That's funny to hear considering I did most of the important missions at night just to coom over muh reflective surfaces
I genuinely almost have no clue what daytime NC looks like, because the night version is just so much more alive; plus the place IS called NIGHT city (for unrelated reasons of course, but still)

Ye I had to install the simple flashlight mod because some of the interiors were way too fricking dark
But stuff like nightclubs and corpo buildings have the perfect amount of ambient lights that exploring them during the day would feel like a big mistake

pretty much every single RPG has a night/day cycle for 20 years now.
its a crucial and fundamental element of being an immersive RPG.

            Anonymous

CP2077 isn't an RPG and its 'immersion' is debatable. You can't even sit down on chairs outside of cutscenes.

not having a night/day cycle immidiately drops the game rating to 0/10.
doesnt matter if you think how much of an rpg cyperpunk is, if im allowed to walk around an open world, its supposed to have a nightday cycle.

Rasterization is good enough for npcs shadows and other dynamic objects and there is no point in wasting GPU time on path tracing for static scenery.
Realism does not matter as long as it looks decent enough.

        >Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition is the only one that does it the right way: exclusively ground-up ray traced lighting.
It doesn't have "exclusively ground-up ray traced lighting" though. In fact its RT implementation is much less extensive than Cyberpunk's overdrive mode. It was good for 2021 but it's definitely surpassed now.

          Anonymous

Except it does, it has no other form of lighting in the game than ray tracing

            Anonymous

You are just wrong. ME:EE is very extensively ray traced but it's not FULLY ray traced like Portal/Minecraft/CP2077 overdrive/etc. It's still a mixture of RT and raster. Go watch a DF video or something it'll confirm this.

              Anonymous

nta but nah you're incorrect, ME:EE is entirely bereft of rasterization, the only reason you can see anything is because it's being pathtraced.

Ray tracing in open world feels like a waste of time, but ray tracing in horror games is pretty much a necessity this generation.
I just finished playing the Dead Space remake and while the lighting was good, ray tracing would have made it spectacular.

Actually, I'm going to take this as an opportunity to rant about one particular thing. I was eagerly waiting to get to my favourite room in any video game ever just to see how they handled it and I was so, so, so disappointed. The "improved lighting" stripped all the character from the room. No sinister shadows being cast by the frame hanging in the middle of the room, making you constantly on edge in case you see movement. They even gutted the impact of the frame so it didn't make a violent banging on the walls, shaking the screen.
Hell, you even have to turn off the lights in the room to progress through it, completely removing the unique aspect and turning it into just another room. It's like they didn't take it into consideration at all.

Anyway, ray tracing would have improved that room. Or maybe it wouldn't, since the devs don't seem to understand horror.

hdr is a joke if you have a single backlight zone type display since it really is just crushing color depth with contrast and brightness shifting
when you have multiple backlight zones or self emissive pixels (oled, etc) then it starts to make sense

I have a mini led tv with plenty of dimming zones and it's probably the brightest TV you can buy at the moment

              Anonymous

I don't know what there is to discuss
Yes bright things look a little brighter and dark things look a little darker, you can notice the 'steps' as dark transitions to light a little more smoothly but it really, really makes no fricking difference when you're actually playing a game, at all. You'll see it when you sit there and actively toggle it on/off to see the differences but in a blind test of different scenes (not an a/b test) you haven't seen before you're not going to be able to tell when HDR is on or off. If I was buying a new display today, HDR would be one of my last priorities.
