Did you play Carlo's game yet? How did you like it?
I think it's a great addition to the genre. Tried some new stuff, but didn't go out of its way to experiment at the cost of fun.

I liked it but it felt a bit rushed
I did a second playthrough instead of NG+ because the enemies felt too tanky there

Do you keep your build and stats for NG? Can I do a second character with different build then choose which character for NG?
Just beat Mad Donkey with Bastard build. Felt like a Elden Ring boss, he was so aggressive he felt tethered to my dodges and had that dance feel bosses have in Souls game when you mastered them

I love the Iron arm but Puppet string scales better for me, any reason to keep using iron arm?

You can respec your stats, P-organ and arm upgrades later. The ability to respec stays unlocked from the beginning of NG+ too.

Live Puppet Axe + Riot Baton, Strength build was a ton of fun.

I give it a solid 8/10, I think for a first attempt for a game of the genre it's impressive and lays the foundation to build upon. Looking forward ot whatever they do with the wizard of oz stuff.

beat it last night. pipe wrench and handle even nameless stood no chance once i learned the second phase a bit more.
gonna admit though, i summoned for 90% of the fights and steamrolled them with charge grug shit but its more satisfying now doing without them in ng+
learning the perfect guard timing is way more satisfying
also forgot to read the notes and pages for achievements and play the piano but it is what it is. its just gay points.

acid curved sword a little bit
        acid hammer on salamander handle

Advance is low key OP in this game, being able to use any weakness the enemy has by just swapping weapons + you get to use all the OP grindstones instead of the elemental ones that are mandatory during some fights. Plus advance makes you super resistant to all status effects.

I thought the guy who keeps making these threads had given up.
The game is Good with caveats. It's the most polished among the non-Fromsoft soulslikes and it gets a lot of things right in terms of balancing mechanics and gameplay ideas except its animations are all designed as Gotchas which don't work with the player.

    Complaints about balancing issues, Go:
    >Still too much healing by end game
    >Most mid-range (not-Great) Sword blades need to be faster as they're mediocre compared to the big weapons
    >The game tries to use weight as a balancing consideration and it doesn't work, because stacking Capacity to wear better, heavier equipment is always worth it
    >The way enemy attacks are animated is insulting frankly
    >Later enemies have large amounts of standing poise but are still fast as if they were designed to not have point, this doesn't play out very well leading to:
    >By the end of the game your average trash enemy is so incredibly awkward to fight cleanly and so incredibly easy to kill by mindlessly mashing/trading big stagger attacks into them that you don't feel like you're really playing the game any more and are instead just throwing your health and damage at things

this and my issue is stagger bar not being really shown for the enemy. i wind up a bit charge r2 on someones back and they still attack like nothing happened.
its frickin bizarre with the poise

        Anonymous

Yeah the numbers on stagger are very weird.

In Elden Ring a charge R2 from any weapon (that isn’t a dagger) will stance-break basically any humanoid trash mob. But in Lies of P a charge R2 from the biggest weapon in the game won’t even stagger a basic mob, and when you do fill the stagger gauge you need one extra charge R2 (or fable art, or shotput) to actually stagger them. In a direct comparison you are better at staggering stuff with a shitty dagger in Elden Ring than you are with a the unusably slow Live Puppet Axe in Lies of P.

There’s also the issue that enemies with flinch from any hit, or require their stagger bar to react, like sure only the smallest shittiest enemies should get stun locked by a tiny fast weapons. But the medium tier mobs should flinch on every hit if you are using the biggest heaviest weapons.

          Anonymous

yeah i went motive big wrench my first playthrough, stagger bar is just a detriment because gettin a charge r2 off on that thing takes light years, and shit doesn't seem to stagger faster than most other weapons. you have to rely on perfect guarding everything.

          Anonymous

Bigger trash enemies are given the high standing poise / long stagger animation treatment as if they are bosses in Elden Ring, but they have movesets which belong on the sort of enemies that should not be given standing poise and their health bars aren't high enough for them to survive the long stagger durations they get when they are interrupted.

Fromsoft's approach to this kind of enemy is to allow them to be staggered on every hit, but make the hitstun very short so you can only just manage to chain R1s into R1s and then give the enemy slow 'Breakout' attacks or movement so they can get themselves out of a stunlock by using a big hyperarmour move or dodge. This requires more work and more elaborate movesets than the trash you see in Lies.

No moron. Trash mobs are a serious threat at high level, if you try to repsond to their animations and parry them which is a stupid idea when what the game clearly wants you to do is mash your face into them and turn your brain off. If you were doing that already then I'm sure you experienced no issues.

