          >it's mid-tier at best.

I'm OP and I think it's literally the ergonomically worst major controller of all time. Something is just wrong about how it makes me hold my wrists, and they hurt from using it. Only controller in my life to cause this.

Also, playstation controllers press the L2/R2 if you set them down slightly angled, this removes all of them from consideration among enthusiasts tbqh

Battery life is ass when new, it’s worse now that mine is almost 8 years old.

But man, all the first party controllers this generation have way too many problems. Joycons still have drift, forcing you to either customize, warranty, or buy a switch pro controller. PS5 controller has drift issues too but there’s been 0 acknowledgment by Sony. Xbox has the elite button problem iirc, and the controllers just feel cheap.

no thanks. we'd buy these controllers because the first party ones, like you recommended, are terrible.

that's why this market segment now exists. they created it with their garbage.

Hall effect uses magnetic sensors to determine the position of objects instead of potentiometers

what this means is that hall effect sticks are much more accurate (can draw pictures with your analog stick if you're good) and they cannot drift like normal sticks.

This is extremely old technology and there's no reason it couldn't have been in analog sticks 20 years ago (it was, in joysticks on PC)

Thank you anon, is this notable in simple gameplay? Like if I try a controller for 5 minutes will I "feel" the upgrade?

eh, with hall effect you can have much smaller dead zones, so that will be noticeable.

Sounds interesting, do you know any good controllers with this feature? I’m coming from a DS4 and would like something with the same layout, and no gimmicks or unnecessary functions.
I'd also like something which has the same level of compatibility, like how DS4Windows lets you use the controller's gyro in various emulators (not sure how that works for other controllers). Budget isn't really an issue as long as it's good quality.

          why haven't you included 8bitdo?

          it's drift-proof.
          you're welcome homosexual.

          there is one: money-grubbing israelites

er play them with MKB which is wrong**

Controller is used for all fighting, racing, basically all sports, all 3d character action, all platforming really....mkb is effective for a smaller range of games.

keyboard is good for fightan. just get a mechanical keyboard with NKRO and low travel distance switches.

you have 360 degree control of your character on mkb. you simply use your camera (so, your mouse) to aim your movement instead of stick movement. like i said, this can cause problems with a few games where you want to both track a fast-moving foe and move in certain directions at the same time, but this is very game-dependent and relies a lot on the cadence of a fight. but most are fine from what i’ve tested

the non-analog movement is an issue for games that heavily feature platforming, but most action games don’t. off the top of my head, i can recall it being a problem in assassin’s creed and yes, elden ring. but again, this is a minority of these third-person character action games

          >you simply use your camera (so, your mouse) to aim your movement instead of stick movement

            Anonymous

There are no good controllers currently, only mid-tier at best.
One of the biggest problems NO ONE mentions is deadzones (shape, inner, and outer (i.e. when the range maxes out)).
for example the shitgitech f310's analog sticks have a very short effective range (on top of other awful flaws like the inaccurate d-pad and stiff shoulder bumper buttons).

              >One of the biggest problems NO ONE mentions is deadzones (shape, inner, and outer (i.e. when the range maxes out)).

Several of the controllers I have listed in the OP graphic mention their deadzones or say zero deadzone or demonstrate that deadzone is changeable in the software.

new xbox controllers have a flaw that causes the buttons to double-press. microsoft will not acknowledge or address this because they fear a class action, i think. better to just ignore the problem and hope it goes away, which it will.

i played nioh 1 and 2 without issue on mkb. i played hogwarts legacy with mkb and it was vastly superior due to the ability to have one press hotkeys for all the spells instead of the cumbersome modifier bumper/triggers, and also the fact that you can very easily aim spells. i played monster hunter world and iceborne with BOTH mkb and controller and each control scheme had their ups and downs, mkb mainly the inability to dodge while keeping track of the monster if it got behind you, and controller mainly the vastly inferior capacity to aim very important things such as your wirebug and basically all gunner weapons are dogshit on controller. elden ring had problems partly because fromsoft is notorious for not understanding mkb controls, but i will concede controlling torrent for platforming with mkb was absolute ass because of a lack of analog movement. however, this is a very niche problem that doesn’t meaningfully affect the majority of third-person character games. i’m currently playing totk with a switch procon on pc because i’m too lazy to setup controls on ryujinx for mkb and while it’s ok, i really do not like the jank associated with the autolockon and aiming the bow with gyro. but the game was made for controllers so i will give it a pass, and the bullet time mechanic is specifically tailor-made with controller in mind so it feeld right to play within the limitations of a controller

my conclusion: it’s fine and not wrong to play these games on mkb 99% of the time

            Anonymous

just because you can doesn't mean the experience is intended that way. for games like nioh it breaks the intended game design bc you're able to turn too fast, so it's effectively cheating

              Anonymous

unless i am mistaken, the post i was replying to claimed that mkb was ‘effective’ for a smaller range of games. so we are discussing effectiveness, not whatever we believe the devs intended

            Anonymous

I almost always prefer controller over mouse + keyboard, with the exception being CRPGs and similar games with complex UIs. The problems I have with mouse+kb include:
            >no 360-degree control of your character
            >no ability to control speed depending on how far the joystick is pushed
            >no variable pressure on the trigger buttons
            >no option to lie back and feel comfy in your chair
Granted, mouse+kb allows for better shooting precision but I never play competitively so that's irrelevant for me.

i forgot to mention that i played all these games (with the exception of totk) with both controller and mkb before settling on one control scheme, so i am qualified to soeak about this. for nioh 1 and elden ring i did 1 run with each control scheme. nioh 2 i stuck with mkb because i already picked it in nioh 1. for hogwarts legacy, i played the game until the summer chapter on controller, then switched to mkb and never looked back. for monster hunter, i played through the entire games alternating between mkb and controller constantly

if you didn’t play these games with both control schemes, you are not one to talk

depends on the games also not just "third person means controller is better". it's terrible if the game has any sort of aiming or a clunky weapon wheel which you don't have to use on kb. movement can and is usually better due to moving directions with the mouse.
I also found sekiro to be much more responsive with the parries on mkb.

Its superior and more comfortable. People want to hold and feel controllers that are shaped like the xbox controller.

Playstation controllers suck wiener aren't comfortable to hold, and the only ones who cope otherwise are gyrotards or snoys.

That was ironed out with new batches. That's yesterday's news. I looked into that. They are a a primary manufacturer who can actually do that. I looked into this because I made sure to source one by mailing them directly for a later serial run. Meanwhile you have a Gamesir on that thing and that's your idea of no compromise. Yeah ok, bro. I'm going to chalk this up as a troll.

    What's a hall effect?
My old 360 controller is after God knows how many years, finally fricked. The stick doesn't hold still and moves slightly, which is a pain in the ass for some games.

All those "awesome" chinkshit controllers like the hong kong have completely garbage materials so it just becomes unusable. I fell for the 8bitdo marketing and I threw it away the same day I got it. I never though I'd have to worry about "button wobble" and them spacing the face buttons too fricking far apart.
