These guys did some voices for the game before the Final Cut version, and they made jokes about the "gay conspiracy" at the center of the movie JFK back in 2016, including a line about the "homo-sexual underworld" said by Kevin Bacon in the movie.
Here's a clip I could find from August 2019 of them talking about it: https://youtu.be/7I5vQnoocDk?t=36m52s

I think in 2016 they get the line wrong and say "homosexual underground" as a joke at some point, IIRC. So that's where the concept comes from. Fun fact.

Harry was meant to be an Innocence, but trainwrecked his life into oblivion. That's why he let every person on earth down. That's why he can hear and see things through Shivers and Inland Empire and communicate directly with Revachol.

        Anonymous

No no no, he WAS an Innocence the whole time. an Innocence both ushers in and embodies the new age. Harry's trainwreckness was a direct result of the previous age or the age he lived in as his age begins when Revachol gets nuked. The pebbles he threw into Martinaise rippled out. Call it the collective unconscious or the zeitgeist or whatever but the world is psychically linked with the pale and all that. I don't think it's beyond reason to think that the small actions Harry made had bigger knock on effects and if he was an Innocent then they should even more so.

Climate change, literally. It's pure anti-life and its perpetuation is brought about by the masses being unwilling to band together to stop it. It's an apocalypse in slow-motion, and nobody is bothering to move out of the way, as their wills were stripped long ago.
Also Inland Empire is a picture of the world from above as described by the space images that captured the isolas sprinkled throughout the Pale.

I never fully got every piece of information on it in my playthroughs so I get to make up the rest of it in my head, but I picture it as basically a physical static. Like radio or television static crossed with our world's oceans, but rather than it being water and having mass and weight, The Pale is just sort of there. Maybe it's electrons just clashing into eachother in constant explosions forever, in a mass that grows slightly bigger on an atomic level so The Pale is graduallly spreading. Like an incredibly slow big bang. And they say the only way to travel through it is by these Airships that operate on radio-waves? Some shit like that.

Basically it's our ocean if the ocean was clouds of static, and instead of ships they use Airships. And there are a lot more continents. This explanation I've made up myself from bits and pieces is enough to satisfy me and make me think it's cool as frick

      Anonymous

Like anti-matter, but it's generated from people's minds. The more people stress over shit and really get their brains going in a negative way the pale grows. Only pure hopeful thoughts can cause the pale to shrink, but the only thing delusional enough to cause that was a brief time Harry was communist enough. Basically people are fricked unless they were to go full kumbaya, and the more fricked their world gets the faster the pale will grow in response.

Reminder that one of the most rational level-headed and likable characters in the game (Lilienne) is a fascist revolutionary
    >Reveres the sun as if it were a deity (reminiscent of traditionalist pagan beliefs commonly associated with esoteric right-wing values, is also used to portray monarchists/fascists in the DE universe (Gary the Cryptofascist has a flag on his wall with the old Revacholian suzerainty's logo, which is a sun, and your own portrait adds a sun-like insignia in a Fascist run as well), likely connected to the black sun)
    >names her skiff "The Sun"
    >wields a sword (like the in-game royalists) (also like Mussolini)
    >Shivers explicitly says she owns a pair of cavalry boots
    >her own daughter calls her a revolutionary (and yes, the definition of "revolutionary" used in DE also includes fascism, Call Me Manana calls you one if you choose fascist-leaning dialogue options)
    >she's a no-nonsense working class citizen who's skeptical of the union, critical of the drunks around her, and infuriated with the delinquents and criminals in revachol
    >titus says that the fishing village staunchly refuses to unionize, likely at the behest of Lilienne and the washerwoman
    >Lilienne's daughter hums the overworld theme, which was a tune used by the Revacholian royalist forces
    >successfully going on a date with her doesn't lead to her practically opening her legs for you, instead she sets boundaries and thanks you while considering a second bout later down the line to see if you can stick with your sobriety and piece your life back together
    >esteems her family above all else
    >immensely cooperative with the police, even with the knowledge of harry's recklessness and endangerment of multiple people, including and especially himself
    >whereas the washerwoman calls the RCM a bad omen, Lilienne has splash dialogue that says she is relieved to see the RCM
    >her outfit's color palette is the same as the revacholian suzerainty's flag (blue and gold)
    and she's cute too

Deplorable, it'd be razing the homes of honest, hard-working, exhausted people to the ground and making their lives miserable all for the sake of extra money to stack the Union's cashflow. The Union are practically Wild Pines-lite. And of course, I wouldn't want Lilienne to suffer through any more nonsense than she already has. I forge the signatures every playthrough I do, no matter my Harry's character.

