Game development is not sustainable, or at least not with console generations any more. Companies are literally only releasing 1 game over the life cycle of a system.
Imagine if you're some Sony slop studio that's planning to release your one game a generation on PS6 and the system is a huge flop that nobody bought.

This is exactly what happened to every studio except Guerilla. Which is fricking odd because Horizon just does not seem like the system seller they claim it is.
It actually is, Nintendo demonstrates this.
Sony and Microsoft simply don't have a sustainable business model, by insisting on forcing their consoles to be relatively cutting edge they make them prohibitively expensive to both produce and buy, in fact, they've been selling consoles at a loss for the last 20 years.
Nintendo has a sustainable model, by purposefully making consoles based on outdated tech they guarantee low production costs, but morons keep giving them shit for this.
Remember, Nintendo has experience with a gaming crash, they know what they're doing.
They kinda have to. If they don't make them ruinously powerful, emulation will just eat them alive. Look at the Switch, that had functioning emulators (plural) up in a month and within a year could play games better than the actual device. That's what happens when your hardware is too underpowered.
And judging by the Switch's sales numbers it appears to be completely irrelevant.

They can't brag about 8k because no one has an 8k TV, they can't brag about HDR because that tech is older the PS5 is now, and they can't talk about CPU because the power of the Cell is still vividly remembered.

Devs cared too much about graphics instead of the story and gameplay.
So the cost and production time increased, yet the quality decreased due to worse talent working on the titles.
