it's necessary for the survival of any community. The second you let women in it becomes about them and their feelings, even if said feelings are completely contrary to what the group is supposed to be about.

Gatekeeping doesn't exist anymore. It's impossible to gate keep anything, aside from probably fighting games. It's why they make Ganker seethe.

      >aside from probably fighting games
      >devs keep making shittier and shittier fighting games to appeal to the lowest common denominator instead of the people who play the genre
      >streamboars are the majority, even at IRL events people would rather watch their favorite player/e-celeb commentator than actually play a fighting game
      >troons everywhere
      >banter and shit talk are discouraged for "stream friendly language" so the dipshit running a 12 viewer stream can try for a partnership
the time to play fighting games was 10+ years ago, the larger community and developers making the games have fully capitulated to people who barely care about fighting games and everything fricking sucks now.

you guys keep using these little cartoons for things that don't happen trying to gaslight people into thinking it's some widespread phenomena
    >look at the little stick people! and now this guy joined! uh oh, he's inviting his girlfriend! now our group dynamic of 5 people has changed! this is what happens every time to everything that everyone can always relate to!
no. this basically only applies to ethnostates or something. but you're talking about some video game people probably don't have as much interest in than you think they do

Considering Israel exists, surely it has less to do with video games and more of the fact that literally no one takes ethnostate seriously.

Gatekeeping is only possible if whoever is in control doesn't chase money. I don't know if it's necessarily gatekeeping but Helldivers 2 dev(s?) seems really autistic to his vision to the point where he lashes out at discord trannies, but if he makes the game easier it's not gatekeeping.

You can't gatekeep games because they are product and it would financial suicide to gatekeep costumers.
You can, however, gatekeep communities to deter morons from flooding in and censoring criticism.

you can only gatekeep a community if you have control of who's in it
how else would you do it, call anyone with a shit opinion a moron? worked fricking great for this shithole

  11. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

Yes, it's very important for gaming or hobby communities of any kind. But very difficult to achieve when the developers themselves just try to bring in more and more strangers. If you want actual effective gatekeeping you create your own game studio and design a title that will filter everyone you deem to be undesirable.

  12. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

    To a degree
Shutting everyone new out no matter what will kill a community with time, but setting certain expectations and conditions before someone becomes a part of it can maintain its integrity.
Someone who can only microwave ramen can't call themselves a chef; someone who's only changed oil can't call themselves a motor enthusiast; someone who's only ever used AI to make pictures can't call themselves an artist; someone who's never watched a show but only heard people talk about it can't call themselves a fan.

There's a certain degree of experience required to be a part of any community, which may seem arbitrary from the outside looking in, but those inside of it will just "know" in ways those outside of it never will. This makes it uncomfortable and awkward when a wannabe insists they're a part of a community they are in no way qualified to be a part of: some will take pity and try to mentor them, others will want them gone, causing division and ultimately the destruction of the community at large.

The only successful gatekeeping is gatekeeping done by the people who make the thing that is being gatekept.
If the people who make it don't want undesirables. That it will most likely not have undesirable.

If you constantly let people know they are not welcome, they leave. It's a human trait. We aren't capable of mentally leaving the market square. All you need to do is say "ew, why is he here? Does he not understand?" and people will leave on their own. Gatekeeping is oddly a really wrong word for it since it plants bad ideas about how it works. It's more like ostracizing.
This is also why they keep doing their "gamers are dead" type chants, because they're trying to do it to you.

    Eh...
    Depends.
Some games need a larger community.
The issue is when homosexual streamers and youtubers get their hands on them which immediately after gets kotaku and other shitholes involved who promise the game developers exposure if the developers agree to sell their soul to Baphomet.

So you want it to have enough exposure that at worst you get some dedicated youtube channels involved but not enough your game makes the front page of IGN. It is a very delicate balance.

trannies have managed to weasle their way into every community and worked their way into the ear of any person holding any sort of power. Normies want their communities to be "inclusive" so they sign off on banning anyone that makes the troons mad. Same with companies, bad publicity like being x-phobic or tolerant of any sort of "hate" is terrible for them and they would avoid it all cost and rather agree with the troons and their lunacy and ban/exclude anyone that disagrees with them.
