it's cute you think the hardware matters at all. If the Switch were twice as powerful they'd just raise the level of detail 5% more and still manage to only hit 30fps. 30fps is a choice, it's not caused by system limitations, it's caused by managers deciding to prioritize bullshots over gameplay.

The Wii is barely more powerful than the Gamecube, the main difference being the upgraded RAM, but from then on you're very wrong. From Wii U vs the Xbox 360 discussions and onward, there's quite a bit of contradictory info (just Google it), but the Switch is a bit more powerful than the Wii U. It's just a bad port.

We've seen some changes to the traversing pipes and I think someone mentioend some tedious aprt of the game had been streamlined, like the triforce fishing in WW.
Overall when Nitnendo makes these remakes they usually add moron-proof things along some "hard mode" stuff or slight extra content.
Oh yeah there's an "extra" menu section now with Cocnept art and all the music from the game to listen to. That's always appreciated I guess.

If they even do voicebytes again, TTYD and to a lesser extent Super were really the only ones to do Mario's voice whereas all of the other games mainly relied on sound effects.

The ONLY way that Nintendo could have played this without pissing a good chunk of people off would have been to port the original TTYD as previously mentioned and announced a true successor to the
original games.
Unfortunately, they opted to exploit the artificial scarcity (that they created) and release a couple of (low effort, by definition) remakes as damage control for the blowback OK generated. It’s hard to see it as anything other than a greedy, insincere, half-measure. There are, undeniably, a lot of people who will be experiencing TTYD for the first time, and that’s great (aside from the higher price point attached to subjective improvements). The problem is that this doesn’t do anything to fix the ill will after two decades of neglect.

You guys realize that the FPS change actually affects the game, right? Paper Mario has a heavy emphasis on timing for attacking and defending. You have action commands during battle just like the Mario & Luigi games.
iirc reviews have said the timing is more lenient, so they probably adjusted accordingly. Changing the FPS in any game with real-time input is massive so it would've been a massive fricking blunder to not account for it here-one that I'm sure not even IntSys could've mustered.
Wouldn't 30 frames be easy mode depending on how they handle it. If the frame windows stay the same than you have double time.
Unless the timing was entirely hardcoded it shouldn't be divorced from the framerate the game is running at like that

Most Switch 60 FPS mods just remove or modifier a frame limiter.
In emulation, it's sometimes not even necessary and you just disable the VSync of the emulated Switch (and have your GPU set a frame cap instead).
Some games this works really well and greatly improves performance and input responsiveness (Unity engine stuff).
Other games it's not viable and messes up the timing (Penny's Big Breakaway as an example).
Unreal Engine games like Princess Peach Showtime are also easy to modify their FPS cap, and for the most part the game runs flawlessly except for one specific bug introduced in one scenario. The patch itself includes a workaround fix through a button combination.
Basically expect 60 FPS support for the Switch version of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door really quickly, maybe even day one. It depends on what engine the game uses.
Like nobody expected the Super Mario RPG Remake to be made in the Unity engine (but it also needs no mods what-so-ever).

Paper Mario prior to Sticker Star (and Paper Jam retconning Paper Mario as a book) was just regular, 3D mainline Mario from Mario 64, Sunshine, etc. going on RPG adventures conveyed through a 2D artstyle. It was not literally paper. After Sticker Star, everything became paper and it was made to be its universe and timeline separate from mainline Mario.

I think it worked better when we had dedicated handheld consoles. The games were catered to that format, and the hardware held up better while also being more compact.

I personally fell for a Facebook ad meme and got some GameCube looking ass joycons from a company called NYXI, however they also have more standard joycons and so far they've been great. I've had them for half a year and the only issue is that the color has faded from the sticks but nothing wrong with the hardware.

I have to wonder if this is one of those script changes that's in the Japanese version too. The translation seems to be closer to the Japanese version in a bunch of little ways already, and while we already had some autist comparing the JP GCN script to the new version yesterday, I haven't seen anyone post the JP version of the Switch scene. We know the JP script has undergone changes here and there, so if the JP version changed the flirting, it wouldn't surprise me if the English version followed suit.
I really don't think NOA is going to do anything drastic with Vivian. Mario is Nintendo's most valuable brand and identity, they really don't want headlines from Fox News saying "Super Mario Goes Woke? First Transexual Character In Mario Appears In Newest Game".

