monopolies are bad only when they abuse their power as the only supplier, even legally this is the case, a dominant market share is not an issue if it's not being anti-competitive (and no, being the by far best supplier is not being anti-competitive)

They do nothing to impede others from competing aside from offering a superior service while all of their competitors choose to offer the bare minimum.
That isn't their fault. Competition should put in more effort by actually caring about good service and a feature rich platform.

Monopolies are bad, but when the alternative is dogshit competition that sets a bad precedent, I'll take the monopoly.
If GOG became active competition I'd be happy, or if some equivalent showed up. Epic games is worse garbage than shit like uplay and origin and it deserves to pay for it.

It's probably because nobody called Steam a monopoly before Epic started pushing for that narrative, as seen here

If Steam has a monopoly on the PC platform, can you name a gaming platform that doesn't have a store monopoly? And if you can't, why are you singling out Steam specifically?

  16. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Yeah, nothing wrong with a natural monopoly. Valve isn't in the position it is because of paying people to not release their games on competing stores or other underhanded practices like that, Steam just is the best service out there. GOG has a perk by providing DRM-free games, but the rest of the "competition" brings absolutely nothing to the table so nobody gives a frick about them. If Steam goes to shit, there's nothing stopping people from releasing their games elsewhere.

Steam only has a monopoly because its competition is literally moronic and make the absolute worst storefronts possible
GoG is based still though and will always grab singleplayer games from them if I'm not pirating it

I wonder if the existence of gog-games.to is holding back gogchads
sure, piracy is always more of a concern when releasing on gog, but gog-games feels like it makes it even worse because there's a well known, well trusted provider of any gog game that also uploads them quickly

        Anonymous

While I am a gogchad and will support them part of the reason most people pirate even Gog games is because Gog has franky shitty ass server which make it a pain to download large games when a pirate site has more stable serves and download speeds

I’ve bought hundreds of dollars worth of GoG games over the years, but sorry there’s some I won’t pay for especially if it’s a super shitty version that isn’t kept up to date at all. Their whole thing originally was modifying the games a bit with comparability parches so they ran OOB. Instead there’s tons of games that are flat out broken like interstate 76 unless you apply a bunch of fixes after the fact. There’s a whole spreadsheet that is out there that lists all the problems with some releases on GoG. They’re taking customer money for games that are broken out of the box, and that has always pissed me off. They have plenty of time to spam their catalog with porn games but they can’t put one or two employees to work ensuring their Good Old Games are always functional for paying customers.
