It's amazing how being the protagonist changes a person's perspective on the character. If Oersted's past were shown in a sad backstory cutscene nobody would like it, but because you control him for as long as you do it's completely justified.

Personally I think it was lingering darkness from the Demon Lord Hasshe killed. When Streighbough found the location he got corrupted by the lingering darkness - when you fight him you see him using the same purple aura the demon lord used.

Though that doesn't explain the seven statues that await Oersted in the Demon Lord's lair

Love how they both start with an “O”

      Anonymous

It's a stable time loop. Oersted created the other alternate versions of Odio based on the statues he found in the Archon's Roost, and scattered them throughout time to prove humanity's worthlessness. They are incarnations of him, both past and future. At the same time, a previous incarnation of Odio in the Middle Ages that was slain by Hasshe lingered around as a spirit, probably possessed Streibough (which is why Streibough gets the Odio-signature Megalomania boss music), and directed Oersted into taking the mantle of Odio, thus securing his own creation.

Oersted was preyed upon by Odio, but also is Odio's source.

      >adaptation is better than the source material
I really want to like Near Future but its pacing feels so much weaker than the rest of the game that it ruins the experience for me. That's without even mentioning Dr. Tobei's hellscape item refinement. That said, character designs for this chapter are still 10/10.

Distant Future might be my favorite of the original seven chapters of the game. For a game that embraces cliches and tropes often, I was waiting for the obvious "twist" that the guy named after Darth Vader would be the traitor. I couldn't be more glad that I was wrong.

I went in mostly blind for my first playthrough. I killed in most fights I got into, but I tried to stealth wherever I could. Kinda neat that the remake's ending of the chapter changes slightly based on the playthrough now. Debating between revisting this chapter after beating the game, or doing it before starting the finale.

While I agree that the joke was too juvenile for Sundowner, I don't think it brought down the character.

Sundowner has only one line of dialogue that's truly relevant to his character and the Remake handled it excelent.
      >It's been a long, long time since I've had the chance to do something good and decent. That's reward enough.

On that note I really liked Akira's English VA when he talks Oersted down if he's the main character during the ending.

Mostly localization i don't think there was too much of a change gameplay wise, i didn't like how they pretty much copy-pasted how octopath looks and put in the game, shit was way too bright

Worth a playthrough if for nothing else than the new finale. It's really just another phase to Final Odio, but it really is fricking spectacular, and it's something I'd recommend experiencing yourself if you haven't already been spoiled. Just pirate/emulate it if you don't want to shell out however much for it, it's on Switch so it shouldn't be that hard.

now its just how were gonna bring the old heroes back like
would it be some years after LAL or immediately after they got back to there old timelines so pretty much no time has past for them
maybe add 2 new heroes one being another scientist that wants to stop the other from fricking with the timeline

so pretty much adding a present time

            >Do you know how much localization changed?
Every single line in the game was changed. There is not a single dialogue in the whole game that is completely faithful to the japanese script.
There are times when a character laughs but in the localization he is given whole dialogues and in a very specific chapter they near completely change a character's backstory and change the story to make a character who literally did nothing wrong into having been a selfish butthole all along.

Medieval chapter. They changed a lot of Streibough's backstory when it comes to Alethea and the character they changed to having been a selfish butthole all along was Oersted

                Anonymous

Listen, while I'm not trying to excuse the changes, I want to at least note that everything said is straight from Straybow's mouth. And let's not pretend he's a reliable narrator by any regard. Still a dumb change, but it's not black and white.

                Anonymous

Iirc Alethea herself confirmed that she and Streybough were already in love before the story even began, which proved that he didn't lie in the shitty localization

                Anonymous

Not really. Straybow is a petty butthole blinded by jealously who WE SEE USE DECEPTION to fake his own death, him saying Oersted was a selfish butthole is obviously suspect and not confirmed just because Alethea did love him

                Anonymous

Alethea and Straybow being in love from the start massively changes the context of the whole opening act of the chapter. It makes Oersted into a selfish jackass who didn't care about that love and won her hand anyways.

                What a moronic fricking change.

                Anonymous

Not really. Oersted would only be a jackass if he knew Streibough and the Princess were in love, but he obviously didn't know, since Alethea and Steibough both give speeches to inform him of their love. It's like hitting on a chick at a bar who doesn't wear a wedding ring and finding out too late she had a husband - that's not you're fault, it's the fault of the dumb b***h who should have told people she loved Streibough

That doesn't change the fact that they changed the story so that she and streybough knew each other before the story began and were always in love and just with that change alone the translation would suck.

Yeah people focus too much on the princess and they ignore all the nuances of Oersted story.

Oersted was tricked into killing the king, lost his glory as a champion, was branded as a demon, and everything was orchestrated by none other than the one he believed was his good friend. And all he really did wrong was fighting fair and won the tournament.

Yes, but there were some new lines added in the remake iirc, and there were a couple instances where I think the remake did the translation better (i.e., the twist about The Prisoner's identity is kept secret until the ending in the remake whereas you just need to read the party tab to see it in the translation). Probably good to just use the old translation as a baseline, compare it to the remake, take what works, and then edit and revise from there.

Everything was Streighbou's fault for being such a little b***h.

    >Isn't allowed to win the tournament
    >Instead of just facing his fate like a man impersonates the demon lord and steals the princess
    >Gets the OG hero killed
    >Frames Oersted and the sage by getting the king killed and forcing the sage into a situation where he sacrifices himself for Oersted
    >Gets taken out by Oersted because he's still fundamentally a little b***h
    >Lies to the princess that he's her saviour when the entire time he's just been a piece of shit causing the princess to be so deluded she kills herself.

