did you guys like this series is it worth playing through?

I just beat the first game. holy frick was this game was hard. by the end of it you're so fricking good you blow the boss rush away... a million retry chips later. that said I didn't use element chips or elfs until the final boss... mostly cause I'm an idiot not cause I wanted the challenge.

Oh abso-fricking-lutely. The first game had a steep difficulty curve, but the rest of the games are the X formula refined.

Also, watch the commercials. They were a feast for the eyes:

They were made in Capcom’s platinum years where Inafune made the weird decision to let artists lead all the projects and everything magically was turning out great.

wow those commercials are pretty epic aha. I actually really like the redesign! reminds me more of classic mega man art then the x series

Where? When I see that style, it's always Toru Nakayama drawing it, with only rare exceptions drawn by Makoto Yabe as he says he deeply admires Nakayama.

        >gunvolt
That's it. Mega Man Zero and Gunvolt are both Inti Creates. I've heard Gunvolt is similar, but I have not played them so I don't know.

          Anonymous

They look similar and the series is basically another Megaman spin-off in all but name, but the gameplay is very different. Instead of the traditional jump'n shoot Gunvolt's focused more on tagging enemies with your pistol and then dealing real damage with his area of effect skill, the flashfield. It's significantly easier than most of Inti's Megaman output if you just play to beat the stage and move on, but the real emphasis is on getting high scores and combos.

The sequels also let you play as GV's rival, Copen, but his gameplay is a completely different beast.

At first I liked this game. The music was pretty good, especially Sinners Row. Then I really really started to fricking hate this game. It was the electric field he does that makes it hard to see the enemy projectiles. It was just flashy diarrhea on the screen. I played the X series, the Zero series, and the ZX series, but I couldn't finish the first Gunvolt.

I liked it. The ranking system is a pain in the ass if you want to get S on every mission but the challenge of trying to pass every stage perfectly is great.
1 and 2 are very difficult with certain design choices many don't like, but it gets better on the other games: gameplay peaks on 3 and 4 gets funky with the Glove gimmick but the conclusion makes it worth the time.
The music is great through all four games, so give a listen to the arranged soundtracks when you can.

it's been a while since i last played the game, but can't you stand on the right where the enemy is so that you won't fall? although, it falls right away, so you'd probably have to kill it while standing there, which is unlikely

No, you have to fall down on the pit by the second Bee Blader and climb up. It's mandatory. Even the manga where X cries had this kek.

Both of the Bee Bladers let you stand behind them where the bridge doesn't collapse. (second one is pic related) So it's not outright impossible to have beaten the intro without learning how to wall-jump, though I heavily doubt OP would think to damage boost directly them on a first playthrough, and not stay back to the left.
OP also didn't specify whether Sting was impossible because of the boss fight being really fricking hard, or because of the required wall-jump (pic related) to make it there in the first place.

He wouldn't have specified "hit it" if he was stuck on the ledge in the middle of the stage. OP made it to the boss (which requires walljumps in the middle of the stage like you said) and is therefore a homosexual

Why do you tards talk like the boots are some kind of secret meta aspect of the game and not literally impossible to not pick up? It's impossible to progress the stage without them. You're as bad as the guy saying he didn't know he could wall jump.

I liked it a lot. Feels very good to play, has a nice aesthetic, fairly challenging.

The only real complaint is that the screen is a bit zoomed in which makes playing it in a fast paced manner a bit harder than it should be. But it's not TOO bad and you can still have a lot of fun blazing through stages.

There are also a lot of autists who cry and fart and shit themselves over anything vaguelly action-rpg-ish and insist that the totally optional cyber-elves (which the game is more or less balanced around not using and exist only as an easy mode crutch and the game actively guilt trips you for using) somehow ruin the game. But they're homosexual autist morons and not worth considering.

With every new Zero game they got easier and easier. The first is the only one with real challenge. Zero 2 i played at points with one hand as i was eating snacks and beat 4 bosses that way. All are good but you’ll never get the challenge of the first one again. Personally 2 is my favorite, opening scene in the desert is sex.

As an anon that bought all these games on release and loves them an embarrassing amount, Z4 is 100% harder than Z3, so long as you're approaching it from a normal mid-gamer standpoint. There's the regressive QoL changes re: cyber elves, weaponry and chips - making it so that you had to wait til endgame to enable significant elf effects and couldn't just get double satellites right off the bat, hiding stuff like shadow dash and double jump behind esoteric recipe deciphering and random part drops, and stripping you of boomerang+rod weapons in favor of a fist/weapon steal with short range and questionable trial and error utility; there's the mission weather system that basically forces you into obnoxious gimmicks for every stage if you don't want to get penalized on rankings; and, and this is the big one for me, the way in which you have to dodge enemy attacks is way more technical in ways you really wouldn't... expect, for the last game in a same-engine quadrilogy?

Take pic related (and his awesome theme, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYoUqLB1vL0); I *distinctly* remember tearing my hair out as a kid trying to figure out how to no-hit him, because that charged laser gun attack of his is almost 100% undodgable by jumping without chip enhancements - the window's like two frames long to juuuust barely skirt your toes over the top of it at the last possible second. And that's because you're SUPPOSED to dash under it... but the fact that dashing actually lowers the size of your effective hitbox for its duration isn't something that's ever established or forced upon you earlier in the series, so it was an entire mechanic I'd missed from Z1 up through Z3.

