No one on here is part of the problem. I volunteer with middle school kids, and parents in their upper 30s to early 50s right now are the parents of the kids being mentioned. And of those, there are some that are video-game savvy and guide their kids towards real games that aren't just microtransaction-laden shells. But that's difficult and seems counter-intuitive to a lot of parents.

If they dropped the awards segment, I bet we wouldn't be getting nearly as many premieres, since most major devs already caught on that they could release promo materials and reveal showcases in their own streams, without having to share a stage.

It'd be fricking one thing if they were being show E3 stage show style, big cinematic trailers or demos, but half of the trailers shown aren't even presented like big fancy trailers, they're cut like straight up preroll ads.

The only company with enough groundswell to just drop a trailer on their own without any fanfare and actually get noticed is Rockstar. The vast majority of publishers don't get to do that, even other AAA publishers.
And Geoff setting up a "winter's game fest" would be an even smaller event. It'd be just him in a studio in front of a greenscreen with a small production staff, and maybe a warehouse setup with some booths for demos, and sitting setups for interviews for press people and devs.
You guys keep forgetting one big detail: The Game Awards is a MUCH smaller event than even the earliest E3s.
E3s had a ground floor, stands, thousands of people. Companies had to prepare demos, merchandise, stands, hire people to work on booths. And the staff had to organize that nightmare.
TGA is literally just a gala stage and a band, most of the work is done by a small team that talks to studios throughout the year to arrange their presence in the event. But still, they don't even begin physically preparing for the event until a couple of weeks before. The thing gets rehearsed like a few times the week before.
Companies were no longer willing to put up with the work and costs of going to E3, but going to TGA is literally just preparing a trailer and giving paid tickets to the big bosses. Hell yeah, they're the ones getting exposition, barely get any work and a free trip, of course they'd approve of it.
