Is playing dual blades or sword and shield or other fast weapons in Monster Hunter missing the point of the game? I hear it's all about big committal attacks, so playing a fast attacking weapon seems to go against it, but I could just be autistic

No, you trade off good long ranged attacks for the higher mobility and your strongest moves still have long recovery frames so it's easy to get caught out, they're also much worse than others at battling some specific monsters where player mobility is less of a concern than the reach of your attacks. In general most weapons in their newer iterations adhere pretty closely to each other and encourage you to learn your specific moveset, the moves of the enemy monsters and toy with your specific equipment loadout/managing your inventory. The closest thing to an exception is hammer, which takes very little skill to use and plays identically against every other monster since it gives you free knockdowns with little effort
No because now you have to learn something far more difficult.
Math.
Hunting is about about killing something, turning it into fancy clothes and killing more things. Gunners are the purest hunters because they understand that all that matters is killing fast so you can kill more.
MH should never have gunner weapons
this is the most portable game post i've seen on this board.
>gunner weapons are more busted than ever in gen 5
>lel portable moment
Absolutely mindbroken.
I feel like if you have faster attacking weapons you get greedy with how many combos/loops of said combos you can do, and you really have to show withdrawal or learn advanced cancels and stuff but maybe I’m just making that up and no such thing exists. But its certainly possible. Slowest weapon I use is SA, next probably CB, and fastest is LS. LS i find myself getting greedy, and also wanting to get fancy with combos. CB has a guard point i think and pretty sure SA has a dodge cancel somewhere. Anyway this game has more intricacies than it gets credit for.
At the end of the day, the game is always about positioning and timing
Be it with a fast hitting close range weapon, or a slow swinging long range weapon, if you're in the wrong place or attacking at the wrong time, you're fucked
Anything but longsword is okay to pick op. Unless you're French then you're also not allowed to use the insect glaive.
Dual blades in Monster Hunter is not what you'd really expect of that weapon type. You'd think its a weapon that dodges around and is constantly on the move but SnS actually fits that better. Dual Blades is more about stamina management and finding a good timing to use your super move that locks you in place for the entirety of the animation.
MH hasn't been about big committal attacks since GU.
World took another approach but combat is still a lot floatier.
I'm playing 3U and 4U
Wrong, commitment died when GS RIP’d in world
normal GL in World is overcommitment: the weapon
Not like it matters
>mantles
>health aug
>monsters flinch and trip from every hit
sure, but you've moved the goalpost entirely
We need to return to Tri.
No, it's very simple actually
>Melee weapons
Playing it right
>Ranged weapons
Playing it wrong
I mean, valor GS charged instantly and had valor's get out of jail free card.
I love valor GS. it's so dumb
nah even with tackle you still had to commit to stuff in world because ultimately it's a mainline game that at least tries to be more grounded, GU valor gs is fucking crazy
>you still had to commit to stuff in world because ultimately it's a mainline game that at least tries to be more grounded
The fuck does this even mean? You can cancel any charge any time you want you god damn moron
Not to mention how you can steer a charge practically 180 regardless.
Sns and ds have some of the biggest commits in the form of perfect rush and demon dance.
'fast' weapons just lock you into multi hit combos.
No, fast weapons deal small damage per hit and must compensate with higher aggression which they are good at in the first place.
That is why I love lance, I can just attack non stop and kill the monsters with one hundred pokes.
>love big unga damage in fighting games
>used to love great sword too
>for some reason now in love with sns
hmmm
Every weapon has commital attacks
Is there really any benefit playing 3U on cemu vs 3ds?
You fucking cunt you've been asking this question 5 times in the past 3 days just shut up already
FUUUUUUUUUARK
The only weapon that doesn't have to commit to something to deal damage is ranged weapons and Lance
Everything else has some higher form of animation commitment
Bug?
Dunno
>Is playing dual blades or sword and shield or other fast weapons in Monster Hunter missing the point of the game?