Vivian joining Mario's side after getting disowned for being male (in Japan) is a significant plot point in a big "new" story-based game. It's not really the same.

If somebody told me this was Kingdom hearts music, I'd believe them.
I used to believe TTYD was peak, but then I realized I've played PM64 countless times whereas I've only ever given TTYD a full playthrough once. Just something about the charm and sincerity of PM64 that I prefer, to say nothing of the world and dungeon design vastly mogging TTYD. PM64 dialogue can be a bit silly too but it's genuine, whereas TTYD is when the dialogue starts getting overly comedic. Battles in TTYD are better but that's about it.
PM64 is just a better game in general. Yes TTYD had better battlesystem and OCs, but PM64 looks better, has better soundtrack and has more fun chapters than TTYD.

Paper Mario prior to Sticker Star (and Paper Jam retconning Paper Mario as a book) was just regular, 3D mainline Mario from Mario 64, Sunshine, etc. going on RPG adventures conveyed through a 2D artstyle. It was not literally paper. After Sticker Star, everything became paper and it was made to be its universe and timeline separate from mainline Mario.

I don't know why people really recommend TTYD64, I played through it on the hardest difficulty and it really just felt like they added tedium to things that weren't an issue before. Worst part is the soundtrack being changed to have poor versions of TTYD music, actually ear grating for me. Having a Bow mode is sex though.

It's an opinion I have that I have never seen anyone else share exactly. But for me I really hated the pace of TOK, all of the combat takes way too long now compared to CS and while I don't like CS's combat it was at least way quicker to finish so having a another new combat system but it takes 10x longer was a huge chore and I found myself more frustrated than I was with CS.
I also feel like they over corrected on the level design, whereas CS was semi-linear with a level select and stupid goals, TOK did the opposite extreme and made maps so fricking huge multiple times where you need to ride a boot car to get around or use a boat. I also feel like they doubled down on the Toad rescuing thing which I already really disliked in Paper Jam and CS. Then there are bits like the ending being similar to CS's ending, I disliked Bobby's bullshit of him sacrificing himself and then they still do the joke of them looking all the same later, the script in general felt really spiteful honestly. I 100% Color Splash (hell, nearly 100% SS even outside of those 4 flags) but TOK I couldn't bring myself to try it. Other smaller bits are Snifit or Whiffit > Shy Guys Finish Last, I think TOK has the weakest OST so far (not even bad, just not memorable) and frick being locked out of 2 completion markers for never using accessories and never dying once without being told (why would you have a marker for not using a mechanic anyways?).
I still love SSS, I think it's very understandable for people to prefer it but for me I just found PiT way more engaging with it's story and stakes, alongside the "bleakness" it has a touch of, I also don't like how you can beat a lot of bosses in SSS in one or two turns.

Only Cackletta's Soul felt balanced to me in how long it was (especially since Bowletta really does go down in 1 turn). I hear people say PiT had long fights and felt like sponges but they never bothered me and I didn't even play the European version that changes that stuff. I prefer them being shorter than how long the SSS remake's can take, that Cackletta Soul fight in the remake drags on for so long.

Not him, but there's actually some platforming challenge in DL3, since enemies have a lot of patterns and you need to take care to avoid them. Animal friends are each unique sidegrades rather than straight upgrades, they all have things that are better about them, and things that are worse about them, than just Kirby. And the puzzles are typically integrated right into the level design. You also have the freedom to take any animal friend you want anywhere you please up until the very end of the game.
While I like Robobot too, it has almost no platforming challenge, since the enemies just kind of stand around waiting for you to kill them for the most part, especially in Robobot Armor sections. where you just become absurdly OP. It's almost the same thing as Super Abilities, Hyper Nova, etc. The only real intrigue it has besides spectacle and the final boss is puzzle rooms.
If I could buy the game with the diorama I'd be in the shit in heartbeat. Game looks good. You gays that tell people not to buy this shit probably spend more than $60 a month on even dumber shit that has less value

When a game can be easily ported, I fully agree. Love hearing people talk about how much “effort” is going into a remake when, in reality, nearly all remakes are low-effort, by default. They are taking an existing, proven blueprint for a game rather than creating something new, and all motivations for choosing to “remake” instead of doing a simple port are coming from the financial interest of the company.
Could have down the same with a cheaper, digital port and enjoyed it just as much. Happy your friend will experience some form of TTYD. I just wish he could have done so for less money, with a recently announced sequel to look forward to.