I'd much rather witness a wholesale upheaval of the entire thing (alluded to with "The New" and the upcoming revolution), I feel it'd complete or at the very least elate Harry and Lilienne's fascist revolutionary spirits. Elsewise I'd like to see Harry and Lilienne settle down together in a nice house somewhere in a decent street in Jamrock. That'd be quite nice, I think.

                Anonymous

I think Harry would be an instrumental figure in the revolution, but I also simultaneously think he'd remain obscure, kind of like where he's at in-universe at the point where DE begins and ends. Making profound, long-lasting changes without becoming this massively revered figure like an Innocence. I believe he'd just live a fulfilled life with Lilienne surrounded by less decadence and perpetual misery and better, less dangerous and hostile circumstances. I think he'd be a great family man doing a fine job--whatever job that may be--, and he needn't go any further than that.

Being told it's worth it to keep staying alive when the world is trying to prove you wrong is a comforting feeling. I'm no philosophist but her words about the world not giving a shit about the human condition was calming somehow, not nihilism but more like, being a human is such a vastly different experience and to her, the mere act of remembering what happened 1 second ago is a miracle
So a lot of things we worry about shouldn't matter in comparison. This game spurred me to appreciate nature more in a weird way even if it was about politics.

Not really. I won't dismiss the socio-political sympathies of the creators and the importance of politica to the story, but Harry's politics are another thing he uses as a shield for his own behavior and trauma, especially in the caricatured extremes he carries them to

      Anonymous

My first playthrough I did the same. I went into it blind and didn't like any of the choices. Afterwards, I played the 4 quest lines. A political questline-less run only makes you miss out on things like extra money perks or more fleshed out npcs. For example the Moralist quest line ends the game if you do a certain dialogue, and if you do the opposite the game still carries on as if nothing happened, aside from Harry's internal monologue. The end chapter simply moves too fast to give a shit. i.e., Dros yelling at you stays relatively the same aside from I think calling you a pedo if you're a commie.
I wouldn't bash the 4 quests since I personally enjoyed the npcs expanded story, but you don't miss out on a lot. I'd say the only mandatory sidequest is the Cryptid one, if I was talking to a new player.
Fun fact, you can beat the game while failing to complete Titus/Klaasje/Evart/Joyce quest, just pick up the gun in the Abandoned area, and talk to the kids at the fisherman area once the game progresses to Friday, or whenever Joyce moves her boat. They tell you about the noises they hear and it leads you to the island. I think you need high Shivers & Perception though.

supposing this is real (and it might as well be, Disco's been cancelled forever)
What type of schizo dimension do these people live in? I thought there was at least one big landmass somewhere, also there's probably more undiscovered areas as revachol was relatively recent IIRC. This is actually a really cool setting, even if you're basically just a cop in fantasy vancouver

      Anonymous

      It's two forms.
      1. Basically a call back to what Disco Elysium would call their version of the 70s. Lots of synth and big ban ensembles. Lots of drugs.

      2. The game's lampshading on players that want to have a "golden ending". A "Disco" option where ALL the problems are solved and Harry get's his happy ending. It's played on because obviously in reality there's very rarely such a thing as a "golden ending".

I cannot see the appeal in this and I am thinking it's solely in the humor.

Some people said this game was "anti-nihilist" if there was, I did not see it. Instead it just made me want to kill myself. And I couldn't even relate to the protag.

It's weird, i really love Disco Elysium, mostly for its writing. I'm a somewhat avid book reader, i've read many classics and it honestly stands up even when compared to them, but i wouldn't really classify it as one of my favorite games of all time, simply because it's just not much of a game and my tastes overwhelmingly point towards "gamier" games. At the same time, so much of its narrative structure and writing only works BECAUSE it's a game. So Disco Elysium is one of my favorite... somethings. Not favorite book, not favorite game, just one of my favorite "things", i suppose.