Sort of, you used to be appropriately punished for playing these weapons because they were deliberately much weaker than the slow high commital weapons like GS/Hammer/HBG so you were naturally pushed towards learning these weapons with the small and fast ones acting as crutches for beginners, but the balance in the newer games is shit and there's very little reason to bother anymore (or you just play ranged weapons which outdamage everything while also being completely safe and braindead)
i picked up rise as a newcomer to the series and am torn between hammer, lance, and gunlance
which should i be for solo (i dont have friends)
They are all fun
Just swap around when you're bored
Lance
Become a lance chad
>start the supposed masterpiece freedom unite
>sns has literally one entire combo, two if you count being super commited
>barely any moves
SnS is incredibly boring in that game
You're not supposed to be playing SnS, FU's weapons are GS, Hammer, LS and HBG
Pick one
Oh cool, what a fantastic game where half the weapons are pointless. FUfags are retarded.
>Oh cool, what a fantastic game where half the weapons are pointless
You mean like every MH game? Or every action game? Or every video game even?
Some things are always gonna be better than others, that doesn't make a game bad, how fun the good shit is is what matters
ahahaha fucking hell
Half the weapons in 4U are pointless and people can't stop sucking off that game. It's just kind of unavoidable. The sooner you stop worrying about things like weapon balance and learn to play to a game's strengths, the happier you'll be.
>Half the weapons in 4U are pointless
Not even remotely true, CB is busted but that doesn't invalidate the other weapons. If you want actual pointless weapons, look at any weapon that isn't lance while hunting underwater in 3U.
The fact that you mention CB specifically tells me you don't actually know anything about 4U.
GS is the king of 4U, followed by IG, and then HBG, CB and DB roughly tied, with some matchup dependence. But one of these weapons will always have the number 1 spot on every hunt. Meanwhile the other half of the weapon lineup trail far behind, with SnS and Bow still being playable but not as good as the top and high tiers.
Except I never mentioned damage or tiers, I said it was boring because you do the same sequence over and over.
>I said it was boring because you do the same sequence over and over
Every weapon uses the same moves over and over
You do that in most action games in fact unless you're playing DMC where you're just trying to look cool
I mean GS is literally a single move that you sometimes charge and is great fun, SnS in FU is just mind numbing
>GS
Only good in endgame apex hunts with complete builds. An awful CB will carry you solo from low rank to grank without ever fainting.
4U is piss easy until endgame, bringing up tiers before late G rank and GQs when that's where you'll spend most of your playtime is pointless
>but I quit playing after 50 hours and never did GQs
Then you're not good enough for tiers to even apply to you
cb is king of clearing story in a clownsuit because of how safe and damaging it is.
bugstick doesn't really take off until you have a miku suit at which point it becomes discotan.
if you farmed a gq gs you have terminal autism and I doff my hat to you sir.
Meanwhile every run in the top 10 speedruns in MHW is with a different weapon. Curious.
monster hunter speedruns are a joke and are just abort abort abort fifty times until you get an uninterrupted sequence of windows.
it's like if they gave you unlimited run ups on the pole vault.
Nice deflection.
Not in the top 10 they aren't.
>Not in the top 10 they aren't.
How about you post that mythical "top 10" then?
How about you look it up for yourself before you whine about something that isn't true?
>Meanwhile every run in the top 10 speedruns in MHW is with a different weapon.
Are we seriously gonna act like MHW speedruns weren't dominated by chink HBG mains and a few frostcraft SnS players?
>you mean like every MH game? Or every action game? Or every video game even?
theres no way you actually think like this
Name 1 game that doesn't have multiple weapons that just suck ass
Iceborne
IG and Hammer are pretty bad overall, IG is entirely carried by DT drills and Hammer by ledge setups
>the weapons are bad because you have to use them in a different way, then they're good
Big think.
They're bad because they're not consistent, the ways to make them strong don't work outside of a few select quests
It doesn't matter how good of a matchup IG has vs Alatreon, that doesn't make the weapon good overall
>hatchets defenders
Imagine having your weapon's entire identity mogged by a single switchglaive DLC skill
a single high commitment short range toss is not the same as having a massive assortment of long-range options, fantastic mobility, and multiple absurdly strong multihits and zoning tools
so obvious when people who played hatchets with just tosses reveal themselves
Weird, I don't see him use ledges or slides at all.