Shitters always seem to love the idea of a game "rewarding aggression" when what they mean is they want to be able to smash the buttons and not have to interact with the gameplay. Lies enables this late game because it gives you too much health, too much healing and rewards staggers far too much. Getting even a mini-stagger on a big trash enemy allows you to follow up with a charged attack / legion attack / fable attack which triggers a knockdown which lets you get several free hits prior to the fatal, hit the fatal attack and then then also wind up another big hit or two as the enemy is standing. It's far too rewarding to just go in brainlessly.

              Who gives a frick?
Nobody wants to spend several minutes having to meticulously approach and dismantle every single trash mob in an ARPG
Throwing more variables into an encounter instead of just having spongy as frick mobs should always be the preferable design choice

Cool, that's not how even your favorite FROMshit game works at lategame though.

There aren't any variables if you're just chucking your big attacks at things wildly without responding to their moveset. If you don't have to respond to enemy attacks then there isn't even a difference between trash enemies and every fight will play out exactly the same.

That's why you add more to an encounter than just some fat homosexual with bloated HP pools. FROMsoft games are full of trash enemies you can just roll through individually once you know what they're about, where it gets interesting is how they're placed in the level and how they often come in packs with other mobs using complementary abilities, attack patterns, etc.
I don't see how this shit is any different, you can literally spec STR and use high poise armor and do the exact same shit in every other Soulslike. The only difference here is you don't get guaranteed superarmor.

                Anonymous

                >once you know what they're about
Which is the key point isn't it. You have to learn the fight. The easiest way to clear them in Lies is to not even try to learn the fight and just smash your buttons.

When a completely new enemy type bursts out of a wall in the final level, are you going to carefully watch and try to dodge/parry its attacks to figure out how long the openings are before you commit to any animations in an attempt to play safely and purposefully? Or are you going to do this. You know what the answer is.

I think I understand what you mean. By the time you reach the endgame there's no risk to the encounters because you can just cheese and bruteforce them, which can make you think that there is no point in interacting with the animations or bothering to learn patterns. I somewhat agree with this. At the beginning of the game when you only have 2 or 3 heals every elite enemy needed careful analysis and/or resource management before engaging especially because they were blocking your way in key areas. In endgame it's just charge R2, Run away, charge R2, run away, charge R2.

yeah considering by end game you can have up to 10 heals worth of pots, and you know a stargazer is just around the corner most of the time.

I finished ng+ the other day so now I'm done with game. If it gets a dlc I'll come back to play that though. Great game and was better than what I was expecting. I really liked puppet ripper and two dragons a lot. I finished ng+ manus with the ripper and nameless with dragons. The katana feel absolutely amazing when you get in the flow with its R2 deflect attack. My favorite arm was falcon eyes followed closely by the string. Boost glaive was my favorite normal weapon.

      question
after doing ng+ would you have rather started over fresh or was ng+ with already a weapon you like, better?

        Anonymous

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking but I beat the game once and then decided to carry that over into ng+ for the second run. That was preferable because I got to keep all my weapons and stuff so no I wouldn't want to make an entirely new save again. I got the "free from the strings" ending on the first run and did ng+ right after that because I wanted the "rise of P" ending, which I successfully did get. I could do one final third run to the get the bad ending but I'm too burnt out at this point, I've had my fill.

Pretty disappointed to be honest. As someone who primarily plays without using lock-on, the unlocked dodge roll is laughably pathetic. It’s basically unusable. So I’m forced into using lockon.
I also feel like the game could’ve benefitted from a more recognizable deflect sound/animation. In Sekiro, not only do you get a snappy, obvious animation (Wolf lowers his sword to a completely different angle), but you also get a metallic sound effect which essentially functions as a “here is your deflect window” audio indicator.
I think a lot of the complaints you see on reviews about the deflect being “too strict” actually just comes from the lack of audio/visual feedback from your blocks.
Also, playing the Souls games over the years has made me absolutely resent weapons that push enemies back farther than you go forward. You end up pushing enemies out of your own combos, which is brutally annoying. I’ve noticed this happens a LOT in lies of P.
And what were they thinking making every starter weapon a thrusting weapon?
I really want to like it but I feel like it tries to be a combination of bloodborne and sekiro and misses some of the smaller, more missable core things from both games that made them great in the first place and it just ends up feeling frustrating to play most of the time

      >the unlocked dodge roll is laughably pathetic
you're right and I have no idea why this is even a thing, it's perfectly possible to animate the step dodge while not locked on. At least Lies doesn't also require you to lock on to use a gun to parry.

