getting rid of user servers was a decision made because they gave players too much freedom, official matchmaking allows the devs to railroad the players into a 50/50 winrate death spiral that is proven to keep players playing for longer but reduces overall enjoyment, it's a psychology thing

          Wrong and moronic.
Matchmaking became a thing because publishers wanted full control over the game with absolutely no dedicated server code available to any users (to prevent piracy and datamining and modding). It's a requirement for a system where servers are all elastic cloud instances.

        >skill based matchmaking
Except that the algorithmic matchmaking will keep matching you with morons on purpose to maintain engagement.
Dedicated server browsers are the only way to sustain an actual community in a game that actually exists in the game. No one playing "skill based matchmaking" considers anyone else they're playing with to be part of the same community, as far as they're concerned the only members of the community are ecelebs, esportsgays and metagays and the people they get matched with are people who are dragging them down because they're not supposed to be in this skill bracket.

        >The thing that everyone on PC wanted to the point that games started to inch backwards from strict P2P matchmaking imported from consoles and compromised with a very poor implementation of dedicated servers that were no longer completely community owned
It's always been about control for these companies. They want the power over engagement and monetization. If it had naturally died out then it would have stayed the norm after normalgay shit like MW2 hit PC.

this is a moronic take because everyone knows what they're getting into when they queue into a ranked match.
if you want to mess around you can play unranked matches or even lobbies.

Even in those scenarios you are going to be matched with people who do not consider you to be a part of the community and they're still likely to be metagays.

        This image is stupid.
Matchmaking is mainstream outside of older source engine games, because of the fact it lets the developer control the servers and have a greater influence on the game, allowing for more monetization potential.

It also makes the game get worse if the developers suddenly stop caring about it's servers, and could also just die the second the developers want to pull the plug. Which is what did happen to a lot of games, often so you have to upgrade to the newest game.

Dedicated servers, come in all sorts of flavors and really allow for each to fill a specific neich and be maintained by its owner without the direct intervention of the game's own developers.

There are numerous other problems with matchmaking such as forcing a specific playstyle and mindset, smurfing in skill based match making, queue times, requiring immediate player urgency, level systems, lack of community since most players are just randos to each other. I am just listing without being concise, but thee are some pretty big problems worth 1000 words to explain each.

It doesn't matter when match making is the only option.
Most developers make it a mutually exclusive design choice between match making and allowing community servers.

They honestly should just make a curated workshop page for sprays/decals instead of erasing them entirely.

        >Now having to pre-approve sprays on the workshop.
        Get the frick out.

Before devs even begin making their game, they have to get approved by their company and be guaranteed that their game will be profitable.
Let me just list a few for you:
            >Match making can provide players with a level system, that encourages players to keep playing, and if there is P2W or "pay 2 skip the grind" mechanics, it can encourage players to pay up.
            >Community servers can give players new content for free
            >provide balance changes not approved by the developers
            >keep players playing on the older games potentially hindering sales of the new game, making them compete with themselves.

The reason people miss dedicated servers is because they're extremely lonely people with no friends, who thought the autistic homosexuals who were in these servers 24/7 were "real" friends.
These servers basically the precursor to discord channels because everyone knew each other and had their little cringe meme cultures.

If you run into the same people frequently enough, you will make friends, eventually.
I don't know how you are supposed to argue that running into people you never met before and are unlikely to ever meet again is going to be any better at having a social experience in a game.

        No.
The flawed and broken system of algorithmic matchmaking is just incompatible with human psychology and slowly chips away at the people playing the game until their interactions with the rest of the community resemble the lowest common denominator, and in nearly every circumstance the lowest common denominators are the c**ts who gets placed on your team to ensure you have a low winrate because they are pathologically incapable of working with others.
Creating an objective bar to clear for chastisement (The report function in this case) is functionally necessary in this system or else people within the system will start exercising their chastisement drive on everyone they play with for not literally being identical clones of themselves, because the game never actually developed a sense of community in the playerbase.

99%+ of people playing dedicated servers aren't there to win, they're there to frick around with other people who like the game. Unless it's a dedicated scrim server or something, most of the time teams will even out voluntarily because skilled players would often do stuff like "Hey I bet all you guys can't stop me from taking your flag".
Online games used to be FUN.

