sorry, the 2 should've been more visible
ohhhh i see it now
Gimp is free software.
Weird that there hasn't been a "spiritual sequel" indie game ripping off this gameplay.yet
there's an indie game that is trying to hype off of that nostalgia, even though two seconds into the demo it's obvious that they've never even come close to seeing human Marina.
looks a lot like a mix between Klonoa and MM
That's just Mischief Maker if designed by a Twitter artist with an active porn alt.
Looks like shit, but I'm so starving of experiencing anything close to Mischief Maker fresh again, that I'll go try that Demo right away.
Yeah our best bet these days for every single abandoned franchise is [s]autistic furry tro[/s] I mean millenials making indie games "inspired" by the games they love
The Bug Fables/Paper Mario shilling on this board was so loud I went and purchased it and I'm thankful because it's great
sigh...
it's a good game
I have a friend who holds beef on how they even got Bug Fables up and going.
Unfortunately it's memory holed to hell, so not like anybody gives a damn unless some cares to fan the dirty lanudry
Well keep that shit on the hush. It's not like nintendo is gonna do a sensible and obviously correct thing and produce a true Paper Mario 3 to fan fervor. If those bug story people don't survive to advance the insect tale stuff it will simply die, and before you know it the nukes will drop and no one will ever get to enjoy new paper mario content ever again
Does she grab the objects with her thighs?
Did anyone else try the demo? It looked fantastic but played so fricking dull
UGLY
Actually there are some Western indie games "inspired" by Mischief Makers. Too bad these games get ruined because of tumblr art style and writing.
I hope never
Treasure should trash and burn for dragging Bangai-O in the dirt.
decompile it and hope people use and extend the engine / use it to make expansions or brand new games on it
don't tempt me.
do it for her
for anyone that wants to follow along, looks like this is at least a basic primer:
https://github.com/zeldaret/oot/wiki/Getting-Started#decompiling-your-first-function
so yeah, what kind of aspie does it take to do this in your free time? i guess i'll find out if it's my kind of aspie.
There's a list of every N64 decomp project and there's an inactive one for Mischief Makers, but it might be better than starting from scratch.
https://github.com/Drahsid/mischief-makers
Also possible there is another repo / effort, but I don't know of one.
>no sbk
and now im sad
here's another list of stuff
https://n64.dev/
Neat.
yeah this is looking pretty fricking rough
i've got a bit of programming experience, but it looks like i'll have to do a bunch of reading about MIPS, C, etc etc.
and i just spent the whole day finally learning the basics of using git, so yeah.
today's set of resources
MIPS language guide
http://www.cs.uni.edu/~fienup/cs041s08/lectures/lec20_MIPS.pdf
intro to C
https://www.w3schools.com/c/c_intro.php
intro to compilers
https://www.cs.cornell.edu/courses/cs4120/2021sp/
PhD level compiler course if you're incredibly, incredibly bored
https://www.cs.cornell.edu/courses/cs6120/2020fa/self-guided/
i'll probably give up if this thread dies
well it turns out it's pretty fricking hard to find a list of all the relevant keywords for N64 mips asm.
maybe it's just that they're macros? binutils stuff is hard to search for.
I love Marina. I only ever S-rank'd the first level, I should go try some more but I've got Sin and Punishment queued up and I'm overdue for finally trying it.
http://n64vault.com/ has a lot of tutorials for assembly and MIPS, might be worth checking out.
All I'm seeing here are links to mods
http://n64vault.com/ssb-guides:generally-assembly-hacking-tutorials
Here's the specific page for general ASM and MIPS stuff.
oh that's pretty sick, actually, and exactly what i was looking for. still having trouble finding a full list of commands, tho.
pretty sad that so many old forum links are dead these days.
https://github.com/mikeryan/n64dev/tree/master/docs/n64ops/
This is a list of commands that the N64 uses, found it in the smash bros editing section of n64vault.
Looks like the last commit to it was 18 years ago (!) so there could definitely have been more discovered since then. But this is probably a good resource, I don't understand enough about asm to really get it myself though.
