yes it was turn based gays wanted. they removed the soul from BG when they removed RTWP.

These anons haven’t played the game or they just REALLY suck and can’t get past an enemy for an entire day. I guess Dark Souls can take a day to beat? If you don’t like turn base combat then don’t play it lmao. No need to make up shit. I assume it’s mostly the kids on this board that are so against turn base combat. I’m not a fan of it, but when don’t correctly it’s very fun. Most of you probably can’t even handle paper Mario so what do I care.

It has it's issues, but I'm enjoying the adaptation in BG3. It's a bit sparse with class features and unique skills for a video game, but it's still fun.

              Anonymous

I mean in general, its not a BG3 problem specifically. It's a problem with BG1 and 2, and a problem with Pathfinder and KOTOR and Neverwinter as well.

I'll never understand why developers continue to use these absolute shit systems that just do not translate well at all. They were designed from the ground up specifically so that a human could roll dice, deal entirely in integers, and do basically zero math, and there's major mechanical sacrifices that go into that. It's night and day just how much better other systems are if you compare DnD 3.5e or 5e to something like Pillars, Divinity (made by the same damn company in this case), or even Dragon Age Origins. Sadly all those games have shit story and adventure, which is the main draw of RPGs to begin with.

They're refined for 5 dudes to sit around the table and roll dice, not computer games. Also even at that, DnD is far from perfect. It just has good marketing and it's old.

Apparently not, if you are playing a game with such shitty combat that one single bad RNG roll can truly decide a 30 minute encounter, and yet are doing weird ass mental gymnastics to convince yourself that it's somehow not acceptable to quicksave all over the place to prevent that.

        >"If RNG wastes 30 minutes of my life its fine, but if it only wastes 5 minutes of my life that's cheating!!!"

I mean that's the same for most strategy games. If you overly invest into one unit to carry then that unique gets blasted on a 5% chance then yeah a bad player will have to reroll

A lot of strat games are like that.
One bad battle in EU4 can destroy several hours of campaign.

            Anonymous

I've never played one like that, never played EU4 either so I can't speak to it. Every strategy game I have played, the RNG plays such a small role that having it cause you serious problems is monkeys-on-typewriters-producing-Shakespeare levels of unlikely. From what you are describing though, that's objectively bad design and no one should feel bad about quicksaving before each roll in that case.

Idk where you are buddy but not a single combat encounter has lasted more than 5 minutes for me for the most part. The longest has been the fight at the grove I wanted to do, or fighting the entire goblin town that aggro'd after I'd done it when I teleported back.
They probably last 5 minutes on average for more annoying ones with unfavourable positions you can't sneak into good starting spots, like the hag or the fight before the hag, but others where you can are significantly faster.

          Anonymous

You can sneak into a good spot with the hag and sneak attack her and then just gangbang her to death quickly. If you fight her in the lair with the cage at least.

            Anonymous

I just fought her fair, it was fine, little bit annoying because hit chances in 5e and thus this game are moronic and I was like level 3 when I done it so pre-stat point to increase it. And everytime you debuff her to keep track of the real one your concentration gets broken, concentration is another dogshit mechanic in 5e, such a terrible ruleset. Makes like 70% of all spells useless because you would never waste your concentration on them over a better one, and landing some 50% debuff to get it immediately removed anyway at the cost of a spell slot is just pointless.

Yeah she was the last thing I did in act 1 so I was level 5. So I just fireballed and whacked her to death in one round.

They can be pretty fricking long. I don’t get how they’ve made a game even slower than original sin 2 but they did it. BG3 doesn’t have as many fights as other RPGs which is a good thing in this case.

For shitters. The game literally gives you a fighter and barb that can tear the early game apart, and an evo wiz and warlock that can tear the mid to late game apart. Gameplay option. Better disable it. It forces a 50% success/fail rate. The option helps shitters somewhat, but in truth it makes the game harder since yiur stats and build barely matter. It actively punishes you if you engage in the mechanics of 5e and try to build a good character.
Some guy ran the math in early access and the damage to the play party increased by 400% or something stupid. Definitely not worth it just to reduce the chance for a freakish streak of Nar 1s

Karmic dice makes the game harder, smoothbrain. It increases the chances to roll high exponentially. Because enemies have many more entities in almost every fight, they're always at an advantage.