And this was coming from a guy so crazy in love with the series I'd spent weeks doing an on-cart Z3 100pt buster only run to unlock the last set of minigames; I was and am legit pretty good at these things, but Z4 definitely ratchets the difficulty back up a notch, at least when blind.

            >so long as you're approaching it from a normal mid-gamer standpoint
You'll have to explain what you mean by this. If I understand, you grind crystals to enhance Zero? But then you miss out on EX Skills, which nulls any advantage Cyber Elves in Z2 and Z3 might have. Z4 gives you the advantage of a Cyber Elf for free from the get go and keep building from it AND gives you the EX Skills without any sort of punishment. If anything while Z2 and Z3 kept unique aspects (like expecting you to keep your base health and learn the combat system properly), Z4 feels like it deals back into being a regular MMX game.

              Anonymous

Yeah I wasn't really sure how to phrase that; I essentially just wanted to express 'it's harder if you're playing it with a normal gamer mindset, IE you aren't necessarily concerned with maxxing challenge, but you will avoid explicit easy mode crutches'.

Like, Z4 DOES allow you to max out all your elf skills super easy, and it DOES let you essentially select easy mode on a per-stage basis, and if you're consulting a guide you can probably whip up subtanks or useful chips earlier than in Z3 (I honestly can't remember)... but in the same way your typical player doesn't really use many Z1/Z2 style cyber elves due to the inherent ranking penalties, I don't see those toggles as something your typical Rockman player is gonna use with any frequency - more like a Mario Bros. guide mode than anything.

It's definitely more forgiving than Z1/Z2 in having those toggles at all, and probably about equal when just bashing your head with the only goal of *finishing* a stage, no matter how well - but when trying to play with any sort of finesse, Z3's easier across the board, IMO. And just to qualify that even more, here's an embarassing MMZ3 challenge fight I uploaded in rotten potato quality over a decade ago - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO5vluqF9sY - I was REALLY searching for difficulty in that one, 'cause while I've always thought Z4 harder Z3's just got the better overall aesthetic, barring the phenomenal Z4 end.

I think that's where I got confused. From personal experience back in the day with some of the kids/teens who did play MMZ and weren't big Mega Man fans, I saw plenty of them grinding the Elves because otherwise "these games are imposible". Granted, it's a small sample pool and it's my own account, not any proof of anything, but just explaining my image of the "normal mid-gamer" person touching MMZ. I only met people in Mega Man forums beating the games legit and going for all EX Skills (and Forms in Z2).

I think it's the most consistent in terms of quality of ANY of the Mega Man series, but Z1 is some bullshit difficulty.

Zero is my favorite MM series overall, although each game is flawed, most notably you have to grind weapon levels in Z1 and Z2, otherwise you can't even charge your weapons.

ZX and ZXA are also worth checking out. Basically the same thing, but you also get to play as the 4 guardians. It's a bit like Demon's Crest (another MM clone made by Capcom) where you can switch between different forms at any time.

why would you go into a mega man zero/x thread and not even know anything about the games? that's a maverick, aka a robot criminal with human ai, so you know he'd be willing to rape other robots, including the cop that's after him

I forgot to add, her grandma genetically experimented on her according to the complete works book thing and that's why she was a super genius who was able for the first time to analyze Dr. Light's designs on X

oh cool thats pretty wild where is that story? just in the art books and stuff or is there some sort of official comic or whatever?

The artbook and Japanese websites used to contain these details. The 2010 Rockman zero site had tidbits that after MM10 Dr Light worked so no virus could affect X to explain X5 and there's an official Audio Play made by Inti where ww learn other details like reploids can't sing. They only play a playback of what they heard but can't truly sing with the MMZ technology.

I always appreciated mega man in general for the excellent art style and graphics. I was never, ever very good at them because I can't be bothered but, I'd keep playing to see more shit. Zero is not exclusive in that quality.

I'd keep playing the games just to see what else the devs decided to put in them.

    edgeMAN

thanks for the recommend /vr/! these games played like x4 or ninja gaiden which I also love. I played the switch version with checkpoints. (highly recommend for x noobs like me...) some of the bosses took me a lot of practice. played a little of the zx series, but metriodvanias aren't my thing... the controls are buttery smooth tho.

    zero 1 - good
    zero 2 - great
    zero 3 - amazing
    zero 4 - good

the series peeked at 3! the story and ending in 4 were good... but 3 was just epic. the entire series story in general was great. zero 3 had no leveling, cool chip collectables, fun combos, switchable elements / body types. I may have started this series an edgeboy, but finished it an edgeman.

what'd you like about it? the first boss was fun then I looked up the map and noped out for now. I feel like we've had a decade of indie (and AAA) metroidvanias. just need a break from that genre.

yeah the map doesn't really add anything to the game but once you know where you're going and once you're in the levels it's a great game. My advice to anybody playing is to use a walkthrough because dicking around in the open world really isn't worth it. The sequel Advent basically gets rid of the map too

Z4 ending part is personally one of the most epic moments in videogames.
Weil is scum of the highest order and you know Zero is going to fight until the end.
It is similar to what happened to Shadow the hedgehog in Adventure 2, and unlike Shadow, Zero didn't return from the grave.
      Biometal Z is not Zero.
