There's also stuff like VTOL VR which is a great fighter sim that's slightly arcade-y. There is also VR support for a lot of hardcore sims like DCS World or racing games, but there's also a good amount of VR content for games that can also be played on a standard display. For instance

        https://store.steampowered.com/app/252870/PULSAR_Lost_Colony/

This has the best bits of Star Trek style Bridge Commander with the ability to go on the away team etc. Playable solo, but best with others at their duty stations each doing their jobs on the ship , Captain, Pilot, Engineering, Tactical/Weapons, and Science. Playing in VR is really quite fun, both away team in person and on the ship, but its great without VR too; its just more immersive by far with it. Also the game experience varies immensely depending on our particular faction of choice. There is
        >Essentially a Star Trek Federation
        >Wayland-Yutani hyper-corporation
        >Loose alliance of gentlemen pirates
        >Futurama's Planet Express if it did biscuit fabrication and sales in addition to delivery.
The last one totally changes some of the objectives so its almost a different game, kind of ambitious. In any case, remember having fun with it in and out of VR.

It's going to depend on what you want to play.
If you're a simgay that can get infinite hours of of sims, then VR is basically mandatory.
If you like occasionally playing video games like most of Ganker, then it's going to be a gimmick to you.
The more you like video games, the more you'll get out of VR.

  7. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

It's quite fun but I rarely feel like using it when I can just click to open a game in Steam and play on my screen. Displays still aren't that good unless you get one of those 8k ones for $1000. Not many actual full game experiences available for it, most are novelty/party games and tech demos. It's best used to play flat AAA games with third party VR mods.

That said I'd still say it's worth it. They're only a couple hundred bucks for a Quest or some other mid-range set which really isn't a lot of money for me at least, might be for some people, and you'll get a decent amount of fun out of it. But it isn't going to replace flat gaming for you. It just isn't all that comfortable to use and involves extra work when you just want to relax and play a game.

VR gaming is great but feels gimmicky, kinda like those arcade rooms who have cool immersive games with guns, car games steering wheels and real size bikes you ride, etc... at the end of the day no matter how pleasant it was nothing beats sitting on your couch/chair to play a normal game.

Nah. I'm fat af and even I would rather stand for 8 hours straight to play vr than sit and play some tiny ass flat shit becuase once you go vr, no matter how big your screen or TV playing flat feels like playing in a tiny window

        Anonymous

I dunno about you, but if I'm playing a VR game then it's because I can't play it anywhere else
of course superhot vr is better than the pc release, having two independent hands is part of the whole gimmick and you can't do that with a mouse
But when it comes to stuff like fallout 4 vr, it's a bit more tricky. I can't really compare them because it's a different experience, despite being the same game. I'm either in the mood for one or the other, but never both at the same time, if that makes sense

          Anonymous

Mods. Mods fix everything. Mods give us non shitty babified games in full vr. Native vr mostly sucks cause devs don't make it for vr gamers in fact they making their "games" for people who have never gamed before. And if you're one of the few you have their matchmaking will relentless punish you by sticking you with people who is their first time in the headset EVERY FUKING MATCH. Vr native games are almost impossible to play if you're not completely new to gaming

Breachers doesn't use matchmaking, no one who isn't third world plays gun raiders, and if you're not getting matched with shitty people in population one, you are exactly who I'm complaining about

Gun raiders is a bunch of American kids and plenty of them are beasts at the game, don’t know what you’re talking about mate.
Shitty people play every single game so their existence is not a unique feature to VR games like population one. I mog people every time I play fortnite and I play it on a whim a couple times a year.

Literally every pop 1 match I got 1000-3000 damage points, the other 2 guys, literally zeros. They coulda just fired randomly in my direction and did more damage.

Stop shilling gun raiders and buy an ad. No one wants that shit
Breachers uses a server browser (at least until they add ranked)

                Anonymous

Your experience in pop one is identical to mine in fortnite, apex, rocket league, etc. A lot of people are just shitty at games mate.
I’m not shilling gun raiders and I don’t play it anymore because even though American kids aren’t third worlders they’re still kids and the lobbies aren’t enjoyable, no matter how much I enjoy the game’s mechanics
And the main way people get into games of Breachers is quick play, not browsing servers. That’s like saying call of duty has no matchmaking because there are servers

I really like the fundamental gameplay of VR shooters. So if you like light gun games, tactical shooters, or paintball, there's clear value there.

I agree with the arcade thing but that's what I want, I like having the arcade-at-home experience. But sitting in front of a computer is what I do all day so standing up and moving around a bit for video games is refreshing to me.