This. After act 1 there is no more content. No more voice acting, no more boss fights, very few battles, only one or two side quests, no more cutscenes.
The game is a scam from Larian Studios and we need to hold them accountable.

Yeah but almost all of those are sales from the Early Access. Most of it from before they made every male companion "player sexual".

Early Access sales for BG3 is confirmed to be 2.5 million for reference.
So the Steam peak is about 1/3rd of the people who bought it in Early Access.

I may misinterpret this, but I though origin characters were companions. I assume If I start with one, I have one less companion? (Because I wouldn't have my custom character.)

      Anonymous

if you play as a origin character you can still get the rest of them on your team

      Anonymous

Better to play Origin or Dark Urge, when you play a companion character, you lose 90% of their voice lines. However, if you fricking hate a companion, playing as them not only allows you to change their personality but also removes 90% of their voice lines.

Haven't touched Dark Urge yet but I did look up a few cutscenes for it and it looks pretty great from an RP standpoint. Figured after I beat the game as an origin character I'd go back and play as a Dark Urge oath breaker paladin who desperately wants to be a good person but keeps giving in to his psychotic tendencies. The kind of psychopath who'd approach a starving urchin sitting on the curb with a puppy and offer him a bit of food and gold before swiftly snapping the puppy's neck and then apologizing profusely to the sobbing orphan and offering to buy him a new puppy

so is two weapon fighting used for anything in this game i never see anyone ever mention it in any kind of build video

      Anonymous

two-weapon fighting requires a bit more brains and not as appealing as other ways of creating your character
It can be incredibly op with the right weapon combination (hope you like carrying multiple weapons for a given situation) + the feat that allows for specialized dual-wielding is kino

        Anonymous

i want to dual wield long swords with my fighter but i dont know what i should have my stats looking like or if i should just be using finesse weapons instead

how much dex would i need for dual wielding? im sitting on like 19 strength and like maybe 14 dex right now

              Anonymous

more the better but it's specialization/weapon proficiency that influences more-so than stats itself
unlocks far more moves that you otherwise wouldn't have if you weren't proficient

also being different class can impact largely how you play with your weapons

              Anonymous

You're thinking too hard about it.
The reason why more people dont use dual wield builds is because it's harder on an actual management level. You can get a dual wielding companion in Act 2 and it is painfully easy to forget to use all her actions.
It's the actions, not the stats

              Anonymous

You don't need dex, you still use strength for melee attack rolls, you only use dex if it's higher and the weapon is a finesse weapon afaik. You could have 8 dex and still be fine

Fighter (2) Assassin Rogue (10) with Dark Urge origin for the invis cape, lets you utterly dominate the game while being practically invincible because you're hard invis every turn and most enemies don't have the skill checks necessary to spot you.

monk is okay. open fist monk is okay even more.

but my monk have some defence problems. i went full STR, get 16 wisdom, and like 10 dexterity. and now i have like 12-13 armor, and i don't know how to get more armor. there should be some magic shield spell but i have no one to cast it.

but my monk has very good dps, with brawler tavern i have lots of accuracy and damage, 2 attack per turn+bonus attack palm strike, that hits twice+elemental bonuses, +lightning charges, +debuff like topple or stagger.

monk AC is wisdom. i dont know if it has a cap, but 13 armor doesnt seem like much.

i was actually doing some theorycrafting for a barbarian monk that went str instead of dex. i havent tested it yet but im curious how it works with 2 different versions of unarmored defense. i refuse to believe they stack but im holding out hope.

                Anonymous

monk AC is not wisdom, it is actually WIS+DEX, so when you have wis+dex monk you have like 16-17 AC. but with STR+WIS monk you have 13.

