They still exist as Deepsilver fishlabs but yeah, GoF3 was such an insulting slap in the face and you can tell it was done with nowhere near the passion as the second one and they generally don't seem to care, it's just a product of the marketing team, I can't believe I actually bought into it from the hype.
Though a lot of the developers made a new studio called Rockfish, the developers of Everspace 1 and 2, and you can definitely see the Galaxy on fire influences there.
Galaxy on Fire 2. Yes the HD version is worth it because the original looks like shit and the DLCs are worth it too if you liked the main game. Of course it's not on the level of actual desktop games but considering this is a 2010 mobile game it's insane how close this comes to a real PC game experience. In the early 2010s this was insane to have on your phone and it still holds up even though the limitations are a little more apparent by now

Dunno how hard it is to actually install them or if you can at all, but the Doom and Wolfenstein RPGs were top tier mobile gaming but because they were iOS exclusives of an age of software that Apple no longer supports, dunno.
For iOS, you would need an older device that is on an older firmware. Newer firmware/devices have their autistic 2016 rule built into their code to automatically delete apps that were part of the purge.

I wanted to make a mobile game when I was younger, just a simple helicopter flight sim that uses the phone gyrometer to move around. Basic vector graphics like Asteroids. Just fly around blowing up tanks and avoiding getting shot down by SAM.
I wanted to make it so you held your mobile in portrait mode, so you could play one-handed.

Pixel Dungeon is good but there isn't a ton of run variety
if you play the original pixel dungeon sure, but you should be playing shattered pixel dungeon anyways. and even then, there are a frick ton of forks of the original game, each adding some new unique shit. you could try out the various versions and get variety out of them that way.
there used to be a really dope Robocop game that played like a 3rd person view Time Crisis. It was dope.

homie Dead Cells has a mobile port, if you don't like that game then you're ultra-gay certified.
Kingdom Rush series are good tower defense games on mobile.
Same goes for Iron Marines from the same devs. It's best to pick them up on Play Pass, tho, because otherwise all the good heroes and other stuff is paywalled.
Phones, much like PCs, are general utility devices, so gaming isn't their primary function, and most mobile games are more like a coffee break distraction than a proper medium. I mean, computer gaming was and continues to be treated like crap, and phones have even less going for them, because there isn't anything they excel at compared to PCs, home consoles and portable consoles.
Their biggest asset is being portable - you probably have a phone near you at all times - so you can do some rudimentary gaming wherever you are.
Which makes it all the more exceptional when they actually do have some substance, because you're not used to from a mobile game.
Yeah, but at the end of the day, the few good games I have are enough for me so far, because I don't play all that often, mostly when away from my PC.
I think most players also stick to the same replayable stuff, which is why good games aren't exactly in high supply.
No that's true, it's quite niche to find people who both want a deeper investment than candy crush, but also aren't already sated by real desktop games. Well, me and my friends on the train to school in the early 2010s perfectly fit that target audience for games that were almost as deep as real PC games, but perhaps kids these days don't do or care about that anymore

The only things worth playing are things ported from elsewhere but these touch screens are shit for games in general and touch screens in general are not a replacement for tactile controls so there is no such thing as a good game on mobile even if it's something that is otherwise acceptable.
