I bought that switch Sonic collection for my autistic zoomer cousin. I watched him play it for a while and he seemed to enjoy it. He looked at me deadpan and asked, "so did this come out before Mario?" He was under the impression that Sonic was an ancient series that Mario came along and killed but evey few years you get a new game, like what they do with Pacman. I think he expected something that looked like 2nd or 3rd gen games.

Why are classicgays feeling so threatened if we call him Eggman? It's like they want to secure the fact there should be only one correct name, it's vital to them for some reason. I've never seen somebody arguing over princess Peach and insisting we should call her Princess Toadstool.

"Robotnik" is a Slovak word for "worker", by the way. Should we also establish Mobius as a post-apocalyptic Slovakia?

its millenials. their childhood is the only correct way to experience anything. same reason you have people like richmunk clinging on to archie. they cant accept that the version of their favorite games they grew up with were butchered, poorly made localizations designed to sell copies, without any real artistic integrity.
      >I've never seen somebody arguing over princess Peach and insisting we should call her Princess Toadstool.

If I had to guess, combination of nostalgia and feeling that "Eggman" isn't a particularly threatening name. While saying that the doctor was never threatening wouldn't be accurate, the english side played him up as more of a straightforward evil villain with his childish aspect so that image stuck for those people.

hi, classicgay here. i also remember when Peach was called Toadstool and Bowser was called Koopa.

Robotnik got his namechange just because Sega of America didn't want people to immediately think of the Beatles.
honestly, i've come to accept Eggman, though i think the Adventure games still handled it the best. his name is Robotnik, Eggman is a nickname he doesn't entirely reject, hence still giving everything he makes an "Egg-" prefix.

Is it artificial winter made by Robotnik, with each snowflake being made out of nanobots?
Or Robotniks fall from the sky and cover the land?
Or maybe it's like spending time with Robotnik for entire season of the year so it associates entirely with him, like a historical time period.

          Anonymous

They've unified both versions in Adventure.

In Frontiers, you can listen to one of Eggman's audio logs and he says that "Eggman" is a nickname Sonic gave him, but he adopted it to intimidate his enemies. I don't think the name "Ivo" ever was mentioned in the games, though.

          Anonymous

Real-world explanation; in-universe, the final word is it's Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.
What's contested is the point he adopted the "Eggman" nickname. Lore is that Sonic used it as an insult and Robotnik liked it enough to make it his alias. WHEN that happened, no one's sure. It happened at least by Sonic 2, which makes the Sonic Adventure English dub where he insists on Robotnik weird. If Sonic 1 isn't the first time they met like the Japanese manual implies, it's probably whenever their earliest meeting was.
This means there's an alternate universe where he's known as the less family-friendly "Dr. Fatfrick".

Absolutely nobody ever calls him Miles, even in Japan.

      >An internal competition was held at STI, and while numerous designs were once again submitted to be considered for the role (including a rocket-powered turtle named Boomer), it was Yasushi Yamaguchi who would win out with his design. Yasushi had created a two-tailed orange fox whom he affectionately called "Miles Prower." His surname is a combination of the terms "per hour" and "power", the full name serving as a pun on the phrase "miles per hour," a clever homage to the Sonic the Hedgehog character and franchise, which pushed the speed aspects in advertising and the like. However, the Sonic 2 team wanted to go with a much simpler name, "Tails," which Yasushi was none too pleased with. Sneaking his original name onto the concept art, it was decided that a compromise would be reached, with Miles being the character's real name and Tails being the nickname.

He's an embodiment of industrialization. SatAM Robotnik especially hates nature, clean air and water and seeks to pollute everything (i think he actually drinks machine oil too?)

Game Robotnik also likes casinos and amusement parks. He had an entire room with slots and toy rides on Egg Carrier in Sonic Adventure. That's pretty much all he wants from life - to expand his area of influence (via building cities and factories) and have fun exclusively for himself (via theme parks). All of that resulted from lack of parental attention in his childhood. His grandfather was an icon for him, but he always loved Maria more.

    It's Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.
Eggman is his alias. His stage name. The one he wants branded on the planet so thick in its crust you can read it from Uranus. It's much flashier and bombastic than his real name, and Eggman was always about spectacle over logistics. He makes the most impractical robots, cities, theme parks, and death traps, simply because they're flashy and bombastic. He's a manchild that is less about why and more about why the frick not, so the silly sounding moniker that he has given himself/embraced (depending on your region) is more than fitting.

  29. 3 months ago

It was always Eggman in JP, though having that be his actual name feels off, even though it's so iconic, I think having Dr. Ivo Robotnik, which is a cool name, be his real name, and Eggman be the way Sonic call him, makes a lot of sense, it's not a bad compromise that they came up with afterall.
