I have no idea. Ori will of the wisps was very well optimized and even ran at 60fps on switch. I assume they just didn‘t give a shit about performance since it‘s early access but that seems stupid

Sometimes people don't want complex moment to moment gameplay. Like who gives a frick about the tactical depth of fricking disgaea. I want to make the numbers go up and not spend half a hour per map deciding where to move my chars. PoE and co. perfectly display that people want more of the character building stuff instead of better moment to moment gameplay. Like that's going to feel fricking shit when you have shit tier equipment and have a high shave a nice day, making the fight take fricking forever. Those 2 design principles are simply at odds with each other.

The problem is that the late game of the diablo clones gets really insane with summons, speed attacks and number of enemies, I don't think the souls like gameplay fits unless you want to also swap flow of the game as well.
Dragon's Dogma and hack'n'slash games like DMC and Darksiders are better alternatives for Diablo.

Why would we agree? LMB is just the end result button you press to launch an ability, just like firing guns in FPS games. If this dev tried to rely on only 1 spell/ability in diablo games, thus never pressing any other buttons, that's on him. Sure, a better movement system separated from LMB would help, but that doesn't stop you eventually needing to click SOMETHING to launch your abilities/spells. Dude sounds like a moron or lacks the introspective nature to say to themselves, "how does this mechanic work? What is its driving force? How does it interact with its environment?" etc. yet another dev who's full of themselves and unwilling to submit to any humility in learning their craft. What a homosexual.

      Anonymous

      >LMB is just the end result button you press to launch an ability, just like firing guns in FPS games
the problem here is how purposeful each click feels.

if an FPS had a gun that hit everything around you in a 100m radius with infinite ammo, the only variables in gameplay would be how fast can you click and if you can pump your gun damage up.

instead, shot placement, fixed rates of fire, ammo scarcity, and effective range make guns unique. or at least that's what i think the dev is trying to compare it to

He is right, and many POE players think the same. Maybe not THIS slow, but POE2 looks great atleast for act 1. Slow, deliberate, combat is dangerous.

    He is completely, 100% right.
ARPGs ALWAYS turn into being a big noisy meat grinder with nothing interesting happening onscreen.
If he is making a game specifically to avoid that, then good.

I don't know why you can't have thoughtful fast-paced combat. 3d beat em ups like dmc have been doing it for years. Hades does it very well. You could strip out all of Hades' rougelite elements and the core combat would still be incredibly satisfying.

arpg players are the lowest form of life, they want to mash through content 14 hours at a time with zero neural activity. it's not conducive to standard game design, the games have to be 99.9 percent braindead garbage farming or the arpg demographic will refuse to play.

We already have what he's describing, it's called Nioh.

It literally has the itemisation and build autism of diablo with skill required. Until you are overgeared that is.

  30. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

    It can, but what for?
There's always a bunch of morons that will cry about muh skill because the only achievement they'll ever have is beating something literally desgined to be beaten, but if you're not THAT mentally deficient, you undestand that number-crunching and dodgy-rolly-stabby are simply two completely different types of appeal.
Even if you like both, why would you want a skill-based number cruncher instead of a better game focused on pure number crunching AND another better game focused on action combat? I could get it if it was still like 00s and you got 1 game for christmas and you wont get anything else for the next 3 months because of that D you got on test. But there is like a dozen indies coming out every day. In a market this saturated vastly prefer a release that knows its specific niche and does exactly that well.

because build autism is more interesting when the gameplay has more texture than just mowing down mobs by clicking on them. I think build autism can and should be brought to a lot more genres.

    But thats fundamentally wrong.
Optimal play even all the way back in D2 requires a lot of positioning, respecting of mob tags, ability swapping, and at times weapon swapping.
You can 1 button D2, but so can you in PoE and Last Epoch but you're typically gimping yourself.

      Anonymous

Except at some point it ALWAYS turns into speed demon screen clearing until you get OHK. Watch any POE league like 3 days in on "top" content creators. Seeing the POE2 gameplay like a month or so ago really piqued my interest in trying POE2 after not caring about 1 at all. Its slower, making a build seems more interesting, but however it still might turn into dogshit like 50 hours into a character.

Apparently the streamers who got to play for awhile say act 1 is like that, but then act 2 speeds up alot and you are blasting through enemies so its a hard thing to balance

        Anonymous

Sure, but you're looking at the 0.01% of the player base. They're NOT relevant and will always be the extreme outlier.
It doesn't mater what the game is, people will always get a min/maxed optimized routing and play style. Even in Dark Souls you're going to have players that can clear the game in under 3 hours. Do you balance it solely around them? Come on anon

The problem with ARPGs is that they peaked with Diablo 1-2 and then sat there for over 20 years, its like why bother with most ARPGs when people will just inevitably go right back to Diablo and dump 300 extra hours
