They're definitely building up to a Wutai-Shinra war subplot for game three so I would be surprised if the group didn't make a field trip out of it. Personally, I'm more interested to see how they're gonna expand Cid's backstory. I don't buy Rebirth's explanation of "I'm just a freelancer taxi service and that's that". There's gotta be a connection to him and the Highwind.

When you start chapter 12 and you are about to dock in costa del sol Cid says he still works for shinra because they have their uses, but he also values freedom, that's probably the hook into his plot like the original game

Rebirth's Dyne got me because I'm a dad of daughters. Him pushing Barret out of the way to not only make sure he lives but make sure he carries the guilt/weight with Marlene was kino. Japanese VA knocked it out of the park.
Ironically though, Marlene ends up calling Cloud daddy.

eh, it's decent game loop. Sometimes you just want to explore the map after a long string of bosses. And rotating between tower, fiend challenge, and chocobo stop has a real synergy to it. Some of the fiends you encounter are actually pretty challenging too.
Nobody who actually plays it hates the battle system. It is the best JRPG system in the last 2 decades.
The story changes are a coin flip. Red XIII breaking out MJ dance moves is so Japanese I love it. But I hate the changes like Dyne not killing himself.

original scene was over in a flash and players were dumbstruck. here we were just cringing and scratching our heads thinking what the frick is even going on? did they or didn't they? they botched it hard here, no room to react one way or another until the credits roll.
I've grown used to the idea of subverted expectations and clearly wanting to take things a new direction, but it feels like this entire outcome is a garbled mess. I'm gonna currently go with the idea that she's dead but Cloud distorting fate even if briefly combined with the Remake shit has opened his eyes to the Lifestream itself and Aerith's ghostly presence from it. It still fricks with the entire intent and scene afterwards though, no matter how deliberately they tried to work with this in mind, and there was absolutely no reason for fricking Bizarro/Reborn to be fighting us here at the mid-point of the story. I don't even hate the Zack fanservice brief though it was, or Aerith coming up to support the final phase with Cloud, it's just this whole thing is a nonsensical mess of appealing to the theorycrafters without any actual substance to work off of.

He didn't save her, that's an illusion Aerith placed in order to protect him. At this point, compared to the OG, Cloud's mental is breaking faster than it should be, due to Sephiroth meddling earlier on. This shit is hinted all over Remake. Remember that he almost killed some troops before Tifa stopped him. That was the first sign that Cloud is acting way out of line from what we knew of him. Then it finally happened in Rebirth during the Temple. Dude even have the same pose as Sephiroth. Back to the death scene, you're basically experiencing her death from Cloud's eye. That's why the tv breaking sound, is going crazy when he hugged her dead body. It's when illusion Aerith opened her eye, where it stops. Ever since then Cloud acts like Aerith never died.

I think FF10 (and FF12) were the only games that tried to do interesting combat encounters, granted they were limited mostly to bosses. FF7 only had ruby weapon that required playing with the materia system (or cheese with kotor)

Well, FF7 remake/rebirth literally makes every character control differently. Some can only attack long-range. Others can only do short range. Some can do aerial, others can't. In a way, it continued FF10's design philosophy to its natural conclusion. I find that hard not to appreciate.

To me its not about the characters, its about the encounter design itself. Every boss in FF10 is unique and they add something new to the mix, its very enjoyable to play low level, because if you know how to deal with these encounters you can still win. For example my favorite is the infamous filter Evrae which youccan make completely joke by casting reflect on it before its second phase so it can never haste itself (bonus points if you slowed it before). FF12 isnt as in depth as 10, FF12 relies more on preparation where you set up the right gear and gambits and think of every encounter as a puzzle. Other FF games really dont put any thought at all in the encounters. SMT: Nocturne takes FF10 encounter design to new heights.

I think it's less offensive in Rebirth tbqh. It doesn't actually reveal the topography of the map - you still have to explore. And at worst each of them just gives you 2-3 new things to go check out (typically either miniboss fights or things to help you with other boss fights in the combat simulator) rather than littering the map with dozens of useless points of ''''''interest'''''. The truly useless POIs you still just have to stumble upon yourself while you're exploring and if you don't wanna do the moronic treasure chest hunts you just move on

I agree, this mission is hard for all the wrong reasons. I eventually did it solo with Barret for his high HP and defenses. Took me 40 frustrating minutes of just running around the perimeter taking potshots at the Mindflayer and restarting every time one of those self-destructing chucklefricks got their slithering mitts on me. I'm doing the advanced colosseum challenges right now and as sanity-fraying as they are, I still don't think they're as bullshit as Head Case.

