the situation so that there's no actual possibility of that happening. She's so afraid she goes to great lengths to never ever have to ask the question.

Not him, but she is a coward, this anon [...] got it right. In fact, if you read the doujin, it gets even worse in that she mocks and belittles other girls who are also in love with her crush by lambasting their "childish" confessions.

But, I mean, again, calling her a coward is a bit too far. Her actions a are anything but cowardly. Really, if anything, she’s more unscrupulous than anything.

She's afraid that someone else might steal him away, as she keeps repeating that she'll turn her crush so that he wouldn't be satisfied with anyone else, or he wouldn't forget about her body, so that she didn't have to be manipulative towards him anymore. But her crush has zero affection for her- everything that happens up until now to him is purely due to involuntary physical stimulation and blackmail. It's why she's resorting in getting pregnant, it's all she has left.

Pandaemonium from Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road, which just finished airing, was also a good example of a villain with a non-motivation that ends up working because she plays it well. She was a human at one point, with presumably normal human motives, but her original personality has become fully corrupted and now she exists purely to embody the type of magic she uses, which is chaos and monster-summoning. She needs no motivation for causing chaos and destruction because she literally is the embodiment of chaos and evil.
After getting a portion of herself unsealed from her prison she's just fricking around for fun and decides to recreate a monster movie with herself as the monster. She doesn't even mind being defated as long as it's suitably cinematic, since it's all just a big game for her and none of it really matters (her real body is still sealed away so she doesn't really lose anything important when "killed").

Go full Falling down. Random guy has a really bad day after decades of being shat on by his neighbors, his government, and his family, so he starts going on a rampage throughout the rural parts of the midwest, with escalating amounts of violence. It starts with a assault/disturbing the peace, but escalates to battery with a deadly weapon, severe destruction of property (bridges/roads/railroads), armed robbery, then murder. Find a really simple thing that he set out to do too, like going to work or trying to make it to a date, and something really shitty goes wrong like the bridge buckles a bit and his car get stuck in the wood, but he gets out before it either collapses or it just fricking stays there, stuck in the timber. Killdozer was in the right. The town colluded to screw him over. The buildings he destroyed were owned by the mayor, sheriff and developer who'd screwed him over, not by-standers.

My BBEGs in my current campaign have what started as a pretty serious matter that effectively boiled down to a petty squabble but because they're so powerful it's spiraled out of control
    >BBEG 1 and 2 are both wizards, 1 is CG and 2 is LE but they work together anyway for their own benefit
    >while fricking around there's an accident that erases 1's sister from existence and 1 blames it on 2

Love is an amalgam of many sentiments, what these people have is a fixation, and obsession untempered by respect or consideration. They feel they are owed that person, they feel they deserve that person, they think that person is greater than life and when they are rejected they lash out at those who denied them what they deserved, including the same person. When people is not people but idols, love can turn into hatred when they prove not to be perfect.

You've probably already got it sorted by now, but I'm sharing my idea anyway:
The victim moved in relatively recently from the city. Most of the town found him distasteful because he's a city-slicker, he never really fit in. The victim enjoyed playing loud music from time to time to try to recreate the feeling of clubbing, which he kind of misses.
The murderer has misophonia and the bass from the victim's music was driving him up the wall. This is the murderer's reason for the murder.

It's a whole moronic thing, yeah.
Want an idea of how moronic it is? Tipping is so expected that restaurant workers like waiters "aren't paid" minimum wage. "Aren't paid" in quotes because, if tips aren't enough to make up the difference, the restaurant is required to pay it. It's basically an optional ~15% tax to every restaurant bill that ostensibly exists to reward good service and punish bad, but ends up being pure luck of the draw depending on whether a customer is a generous or tight-fisted.

So if the restaurant is required to pay minimum wage when tips aren't enough, why do the workers give af if they get tipped or not? They lose nothing

            Anonymous

Tipping can sometimes exceed their actual pay which makes waiting tables actually worth it. If you take out tipping most waiters would simply quit as the job wouldn't cover rent.

            Anonymous

Assume that server can clear 3 tables per hour, works an 8 hour shift, and the bill for each table averages $60. With a fifteen percent tip per table and $2 per hour base wage, how much will that server make in 8 hours?

I'll bite. Make it be based around the BBEG being so high power and overconfident that killing is something they don't even spare a thought about - so, say, a vampire that kills someone purely because they kept playing loud music into the night repeatedly. Basically make the point be petty because killing is just nothing to this person at this point.

One of the most well written BBEGs I made in a two year campaign was literally a commoner who just had such a bad day because his biscuit was stolen and it was his daily food ration. A few deals with the devil layer he's a 25th level Demon lord the party had to stop.