Oersted did literally nothing wrong. If I'd had everything I'd fought for taken from me by a snippy little b***h causing me to be chased out of the kingdom and denied my prize/love (not mentioning Streighbou's plan resulted in him dying because he's still fundamentally a b***h) I'd be so pissed it'd spread through time and space too.

      >no reason to doubt him
      >knight arrives to fight the mage, your true lover
      >knight kills him
      >suicide because you believe you have no future where you can be happy

      >can't even move on to the afterlife
      >stuck looking at the ghost of the guy who gaslit you while trapped in a dungeon
      >even if the knight is defeated, none of the lives lost will be restored including your own
I really wish we got to see more of Alethea's and Streibough's reactions to the aftermath of The Lord of Dark. If Streibough just manned up, talked to Oersted about his feelings at the start of the chapter, and didn't keep the secret panel hidden from everyone, everything could've been avoided easily. I understand the moral of Live a Live is that we're all responsible for our reactions to the hardships we face, but not having Streibough reflect on that theme more is incredibly missed potential.

You got two facts wrong though:
        >your entire future and who you'll marry is left up to the winner of a tournament
In japanese iirc the winner was only given the possibility of courting her.
        >the mage you were rooting for loses to his best friend, a mute blonde
        Made up by the localization

          Anonymous

          >In japanese iirc the winner was only given the possibility of courting her.
Well, the king says the winner shall receive 求婚する権利, the right to propose marriage to her. But after Oersted wins she says she'd be glad to be Oersted's wife, and the king says "Let us celebrate the victor, and his marriage to Alicia (アリシアとの結婚を)-- nay, let us celebrate the two who will build the future of Lucretia". I guess it could be implied that when the king gives you permission to propose to his daughter you cannot refuse.

The manga adapatation is unironically the definitive way to experience Near Future since it trims a lot of filler, fleshes out Lawless and Akira’s father more, and generally just makes the story and characters a lot more interesting - and without having Akira steal from the orphanage. What's your personal rating for each chapter? Medieval and Final are optional, we all already know the answer
    >Prehistoric
Peak slapstick and filled with charm. Only negative I guess is that Odo didn't get enough time to shine, but his role in the story still works well. Not much to say about it other than its a fun experience all around, though its staying power is minimal
    >Feudal Japan
Best gameplay and feeling of player choice in the game. While the story isn't much to speak of, the premise and execution more than make up for it. The number one chapter where repeat playthroughs are a must
    >Wild West
Kidd as a glass cannon is fantastic and fits the theme well, but basing the entire chapter around setting up traps for a single boss fight was a weird choice that I wasn't too crazy about. I think I would've liked a premise like A Fistful of Dollars where Kidd infiltrates the gang to sabotage their raid on the town instead, then having the boss fight and the number of enemies in it vary like the original chapter. The rivalry with Mad Dog sells the chapter however
    >China
A very basic premise and setup until the second half of the chapter where things finally get interesting. Despite the differences in potential successors, I dont really know if its worth replaying unless you're that interested in seeing what the others have for dialogue and interactions.
    >Modern
Best combat and second best version of Odio. I don't have much to say about it other than loving the mechanic for learning your opponents' skills and the SF2 love letter
    >Near Future
Would be the best chapter if it weren't for the sluggish pacing. The ending is annoyingly anticlimactic as well.
    >Distant Future
Best chapter of the starting 7. If I'm not mistaken, this is the original inspiration for RPG Maker horror games. Does a fantastic job of making the conflict in the crew feel very real and human. Might be one of the most satisfying Odio fights in the game

I like how distinct each chapter is, how they slowly start to link together with the watanbes and Odie. I like how after playing as the seven heroes you learn why Odio ended up like he did, and boy did they justify the heck out of it.

With all the what-a-tweest moments in vidya, I always wanted a game where it would turn out the character you controlled was the villain and you, the player, didn't know it. Who would have guessed such a game had already been released in fricking 1994.

They butchered the medieval chapter so hard in the remake, the english version specially
    >everyone speaks in really verbose shakespearean english that gets old fast
    >difficulty drop makes all the fights a joke, Claustrophobia and Gynophobia got hit extra hard
    >they gave Oersted battle dialogue making his breakdown way less effective.

I like the iambic pentameter. Agreed they should have waited until the end of the chapter to give Oersted dialogue

        >I like the iambic pentameter
My biggest gripe with it is how it makes the final message of the game so obtuse, I might just be a moron, but if I hadn't played the snes version first, I would have no idea what Oersted's warning was when you beat him.

This game was a fricking masterpiece and I will be FOREVER fricking MAD that we didn't get this when we should have. This would have been a huge influence in the west had it made it over, but no, it never did.

    FRICK Square for this.

      >In an interview with the magazine Super Play, Square localization staff member Ted Woolsey said that its overseas release was unlikely due to its low graphical quality compared to other popular titles at the time

I've only read that one article but I'd say the Bahamut Lagoon one

Live-A-Live was worse. Bahamut Lagoon let's protagonist not give a crap about the princess via dialogue choices from the very beginning so the romance is there only if you want it, and there is plenty people in the game that drools over protag.
Live-A-Live NTR is set in stone and there is nothing you can do about that.

Bahamut Lagoon. Live A Live's NTR was there to give Oersted motivation. BL's was there because the writer was a seething homosexual out of a bad break up.

I thought that added last boss was really lame. I went in completely unprepared and it was still piss-easy. I did like the caveman post victory cutscene I'll give it that