      Anonymous

      >You end up pushing enemies out of your own combos
This is nice when it's used as a gameplay mechanic and the game allows you to compensate for it with alternative attacks that move forward or as a balancing factor in different weapon movesets. Makes you consider spacing. I suspect it's one particular weapon you were trying to use in this case, as this doesn't happen consistently in Lies the way it does in a game like DS2.

      >but you also get a metallic sound effect which essentially functions

And that's why I hated Sekiro, "PARRY HERE!" is not a good mechanic and makes parrying trivial.

Acid rapes humans specifically. When you first get the acid spear it seems meh but it's deceptively good, you're just fighting enemies that resist that damage type with it when you acquire it. Later on it's GOATed.

If you want to, sure. You can still set them on fire but acid will also break their weapons quicker. When they're inflicted with acid, they'll take more part destruction damage. Humans usually use weapons which is why it's good for them. I also think they have lower acid resistance in general.

So If I want to break Big Bunny Boy's giant weapon, I should hit him with the acid a few times before I start trying to perfect block?

Most people use this handle, because it's really good. So, maybe this isn't what you wanted (''give me best OP weapon''), but it's close to that. I used this handle on my fresh NG (4th run through the game).

When you get to Hotel, which is at the end of chapter 1, you will have the access to training ground where you can test moveset (and see damage) on puppets / targets.

If you go with STR character, raise Motivity and ignore Technique, at least on first playthrough. Second most important stat is Cpapacity, as it raises your defense, your weight % and legion (used for legion arms). Vigor at 20 is enough. Even if you start with STR character who has the lowest Vigor / stamina out of 3 possible builds, you won't have problems.

(this part might be confusing because my ESL ass can't explain properly)
When you unlock P-organ, you will have only Phase 1 unlocked. To unlock Phase 2 you need to learn 2 (out of 4) possible Phase 1 abilities. Do note that it works for other Phases as well. You need to learn ANY 2 abilities from any Phase. You don't need to learn Phase 2 skills to unlock Phase 3 etc. I say that because Phase 1 has way better abilities than, say, Phase 3.

Also how do guard parry weapons compare to the Katana? Because this is the most fun weapon in the game for me so far

      Anonymous

katana is pretty good, but somehow I always end up back at the rapier. I keep picking up all these weapons that do more damage on paper, but at the end of the day the speed and fencer's moveset is just too good to put down. The strong attacks in particular are the best they've ever been, that poke-and-retreat backstep you get with uncharged strong attacks doesn't just get you out of trouble in a hurry, it synergizes perfectly into a charged attack.

Lots of weapons have these great r1 into r2 into r1 combos, or little hidden traits like the tyrant knife's running attack/Backstep+r1 being this lightning quick lunge forward.

        Anonymous

I recenlty started to use Covenant Spear and the parry fable art on the handle has you perform a backstep which makes for a super good transition into a charged R2 cause it lunges. Very nice weapon, lots of thrusts and sweeps

They just need to build in a followup thrust to it if you successfully block an attack with it. The charged R2 and running R1 have it pop out but it really just adds a bit of safety to those attacks.

Etiquette is still good in Lies of P, it's gimmick is just entirely built around the fable art. Like the katana, it should have a distinct white flash and audio cue as soon the umbrella pops out on the charged attack and running attack. This would help make the deflect timing for it easier to learn and understand. They could also build in a counter thrust that actives if you deflect with it but then some might complain that it's too similar to the katana. Maybe instead have it regain a noticeably large chunk of fable if you manage to land a deflect with it's charged or running attack.

Anon having a different moveset isn't a hidden trait.

The katana's R2 feels stronger to me than guard parry weapons and it also doesn't cost fable. The timing is harder though since it's delayed and you can't perform it consecutively. If you use guard parry way too early it's possible to attempt it again in other words. The katana is more "all or nothing" but it feels absolutely incredible when you get the deflect/counter off then hit them with a second charged R2 and then the fable art sword wave right after. The moveset of two dragons just flows so nicely together with the way you can do the retreating attack and then close that gap again with another light or heavy. The umbrella has my favorite fable art parry. It costs two bars but the window is large, the timing is immediate, and the counter thrust is pretty strong and also has block frames on it since the umbrella pops open. With fable regaining skills and lots of catalysts the umbrella can actually be a beastly counter weapon and is often overlooked.