The best part was, communities he hand Conquered actually thrived under him, because as a peasant he rarely had food. He was evil, but his people were always well fed and had easy access to basic amenities.

They just worked like damn slaves, which they really didn't seem to mind since again, really good food and water very easily, whenever they wanted.

I had a minor villian become this. Originally a minor ranking vampire who abducts the players and secrets them away to the local underdark equivalent, where they would deal with the cabal.

Instead they kept asking about and searching for him after they succeeded, so I had him come back as a hyper-petty antagonist, orchestrating overly-convoluted schemes in attempts to either kill, maim, or inconvenience them, always working through proxies and from leagues away.

I think the one that really got the players was the hostage/bomb threat being a ploy to fill their bags of holding with kerosene and rocks.

        Anonymous

Well, he yet un-lives, hiding in a bunker proofed against scrying creating exceedingly elaborate plans while he waits for the party to re-surface from the extra-planar temple delve they're in.

Hilariously, thanks to odd rolls, and some weird magic, stuff has happened that the party attributes to the vampire in question, despite it being impossible for him to interact with that dimension.

oh man, i just remembered why he's so petty about it too. His name is Carmine Von Nictor, but when he first kidnapped the party by charming them, he never actually gave them his name, so when the first party member was trying to get the rest of the party to meet his 'good old friend' he supplied the name "benny".

And they just kept calling him that to his face, making him mighty petulant.

The last actual scheme he pulled off was setting a variety of DEEP pit traps along a major road, and letting some traders fall in. when the party tried to haul the trader's wagon out with their own, he blew the sides of the pits apart with powder kegs, causing the hole to widen and the party to slide in and burying the traders.
While the party focused on watching out for an ambush and saving the suffocating traders, Benny went invisible, loosed the camels pulling their wagon, and set a time-delay bomb in the wagon itself, which ended up burning about 60k gold worth of magical components, weed, and melting several bullion of silver into slag.

This did leave the party with a few ingots of magically enhanced silver as a side effect though.

If you ever read the Star Wars EU, just used the Sith as a basis for your BBEG motive. The Sith are incredibly petty and spiteful, to such a comical degree that it reaches to absurdism levels.

      >Sith
The Sith are largely written poorly by authors who don't know them well enough. Take for instance, George Lucas interpretation of them. They're anything but petty, spiteful, yes, but that comes with the territory, but petty no. Darth Bane, not to mention Darth Sidious motives were pretty grand, unlike other Sith, who were just kill the Jedi for shit and giggle. Even Vader's motive of trying to bring peace and prosperity to the galaxy is noble and something various people have tried to emulate.

        Anonymous

I thought Dart Sidious motive was to prepare the galaxy for the arrival of the Yuuzhan Vong since he foresaw it in a force vision?

          Anonymous

I can't tell if this is bait or not, but Sidious never gave two shits about the Yuuzhan Vong. If anything, he would have performed worse than the New Republic and Imperial remnant. Something that was even considered in-universe.

The three most prominent Sith in George Lucas's story, Darth Bane, Darth Sidious, and Darth Vader has motives that were understandable and Grand. With the Possible exception of Revan, every Sith Lord's motive has been petty or just kill the Jedi.

Traya had some pretty ambitious motives.

              Anonymous

Yeah, but Darth Traya's main motive was pretty petty, she was literally seething that she kicked out of the Jedi order and forced to take the blame about Revan. Her meeting with the surviving Jedi council pretty much encapsulates it.

                Anonymous

Yeah, but she rebuild the Jedi order and that lasted until order 66, so ai wouldn’t say her motives were petty.

                >she rebuild the Jedi order
She rebuilt the order in her image, after literally killing every other jedi except for the Jedi exile, and even then, we can't know for sure.

The killer targets people that didn't finish his wife's deserts as he thinks it's a slight against her.
If they only ate half, dead.
If they left one bite, dead.
If they left to many crumbs, dead.
He doesn't target people that politely decline because "There's no room left", but saying something like "Never was a fan of jello.", "We have ice-cream at home", or "Maybe next time" and he kills them too.

Not just "a villain character", and not just "the final challenge", it's not just "the one behind the plot"
It's everything at once, because if it's just one of the three, then the campaign isn't over.

If I'm being honest, go to reddit. I'm pretty sure they have various subreddits where people act and behave petty for minor shit they deal with in their lives and seek validation. Just find the most believable (fake) story and go from there. And if you don't want to use reddit, try searching up real life criminal's motive, some of them are incredibly petty.

money is a powerful motivator that is also fairly petty, especially if it's actually not all that much in the grand scheme, like say the savings of a blue collar middle class boomer. Or a payout from a life insurance policy on an old person.

      >money is a powerful motivator that is also fairly petty
Really depends on the person's situation, someone who grew up poor won't find the thought of hoarding money to be petty.
