Movie tickets are $12 and I save $2 for being a member. Video games are $70 and I pay an additional $15 a month to be a member. I am thusly entitled to the difference - at least 8.5x the frames.

Consoles will never have 60fps as the standard. No matter how powerful or cutting edge the specs are, the game devs will mostly prefer to maximize the graphic fidelity for 30fps.

Big number is the easiest thing to understand. They used to market "128-bits" despite not actually having 128-bit processors and no normalgay knowing what the term even meant. If they want to make 60fps a selling point, they can do so easily. Especially with consolegays who will defend anything marketing tells them to.

Yes, they only go to 60fps in certain genres, such as fighting.
Of course, there will be frame generation and all sorts of garbage in the future, which will make all games seem more fluid, but the input lag will still be tied to the frame rate.

      but keep coping

60 fps is the bare minimum I can deal with. I've shilled Bloodborne a lot, love that game and have completed it like 10 times at least, but after building a PC (and not even a great one, 3060ti/r7 3700x) and having most shit run 60-90fps and some 120+ I can't go back to sub 60fps.

      Anonymous

Coming from a PC gay, anything below 120 fps feels choppy. Nowadays, the money that I would have put toward a new console back in the day is going toward a new monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. I cannot believe I used to find 30-60 fps acceptable.

      This.

First souls game I ever played was Dark Souls 3 on an original Xbox One, after building a PC and playing most games including RDR2 at around 80 fps on ultra, going back to DS3 on the Xbox blew my mind. Felt like 2-3 FPS.

40fps on a 120hz/VRR tv is much smoother than 30 fps.

      Anonymous

No VRR required, if the framerate is steady. It's literally 30% faster frame updates. It should be huge. It's still a far cry from 60
but the trade off here is it is a net LOSS on a 60hz display; 40 feels like unmitigated shit Might as well frame limit to 30.
No, the better solution is for devs to stop being incompetent, reign their expectations, because 'graphics' haven't functionally been any more wowing for a solid decade, and just target (and hit) 60. Works on any display.
The moment consoles start pushing hardware beyond the box is the moment you're better off with a PC.

PS5 (don't think any Xbox games have 40fps modes) only supports VRR at above 48fps for some reason, so you would still need a 120hz display to use it, as moronic as that sounds. Not that I think most PS5 players even have a TV that supports any of that

30-40 is still slow to the eye
    40-50 is pretty smooth

ultimately it's the minimum fps that matters and microstutter/streaming/cache

if the average is over 45 and the minimum is 30 it's acceptable but if the average is closer to 60 it still feels faster

Most videogames from the NES to the PS2 ran at 60fps with some locked to a solid 30. (OoT is the only game I remember running below 30.) It wasn't until the PS3 or 4 where games went to shit, probably because the DEI hires can't code for shit.

        Anonymous

absolutely not. barely any games ran at 60 on n64 and ps1. it wasnt until Dreamcast that we began to see 60fps be commonplace. then early PS2 games ran at 60 fps but as the gen went on it went back down to 30 fps and below. the same thing repeated for the 360 era. and then for the ps4 era. and now again in the PS5 era.

its the same every time. early games run at 60 and highest avaiable resolution, especially cross platform games. then as the gen goes on the devs start going for more expensive "next gen" graphics features and framerates go down to 30 and then 20-30 and then the next gen comes
