It's a 12% increase in resolution, that's significant just in text fidelity and screen door effect. The pancake lenses are ALSO a significant improvement. If you have a Quest 2 you sell the Quest 2 and upgrade, it's not that hard.

The problem is there's no way to insert a new ssd or expand storage with a microsd. They're price gouging for the extra storage but if you don't get it, you are permanently stuck at 128gb. Phones do the same thing by removing microsd slots they can charge more for extra storage.
I got the 64gb Quest 2 and I thought that would be enough but it filled up pretty fast, even with most of my games on pc. Like you can fill that up on beat saber mods alone. And because meta's cloud saves kind of suck, I've lost precious save files by uninstalling games to make space.

it's the cameras and processing that lead to the extra cost. the psvr is the only option for 550 dollars that does it, and that's because the gpu and cpu processing are done externally so the only extra cost is the cameras inside the headset

It is the same thing and it's not *competing* on the CPU, these XR2 processors are designed to handle different sources of inputs or do you really think your smartphone camera competes for the same CPU as the game you're playing. These chips are SPECIFICALLY designed to handle many camera feeds (up to 10).
psvr does onboard tracking like a standalone headset, it then sends that tracking data to the ps5 to process and render the game. not having to be a self-contained headset allows them to keep the price cheap, another way of looking at it is that it's a 1000 or more dollar headset like every standalone headset with eye tracking on the market due to the ps5 requirement to run it.

It's because very few people are using the WiFi 6 dongle or properly setting up their WiFi network. You probably shouldn't attempt to stream your PC to your Quest through your router that is on the other side of your house.

The quest tracking is great, the only issue with inside out tracking is controller occlusion when out of view for too long. And issue that's resolved entirely with the pro controllers. As someone who's used a wide variety of headsets there is absolutely nothing wrong with the devices, especially for what you get.
I'm not saying Inside Out isn't great, for 99.9% of people Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest Pro tracking is fine. Quest Pro of course being the best since the controllers are self tracking. I'm saying that for PC connectivity it goes: Display Port -> USB -> WiFi 6 Direct -> WiFi 6 -> Please Don't WiFi.
If you are really going to try to act like a standalone only device isn't a huge factor and appeal of the headset, you're a fricking idiot. I used my quest 2 daily on the toilet and during transit to play ps2 games and plenty of other emulated titles. I expect even better experience with the quest 3 for this. Motion controls are a gimmick. They're not what makes VR great and shoehorning it into every game simply because you can is exactly why the VR library consists exclusively of directionless tech demos outside of examples you can count on one hand.
Not every game needs manual reloading.
Not every game needs manual sword swings.
Not every game needs physical buttons you can press in VR space.
Not every game needs floating screens taped to your wrist.
Everyone managed to figure this out two decades ago with the Wii but here we are with history repeating itself.
You need to feel like a part of the world, and holding a controller to do 95% of the gameplay with the 5% being moving the head is absolutely not it. I don't need to wipe my ass in VR, but something like Into the Radius is absolutely great for being able to interact with shit, loot stuff and position it in my backpack etc and is only held back by being a indie title with no budget to get visuals or enemy animations on par with even Saints and Sinners
If I am shooting a gun in a RE VR mode, I sure as hell want manual reloading and being able to shoot and use my knife at the same time.
Not that anon, but manual loading and aiming is great but when you get shit like RE's gesture-based inventory it becomes annoying and gimmicky. And melee combat in any VR game just feels awful, like I'm fighting ghosts. So motion controls aren't always a good thing.
Gesture based is completely fine. X weapon is left shoulder, Y weapon is right shoulder. Grenade chest, ammo left waist. Not an issue at all and it adds to the gameplay by needing to actually remember and grab shit at the right time. Blade and Sorc is the only game I find melee to be atleast passable in, and its the one that has the most time spent on making that as solid as possible.
Gesture-based inventory adds to the gameplay in the same way waggle added to Twilight Princess.
I mean in RE4 VR IIRC you can hold a button which brings up a radial wheel if you want that.

Anyway when we have eyetracking some of this stuff will be aleviated for you. It will be normal to look at buttons instead of reaching for them depending on the application.

Quest 2 native res that is 18xx, the barrel distortion occurs in the physical space between the display and the lens, not internally within the display. Supersampling an 18xx display to 27xx definitely improves visual quality but is by large a compensation for a physical problem. Nothing under the sun will change that fact of life. Now i have a Quest 2 and it's mostly the same in terms of specs, but the image quality is a big step up, tbh.

I recommend VTOL VR because it's an arcade simulator hybrid with fictional wienerpits designed for the current state of VR. Big text, big controls. Last I heard you don't play it with HOTAS though, just motion controllers and rudder pedals if you have them, so be ready for that.

It's a pretty amazing experience. The control stick controls are a bit fricked imo. It's pretty unintuitive how you have to move the motion controls compared to everything else you do with that hand. Still definitely worth it. Wish my friends had VR to play with me.

Yes. You literally will have your Oculus games removed if you don't have a facebook account. You cannot use any Quest product without a facebook account.
You can make a "Meta" account that's not linked to Facebook.

Im simply above using the Facebook storefront to host all of my VR games. Even if I trusted them with that (I don't), I already have too many on Steam VR to go exclusively wireless/meta
you don't need to host or play any games on the quest itself, just virtual desktop to connect it wirelessly and use it as any old PCVR headset minus the wires
At that point I'd rather just have the wires in exchanged for higher fidelity

Can someone explain why they can't just have ultralight LCD screens on the head and then have you wear a battery backpack with all the processors and stuff? I ain't doing backflips I just want to game without a brick on my head.

VR Backpacks used to be a thing, not sure why they fell out of favor, especially that VR lenses are getting lighter than ever with pancake lenses it seems like a perfect fit.
Legitimately more of a problem of stability. Putting a 4.5 kg backpack on is way more limiting on movement than a 1.1lbs helmet that's securely strapped to your face.
If the design of the backpack was much more form fitting I'd understand, but then you have a consumer problem where one size doesn't fit all and you need more variance on the thing customers strap to themselves.
Tldr it's a consumer product issue not a technological issue
They died out the moment people realized that a lot of VR is actually enjoyable sitting down in a chair.
Then just dock the backpack when you're sitting down, it's not rocket science.
I think a lot of people could wear it like this and it would be okay to sit with (although it would be problematic for people with a large bust or gut).

And you can get a backpack and put a 10 pound weight in it and realize how uncomfortable it is. Stop trying to make your idea work. There's a better solution to your idea, it's a direct WiFi 6 connection to your computer, the tradeoffs are worth the convenience of not having a 10 pounds to lug around.