I would agree with other anons that sims are one of the better aspects, but I think it adds a lot to other games too. Actually aiming and reloading weapons is really cool. VR also gives you a sense of scale you don't get with flat gaming. The skyrim port is shit, but it's pretty amazing walking around the world and actually seeing the scale of it. This also really enhances horror games.

You need to be extremely social for it to be worth investing in. Nearly all the fun right now comes from interacting with other people through VR. Unless you're one of those people that just like to play fetish gore games with it and if that's the case go for it, but also seek help.

Oh and if you have a big head you're fricked. Take a standard ball cap and if it doesn't drop under the top of the ear and you have to use the last few clasps on the back you might as well avoid VR since the headsets are essentially one size fit all.

Anon the PSVR1 is one of the worst attempts at VR ever created, and I say that as someone that played a lot of it and was dumb enough to buy PSVR2. If you can extract enjoyment out of that dogshit platform, you’re a based VR gamer. How are you liking the quest 2, playing anything fun on it?

It's good but it's not amazing
the biggest drawback is that there's little variety. Not just anybody with a phone can produce it, so the material tends to be "safe" and vanilla, very little amateur stuff
also it's not as plentiful as regular porn, you really gotta dig to find stuff, and dig even harder to find it for free. Two drawbacks

WAIFU PROJECTION OVER SEX DOLL NOW! Whoever does this first will make billions.

Not a sex doll, it should just be one of those torso onahole toys. That way you'd be doing all the humping and the AR would turn the torso into an animated waifu of your choice, who would then put her hands on you, look at you and such.

this is just augmented reality + having a phone glued to your face, I fail to see what's so innovative about it

WAIFU PROJECTION OVER SEX DOLL NOW! Whoever does this first will make billions.

  23. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

Right this second, it's... both, I'd say.
I mean, a lot of VR content is stuff you simply can't do outside of VR, like all the rhythm games actually making you move around and dodge shit, or playing legit arcade shooters in 20XX, or actually being able to judge distance in games where that would help. One thing I still want to try at some point is using AR to play a piano, it's such a cool idea.
...but then you get the gimmick shit like VR Youtube videos where your head is locked in one spot and the depth is simulated, or rhythm games where you're slapping four things like drums or arrows, or some porn game where they were so afraid of you getting nauseous that your head isn't locked into the character and you're basically just watching the sex go on and she doesn't even react to your touch anyway.
Disregard this entire paragraph if you're into social stuff. If you like socializing with people online, get it for VR Chat and you'll wake up a week later with a nasty headset imprint, wondering how you managed to stay in so long.

Biggest issue is that there's a pretty big lull in VR in general.
New headsets are what help drive the market, and there's only been two major releases recently, one being the Quest 3 and the other being that $3500 Apple piece of shit, with its shit FoV and the fact it has no games because Apple loves their walled gardens.
If Apple allowed third-party VR content, that would open the floodgates for rich Apple prostitutes into the VR market as a whole, which would turn a lot of devs' eyes into cartoon dollar signs and really kickstart VR development, but nope, Apple's gotta Apple.
Whenever the Index 2 comes out, that would probably help too, as the Index was the leader for a long time and was about half the reason VR exploded at all (the other being the Quest 2, obviously.)

Right now, VR is just kind of stuck. I agree with a lot of what wrote, but I'd argue there are more fundamental issues.

Imagine if someone released a headset that does everything current headsets do, but to perfection. Nigh-weightless form factor, zero detectable input delay, resolution higher than your eyes can see, infinite framerate, unlimited battery life, flawless hand and body tracking, and so on. It would be awesome, but at the same time, the limitations would be all the more glaring. There's nothing stopping you from pushing your IRL hand through a virtual wall. All locomotion beyond the space you have available in your room has to be done via teleportation, using a controller to push your character around, or an omnidirectional treadmill (which feels less like actually walking around and more like using a walking motion to simulate pushing forward on a thumbstick). The game world couldn't have slopes or stairs that you could feel. You can't feel the recoil of a gun unless you use a one-off device for simulating gun recoil, and even then, it's not quite accurate since those devices have weights that move back and forth as opposed to just shooting something out. Even with such a perfect headset, the amount of new experiences it could offer would be drastically limited.

I have a VR headset, and playing games with it is incredible. It allows for things you could never do with just a controller and a TV. However, until someone invents a holodeck or an actual brain-computer interface that allows you to plug your brain directly into the game, VR headsets will always fall far, far short of what people would truly want.