>no reply
>posts something completely unrelated to complain about next
Oh you know exactly what kind of thread this'll be.
to be fair Garuga's basically the one good matchup hammer will always have even at its worst, even in 4U where hammer was miserably shit it still did well vs Garuga
nioh and nioh 2
Hatchets, tonfa, axe and kusarigama are pretty shit in 2 (and everything is shit in that game compared to fists)
SHITTER DETECTED
hatchets are genuinely top tier and tonfas are incredible. axe has bad skill setups but performs well, no idea about kusarigama
>t. +9 depths player
>SnS is incredibly boring in that game
Ok
SnS is super fun in 3 and 4 though, but awful in FU
That's cool.
I'm sure each game has a weapon someone finds boring.
I like the bow in FU but wasn't a fan of it in World (just didn't click).
It happens.
i think its fine. but i also started this series at freedom 2 so i may be biased. its not like 3rd gens sns is that much different, you only get 2 new moves to your weapon since shield bashing is a meme outside of rise. 4U only added the backhop attack which iirc wasnt very good anyways. its always been a very simple weapon, it also feels like it attacks much faster in FU than 3U/4U but that could just be my imagination
>it also feels like it attacks much faster in FU than 3U/4U but that could just be my imagination
Main series titles have exaggerated hitstop so fast attacking weapons feel like you're swinging them underwater
Portable games usually have very little hitstop so fast weapons feel extremely quick and snappy
uuuuuuuh i'm pretty sure hitstop is normalized to the same formula in 3U/4U/GU/SB
only world has this wonky one where damage done affect the amount of hitstop
I recall that SB hitstop also depends on the damage. Orange numbers have longer hitstop than white ones.
what? by that logic tri is a mainline game and has massive hitstop but in reality the hitstop is the same as 3U? (almost none) also FU definitely has hitstop on anything that isnt a shitzone and 4U has even bigger hitstop
Faster-hitting weapons in MonHun are typically a 'death of a thousand cuts' sort of deal. You're still committing to each action you do, outside of things like Demon Dance they're simply put towards shorter animation locks instead. And depending on the game, sharpness may or may not be a bigger issue compared to the slower weapons, who would get more mileage out of the same amount.
I want next MH to be open world with swimming and palamutes and exploring for endemic life and I'm not sorry.
As long as it won't be a GaaS that requires a Capcom ID.
of course it will
they're shilling it in their new title exoprimal
All the RNG will be then a pain in the neck. Right now you can at least savescum the upcoming augments and then roll them on the part you want.
I agree with everything you have said except palamutes. I think they trivialize the travelling on a big open map also fuck fast travels while we're at it.
I want monster taming.
I want to raise a Rathian and Rathalos, then set them free, then get into a bind during a hunt years and years later (in game story time) and have them show up all grown up and save me.
I would then feed them Well-Done Steaks.
I should probably just make a monster raiser game at this point
Have you tried monster hunter stories?
I want the next MH to be open world with monster breeding and palamute breeding and endemic life breeding.
Uhhhh what kind of breeding are we talking about here?
>want to be a gunlance chad
>completely unwieldy and can't do shit
I will suffer through the learning curve but holy hell this thing is weird
what game? Rise Sunbreak GL is one of the most mobile unga bunga weapon in the game. Before Rise, yeah they take a while to learn.
4U
Why has every MH thread for the past 2 days or so have this "3DS or cemu" question? Is it an actual bot?
probably some kid looking for emulator tech support
How can anyone enjoy anything beyond GS is beyond me
Whenever I've introduced someone to the series and they've found the combat lacking it's usually because they're using fast weapons that can let them play more passively and reactionary and taking forever to clear hunts. Stepping up to something that takes a bit more commitment like hammer or charge blade often makes it easier for them to understand how you're supposed to get in and slap a monster's shit.
if its called monster hunter, why do I have to go around and gather materials from nodes now and again? can't they just automate all that shit now
LOL!
>mantle
>air chud
christ i don't know how anyone can even defend world
nobody is forcing you to play that way
Why are you ignoring the post that disproved your claim, only to then post a webm of a specific scenario that only works during that particular setup and phase?