From Wii U vs the Xbox 360 discussions and onward, there's quite a bit of contradictory info (just Google it), but the Switch is a bit more powerful than the Wii U. It's just a bad port.

We've seen some changes to the traversing pipes and I think someone mentioend some tedious aprt of the game had been streamlined, like the triforce fishing in WW.
Overall when Nitnendo makes these remakes they usually add moron-proof things along some "hard mode" stuff or slight extra content.

The ONLY way that Nintendo could have played this without pissing a good chunk of people off would have been to port the original TTYD as previously mentioned and announced a true successor to the
original games.
Unfortunately, they opted to exploit the artificial scarcity (that they created) and release a couple of (low effort, by definition) remakes as damage control for the blowback OK generated. It’s hard to see it as anything other than a greedy, insincere, half-measure. There are, undeniably, a lot of people who will be experiencing TTYD for the first time, and that’s great (aside from the higher price point attached to subjective improvements). The problem is that this doesn’t do anything to fix the ill will after two decades of neglect.

You guys realize that the FPS change actually affects the game, right? Paper Mario has a heavy emphasis on timing for attacking and defending. You have action commands during battle just like the Mario & Luigi games.
All the reviews said they had no problem guarding. There's also a new practice mode you can partake in by talking to a Toad npc when you wanna train.
iirc reviews have said the timing is more lenient, so they probably adjusted accordingly. Changing the FPS in any game with real-time input is massive so it would've been a massive fricking blunder to not account for it here-one that I'm sure not even IntSys could've mustered.

Most Switch 60 FPS mods just remove or modifier a frame limiter.
In emulation, it's sometimes not even necessary and you just disable the VSync of the emulated Switch (and have your GPU set a frame cap instead).
Some games this works really well and greatly improves performance and input responsiveness (Unity engine stuff).
Other games it's not viable and messes up the timing (Penny's Big Breakaway as an example).
Unreal Engine games like Princess Peach Showtime are also easy to modify their FPS cap, and for the most part the game runs flawlessly except for one specific bug introduced in one scenario. The patch itself includes a workaround fix through a button combination.
Basically expect 60 FPS support for the Switch version of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door really quickly, maybe even day one. It depends on what engine the game uses.
Like nobody expected the Super Mario RPG Remake to be made in the Unity engine (but it also needs no mods what-so-ever).

There are other chapters that could use a bit of a tune up. TTYD, for how amazing it is, is not perfect.

Yes. They streamline how to switch partners so you don't have to pause anymore. And some additional shortcuts, a new training mode, the partners now have sprites for when they turn around, every character now has their own unique sound effect for their speech bubbles, and some stuff Nintendo is keeping hidden.
Just a reminder that the last Paper Mario game (TTYD, July 2004) released before the last F-Zero game (F-Zero Climax, October 2004).

I personally fell for a Facebook ad meme and got some GameCube looking ass joycons from a company called NYXI, however they also have more standard joycons and so far they've been great. Whenever Nintendo reveals a new remake or remaster and there's worthwhile new content worth mentioning, they pretty much always make it a point to advertise the new content to your fricking face plain as day in the reveal trailer so there's no mistake about what's there and what's not. Hiding it does absolutely nothing for them marketing-wise. We just recently had Super Mario RPG and while it did not add much, they did make sure to heavily advertise the new post-game fights and tease Culex 3D before release. We haven't seen ANYTHING like that for TTYD. We aren't getting anything.

You say that, but the switch is literally the only system that I play BECAUSE it's also a handheld and I can play at work. I can beat a long rpg on a matter of a week or so while PC games I can't make any real progress unless it's a weekend.
It's not hard to find joycons online that are better, more ergonomic and cheap than Nintendo's filmsy ones. Like, none of the shortcomings that the switch has as a handheld outweigh the sheer utility of the function.