I really liked the game, minus the ending because I'm annoyed they didn't commit harder to changing things (not the death necessarily), but I can't help but fill like this game felt like filler. Part 1 was clearly a big set up and the ending left a lot of unanswered questions. Rebirth starts immediately by going "remember aeriths fun future sight and the whole defying fate thing? thats done now don't worry about that." Just to then do it again at the end with the rainbow shit. Barett Yuffie and Nanaki got some great story bits but the rest just felt weaker than I was hoping. I really would have rather just waited another year or two and had parts 2/3 be the rest of the game than have this.

Writing for characters is good, but sometimes during the man story and side stories it feels like the writers are talking down to the player because of how sanitized it tends to feel. Feels like it's written for 6yo kids or something.
If someone says something positive about the game, they don't have to explain themselves. If someone says something negative about the game they must be questioned into submission before inevitably having their point dismissed.

more swappable party profiles. swappable materia profiles. drop chadley. new PHS system that manages intel, scanning, taking photos, and all of your combat trials and missions and the map. if you must keep chadley or mai, let the player choose which one they want and keep them on the PHS only. no Chadley magically showing up at every single town when he could just be on the phone exclusively. design unique little phone models for each character. allow the ability to hot swap between all party members at any time ALA the costa del sol cactuar caper mission where you can switch between Aerith and Tifa whenever you want.

The OG Dyne scene was overly edgy. He wanted to kill Marlene to join him and Eleanor in death, then he an heros.
Rebirth's Dyne got me because I'm a dad of daughters. Him pushing Barret out of the way to not only make sure he lives but make sure he carries the guilt/weight with Marlene was kino. Japanese VA knocked it out of the park.
Ironically though, Marlene ends up calling Cloud daddy.

eh, it's decent game loop. Sometimes you just want to explore the map after a long string of bosses. And rotating between tower, fiend challenge, and chocobo stop has a real synergy to it. Some of the fiends you encounter are actually pretty challenging too.

I've grown used to the idea of subverted expectations and clearly wanting to take things a new direction, but it feels like this entire outcome is a garbled mess. I'm gonna currently go with the idea that she's dead but Cloud distorting fate even if briefly combined with the Remake shit has opened his eyes to the Lifestream itself and Aerith's ghostly presence from it. It still fricks with the entire intent and scene afterwards though, no matter how deliberately they tried to work with this in mind, and there was absolutely no reason for fricking Bizarro/Reborn to be fighting us here at the mid-point of the story. I don't even hate the Zack fanservice brief though it was, or Aerith coming up to support the final phase with Cloud, it's just this whole thing is a nonsensical mess of appealing to the theorycrafters without any actual substance to work off of.
I prefer they really make your affection affect what timeline you re stuck with and put the canon ending+ aerith dig in water and cloud schizo after credits
He didn't save her, that's an illusion Aerith placed in order to protect him. At this point, compared to the OG, Cloud's mental is breaking faster than it should be, due to Sephiroth meddling earlier on. This shit is hinted all over Remake. Remember that he almost killed some troops before Tifa stopped him. That was the first sign that Cloud is acting way out of line from what we knew of him. Then it finally happened in Rebirth during the Temple. Dude even have the same pose as Sephiroth. Back to the death scene, you're basically experiencing her death from Cloud's eye. That's why the tv breaking sound, is going crazy when he hugged her dead body. It's when illusion Aerith opened her eye, where it stops. Ever since then Cloud acts like Aerith never died.

I think FF10 (and FF12) were the only games that tried to do interesting combat encounters, granted they were limited mostly to bosses. FF7 only had ruby weapon that required playing with the materia system (or cheese with kotor)
I mean, I get why people like FF10's combat system (less so FF12). Every character in FF10 had different speed stats so faster characters had more turns but hit less hard. It made every character feel different.
Well, FF7 remake/rebirth literally makes every character control differently. Some can only attack long-range. Others can only do short range. Some can do aerial, others can't. In a way, it continued FF10's design philosophy to its natural conclusion. I find that hard not to appreciate.
To me its not about the characters, its about the encounter design itself. Every boss in FF10 is unique and they add something new to the mix, its very enjoyable to play low level, because if you know how to deal with these encounters you can still win. For example my favorite is the infamous filter Evrae which youccan make completely joke by casting reflect on it before its second phase so it can never haste itself (bonus points if you slowed it before). FF12 isnt as in depth as 10, FF12 relies more on preparation where you set up the right gear and gambits and think of every encounter as a puzzle. Other FF games really dont put any thought at all in the encounters. SMT: Nocturne takes FF10 encounter design to new heights.
And to add to this, boss drops are random in ff10 so in every playthrough you have to improvise a bit.

