      Literally how?

I've always wondered since my language doesn't have them, what is the function of the upside down exclamation and question marks?

      Instead of
      >Are you a gay?
      We say
      >¿Are you a gay?
      Same with ¡!

So you know how to read the sentence from the start. You know it's a question or exclamation so you intonate appropriately.

        Anonymous

That's actually smart, it would make reading a sentence easier since you don't know until the end of it if it had an exclamation mark! Why doesn't english have this?

          Anonymous

          You got me.

          Anonymous

We generally use interrogative adverbs at the beginning of the sentence when it's a question, like you yourself asking, "Why doesn't English have this?"

Even when we don't use interrogatives, like when asking for confirmation of a fact, we usually place an auxiliary verb at the beginning. For example:

Have you read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry?

          Did you find my jacket?

      Anonymous

What I wonder is why aren't they more common

      Anonymous

In Spanish syntax, the declarative and interrogative/exclamative forms follow the same structure. Upside down marks are needed here because there’s no other way to distinguish a written statement or question that would otherwise be worded in the same exact way without them.

        Anonymous

The same thing happens often in English.

like everyone says, is to more explicitly show where questions and exclamations start

i rarely use it tough, even tough they have a clear purpose, its just more work

¿Does a sentence become a question when you finish it or when you start it? ¿What makes more sense?

        Anonymous

Well, in your case "does" already indicates that is gonna be a question, but the upside down ? works better as an opener

          Anonymous

True. Anglo language have the peculiarity that they change order of words for question so it's implied said sentence will be a question though i have seen this not being the case all the time. With the ¡ and ! is more apparent though since there is no change on gramathic to show said question will require it

          Anonymous

While that is accurate, there's a certain element of enunciation and the literal how of how you read things that changes when you are given the knowledge that a question is being asked. For example.
          >Metal gear.
          >¿Metal gear?

          >Oh, so that's where you've been hiding.
          >¿Oh, so that's where you've been hiding?

          >I sucked her dick.
          >¿You sucked "her" dick?
It's particularly useful when trying to piece together how sentences are intended to sound from the very start even with technically incorrect grammar. This is particularly useful for reading aloud.

      Anonymous

      >what is the function of the upside down exclamation and question marks

its so you know what the context of the sentence you are about to read is, before you get to the end of it

it might look stupid but it makes sense 100%

        Anonymous

why tho. just read the whole sentence homie.

      Anonymous

It just marks whether something is a question or not. It'd be redundant in English (and probably the other Germanic languages as well because you already know whether or not something is a question, right after the first word in the sentence e.g. "Does..." Do..." "What..." "If..." "Are..." etc.

Only the intonation of the final word in a sentence matters so having the question mark at the start doesn't make any difference. No one will accidentally read a question as if it ended in an exclamation mark because they wouldn't intone any emotion until they reach the last word, and interrogatives make it so you know for sure something is a question right at the start which defeats the purpose of the upside down question mark.

      Anonymous

      >and interrogatives make it so you know for sure something is a question right at the start which defeats the purpose of the upside down question mark.
The thing is, in Spanish interrogatives aren't rearranged like how they are in English.

Only if your language is fricking moronic to begin with.