I have to wonder if this is one of those script changes that's in the Japanese version too. The translation seems to be closer to the Japanese version in a bunch of little ways already, and while we already had some autist comparing the JP GCN script to the new version yesterday, I haven't seen anyone post the JP version of the Switch scene. We know the JP script has undergone changes here and there, so if the JP version changed the flirting, it wouldn't surprise me if the English version followed suit.

I used to believe TTYD was peak, but then I realized I've played PM64 countless times whereas I've only ever given TTYD a full playthrough once. Just something about the charm and sincerity of PM64 that I prefer, to say nothing of the world and dungeon design vastly mogging TTYD. PM64 dialogue can be a bit silly too but it's genuine, whereas TTYD is when the dialogue starts getting overly comedic. Battles in TTYD are better but that's about it.
PM64 is just a better game in general. Yes TTYD had better battlesystem and OCs, but PM64 looks better, has better soundtrack and has more fun chapters than TTYD.
I absolutely love the watercolor BGs of PM64 and I was always worried if they ever remade it if they would recreate them accurately. Maybe it's for the best it just got put on NSO. I don't think my heart would be able to take all the scenery being changed to blatant papercraft shit.

Paper Mario prior to Sticker Star (and Paper Jam retconning Paper Mario as a book) was just regular, 3D mainline Mario from Mario 64, Sunshine, etc. going on RPG adventures conveyed through a 2D artstyle. It was not literally paper. After Sticker Star, everything became paper and it was made to be its universe and timeline separate from mainline Mario.

As someone who's never touched a nuPaper Mario, what's the logic here?
It's an opinion I have that I have never seen anyone else share exactly. But for me I really hated the pace of TOK, all of the combat takes way too long now compared to CS and while I don't like CS's combat it was at least way quicker to finish so having a another new combat system but it takes 10x longer was a huge chore and I found myself more frustrated than I was with CS.
I also feel like they over corrected on the level design, whereas CS was semi-linear with a level select and stupid goals, TOK did the opposite extreme and made maps so fricking huge multiple times where you need to ride a boot car to get around or use a boat. I also feel like they doubled down on the Toad rescuing thing which I already really disliked in Paper Jam and CS. Then there are bits like the ending being similar to CS's ending, I disliked Bobby's bullshit of him sacrificing himself and then they still do the joke of them looking all the same later, the script in general felt really spiteful honestly. I 100% Color Splash (hell, nearly 100% SS even outside of those 4 flags) but TOK I couldn't bring myself to try it. Other smaller bits are Snifit or Whiffit > Shy Guys Finish Last, I think TOK has the weakest OST so far (not even bad, just not memorable) and frick being locked out of 2 completion markers for never using accessories and never dying once without being told (why would you have a marker for not using a mechanic anyways?).
I forgot to put Super Mario RPG between SSS and DT, sometimes it's above SSS, those 2 are really on-tier for me.

I prefer them being shorter than how long the SSS remake's can take, that Cackletta Soul fight in the remake drags on for so long.

Not him, but there's actually some platforming challenge in DL3, since enemies have a lot of patterns and you need to take care to avoid them. Animal friends are each unique sidegrades rather than straight upgrades, they all have things that are better about them, and things that are worse about them, than just Kirby. And the puzzles are typically integrated right into the level design. You also have the freedom to take any animal friend you want anywhere you please up until the very end of the game.
While I like Robobot too, it has almost no platforming challenge, since the enemies just kind of stand around waiting for you to kill them for the most part, especially in Robobot Armor sections. where you just become absurdly OP. It's almost the same thing as Super Abilities, Hyper Nova, etc. The only real intrigue it has besides spectacle and the final boss is puzzle rooms.

When a game can be easily ported, I fully agree. Love hearing people talk about how much “effort” is going into a remake when, in reality, nearly all remakes are low-effort, by default. Also, naming the game "Paper Mario" and making a series out of it is where it all went wrong. PM64 should have just been SMRPG2 with a unique aesthetic, they went way too meta with all the paper shit afterwards and it makes the series suffer as a result. Bring back Mario RPGs, end Paper Mario.

Why does it only run at 30 FPS?
Lighting takes priority over framerate in most games it seems.
I actually like how the remake is coming out but the backgrounds or lack of in this case has been bothering me a lot, they really needed to go back and recreate the old backgrounds better alongside giving more things those halftone dots the game used to have way more of. It's especially confusing since some things do still have it prominently like the key art.