I think break is fine because it doesn't actually impact the way you play the game, it just increases resource consumption. Shock has an enormous impact on how you play because stam management is a huge thing in this game. If parries didn't consume Stam or you couldn't be guard broken through parries it'd be much less obnoxious

I find it funny that the rapier is basically the strongest DEX weapon in the game for like the majority of it, you basically start off with the best DEX weapon right off the bat. The starting Greatsword is really good too because it has absolute defense and a strong offensive fable art.

My first playthrough was a DEX build and basically used the rapier for 2/3 of the game, honestly might try a fresh playthrough with a STR build (No NG+ stuff) just for fun.

I have two tandem files, Dex is almost done, Str is at the cathedral.

Dex is definitely not lagging behind Str in this game, the rapier does let damage on paper, but hits so often it more than trades off. I actually find it more reliable than the Katana, which hits hard but has too much flair per swing, lots of wushu shit that gets you hit. The rapier is lightning fast, so's the Tyrant knife. I love mixing and matching the two, the rapier blade on the tyrant handle is just Needle from GoT.

        Anonymous

Yeah, I think rapier is the fastest weapon in the game next to one of the daggers, and it can hit multiple times with almost no lag/down time, the swing speed on the katana is slower for sure.

        Anonymous

I have had the complete opposite experience I feel. The large weapons let you stun bosses and deliver fatal attacks pretty often with only minimal parrying. They are vulnerable to stagger off the raw damage alone. Whereas a boss is almost dead before they can get staggered by the rapiers.

probably because normal attacks and combos accumulate much more damage as you keep unlocking the P organ for all those extra bonus damage conditions
the amulets also can contribute greatly: arm of god + conquering + extreme modification with the 5 fable slots + one of the amulets to deal damage to a specific type of enemy = like a total of 50% or more of your total damage after a perfect block

Puppets are weak to electricity and Carcasses are weak to fire, also apparently the elemental buff raises the damage dealt by the weapon by 50%. Using an electric weapon for the first half of the game gives you an advantage since you're fighting mostly puppet enemies. When you get to Moonlight Town/Cathedral you can switch to a flame weapon since you're fighting nothing but Carcasses.

I don't know what acid is suppose to do or what's weak against it, I guess both types of enemies are weak against acid? I'm not sure if acid is the superior elemental or what, never really tested it out. I remember trying an acid weapon and it took like TEN hits to inflict acid debuff on an enemy, but fire and shock take only 3-4 hits to inflict the debuff.

yeah maybe it takes getting used to but I'm finding this approach less productive then caving stuff in with a big str weapon, even with 50 advance
        Isn't acid for humans?

Ah, forgot about human enemies, but they're so few and far between it's probably really situational. Most of the enemies are Carcasses and Puppets, don't know how many human enemies you actually fight in the game beside the Stalker bosses/minibosses. I guess an acid weapon would be good for those specific fights.

there are a lot of human enemies in chapters 10 and 11 and the acid spear is the best advance weapon anyway

Most of them I think are at least potentially cool. Mine layer is a fun concept, thunderpalm is kinda cool, I like gun.
Flamethrower is STUPID boring though. I only ever used it on archbishop because I was tired of clanking on his butt. There's really no excuse for it either, because the sekiro flamethrower are cool, and this one is so not

It's kind of the same way people felt about the shinobi tools in Sekiro, which they're plainly modeled after.

At least Puppet String is kino. It's hard to want to use anything else except in VERY specific situations. It sucks how bad the fire arm is, the overheat buildup on enemies just takes too long.

I wouldn't say they're "half assed" at all. Most of them are good, the only issue is that it takes a long time to upgrade them. They really reach their full capabilities only when you max them.

My favorite arm still goes to Falcon Eyes. If you have a technique focused stat spread then it's great once maxed. The dodge shot is good for spacing and makes it very usable against aggressive enemies and bosses. It can't fully stagger when white but it'll still help build up to that point pretty well. The range makes it great for going through levels and if you combine it with legion restore upon enemy defeated and auto legion restore then you'll be able use it fairly often. I had high capacity which helped too.

That's phase 7 I think, can't remember what phase 6 gives you, but you get phase 6 on NG+ and then phase 7 on NG++ gives you those abilities.

      It's so fricking nice.
They should have had a mild passive regen and second arm slot available from the start.

    HOW TO GET THE ENDINGS:

Bad one (?): Just give your heart at the end. It is worth seeing just for how creepy the hotel becomes by doing this.

Normal one: raise your humanity to the point you can pet the cat in the hotel. Spare Sophia and refuse to yield your heart.

