Thanks bro
Reloading is cringe, doom had it right.
explain the shotgun then you bulkhead
That’s not a reload gameplay wise, it’s a cool down.
it doesnt reload either, moron
recoil =/= reloading
super shotgun is the only doom weapon that reloads and that's because your firing both barrels at once.
Oh crap, I agree with a zoomer
Nah only half agree. GOW's reloading wasn't that bad
Doom doesn't have a particularly strong pretense of realism, so who gives a frick? Just for the sake of arguing, there's nothing which physically prevents the existence of a pistol which feeds from a belt which you could link up to 200 and 400 rounds.
Reloading is suitable for certain games, but can be skipped for others. Depends on what you're looking to do.
Romero's and Sandy's. Carmack didn't have all that much input on the design of the gameplay.
What's a reload if not a cooldown? Duke's pistol shoots fast, but has you stop for a real quick reload every 12th round, so that the pistol can be more useful, yet without letting it take too much from the ripper chaingun's role, which shoots faster and never needs to stop to reload.
it isn't a reload by not having a downtime at filling the shells, it just has an actuation speed and a fire rate.
by that logic 2d scrolling shooters have recharges by having fire rates, something that is moronic as shit by all of those weapons being literal blasters of destruction with no downtime.
it reloads between every shot. If it wasn't for the sprite, the starting pistol would've sunk DOOM
I thought game design was Romero's job
it was the right decision for doom, but not for every game. especially in multiplayer games where you can balance weapons around reload time and ammo consumption
He’s a computer nerd, you can’t expect him to know anything about firearms.
I really hope he got fired for that blunder
Doom is just 3d Gauntlet. Imagine if you had to manually reload your weapon in fricking Gauntlet.
>Doomguy shot the food!
/k/ reporting in
Frick yeah.
Speaking of /k/ shitposts, does anyone have that image of someone holding a revolver that has a magazine jammed into it, and the barrel has like a big heat shield on it? I remember a little caption talking about how it allows for faster firing or some shit.
I know the one you mean, because I remember when someone would make a thread with that page multiple times per day on /k/. Don't have it though.
Still a good image though.
I fricking love you. I thought I had saved this.
Having an explanation means it's realistic
You could do a full-auto revolver, as semi-automatic revolvers are a thing which exist, all you'd need to do is to design one with an auto-trip.
>map fire button to mouse wheel up and down
Done
>Bethesda gun design
>I made the magazine longer so now it's magically a fricking machine gun
I wanted to be mad at first, but this is genuinely hilarious
You know these days I wonder how much of this is Japan being noguns and how much is manga translators being nojapanese noguns just making up random shit out of the 30% of the original dialogue they could understand.
someone made a gun for Fallout 4 called the Crude Blowback which is based on concept art for a weapon that didn't make it into the game.
There's an actual gun with a cylinder that uses magazines. Forgot its name.
The Darrick I think. An auto/revolver hybrid that fired rounds you had to insert in plastic triangular tubes called "trounds" lmao
>clip
Pistols fire from magazines. They store their ammo in clips. I think you meant magazine.
Not so fast!
You should be required to pass a non-virginity test to post a thread on /vr/, then stupid shit like this wouldn't exist.
I agree
>reloading
Next you'll want to see the main character having to take toilet breaks and occasionally have something to eat or rehydrate.
>Next you'll want to see the main character having to take toilet breaks
Yes.
The MC in Duke Nukem 3D did it.
>the duke nukem in duke nukem 3d did it
Yes. The Duke Nukem 3D Duke Nukem. The Duke Nukem I Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II Duke Nukem don't piss.
Duke 3d allowed you to piss and take a shit. As I recall it even restored HP.
Redneck Rampage had a food/drink system. All health items were either food or booze, if you ate too much you started farting and couldn't sneak up on enemies, if you drank too much you got drunk and the game was harder to control. If you drank way too much, you had to stop to puke. Eating food made the alcohol meter drop and drinking dropped the food meter, so you had to keep balance.
These were both released in what, 1997?
Duke3d only pissed but he shat once in the end scene of episode 2. The alien trooper can sit on the toilet and the chaingunner can shit in the open, and Duke could step in shit too.
> Character runs non-stop without getting tired and needing to rest and put the game to a complete stop
> Character needs to eat every 3-4 hours and take that time after to digest
If people thought like you, we would all be in a terrible place
Your fired.
I mean, it's the future
is he wearing a NIN shirt? based
NIN produced the 'music' for quake
AA-- AA-- AA--
I like reloading as long as the weapon either have a satisfying animation and sound (Like Serious Sam's revolvers), or the act of reloading itself is satisfying like in Hideous Destructor.
Reloads that go up and down off screen or just have a static animation of the character loading the weapon sucks.
>Reloads that go up and down off screen
Hello Goldeneye. I wish they just hadn't bothered.
>man this programmer really screwed up the textures, animations, and maps!
People like you are moronic.
That's uncalled for.
>creates game featuring anthropomorphic blue hedgehog, worms with military grade weapons, animals piloting spacecraft, etc.
Your point?
Carmeme is a literal idiot savant. People keep wanting to believe he's good at anything beyond programming games, but the truth is that he isn't. Just look at his resume, he keeps getting brought on to other projects and engaging in other ventures, but he's had zero (0) successful projects since he programmed games in the 90s.
Why do you act as if that's at all relevant to the thread?
OP was trying to make a point about Carmack's apparent ignorance of weaponry.
yeah he is definition of one trick pony
Sgt Mk IV is The Downward Spiral
Carmack is Pretty Hate Machine
Sarge is our true leader and the founder of our religion. Carmack and Romero supplied the core teachings.
What?
I mean, yeah. Playing BD today feels like how Doom felt for me growing up. This is kind of a philosophy I've begun growing into, realizing that capturing childhood gaming joy and nostalgia is less about "accurate" physical recreations of the hardware and more about finding ways to achieve the same emotional impact. "Accuracy" is a false idol, IMO. Same goes for CRT Shaders, which is why I like to tweak shaders NOT to be accurate to any given arbitrary screen, but to emphasis and pronounce the elements that stood out to me as a child, gleaming glowing magic phosphors beaming out of the screen at me.
Doom wasn't meant to be realistic. It was meant to be fun.
wether or not a game has reloading doesnt fricking matter as long the game is fun
Correct. Some of the best first person shooters of the 90s and 2000s include both games with and without reloading.
Really just depends on what you're looking to do.
>setting a value for a gun in a video game is some "programming trick"
>morons confusing reloads and recoils
I swear to fricking christ this board is more moronic than Ganker
>the shotgun cooldown is recoil not reload
poor doom guy will blow his shoulders out with the rocket launcher