As someone who bought the first two Oculus alpha and beta headsets id say gimmick. I also know four other people who bought headsets and they would say the same thing. In order for VR to take off it will need a game or two with longevity and atm the only ones with longevity are VRchat which has a bad reputation now days and army games which requires either to much equipment and or to much real life movement. Once a game comes out like the anime VR games where we can just sit there in real life while being able to do everything in the game it will pop off, that or someone will need to make something new someone hasn't thought of in the meantime until that happens.

      It exists, it works great.
I played that Wario game for a while, the 3D effects work great.
Of course the VB only had like 8 total games that weren't complete garbage, but the good ones on there were actually pretty good.
No clue how accurate it is to the real thing, but it works fine for me and I'm surprised how decent the 3D effect is in the games that utilized it right.
I remember a game or two outright not booting, but I don't know if that was my fault for picking a bad ROM or if the emulator itself has issues.

Both really, depends on the platform and the games. There are some pretty great experiences in VR and then there are some that ONLY work in VR etc. There are also a lot of tech demo level games that are basically priced high simply because of VR, like anyone who has VR must have cash to throw around - its the "Apple approach" where the most popular archiver on OSX is a $50 proprietary shitfrick utility that does the same or less than the completely free (both as in beer and as in speech) 7zip or PeaZip.

The tech is evolving and this is good, but we're kind of at an awkward place. A LOT of it is proprietary garbage sadly, Windows only, a data mining operation strapped to your face, and /or is trying to push their little walled garden exclusivity. I'd advise NOT supporting most companies because of this. Valve once again is perhaps one of the only ones that seriously gives a shit about an open VR ecosystem for hardware and software alike, so they're worth supporting. The Index is an excellent headset still, but I have to admit its no longer the newest and highest end hardware in its relative field, but its still very capable, moddable and the like . If you can get one refub or otherwise discounted its a good first set, and the "index knuckles" controller have ben the standard for finger tracking for years, same with the Index Lighthouse 2.0 sensors; even HMDs from other companies end up selling or using Valve's controllers and sensors at times. Meta basically tried to facebook their way into the market with dropping cheaper hardware in the hopes of getting a locked in userbase, so despite Quest 3 and Quest Pro being newer hardware it sucks to support their shitty datamining operation, even if you just use it on PC (and no, without a lot of frickery you can't just 'turn it off' it has a phone SoC in the HMD itself ).

Now that Apple has pushed their $3500 abortion out, expect renewed VR interest. Lets hope that Valve's "Deckard" arrives soon

The tech itself as a gaming platform has huge promise but the VR-dedicated library is incredibly lackluster unless you're the kind of guy to spend forever playing some rhythm game or "playing" shit like VRchat. All the best content - bar very few exceptions - available in VR is just non-VR stuff ported over, often unofficially by modders and such. That should tell you a lot about the state of the VR games industry.

If you enjoy it you’ll have no problem finding replayable games, especially on a standalone device like the Quest 2 or 3 that doesn’t need any setup and you can just turn on and start playing. If you don’t enjoy the platform that’s fine but you’re just one insignificant opinion-holder so who really cares?

This is way too hyped up. You think people wouldn't already be doing this if it worked? The problem is you would notice if the details in your peripheral kept changing every time you moved your eyes. Even aliasing artifacts are noticeable if the resolution is too low, which is why games with dynamic foveated rendering only squeeze out an extra 30% fps. I can't imagine how annoying it would be with AI artifacts.

it's not done because VR games are made by amateurs and small studios and engines like unreal 5 don't support eye tracked foveated rendering and even when foveated rendering is done it's done in a dumb way instead of doing fancy AI shit

I genuinely don't understand how people enjoy VR porn, it's just as static as regular porn with 0 interactivity anyway
Even games like virt-a-mate are just glorified scene viewers where you can barely interact with the scene without breaking it, you don't even have a full VR body
The only VR game that has halfway decent sex is VRchat and that's because you have to e-hump actual people, but you need FBT for that in the first place so the cost of entry is 2-3x the actual headset itself
The best use I found for VR was unironically just watching movies

I have the original PSVR (not 1080, a dozen wires, etc.). They did an updated version (not the actual 'psvr2') with higher resolution and less wires, but at that point I wasn't gonna spend more money. Now, people have the Quest that I don't think has any wires. I kinda want one, but I just know it'll be like my psvr. I'll play it for like 6 months and then put it in the closet. I think the best thing possible would be a price cut. For the price of a quest, I can buy a console or Steam Deck which will provide more entertainment overall. Anything cheaper but high quality?