I'm kind of astonished to see a commit that old, if it isn't an error then this commit was made before github was even github, back when it was git and in its first year at that.
this is extremely helpful, thank you.
i've found a couple other things.
https://courses.cs.duke.edu/spring20/compsci250d/MIPS-ASM.pdf
another list of MIPS instructions
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/68318576/mips-errors-with-hi-and-lo
https://binutils.sourceware.narkive.com/pEmHwdVU/hi-and-lo-qualifiers-in-mips-assembly
it took forever, but i finally found some explanation about what %hi and %lo are all about.
at the moment it looks like the last unexplained thing here are these .L##### things. hopefully i just missed it somewhere in all this.
currently it looks like a good way forward is to compare blackgamma7's progress with Drahsid's upstream repository. blackgamma has identified a lot of functions and that makes comparing how the assembly was adapted to C much easier.
i still have absolute shit for tooling for this, though. it looks like just to change the name of a function across all files i'll have to figure out how to not frick up a sed for once.
>i still have absolute shit for tooling for this, though. it looks like just to change the name of a function across all files i'll have to figure out how to not frick up a sed for once.
I don't know if it would work in this case but in my editor I use an LSP which lets you rename symbols across the project. It's not just textual replacement it understands the symbol as a reference.
https://neovim.io/doc/user/lsp.html#vim.lsp.buf.rename()
LSPs have become pretty standard across languages and editors now, exposing the same functionality across them so you could look into this maybe.
There's plenty for C and others
https://langserver.org
so you just figure out which to use and then how to integrate it into your editor.
Neat
>I use an LSP
pretty sick, thanks
Beginner to asm myself but I've never seen .L before. This probably gets into REALLY esoteric barely ever been used stuff.
If you haven't already, you really might want to consider reaching out to some of the discords about this sort of stuff and just asking about it. It could save you a lot of time if there's one or two guys out there who just have an answer ready for you.
Best of luck anon.
Did this win the Nintendo Power entry?
I don't know for sure but now that you mention it that seems familiar.
moar fanart
What? Black person just download the game, god damn.
THROUGH FIRE JUSTICE IS SERVED
Cool
The face is the only part that's kind of weird. Really good otherwise.
Seems hard to do the face in 3d as there are points in the rotation it looks fine and points where it looks weird.

Who even are the voice actors? The credits screen is like 90% "special thanks". Unless I missed it I didn't see any VAs explicitly.
Lunar's line is burned into my mind forever.
Just looked around and I’m surprised I can’t find anything on them.
Neat. This might help track down the others if they're all listed in the same place somewhere.
Literally every example of her work I can find is a spanish dub. Interesting that she was used for the English release.
Mischief Makers Maker is the one I’m holding out hope for.
Mischief Makers 2 already exists. It's called Getting All S Ranks.
Did you finish it yet?
You mean A ranks?
I've started that, and yeah, it's pretty much the same level of bullshit as nohitting the bosses. It's pretty great.
No, I meant S ranks it requires TAS levels of skills, I only ever managed to get 2, one of them on the first level
what the frick, it looks like it's probably doable by humans but i'd believe it if you told me only the developers have actually done it. like jesus, i thought dustforce was bad.
Even speedrunners can't get consistent S-ranks (maybe due to damage-boost, not sure)
the early level one that looks kind of like a damage boost seems to be just a grab parry on a spike ball. didn't know that was possible.
>TAS levels of skill
no it doesn't. you're just fricking bad
yes they can. Not getting them consistantly in an RTA doesn't mean they can't get them in IL's easily. You guys have no idea wtf you're talking about. Also no one even speedruns this game regularly.
>no it doesn't. you're just fricking bad
s-sure... did you S-rank the whole game anon?
Not him, but I did everything except a single boss when I was 12 or so. Pretty sure it was the bird.
I've finally gotten a majority S rank but that took years playing on and off. I don't think I can do the rest without looking up some tricks
Is Treasure still alive? They haven't made a game since S&P 2.
their twitter is still active and they're releasing ports or remasters of some older games
I think only in japland?
you can buy ikaruga on steam.
they've been teasing another game for, from what i've seen, about ten years now?
>NICALIS
Into the trash it goes
Barely
Im surprised they haven't closed doors or get bought out by Inti Creates or Nintendo
Because they barely have any staff at the company and they just exist from re-releases and ports of their older games.
if they are I really hope we get another wario world
god i need marina to give me a handjob
I imagine she will instantly tear your penis off by accident.