I play Gundam Evolution (point and laugh at me) and matchmaking doesn't do jack shit to stop one-sided stomps. At least on a pub server you can scramble the teams in a lot of games, no such feature here because everyone goes back to the menu after the one game ends

      >I play Gundam Evolution (point and laugh at me)
I can't because I played it obsessively for like the first two months after it released, but dropped it specifically because matchmaking was so fricking bad. Despite the bad patches and insanely israeli battle passes those crafty japs still somehow made the most fun hero shooter in the market, and the game would have benefited immensely from having private servers and custom games and literally anything else but the monotony of constantly waiting in queue to be placed into a totally unbalanced match on the same shitty map you just did your last four matches on. I blame Bandai Namco for ignoring feedback from Western players and giving up too easily when the game wasn't immediately insanely profitable.

Human moderators, that share your ideas and kick people, who play too good compared to the rest of this server players. And "noobs only" marked servers, that are observed 24/7. With rest of the servers being "wild" without moderators at all.

You must be an extremely terrible player if one-sided stomps happen all the time, which is improbably anyway in any remotely well populated game, or even a game with only a ~100 people cap most at all times.
If it was some ancient high speed shooter, then your point has merit, but not really.
Since the game playing is supposed to increase your skill over time by, ta-da, playing it, it's not an issue.
It never was a fricking issue.
Inability to play servers with custom content that you like, with people you like, and at your own time, however, is.

The reason people miss dedicated servers is because they're extremely lonely people with no friends, who thought the autistic homosexuals who were in these servers 24/7 were "real" friends.
These servers basically the precursor to discord channels because everyone knew each other and had their little cringe meme cultures.

Matchmaking is a true test of skill.
Dedicated can be, but usually as you meet the same spergs all the time you learn their weaknesses.
Boomers simply is afraid of testing their skills because their bodies is rotting from the inside. So they prefer predictability over raw skill

Before matchmaking we just went to IRC and found skilled people to play against, but a zoomer like you probably doesn't even know what that means.

    >newbies defending matchmaking
The only reason this exists is to drive engagement (read: mtx purchases) and give publishers the control to pull the plug on the game whenever they decide it's not making enough money anymore. It has nothing to do with skill. A great player could frick you up with a sidearm that shoots dildos, but he's not actually allowed to do that because playing off the prescribed "meta" is bannable.
You are a corporate cog if you think matchmaking benefits anyone but publishers.

You need to consider that a lot of people playing videogames and even post here grew up in a matchmaking and microtransaction world. They've been conditioned to find anything else weird, even if it's better for them.

Or maybe it's that people aren't using multiplayer games as a means of pretending they have friends anymore? When you queue up for multi, you want to play the game not just use it as a backdrop for parasocials.

          Anonymous

If anything being queued with random strangers every game makes the experience even more parasocial.

          Anonymous

Except that this need is ultimately being met with eceleb shit now.
Esports and streamer gays are the people that these matchmaking focused players are now building actual parasocial relationships with.
They're still using the game (possibly by proxy) as a way to pretend they're part of that social group, they're just not doing it with the people that they play with.

    >One-sided stomps aren't fun for anyone
Some of the best memories i had was getting base raped in BF3, i'd pick anti air or javelins and would keep respawning trying a heroic defense
Same shit in TF2, when you can't even get out of the base you just pick spy or sniper and annoy the opponents as much as you can
If you care about fun winning or losing isn't an issue.
If you're forced in a 50% win ratio situation entirely dependant on what team you're given, that stops being fun, especially if you're paired with tryharders wanting to rank up or some shit

I knew a Black person who played counter strike 18 hours a day on his own dedicated server while smoking weed. Every single match he’d run to the same spot, throw a grenade, hide. Same thing every time, 18 hours a day. He’s ban anyone who killed him or figured out his routine. He lived off his obese nurse girlfriend who held him in contempt but was afraid he’d die if she kicked him out. One time she moved without telling him, but he managed to find her new place and planted himself on her couch. He had lost half of his teeth from neglect and needed oxygen for emphysema by age 40.

pretty much every big name multiplayer game uses forced 50 matchmaking to trick you into spending more money. league of legends, overwatch, ect. i wont even play these games anymore. world of warcraft is the only game i've found that doesn't use forced 50, and the pvp community is totally dead because of it. but its honest at least.
