Around 2005-2006 when it was strictly a niche Japanese culture blog, it was pretty okay then. The really old guard, while homosexualy leftists, at least talked about Japan like it was an actual place instead of the sewer which pumps out e-girl sex games and that's why we should be more racist to Japs.

I don't remember his name... not Schrier but the other old as frick one who was there forever - he actually wrote clean, informative articles about different places to visit in Japan. I think he got caught up in a sex pest finger pointing drama though.

For those of you unaware, Patricia Hernandez was a terrible writer who worked for Kotaku. Wrote so many terrible gaming articles and shat on games because they lacked a feminist vibe. She was the OG SJW for the time, and her articles were always super political and bullshit and terribly written.

She never focused on the game or its features, more about how it was missing x minority or that the women were sexualized, etc. Glad she's gone, she was a terrible writer and was the main cause of making gaming so political.

Wasn’t kotaku the publication that first shat on final fantasy 16 for not being diverse enough, and then shat all over forspoken because it wasn’t the right KIND of diverse. Sure it had black actors and characters, but it was made by white people, so it still wasn’t diverse enough.

That’s when I got really exhausted with them.

          >if you're religious - you're subhuman

She wasn't the main cause, more of a hanger on during the time when game journo outlets started pushing hard with their anti White and anti male propaganda back around 2012 when every other news sphere started doing the same. She was responsible for some seriously moronic articles though, so naturally she failed upward as many of the writers there were shuffled off during the fallout of Gamergate.

What I don't get is why sites like Kotaku and Polygon are even around at all. They don't make any money, and they don't even work as a propaganda apparatus because no one reads it.

Probably the usual: Corpo holders keeping the site up in case anyone wants to buy it, or some good'n'old money laundering.
My bet is the former because that is what they did to Lifehacker.

They're mouthpieces for certain entities to publish their views to give said views more authority. It's a really powerful move in the vidya industry because, as you might guess, Japanese devs don't read feedback directly from the consumers. They're not here browsing Ganker. They go to their translators (resetera browsers) and ask "pureasu terr me, where can i read what amerikajin thinku??" and they get directed to heaps of shit like Kotaku.

It was shit before she came on and its gonna be shit in the future. I used to actually lurk Kotaku just to get a sorta of "opposing view" on things. ya know, challenge my own perceptions. But as time went on it just devolved from socialized underground weebs who are too afraid to admit they're weebs to snarky corporate wiener suckers to uppity sociology drop outs with nothing to say other than being contrarian corporate wiener suckers in the name of owning the alt-right. Its just so fricking tiresome, I'm trying to get info on gaming shit and instead I have to go through the authors personal vendetta against their borderline schizoid delusions about the boogeyman that is the Alt-Right/Nazis. Info on an upcoming JRPG? Nope gotta read about how some dude on a message board had a profile pic that could maybe be nazi related therefore a condemnation of the whole community. Scandal involving some Bethesda/Activision/EA frickery? Nope gotta go through the editors snarky pot shots over something sexist said by someone unrelated 5 years ago. Wanna get an insight on a games development? Nope gotta read about Obama and Trump. And worst off the community moderation just devolved into "agree or get banned" so you get this echo-chamber with a moral compass as strong as wet paper.

And then GamerGate happened and my god, as someone with no dog in the fight it seemed so disingenuous how they would pivot to whatever you homosexuals would post on Ganker to cover up with how they turned their efforts into making a real journalistic community into a school lunchroom click for xanax addicted bullied losers riddled with social anxiety. But just with every other culture war shit, there's nuance and they made sure to draw the line in the sand as close to their feet as possible and demand everyone take their side else they be labelled some sort of "-ist".

So yeah, it's been dogshit. She was a product of the culture and its not like it'll change overnight.

I wrote this in the other thread but their last editor-in-chief was Stephen Totilo. Back in 2010, before becoming editor, he wrote a piece about how he'd never played the original Doom and was going to play it for the first time. TL;DR version: He managed to get lost in E1M1 and had to download a map off the internet to get through it (never mind that Doom has an in game map and this numpty didn't press Tab, how the frick do you get lost in E1M1?! It's almost a straight line) before getting killed in E1M2 and then declaring that, at long last, he'd finally played Doom.

One of the worst fricking things I've ever goddamn read. So at least Kotaku's hiring policy's consistent

Nah. Sued their parent company, Gawker, an won. Gawker did get revived a few years ago but it's a completely different team and it's basically a different site using the same brand name. Every other Gawker subsidiary (Kotaku, Jezebel, etc.) got acquired by the AV club/Onion people and unfortunately kept going, although without Gawker proper they almost all dipped in relevancy and most of those sites have been largely irrelevant for years now.

Also, I'd recommend Ryan Holiday's book on the lawsuit. It's surprisingly even-handed about everything and goes into a shit-ton of detail that you probably had no idea about even if you followed the whole case closely.