                Anonymous

Monk's is dex + wisdom while Barbarian's is dex + con. The game will take whichever is higher I think, but won't stack. They also won't stack with mage armor. If you went Barbarian with 16 con and 14 dex you're at 15 AC. There's a pair of gloves in the early game that adds +2 to AC if you're unarmored. I know it works with sorc's unarmored dragon AC, so it should work here too giving you 17 AC. Strength monk probably should just wear medium or heavy armor. Medium armor and 14 dex puts you at the same 17AC while opening up a lot of gear options, and going Fighter/Paladin/Ranger for heavy armor could land you at 19 AC after the +1 from fighting style while wearing a shield. Actually, wear a shield so you're at 19 and 21 respectively.

Monk wearing armor only strips away the passive that gives you extra movement speed. Which is a sacrifice, but you're gaining a ton of tankiness in turn. There are other ways to gain mobility.

Too many people are basing monk opinions off of the TTRPG when Larian explicitly said they were buffing the shit out of them, and they did. The ki system doesn't kneecap anything because monks are just melee wizards with too many ways to regen spell slots now.

Act 2 is about 20-25 hrs.

Act 3 cannot say, looks like 20-30 but could also be just 15. Baldurs gate is massive, like, massive, massive. Not that you'll be getting into the city right away though. There's a solid 3.6 hrs of gameplay just to get into the city after you finished act 2

        Anonymous

Of the game itself? Honestly, an easy 8/10. I'm going to replay the game with an origin character next, but I'm not settled on who as of yet. I kind of want to do an Astarion run because of his Act 3 personal quest. Though Shadowheart isn't a bad choice either. I will definitely be going with the Dark Urge for my 3rd run of the game.

I didn't really expect the game to have such beautiful visuals, there's lots of nice scenery in the game, textures tend to be pretty high res as well unless the game bugs out and it refuses to load them for some reason.

I'd rate it a 9/10 if only there were less bugs in the later acts. A lot of them seem to happen around long rests in camps, dialogues / cutscenes not triggering, and then suddenly you get them later on when they don't even make sense.

Also, fricking hilarious that Lae'zel starts talking about "Finally, Moonrise Towers" when I'm in the lower city of Baldur's Gate, so that was weird.

Also, love the soundtrack. Borislav is no Kiril and I don't think anyone will ever compare to his work, but he does a solid job, and there are very, very memorable tracks in the game.

is it good enough for you to play again?

Absolutely, the funny thing is I don't even have to wait to play it again, because I'm not feeling burnt out by my first run. It's become one of those games for me where I end up playing the game up to 4AM without realizing the time and not wanting to stop playing.

NTA but there's a mod that removed the limit on inspiriations you can get, which is capped at 3 in the normal game. That might be what he's talking about, not having literal infinite inspiriation.

It's just tedious in a lot of ways, and RNG likes to frick the player in the ass. I am a savescummer by nature, and I notice I'm spending more time viewing the loading screen(even though I have an ssd), rather than playing the game, because of shit ass rolls that I should have succeeded in with all the traits and stats weighing it to my advantage.

Also, the minimap is complete fricking ASS, what were they thinking? The arrow on your characters dot(indicating the direction your character is facing) is so fricking small, so with the top down view it becomes disorienting not being able to tell which direction your character is facing. The arrow doesn't line up with your camera as well, instead lining up with the character, making it more disorienting.

People say Dark Urge is the best character and the most narratively connected with BG1+2. However the devs recommend not playing Durge for your first playthrough.

I've heard Lae'zel having an interesting arc despite her being an absolute c**t when you first meet her.

          Anonymous

          >Good
A lot more combat since I had to wipe out most of the Goblin camp. Several unconventional fights as well. Story plays pretty generic but there's some interesting interactions. Honestly missed a few companions since I was dicking around a bit, might try to go back and find them.
          >Evil
Outright avoided fighting Goblins, some undergeound tunnels almost by accident which led to a fairly interesting chain of events finding a Necromancy book and a giant spider. Less combat, and I outright have just two companions, but they had hugely different reactions to the actions taken during the intro than the Good version, and I honestly felt more engaged with the story through dealing with the Evil characters. I've heard that falls off later though.
          >Third playthrough
Mostly good leaning again but this time exploring more and trying to get more companions. Ended up finding entire other places just off the beaten path and dialogue I completely missed on the original playthrough.
I've heard Dark Urge is an experience in itself but I was going to hold off on that.

i feel like i spend way too much time doing inventory management. if only they would allow for an automatic toggle to sell items that have no purpose when going to trader. having to click each item (or group and then figure out which groups to shift click and mark) is so fricking annoying.

whole inventory in general is just absolute aids. it feels like it encourages you not to loot everything you see. i hope for a mod where when i open a chest and it's nothing but wares shit, there's a button i can press that automatically marks it for me.

