Ryza 3, on the hardest difficulty, is by far the easiest game in the entire series. Ryza 3 is also the only game with level scaling.
It doesn't do anything to make you less overpowered when the scaling is focused on the entirely wrong thing, all it does is make the early game a chore because every enemy has a shitload of HP and you don't have the means to make good items yet. By the time you're 1/4 through the game it completely falls apart and the scaling is no longer relevant in any way. Meanwhile other games like E&L actually have really difficult end-game bonus bosses because the combat system there isn't completely broken.

I do not think it's bad for items to be important in atelier combat though. One of the big problems I have with some of the games in the series is them severely nerfing attack items on Very Hard difficulty by causing their damage to drop by 50% with each consecutive use in the same battle. It's to the point where I literally stopped using attack items about 1/3 of the way through Firis, except the lightning bomb because it pushes back the enemy's turn.

Anon I know, I've played ryza 1 and 2, and I figured out in 2 that I could just make a uni bag which could stunlock pretty much anything. And bosses don't have anything comparable, although I wish they did. I still think level scaling in general is a beneficial mechanic, although I'm not sure how an effective scaling system would look in Atelier and I agree it's not a substitute for a well-designed underlying combat system.
I'm also not sure I think the combat in Ryza is 'bad' just because it's broken - figuring out how to break it was pretty fun in Ryza 2. But I wish it was a little harder to break as well.

It sounds like you haven't played 3 then. It's not comparable; 1 and 2 are very different games thanks to the structure and mechanics changes. Figuring out how to bend games over your knee can be fun; earlier Atelier games, Star Ocean 2, and Final Fantasy 8 are all great for that. Ryza 3 isn't, because the only thing you have to figure out is making one good bomb, which can be very easily done through various ingredient-material loops in 3 that weren't in the first two games, and then the item cost / interrupt system in 3 making items broken. With Empel's passive cost-related skills you can just spam items indefinitely with him, one after the other, with the only break in between being how fast your finger is hitting the interrupt button. It's simply not a well designed game.

3 completely removes limitation on core crystal uses in battle so you can just spam items forever, it's the most braindead combat ever in an Atelier game.
No, 3's combat is even worse because of item spam like the other guy said and also because they made enemies scale to you so they're never actually a threat but they're always HP sponges until you make good items to then OHKO everything 1ms into battle for the rest of the game.

Ryza 3, on the hardest difficulty, is by far the easiest game in the entire series. Ryza 3 is also the only game with level scaling.
It doesn't do anything to make you less overpowered when the scaling is focused on the entirely wrong thing, all it does is make the early game a chore because every enemy has a shitload of HP and you don't have the means to make good items yet. By the time you're 1/4 through the game it completely falls apart and the scaling is no longer relevant in any way. Meanwhile other games like E&L actually have really difficult end-game bonus bosses because the combat system there isn't completely broken.

Anon I know, I've played ryza 1 and 2, and I figured out in 2 that I could just make a uni bag which could stunlock pretty much anything. And bosses don't have anything comparable, although I wish they did. I still think level scaling in general is a beneficial mechanic, although I'm not sure how an effective scaling system would look in Atelier and I agree it's not a substitute for a well-designed underlying combat system.
I'm also not sure I think the combat in Ryza is 'bad' just because it's broken - figuring out how to break it was pretty fun in Ryza 2. But I wish it was a little harder to break as well.
You can chain morph weapons and armor to create broken tier gear in 2 yeah. It got removed in 3 but that game has its own way of creating game breaking shit

It sounds like you haven't played 3 then. It's not comparable; 1 and 2 are very different games thanks to the structure and mechanics changes. Figuring out how to bend games over your knee can be fun; earlier Atelier games, Star Ocean 2, and Final Fantasy 8 are all great for that. Ryza 3 isn't, because the only thing you have to figure out is making one good bomb, which can be very easily done through various ingredient-material loops in 3 that weren't in the first two games, and then the item cost / interrupt system in 3 making items broken. With Empel's passive cost-related skills you can just spam items indefinitely with him, one after the other, with the only break in between being how fast your finger is hitting the interrupt button. It's simply not a well designed game.

To begin with the combat system is inherently flawed thanks to the item cost and interrupts that allow you to just spam items forever and never even give enemies a chance to act even if you don't kill everything in one hit.
Good point, I didn't really think about that and just had a knee-jerk reaction to yet another level scaling complaint but you're right. Level scaling in the traditional fashion isn't a good fit for atelier.
I do not think it's bad for items to be important in atelier combat though. One of the big problems I have with some of the games in the series is them severely nerfing attack items on Very Hard difficulty by causing their damage to drop by 50% with each consecutive use in the same battle. It's to the point where I literally stopped using attack items about 1/3 of the way through Firis, except the lightning bomb because it pushes back the enemy's turn.
