Archery. Shooting a bow in Elden Ring sucks. You either have to hope the lock-on keeps up, or you have to manually aim which requires basically standing still, holding down two buttons, and then actually hitting the enemy.

Even Dragon's Dogma 1 is better about it. They just treat it like a gun where you just aim and fire. You can keep moving, you can jump, you can keep shooting arrow after arrow in quick succession, and there are tons of really interesting attacks with the bow including nocking five arrows at once, doing a manually guided arrow, zooming in further to do almost a sniper-esque shot, even loading up an extremely strong arrow that uses all of your stamina in one go to do tons of damage.

I love Elden Ring and all of the Souls games, but using a bow has always been an afterthought to the devs. They can be good, but outside of hyper specific builds, pretty much no one plays the game an "mains" a bow/crossbow, for good reason.

      Anonymous

I've never used a bow or shield in any FS game but I get the feeling they see them as supplementary to melee builds in the same way that magic is at times.

      Anonymous

I did a ranged only run in DS2 and through most of the game surprisingly a raw heavy crossbow was doing a lot of work. I do wish they got more love though.

Don't get me wrong, they can definitely do the trick. The controls just feel incredibly awkward at times and what they can actually do besides point and shoot tends to be limited.

I get all of the controls are often dedicated to other actions, but I honest to god just wish bows controlled like in DD. Just make it a gun, frick it. Let me "aim down sights" and hop around like an idiot shooting arrows. Who cares? It really doesn't have to be this awkward stand-still experience in every game since Demon's Souls.

Spirit summons are objectively shit. One of the most boring and garbage mechanics i've seen. There is nothing interesting about them. You literally just use the OP one and that's about it.

The fact they all are gray ghosts doesn't help to feel the variety either.

If I want to kill a goblin-esque enemy in Elden Ring, I have to hit it with my weapon.

If I want to kill a goblin-esque enemy in DD, I can knock them to the floor, pick them up, and chuck them right the frick off a cliff or even at their own allies.

Combat. Having more abilities to use in melee than dodge, attack, and your ash of war, in addition to being able to climb monsters and throw people/items on top of that means that the Dragon's Dogma games have more to offer someone who enjoys playing melee combat than a Souls game.

IF Elden Ring simply made several Ash of War-tier abilities like Giant Hunt, Lion's Claw, etc. melee "spells" that a melee character could cycle through and use on demand one after another, instead of locking them to one weapon at a time, I would pick Elden Ring. Unfortunately, FromSoft thinks only casters should have more than one option in combat.

      Anonymous

Yeah, it doesn't help that the moves that give melee variety, such as the Ashes of War, require using FP. So all that interesting shit is limited unless you sacrifice valuable healing to let you heal your FP.

It sucks. I almost never used Ashes of War because I'd maybe use them 3 or 4 times, then I'm out of FP. Not to mention that, like you said, it's one Ash of War per weapon, so you're just spamming a single special move. There's very little variety unless you have multiple weapons you switch between.

You forgot crouch attacks, rolling attacks, parrying and backstabbing, and charging attacks. Also enemies in elden ring actually occasionally attack you, so you actually have to worry about things like spacing, recovery time, and the range and arc of your attacks.

        Anonymous

All of which are in a majority of action games including DD. The problem is that FromSoftware limits themselves to the basics whereas something like DD not only has all the usual (light attacks, heavy attacks, delayed attacks, jumping, etc), but give you tons of special moves to do at the cost of stamina.

Look at DD1's basic fighter vocation. It has all the usual sword and board things, and then you get to the special moves.

        >Can hit your shield to draw aggro
        >Can drive your sword down into the ground on top of a prone enemy, locking them down
        >Can swing directly above you to knock flying enemies out of the sky
        >Can dash ahead and stab
        >Can swing your sword upwards, knocking enemies into the air
        >Can do a circular spin around you
        >Can hit your shield to draw aggro
        >Can use your shield to launch allies into the air
        >Can hold up your shield and stab with a sword
        >Can slam enemies with the shield over and over

And that's one of the more vanilla vocations. So not only does DD have all the things Elden Ring has in terms of combos and moves, but it adds on way more. All of which cost stamina instead of a mana equivalent, so you can keep using them throughout a fight.

I love Elden Ring, but the combat doesn't compare to a lot of action games. It's a great RPG, but I'd never put it up against games that focus that much on combat depth.

Dragon's Dogma is not a fricking action game. The enemies are appallingly anemic and both barely attack or react to being hit. It's closer to a fricking MMO, which is to say, boring and shitty.

DD2 kills any incentive to continue exploring better than ER. It's because there are only 3 unique encounters and pieces of gear not found in shops.
If compared to its predecessors, ER does basically the same but a little more in terms of gameplay. DD2, however, cuts a lot of core stuff, including the things that made it stand out, such as pawns learning how to fight from other more experienced pawns, your actions, and their own. That's why Dragon's Dogma 2 does a much better job not looking at its past and improving or at least learning anything than Elden Ring.

Elden Ring is the overall better game but is also another formulaic souls games with no innovation.
Same old backstab animations since 2009.
Same old NPCs who like to laugh sinisterly, randomly disappear then reappear dead with an item floating above them.
Same old same old same old.