I just got to ACT 3 on my lawful good paladin playthrough but frick man do I hate all my companions. They're all so awfully written and all of the "good" characters are such dumb homosexuals it's incredible. The only interesting characters are all on the evil side.

          >don't forget that all the companions drop the ball the moment you enter act 3 and their writing is up.

But is their writing really up? Their storyline seems to continue into act 3.
          Astarion
          >Wants to kill his vampire master and take his power.
          Shadowheart (Good "truth" route)
          >Wants to rescue her parents
          Gale
          >His magic cancer ball and mission to blow himself up
          Lae'zel
          >The whole shit with the githyanki prince
          Wyll
          >The shit with his father and his devil b***h patron
          Karlach
          >Her infernal engine shit and the necromancer main villain

The only companion whos writing seems to be up is the Druid master. I didn't even know the drow b***h could be a companion since I walked into the goblin camp and killed everyone immediately.

Literally this. Dark Urge, Astarion and Drow Gf, Lae'zel. Kill everyone else except Gale and Shadowheart for story reasons, but banish them to the camp dimension for all eternity.

I just arrived in Act 3 too and I honestly want to start over. Started as a Paladin, free the goblin, oathbroken, reloaded, switched to sorcerer, kind of fun but I played as a neutral character (not on purpose, I just wasn't an butthole on purpose at all times) and fricking hated it.

multi class what? At least for sorcerer you can't get level 6 spells if you multi class (not that that matters with amount of scrolls).
Isn't muticlassing only good when you have a higher max level than 12?

Looking for recommendations for my restarted playthrough so tell me what I should try going for.

Does Gale even serve some great story purpose?
I know his mission from the goddess is to blow himself up like a Jihadi and you have to prevent him from doing that at the end of ACT 2 but other than that he doesn't seem that important.

What even happens if you kill Shadowheart before going through the Gauntlet of Shar and meeting Nightsong?

          Anonymous

I didn't have him in my party when that happened so I just learned about that by companion dialogue bugging out where every time I talk to him that optioned popped up: huh, you just tried to blow yourself up

I see why they only have 4 member party but the narrative feels like it's built around you having all characters around all the time.

you can kill her during the nightsong and it doesn't change a bit. I believe you read the books and figure out what you have to do for the trials and enter the pool without shar doing anything to help you or hinder you.

but yeah no idea how it would work.

not twice as long. divinity is a hundred hours itself. BG3 is not longer.

Nope, still Act 1. You only get to Act 2 when you get to the shadow frickery zone. And Act 3 is Baldur's Gate, obviously, though I have no idea if it goes further places due to not being there yet.

choose carefully. do both the mountain pass and the underdark. around half way through act 2 you won't be able to go back.

so its not as long as divinity 2?

OS2 is not 100 fricking hours, Nameless Isle and Arx are very short. If I put a number on my first playthrough, it probably was close to 60. My first early access playthrough in BG3 was when they added grymforge and it was 35 hours to do what at the time was still not all of act 1.

            Anonymous

I'm 40 hrs into bg3 and at the beginning of act 3. bg3 is not that long. it's that long when you don't constantly save and have to do encounters over and over and over again.
            that's artificial length.

does it matter if you do the pass or underdark first

There's like five or six actual quests in act 1.
"Go explore that place" or "go kill that npc" are not actual quests.

The ice dragon is stuck, you gotta go 10 feet to a nearby cave and kill a witch and come back "quest" is done. Dragon doesn't show up in later acts. Its a video game, its going to boil down to someone telling you to go somewhere and you either kill something or talk something to death/sucking your wiener in fealty

but I never said OS2 wasn't inflated. I am saying they both feel very similar in length. You have a somewhat complex starting area with a lot of choices on the surface and then a very narrow and guided experience for the rest of the way.
When you're quick about it and just rush through combat then these games are short as frick.
I don't want to shill but Pillars did feel longer because you had more talking, had more exploration.

