"Emulation" (aka piracy) is extremely disrespectful to the artists and developers who worked on the game and are a violation of the license you agreed to when you bought a license to play the game.
It's 3rd worlder degeneracy, yes. Get a job and just play the games like its creators intended you to.

      >artists and developers
Generally don't receive royalties, they instead get paid a salary while working on the game. They might receive a one-off bonus if the game does well, sometimes this bonus is tied to a certain metacritic score instead of actual sales. Fallout: New Vegas is a good example of this.

What’s extremely disrespectful to the artists who worked on the game is playing their work at a far lower quality than what they created. The assets that ship with these games are greatly constrained by Nintendo’s trash hardware and only with emulation at higher resolutions can you experience the artists’ intended vision.

While you're technically 100% correct, you and I both know that emulation is almost always synonymous with piracy. I know people who do emulate games that they own legit copies for and just want to play the game with better performance, but those people are the extreme minority in the emu scene.
tl;dr it's intellectually dishonest to claim that pro emu people aren't promoting piracy even if they don't say it.

This logic is along the lines of banning cars because despite good reason to have cars on roads and despite safe driving being possible, many if not most drivers will break traffic laws and speed limits as and when they please.
Just because some people use a legitimate thing irresponsibly isn't a reason to bar honest users from accessing it.

Go ahead I suppose, though practically speaking I'm not sure any money you spend on that will end up with the devs you want to support.

Depends. Emulation helps sales of already popular IPs. But it can hurt indies.

I don't see how the hardware platform you're running the game on can hurt anyone. Worst case scenario it hurts your own experience if you cannot access official online infrastructure and such, provided you're interested in that in the first place and provided the game you're emulating still has such infrastructure available.

                >Now compare the sales for the NES and the SNES with the PS1 and the PS2
Why? Unlike the 3DS and PSP, piracy for the PS1 and PS2 during their prime required having to buy 3rd party software. PSP and 3DS can be softmodded without any 3rd party equipment.

                Anonymous

                >PSP and 3DS can be softmodded without any 3rd party equipment.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
At the prime of the PSP you needed the pandora's battery - a hardmodded battery pack to trigger the recovery mode for the PSP and flash CFW on it. While it was possible to keep the version at 1.50 to play homebrew it often was impossible to play pirated games.
For the 3DS, early on it needed either a third party cartridge or a buggy video game.
This is no different from the PS1 or the PS2, both requiring hardmods to the disk drive.

Nobody actually messed with Pandora's Battery. And not long after firmware 2.0 launched, hackers managed to run a Hello World script using the photo viewer. 2.0 was quickly solved, and there were downgraders that let people go to 1.5 via softmodding. Hell, Pandora's Battery isn't even 3rd party equipment. Anyone could make a Pandora's Battery by opening a PSP's battery and nudging some pins. There were even Youtube videos about this back in the day.
                >For the 3DS, early on it needed either a third party cartridge or a buggy video game.
Exactly, a video game that is easily attainable by walking into Gamestop. Shortly after the release of the Ninjhax, there was a means of getting homebrew on 3DS without a cart and through the use of the 3DS music player.
                >This is no different from the PS1 or the PS2, both requiring hardmods to the disk drive.
The difference is a cheap video game, fiddling with a battery, or waiting an extra month versus only having the option of buying overpriced 3rd party shit.

Not that anon, but did you ever consider that some people actively try to compensate companies for their work, but just don't care for the idiotic rules and restrictions? For example, if you wanted to play Chrono Trigger recently, the only legal option was to buy it on steam, aka a horrific and poorly done port. You still bought it anyway because it was on sale, and you wanted the legal right to say that you purchased it. With that said and done, does that not entitle you to enjoy the far superior SNES version with romhacks and mods?

                >WELL AKSHUALLY NO BECAUSE THE LAW SAYS
Don't give a rat's ass about the law. Morally, you gave them money, you should be able to enjoy their product in any way you want. If they don't like it, they can shut their greedy corporate gabber. Honestly, they shouldn't get money period for that shoddy port job, but what other option do you have? you could just pirate it without caring about it, but if you liked the game then you'd want to give them money.

See how it's a very tricky little web of trying to be a reasonable customer, only for the corporates to spit in your face regardless?

That's how I view it. I wanted to play Wild Arms 3 and Rogue Galaxy, so regrettably I gave sony some money for their playstation premium service. I don't like subscription services, but they ARE keeping the games available, so it's no hassle to pay them for access to these titles, but the whole rental schema is dumb.

having just watched it, it makes sense because nintendo abuses dmca requests to remove videos that show gameplay. combined with the huge "frick you" to nintendo at the end, it's pretty based if it allows the video to stay up.

It's not abusing if it works. In any event, I don't care if you pirate, but if they really wanted to say "frick you" then they should go all in and do it for every console. Otherwise this is a useless gesture

Emulation is a great thing, there's tons of games that you'd have no feasible way to play without it. It's more of a gray area when you're talking about modern game systems that are still being sold since you can clearly still easily legally obtain the system and it's games, but I've always been a dirty pirate anyway so it's not like you'll see me pearl clutching about it. Regardless, switch emulation isn't perfect and clearly isn't impacting switch sales if you've ever wandered into a sales thread, switch emulation is a very niche thing that isn't hurting anyone's bottom line.

Nah, Nintendo clearly has no intention of selling titles for the PC market so emulating their consoles on PC has no impact on their sales and does not effect the intended use of their IP, as such, both emulation and piracy enabled through emulation are classifiable as fair use, completely ethical and should be encouraged.