Marina is not for sexual
some shitty indie dev will attempt a spiritual successor soon enough
I remember there was a japanese indie game that had a similar concept, can't remember the name.
Mischief Makers has a very polished control scheme, all the different variables you can do with Marina's speed, the jet boosts and all that. I bet it's challenging to replicate.
on this topic, i'm watching the sgdq 2014 run right now, and they're calling boost grabbing an unintended mechanic. obviously the developers intended it to be possible to S rank everything, so does that mean that there's an even harder but more traditional strategy for every level? or are they full of shit and treasure are programming gods who never release a game with an unintended mechanic?
you can S rank every level with out boost cancel.
>or are they full of shit and treasure are programming gods who never release a game with an unintended mechanic?
do you really think stopping the in game timer by talking to NPC's was an intended mechanic? or clipping through floors and zipping?
Don't give up, Anon. People said Geno and Gex would never leave the SE caves either.
I rented this from Blockbuster one time and thought it was the gayest shit ever. Couldn't believe it was a fricking 2D game so I just assumed it was for babies like Yoshi's Story, the only other one I had seen on N64.
that's the main reason it's been overlooked, reviewers at the time have said in retrospect that it was a 2D game when 3D was the hot new thing.
Shake-shake.
You don't have to say all that. Just write them a letter.
shitty game on a shitty console
well it turns out i had a tab i hadn't checked and that has what looks like all of them lol
https://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs61c/resources/MIPS_help.html
now i just need to figure out what stack pointers do, and %hi, and %lo....
Couldn't you just contact Treasure on social media?
Talking about sucking dick right out the gate like that, are you a girl?
could this Black person stop bumping his thread when its almost dying?
i haven't been, actually.
Got the N64 links thanks to that bump!
Never played MM though maybe too prejudiced over the odd art style at the time it was new. Will try to get a copy and have a crack at it
*unzips 3 inch dick*

been a diehard fan of this game ever since my dad bought it for me in a pawn shop when i was a kid. Pic related was a pixel art i made of marina that actually won daily deviation back in 2010 lol

Tricycle level is the best level
Clanpot and Clancer cat levels.
Does mischief makers run on emulators now? I tried five years ago and it would always stutter on the second level. Could never get it to work past that.
Pretty sure Project64 could play it 20 years ago
I had a similar issue. I could never run Mischief Makers, always chug on the first level. The only N64 game I've emulated that would be wonky for me.
played through it on Steam Deck on mupen64, worked just fine.
the default keybinds (right stick for c buttons, hold RT to make face buttons as C buttons) works fine for a playthrough, but once you start even trying to A rank stuff, i've found that having LB/LR as C left and C right, and having the top and left face buttons as C up and down worked better.
it really is one of those games that was built around the specific controller, so i'm seriously considering getting an NSO controller.
Yeah MM was absolutely designed for the N64 controller.
I also strongly encourage anyone who emulates to keep dpad bound to dpad, for the original experience. And because mashing dpad is easier on your hands and controller than mashing stick.
Seems like the Deck would be the next best thing to an N64 pad for MM since you could bind the C buttons to the right trackpad. Probably not as nice as the real thing but certainly better than bullshitting around with the right-stick or coming up with some other compromise.
the trackpads don't really have any kind of feedback in the same way buttons do. scrolling across it you can tell apart different zones, but just laying your finger on it you can't tell buttons apart like you can with face buttons.
They don't even bother porting the original to modern consoles. It didn't even got a Virtual Console port while Sin&Punishment (that was a huge commercial flop when it was first released despite the praise it got) not only got a VC console port but even a sequel.
Unfortunately same goes for many other Treasure games. We don't even have a fantranslation for Sillhouete Mirage.
S&P seems to get some favoritism, probably because Sakurai included the character from it as an assist trophy and that got people curious about it so that’s “the” treasure game that they keep putting out there.
Thread seems to be bump locked due to time limit.
OP if you make progress or need help on the decomp please make a thread about it in the future.
Wait nevermind it was just on page 9. Must have been a fast day.
no yeah that's either autosage or no OP bumps
but yeah i haven't made any progress, motivation lacking
there's a lot of games out there, man
viva treasure
Either way there were a lot of good resources posted in this thread. I'll (very slowly, I'm sure) start making my way through some of them as well.