To me exploration time doesn't feel as padded and artificial as combat time. but that's just me

                Anonymous

Exploration time as in walking through mostly empty maps ala BG1. BG1 took me 22 hours blind which I thought was insanely short when people online were saying it was like double that and I did any quest I could find. It feels like the conversation is about to devolve into RTwP vs Turn based like anything Larian vs other modern CRPGs tends to do

      Anonymous

literally this. this game feels short and tedious. again, I don't want to be a shill, but fricking pillars of eternity was a better experience. I was an adventurer, I was adventuring, my choices had some impact, I thought about those choices when that impact came. In BG3 I just do and it works no matter what i do.

        >pillars of eternity was a better experience
That's not being a shill. That's just being a contrarian. PoE and Deadfire were both mediocre.

      >How the frick is the game taking people so god damn long?
Because I do 100% of the game so I don't have to touch this shit again.
I'm at the start of Act 2 and have fully explored both mountain and underdark. Larian gays don't have balls so you can cover something close to 100% in one playthrough.

Isn't Underdark just part of the first map but underground? You can freely use waypoints between them.

Apparently you can use waypoints through the entire game. I can just go back from act 2 to act 1.

        Anonymous

I did both as well, I assume act 2 counts as when you reach the shadow lands shit. I agree that it fricking sucks that you can't really lock yourself out of shit easily. However the mountain pass can be cleared in an hour even if you decide to genocide the creche after taking the mace and saying no to the inquisitor or whatever. The ghouls are a non-issue.
A good 80% of the game's experience is just waiting for your fricking enemy's turn to end.

is this a 'sequel' to BG2, like are you doing more stuff with the baalspawn and whatever or is this a "d&d game" using the name baldur's gate because that's a recognizable franchise name and an actual city

e.g. if they did a NWN3 I wouldn't expect it to have all that much to do with nwn 2, as nwn 2 didn't have all that much to do with nwn 1, and nwn 2 plot/motb kinda wrapped things up in a way it wouldn't make too much sense to continue from

do I need to brush up on what happened in bg1/2 (not like go and find and replay those games in their entirety, ) before playing bg3? I did play them, but it was a long ass time ago, I remember more of the plot of bg 1 with the whole baalspan reveal and saverock stuff, but honestly most of what I recall of bg 2 was that dlc with the wacky dungeon where you're like level 35

Anyone know if taking a single level in rogue will let my barbarian use all of his attacks as sneak attacks when he reckless attacks?
I feel like it should work considering reckless gives you advantage but I'm certain there will be some stupid limit to sneak attacks that stop you.

      Anonymous

Sneak attack can only be triggered once per round, like in normal 5e

Sneak attack only works once per round in the tabletop too?
I didn't know that. I guess i should read the rules at some point.

          Anonymous

In 5e, yeah. "Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra..."
3.5 it's on any attack that can have a precision damage rider and that satisfies the requirements.

The nautiloid, the intro, takes 10-30 minutes to get through. If we're being as generous as possible, it could take about an hour.
About 550,000 players playing BG3 now.
14 percent of that is 77,000.

And it would have been strictly better if it was. The only time rtwp has any benefit is for trash fights that you outclass and outlevel so you can just right click once and have your dudes clean it up in 10-30 seconds for you.
For every fight that you don't outclass and that matters, you're pausing constantly after every fricking spell cast, and turn based would be a strict improvement in those scenarios

There's no chance waiting 3 days to download 50 gig less is faster than just letting it run the whole time

Gur Camp. I really don't care for it much so I don't think I'll finish it.

NTA but how long is act 3? I just started it, so I've talked to Raph and shit and decided how I'm going to go forward. Aka right right at the start. I'm feeling pretty burned out though so may stop playing for a month or three soon.

    I am in Baldur's Gate.
Can confirm the game is still huge and full of side quests, I need to finish asap before I get burned out.