In Dragon's Dogma 2, monsters receive battle damage. You can cut off tails, breaks wings, kill one of the heads on a chimera, smash the armor off a cyclops, y'know shit that adds variables and makes a boss fun to fight more than once. In Elden Ring everything is in perfect condition until its healthbar reaches zero. Remember how much everybody loved Sif's fight? One of the only souls bosses that feels pain, apparently.
Also, the combat in Dragon's Dogma 2 is also just way more fun and feels more satisfying. It has more than one backstab animation which already puts it a step ahead of Elden Ring.
Hitting an enemy with a weapon really feels like you're fricking cleaving through some thick meat, enemies can even just straight up get tossed around if enough force is put behind an attack like nice upward swing with a two-handed hammer, or they can be pinned to a wall by an arrow. When you swing a sword through an enemy in Elden Ring it feels like cutting through cotton candy, it just clips through the enemy model and no weight is applied to their body at all, it just throws its arms up in pain and then slumps down 2 seconds later.
There's also just generally way more playstyles in Dragon's Dogma 2, and they're all fun.

    >b-b-b-but none of that matters because muh enemy variety and
You said to name things Dragon's Dogma 2 does better than Elden Ring and I did, homosexual.

man I thought I was the only one bothered by that

you see all these morons parrotting the notion that fromsoft games have this great sense of weight and impact to their combat but I've always felt the complete opposite, the feedback feels like shit and you feel like you're stabbing a pot of jam with a butterknife

    Elden Ring's cities suck
Maybe one day FS can make a game that isn't set in a dead, dilapidated world but I doubt it.
    >But Sekiro
Sekiro counts too, there's no city with neutral NPC to talk or interact with the whole country is run over with monsters and brigands.

Come talk to me when FS makes a Gran Soren or Vernworth

        >A setting is "fake socializing"

what kills Dragon's Dogma for me is all the context sensitivity
the best part of Souls games is that they have none of that
also faster more dynamic combat and build variety/RPG mechanics that are basically nonexistant in DD

        >context sensitivity
You mean the Activate/Interact button also being sprint? I've seen a few complaints on that and it's as easy as changing it in the settings to be like DD1
        >more dynamic combat
Nah, come on. DD lets you do WAY more stuff than any FROM game ever bothered

          Anonymous

no, it literally has contextual attacks like Empale
Also most of the "skills" could and should be basic movesets, and you don't have weapon swaps or more than 4 skills or spells because cycling through them is too mentally demanding, even though each of them has huge cast time anyway

            Anonymous

            dd2 also has contextual attacks

Well, a lot of stuff that was a skill got loaded into Core Skills like Tusk Toss
            >Weapon swaps
Warfarer? Anon come on. Even DD1 had weapon swapping through menus
The skill limitation I think is intentional this time, since it was 6 in 1.

They don't want you to "do everything", your party is meant to cover that. Just as you can't carry everything with you in DD2, you're meant to spread the load. Or the additional stumble/crawl/stagger/dizzied states they added where the only quick out is having a Pawn help you.
DD2 is a lot more party based and it's intentional

Warfarer can only swap 3 weapons.
In Elden Ring you can have 6 slots and 12 spells

Yes and they're all variations on the same weapon moveset and basically the same spells we've had since DS1
Show me again some Elden Ring Bow gameplay? We can compare it with Archer's base moveset

Only about everything? Really the only thing that DD2 falls behind with is some more crazy setting/areas and amount of content. Everything else is miles better.

It's honestly embarassing that after 7 games, FromSoft still has us stab at giant enemies' toes while DD2 lets us trip them, grab them, climb them, freeze them, set them on fire and do countless other things.

Seriously, a SINGLE enemy in DD2 has more variety in interactions, behavior, tactics and states than all ER enemies combined.

      Anonymous

And that's why there are so few of those enemies because designing them and making them work takes time. Still, play any proper action game and it will become apparent that souls main problem nowadays is just how simplistic player moveset is, ESPECIALLY when you see how the enemy movesets evolved with combo cancels, extensions and delays. Whenever I fight an enemy in ER I just imagine how fun it would be to use their moveset.
The only From game where the player had decent agency with their moveset and was on par with enemies' complexity was Bloodborne. Sekiro doesn't count because that game was just putting each other in block chains and the enemies STILL had more interesting ways of doing it while you just pressed one button and a skill that had a spirit charm cost.
The only excuse I could see is that souls allow for a multitude of class fantasies and that's why they have to be simple in gameplay

After DS3/ER, I genuinely think BB was only as good as it was because of JAPAN Studio's involvement
It's by far FROM's biggest innovation on the Souls formula, the most polished, and the best animated of their output

Just consider how any weapon with an ash of war that has built-in mobility in its offense like the blooy helice or bloodhound's fang is invariably considered fun by the community, or ones that change your R2 into something else. From have a decent opportunity to make something of this combat but refuse to and so the most optimal way of playing is reduced to spam.
Honestly can't wait to see the ER DLC get crushed by all the cheese builds, it's going to be a sight to behold. Or they just clock the bullshit up to eleven to mitigate those and we get more Radahn nerfs

Maybe if DD2 had DD1 gameplay it would be better, but it doesn't. The game is slow as frick and lost almost everything the previous game had that made it feel like an action game. Enemy variety sucks and most of the enemies from the original have been nerfed into being slow and stupid.
You're better off playing monster hunter if you want good gameplay. The game also lost all of the good music that original had.
    >inb4 muh exploration
All you find is wakestones, goblins, and occasionally some gear that makes the game even easier for you.

Elden Ring is literally what Dragon's Dogma 2 tried to be and failed.
There's still no hybrid playstyle/RPG mechanics, the same weapons as the original, the same classes, but for some reason they thought support magic vocations should be split in two