Daily reminder that people who say shit like
    >EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL
    are political extremists.
Any conversation with an extremist is pointless, a hardcore LGBT or feminist is literally no different from a nazi or an islamist terrorist.
They don't understand violence either you either kill them or isolate them in prisons, ANY ATTEMPT TO PROVE THEM WRONG IS A WASTE OF TIME. Because they have "everything figured out" and don't believe they're doing anything wrong.

Don't waste time talking to political extremists.

Because they use sophistry, like i said don't argue with these people.
If you don't have a gun ready to shoot the SJW in the forehead just avoid them.
You can't win someone for whom the entire point of life is to argue about something. It's the same with the german nazis, for them the entire point of life is constant struggle if they don't fight for their or someone else's rights or something they feel like their life is empty.

youre exactly spot on. its also why liberals and sjws in particular are obsessed with superheros.
they wanna be heros themselves, but they cant be a hero if theres no clear bad guy or problem. thats easily solved by just calling people nazis, cause thats an easy black and white situation; much easier to deal with than the grey reality

            Anonymous

They basically pick on random people look for things they dislike and then accuse the person of being a nazi, dehumanize this person and then you're basically a subhuman to them.
Since you're a subhuman in their eyes there's nothing you can do besides admitting you're subhuman and having this moronic "guilt culture" or just outright killing yourself since as we know "subhumans should live".

SJWs just look for people to discriminate against and spill their hatred at.

Well the weird thing about the whole 'Everything is Political' thing is that it's a complete misquote: It's actually 'The personal is political,' which is a thing from 2nd wave feminism in the 60s. Except that's a misquote itself: the original line was:
      >So the reason I participate in these meetings is not to solve any personal problem. One of the first things we discover in these groups is that personal problems are political problems. There are no personal solutions at this time. There is only collective action for a collective solution.
That's by Carol Hanisch, some radical liberal feminist. 'The Personal is political' was something a later editor re-titled her paper as. And feel free to disagree with that if you want, but Hanisch herself later said about it in a later piece from 2006:
      >Also, “political” was used here in the broad sense of the word as having to do with power relationships, not the narrow sense of electorial politics.

So basically anyone who says 'Everything is Political' is actually misquoting something so badly that they've ended up with an entirely different meaning.

liberals dont operate on logic and facts, they only care about emotional iq and what is popular in their echo chambers

Eh, I really don't feel like getting into a political debate right now, but my main point is that stupid, slogan nonsense like "Everything is political" is actually a misquote of a misquote that's been taken so far out of context that it's actually now got a completely different and almost opposite meaning to what it originally meant. Point being, people who say that are idiots who have no idea that they're being idiots cause they haven't actually read 2nd wave feminism, they're just repeating slogans verbatim. Don't get me started on "Punching up not down."

            Anonymous

its not a debate. you stated a fact that people are horribly misquoting something, and i added another fact that said people are in fact liberals. no right-wing person says "everything is political"

              Anonymous

True. You also made the point that:
              >they [meaning "liberals"] only care about emotional iq and what is popular in their echo chambers
My point was that the original quote is from 2nd wave, radical liberal feminism but it's been taken so far out of context by modern, internet.... whatever the frick we're calling it now (SJW? Woke?) liberals that it's now got a completely different meaning to the original radical liberal feminist version. And you can disagree with the radical liberal feminist version, but there's an actual argument there. The 'everything is political' version's just nonsense that means nothing and is only believed because everyone else says it so it must be true. Which again, echo chambers and all that like you said.

I just understand their logic, it's fricked up and warped but there is logic. No morals though and no rules or boudaries they won't cross, including murder and whatnot. Which is why arguing makes no sense.

Cheering for someone failing who, by their position does harm to our hobby actively is not somehow a violation of that. This isn't just some random gamer losing their job, this is one of those in charge of the chief publications that tried to undermine gaming because of taking offense and paint anyone who didnt' like it as pariahs.

I somehow doubt it was only one person fricking it up (ie Schreier left but clearly that didn't fix it and things only got worse) and I never remember a time it wasn't shit (or at least the shit outweighed anything decent). Gawker basically owning them and now the push for AI bullshit is not likely to lead to everything being great either. I can't see any good outcome except the site basically melting away or is trashed because it doesn't print money. The harm it, and its staff has done to gaming has been significant.

Ultimately the thing that probably bothers me the most is that last I checked, even after Kotaku decided in the past few years to be about gaming culture war related shit, they still allow their reviews to affect metacritic as a normal GAEM JURINALIST FOR SERIOUS. When Jesus Games Dot Bible marks some game down for having naughty words in it it does't affect its metascore, but somehow Kotaku/Resetera and the like can yell about microaggressions and drop points that a game character is not voiced by a person of color properly and that's allowed to stand? Its mostly because Kotaku was seen asa "serious" gaming review site but frick, that shit needs to stop.