Your point was "hammer is only good in certain fights", now you're posting something that only works in that particular hunt and only at that particular spot. Are you trying to sabotage your own argument?
Don't bother, he'll deflect to "muh clutch claw" next.
But the clutch claw hammer moves are fantastic.
You posted a bullshit controlled arena fight like it's representative of normal hammer gameplay. Normal hammer gameplay which is sliding across half the maps because the devs are retards and the other where strong damage comes from low commitement attacks (ledge jumps). So yeah, I fight dishonest with dishonest. Blow me gay.
So you're saying that hammer is bad because in normal gameplay it would be even better than in that video?
It is bad because it limits the effective moveset you can use for consistent damage. It's like saying hammer was fine in base rise because impact crater did 300MV worth of damage. Completely neutering the rest of the moveset.
Can you post a scenario where you fight a monster that is neither on flat ground nor next to slides nor next to ledges nor next to walls? What are you expecting exactly, being able to fly?
>those attacks are too good so the weapon is bad
>also it has good attacks in every scenario imaginable, which is bad
>hammer is bad
>proof: a video and a webm of completely different scenarios where hammer performs incredibly well
???
You literally fight Fatalis in an arena.
So what's he gonna do once the mantle runs out or the phase changes or he can't get the monster stuck in this loop again?
>want to use heavy moves more
>can't use it for 70% of the fight
risking a high commital move to get a hail mary flinch is stupid
The controls are equally shit on faster weapons, don't worry.
>Spare Shot
>Razor Sharp
>the two furious rajang quest in rise
Boy, this sure isn't fun.
charge blade is pretty cool
Wtf they're fighting on a slide but he's not sliding around everywhere, how can that be?!
>Shall Never Surrender
Kek. I honestly don't miss uneven ground. In Rise:SB sliding is pure cancer and sadly occurs arbitrary in some transitions and places.
CB hasn't been good since MH4U, the only game where it actually used guard points to play optimally
The shit boomers come up with to rationalize their game being the "real" one is comical
It's the MonHun cycle. World was available for everyone so it *has* to be bad. Rise was a timed exclusive so it *has* to be amazing. World is considered the casual babby game even though Rise is objectively easier in every single way, something which the fanboys admitted themselves before Sunbreak came out, saying that "it will fix everything", while turning around and saying that Iceborne "fixed nothing".
>its based when I'm clearly biased though
lol
Love how you always describe the polar opposite of what actually happens in these threads.
you got the Rise fanboys really upset with this one lol
idk what you are talking about, I started playing 4U from Worldborne and not being able to block>GP is ass. Also, not losing charge on your shield when you do SAED in Iceworld surely means that GP>SAED is better than in 4U?
Losing shield boost after SAED was good, not sure why they removed that.
because SAED is already a high committal move that removes a good chunk of your resources?
Yes.
>muh counters
4U CB was braindead as shit but honestly CB hasn't been in a good spot in any game it's appeared in, the weapon is just conceptually flawed
>conceptually flawed
What youtuber are you parroting now
My own opinion you fucking gay
Every weapon introduced since Tri has been utter dogshit
ahahahahaha no seriously no one is this fucking casual
SA is shit
IG is shit
CB is shit
Every weapon rework in World and Rise was shit
Deal with it
is it because you play SnS mode for 80% of the time, Axe Mode being too slow, or being able/unable to spam AED/SAED?
and that's why there's no point ever arguing with mhg discordchuds
it's just dishonest garbage spewing
>still 39 IDs
>too cowardly to properly reply TWICE in a row
Maybe you're the problem here, ever thought about that?
No one asked world babies
>gets thoroughly BTFO
>proceeds to cry
Every time.
>I hear it's all about big committal attacks
no it's about killing big monster
I make the "this is fun" face on World as well as FU.
I haven't played any other MH games.
what is that squiggly arrow supposed to mean? fucking retard
the fact this pic starts at FU tells me everything i need to know
>t. literally the first case but framing it in a different way to deflect
Absolutely pathetic lmao.
what to do after Fatalis
No, but playing rangeshitter weapons is.
>GS when hunting Solo
>Lance when hunting in a group
>on very rare occassions use a Hammer just because it's fun to smack up certain monsters with it
simple as
all I need