If you managed to play PSVR for 6 months you’re a chad and you’ll probably actually enjoy VR in the new era

Ok, so Quest 2 is still a good option? Are there any games/apps that won't work on 2 but will on 3? Also, this is all streamed content basically? No need to link it to a pc?

Quest 2 is still good for anything but XR based stuff (like figminxr will crash it) and maybe the next iterations of emulators (current is probably at the limits of quest 2 capabilities)

Quest 2 is fully standalone, you’ll buy games for it in its own little app store type deal, but can also be used for PCVR if you want. I don’t think quest 3 has been around long enough for it to have stuff that doesn’t work on 2. I’ve played ghosts of tabor on my 2 which just released last week and it runs fine

The Quest 2 is still a fine option. The only notable difference between the 2 and 3 is that there are cameras on the 3 for AR. The 3 obviously looks better though.
It's a standalone device that doesn't need to connect to anything but you'll have a better experience if you connect it to your PC. If you have a Wi-Fi 6 router, you'll have a wonderful time connecting to your PC wirelessly.

Because the thing is, if you like it (I immediately did) you will want to upgrade to pc and quest 3 immediately. You will fomo hard. But pc first. Definitely agree, once you dip your feet in you probably want to dive in fully. But your PC is going to be a bigger bottleneck than your headset so imo you’ll probably want to get that to max capability and then you can make a decision on the headset

In that case, I might as well just buy a quest 3 when I get some more money and save the $200. I do plan on building a new pc this summer, so maybe i'll grab a quest 3 after that.

It's mostly just kinda meh, but maybe part of that is that I got an old used headset for cheap that isn't great.
In practice the 360° 3D you're essentially getting with the goggles and the hand controls aren't worth the trade-offs VR makes along the way. The control scheme kind of forces games into the same couple archetypes and has no real flexibility to it, a lot of dedicated VR games are either really advanced light gun-esque rail shooters, make a point about how wacky and weightless VR feels as part of the joke or try to have sword fighting with equipment that cannot emulate the weight or resistance of a sword.
It's probably not a popular opinion but some of the higher effort VR games like HL Alyx also just further served to highlight the limitations. Even with Valve magic the best they managed was something that feels vaguely tech demo-y.

the cheapest I can find a quest 3 is 589€ and the grainy passthrough and lack of eye tracking make me want to wait for a better options because I'm a poorgay who will be using the same headset for at least 3 years if I buy one at that price range

Better options don't start under 1500

yeah I might as well get a quest 3 since a quest 4 is probably at least a year away, but just better passthrough and eye tracking would be huge upgrades

Quest 4 sounds like 2-3 years (5 before avp raised the bar on screen res) quest 3 lite is said won't have color passthrough but most importantly it won't have pancake lenses so no reason to wait on that. Thats maybe a year. It wouldn't surprise me if they try to reboot a new pro but again it would be in the 1500-2k+ range

            why's it so far away?

Sounds like they didn't want to release the quest 3 yet (quest 3 launch was actually kinda rough when it came to even first part accessories). And they stayed they're releasing hardware to fast and wanted this one to last longer

I’m actually shocked how many people are bringing up passthrough as a selling point. I’ve just never given a shit about AR or passthrough stuff, I’m more interested in virtual worlds I don’t care at all about projecting virtual shit into the real world. I guess this is the apple effect

the best use case for the apple headset is a portable gooncave and it's actually cheaper than buying real screens for a real gooncave
      what were they thinking

Even tho it's shit, I actually use it a lot. More for periphery when doing flat stuff. I like to wear it to the sitter now, some times I will put it on specifically to go take a shit (when I know imma be in there for 30 mins to an hour) the right controller is all you need (hand tracking works but can be finiky). Or to smoke real quick or drink coffee without having to take the headset off. Also when I go downstairs to eat ill just keep it on to keep watching whatever I'm watching

THIS fricking thread every day. VR shills need to give up already. It is not happening. You wasted your money. Stop coping about it on the internet.

Upgraded from Q1 to Q3 and the jump was really good. Makes me excited for what we will get in another 5 years.

Walking dead saints and sinners and Breachers probably my biggest replays. Endless dungeon potentially, much more likely if you have friends to game with. Haven’t played legendary tales or Asgard’s wrath yet but they look really promising for long playthroughs. Skyrim and Fallout 4 VR got more time out of me than they did flat. Elite dangerous also very comfy and fun while being unplayable flat (for me)