I think it's less offensive in Rebirth tbqh. It doesn't actually reveal the topography of the map - you still have to explore. And at worst each of them just gives you 2-3 new things to go check out (typically either miniboss fights or things to help you with other boss fights in the combat simulator) rather than littering the map with dozens of useless points of ''''''interest'''''. The truly useless POIs you still just have to stumble upon yourself while you're exploring and if you don't wanna do the moronic treasure chest hunts you just move on

I agree, this mission is hard for all the wrong reasons. I eventually did it solo with Barret for his high HP and defenses. Took me 40 frustrating minutes of just running around the perimeter taking potshots at the Mindflayer and restarting every time one of those self-destructing chucklefricks got their slithering mitts on me. I'm doing the advanced colosseum challenges right now and as sanity-fraying as they are, I still don't think they're as bullshit as Head Case.

I really liked the game, minus the ending because I'm annoyed they didn't commit harder to changing things (not the death necessarily), but I can't help but fill like this game felt like filler. Part 1 was clearly a big set up and the ending left a lot of unanswered questions. Rebirth starts immediately by going "remember aeriths fun future sight and the whole defying fate thing? thats done now don't worry about that." Just to then do it again at the end with the rainbow shit. Barett Yuffie and Nanaki got some great story bits but the rest just felt weaker than I was hoping. I really would have rather just waited another year or two and had parts 2/3 be the rest of the game than have this.

Combat is good but the rpg elements are there to basically just waste your time without adding anything meaningful to the experience. The entire folio system is dogshit and skills from it should have come with level ups.
Materia is good but nothing sucks more than going to a fight with a wrong loadout and having to load a save to be able to change to a correct one.
Most minigames are bad. QB and Chocobo Racing are the only decent ones.
Writing for characters is good, but sometimes during the man story and side stories it feels like the writers are talking down to the player because of how sanitized it tends to feel. Feels like it's written for 6yo kids or something.
If someone says something positive about the game, they don't have to explain themselves. If someone says something negative about the game they must be questioned into submission before inevitably having their point dismissed.

I want this gameplay in every new FF going forward and I hope that part 3 uses the auto traversal mechanic for progression more. the directional climbing gimmick that appears at the very end on the vines should be used to climb all kinds of surfaces in the overworld. they did a good job adding new ways to traverse but there's still too much just moving forward up and down. you can design areas and puzzles around that style of climbing where you have to find your way up and around hazards and making jumps. no yellow bricks pls.
more swappable party profiles. swappable materia profiles. drop chadley. new PHS system that manages intel, scanning, taking photos, and all of your combat trials and missions and the map. if you must keep chadley or mai, let the player choose which one they want and keep them on the PHS only. no Chadley magically showing up at every single town when he could just be on the phone exclusively. design unique little phone models for each character. allow the ability to hot swap between all party members at any time ALA the costa del sol cactuar caper mission where you can switch between Aerith and Tifa whenever you want.

This whole moronic cult of "yeah bro I gotta wait on max's thoughts for this" has been fricking absurd
There's way too much content, and most of it isn't that bad, even the sidequests are pretty good and take you to new areas, give you new boss fights, new character interactions etc
The only one that looks like a slog is the chocobo race, there's like 30 of them and they all seem braindead if you have the latest chocobo and have the chocobo gear , it's just a matter of grind
The game would flow much better if it wasn't littered with so much bullshit. You can see the design quota clear as fricking day. Each mini-game must be used no less than 4 times. Every proto-relic quest must be 4 parts per region, etc. And it doesn't help that doing so much in this game is a complete and total fricking slog.

But I feel like for every enhancement, there is also a mistake. Both with gameplay and story.
I love the idea of Cloud turning on Tifa, but the consequences were nothing. She should have acted afraid of Cloud untill his schizophrenic confession.
The technology is all retro futuristic in design, but not for chadley and random shinra holographic shit.
The battle system is perfect, but there is still stupid slow walking segments despite the improvement to loading times on the PS5.
