the only thing I don't like is the main song being remixed and themed for like 80% of the soundtrack. not a fan of that motif

battle fixed most of the problems if you weren't a sega fanboy and bought a Dreamcast like a mouthbreather - SA2B was fun as hell

shit controllers with DOA thumbsticks, nogames (you can only dickride JSR and Shenmue so hard, and everyone knows you played Shenmue as an adult on an emulator), online gaming that barely worked because 99% of the country was still on dial up, absolutely bizarre controller and peripheral accessories, and abysmal marketing
it was a failed product with a lot of flaws, and the few gems that were on it found better homes on better hardware in their sequels and remakes

what did it fix? didn't it mostly add a bunch of audiovisual issues that you gotta fix with a fan patch in the PC version?

I also remember emulating the Dreamcast game & the giant Egyptian golem boss battle not bothering me at all, then getting the GC version and the platforming on his body to reach the weak spot on top of his head feeling really wonky

Gen 2 Pokemon is what genwunner manchildren moved on to when nostalgiagayging about gen 1 wasn't cool anymore. The Red battle and KANTOOOOOO don't make it good, just like following Pokemon is an insignificant feature that doesn't suddenly make HGSS good.

Banjos a good platformer, but platformers conceptually were embarrassingly behind the times even at that time. Sega had the good sense to go 3d but nintendo didnt evolve beyond the platformer for every single major game they released because of the cheap hardware of the 64 making every game a platformer.

    But enough about SA2

as a kid I thought SA2 was mediocre and loved Banjo; now it's the other way around. I tried both Banjo games again in recent years and just couldn't get into them. all the different styles of gameplay felt way too detached from one another and the overworld movement isn't satisfying. I barely remember my replay of the early parts of Tooie but for Kazooie I kinda lost interest when the most engaging part after hours was the crocodile carrot-eating (or whatever) minigame. I played through Spyro 2 semi-recently and it felt like how I remembered Banjo being: a charming platform adventure but with stronger core mechanics.

SA2 isn't exactly a focused game but going "ok there are 3 gameplay styles & all involve platforming & similar basic power-ups & mechanics" works better and I like how arcadey and mastery-based it is (something I didn't care at all about as a dumb kid when I just credit-spammed through emulated arcade games)

I don't like the way OP phrased it. I think a better way would be "Games that don't hold up but also do hold up because of nostalgia".

If you never played Chrono Trigger but you're a modern RPG fan, playing that game is a seamless transition. If you love 3D platformers but didn't grow up with Banjo-Kazooie, it's pretty rough around the edges. It's still playable, but it's not 100% timeless and will always play great for future generations the same way that like, Super Mario World is.

I think picrel is an example of that. Really rough gameplay if you didn't grow up with survival horror in the late 90's/early 2000's, but still very fondly remembered.

is banjo movement really bad or is it just bluetooth lag with a controller from an emulator?

      Anonymous

Banjo's camera craps all over the other platformers of its generation. The rest of the movement is only worse if you're not talon trotting and taking advantage of the other jumping moves. In other words, it's a skill issue.

Banjo-Kazooie isn't bad, it's just okay, and is CRUSHED by Super Mario 64. The witch lair design is really bad and being forced to collect so many items is also bad but both are better than DK64 which is bad in almost every way and has even more collectables.

Yes, as difficult as it is for dipshit zoomers to believe: There was a time when you actually had to play a game in order to finish it and no one cried about it not being "accessible"

I think what it is, is that Tooie letting you have all the abilities from Kazooie from the start makes it objectively a bog to replay Kazooie from the start.
That’s how I feel, Tooie’s options are just really good, even if Kazooie still has some better design choices, Cloud Cuckoo Land in general sucks dick

Mario Odyssey shits all over Banjo, it does the collectables without leaving levels the same way and transformations too but without all the shittiness from banjo.