True (?) ending: do everything you can to max your humanity, mercy kill Sophia and refuse to yield your heart.

You'll still get the normal one if you give Sophia peace and your humanity isn't high enough. It all comes down to your humanity level when you talk to her.

I felt like shit after I told him I was just a puppet and he freaked out. I assumed I should keep lying and that was clearly a lie by that point. I fricked up.

Falcon Eye actually does pretty good damage if you max it out and pump a shit ton of points into technique. Puppet String is good and Aegis has it's uses as well. I mean, they're not all completely useless.

If you get the legion quartz upgrades to auto regen legion or raise damage of legion attacks then Falcon Eye becomes even more intense. I think right now one shot from my Falcon Eye does 1,300-1,500 damage. If I fire two shots in a row then it's probably about 3,000 damage. I never tested the mine one, don't know how much damage it does, but I can see it being good for boss fights, can just set mines and lure the boss to them.

The acid one I guess is good for an advanced build, not sure if does good damage or not. I guess you could like shock someone and then apply acid, or set them on fire and then apply acid. I don't know if debuffs stack or if one overwrites the other, if you could apply fire and acid at the same time then I imagine that's a lot of DoT at once.

the Aegis shield trivializes all boss fights

      Anonymous

Falcon Eyes is wonderful for general exploration through areas, lots of annoyances are easily overcome with 2 shots killing 95% of enemies.

Puppet string is a motivity user's best friend. You basically get a free strong attack that will hit pretty reliably with gap close.

Ive heard good things about the shield but havent used it.

I suspect the mines are good for wombo combos.

I want to like the elemental ones, but once you can actually afford lots of grindstones you dont really need them anymore.

I thought the same but that max puppet string is the coolest shit, also fun getting smacked after using it and seeing how far into the air the boss can send you.

How does the Aegis shield work? Sometimes it explodes them but there was one visual where it knocks back and you can punch with it?

      Anonymous

oh and you probably mean the full upgrade? you must block the attack, stop pressing the trigger then press it again to do a devastating charge attack
looks cool but it is very hard to pull off successfully because the charging takes so long

There’s a parry upgrade if I remember right. I didn’t use it much after I got addicted to GUN. If you look above the Legion meter when you have Aegis equipped there’s a little yellow circle and if you block a hit Aegis will explode and that circle will turn into a timer. Once the timer is over you can get another explosion, but you can also use the shield to block in general. It seems to block better than normal blocking at the expense of burning Legion meter

How does the Aegis shield work? Sometimes it explodes them but there was one visual where it knocks back and you can punch with it?

when you first activate the shield the first hit you block will do the little explosion thing, but if you keep the trigger pressed you will keep the shield up
there is some weird interaction if you keep the shield up and rapidly press the normal block button, as any incoming hits will be blocked as perfect parries, so you can just keep the shield up doing that against enemies like nameless puppets, the big bro rabbit or laxasia and they will wear themselves out and their hp bar will flash white for you to counterattack them

Just finished watching Asmongold playing this game, and I feel like it's a solid 6/10. The story tries too hard to have the "weightiness" that souls games have, but it comes off as unearned because fundamentally the game is about a robot uprising. You can't slip in phrases like "arm of god" into a game about puppets and have it feel natural. The voice acting is cringe, and only undermines the tone the game tries to set. You ever notice how chinese products will copy the minute details of an american product, without understanding why they're there? For example, they'll copy obvious manufacturing defects because they don't have a fundemental understanding of the product, they can only copy. That's what this game feels like. A copy of systems (and writing, tone, environmental design, etc) that work in Souls games, without a deeper understanding of why they work.

If you can respec at the tree then what's the point of the statue?

      Anonymous

The tree was really good thematicvframing for fricko there after he gives that big long speech about how he's going to save humanity and then he gives you a respect ability and it's like "damn this guy maybe isn't so bad, what the frick did gepetto ever do for me" which is fine but the mechanical incongruity of only getting respec like 2/3rds into the game kinda fricks it up, especially when blue hair guy hints at the statue HOURS ahead of time.
Currently I guess it just serves as a nice backdrop for that Sophia conversation

You find telephones throughout Krat where Riddlegay will give you a riddle. Answer em right and he will give you a key which opens one of those marked doors with the triangle on em like in V Works

Dodges do have them but they aren't active against red fury attacks. You can still use dodging to avoid some fury attacks though just by moving your hitbox out of the way in time. There's a boss accessory as well that makes it so your iframes work on fury attacks.
