Regardless of what people think their GOTY is

I very much doubt anyone's GOTY is gonna be Bayonetta 3.

Lets see what it's lasting legacy is:

>Vaporware that disappeared from the public years after being announced, only to turn back up with one of the ugliest trailers possible
>Gameplay that shows that Kamiya/Platinum staff are still autistically bitter about Scalebound getting canned, but putting in less effort than Astral Chain had with it's summon/puppet mechanics.
>COMPLETE downgrade in artstyle and graphical fidelity, 90% of the game is a brown/grey/navy mess that you'd expect from a PS3 game, comparing it to Bayonetta 2, you'd think 2 was the more recent one
>Viola is a terribly implemented character with ONE (1) weapon, so bad that it makes you dread ever doing a second playthrough
>Jeane relegated to repetitive minigame status in a really ugly outfit
>Speaking of minigames, SOMEHOW they managed to make worse fricking minigames than 1, and THEY REPEAT THEM THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FRICKING GAME
>HOW DID THEY DO THAT
>story is bad but thats given because its bayonetta, but its especially egregious here because Bayo comes across like an emotionless psycho instead of as a fun hero

>Music is probably some of the best in the series, and Paris Bayo/Rosa was cool.
>Weapons were ok
What an absolute mess.

          >ITT: games only you played
probably one of the best-looking games I've ever played but the actual gameplay was unusually mediocre even by modern PG standards. I don't want to believe they've "lost it" but it's not looking good for them.

It was a directorial debut for a guy whose prior credits are localization, Star Fox Guard, and multiple cancelled games. The fact that it came out so good even with pretty simple combat when some of the relative vets at Platinum couldn't match it is an achievement.

              Anonymous

I think people would have appreciated Origins' combat more if the majority of the fights were like the optional ones as they take great advantage of controlling two characters at once.

Trying to get platinum on the time trials on hard is pretty tough. Nothing like what the main series demands from you though. They could have made it pure CBT if they had you do the dancing rhythm game while fighting with Cheshire and avoiding attacks.

Sounds like you got filtered by having to control 2 characters at the same time.

              >Sounds like you got filtered by having to control 2 characters at the same time.
I wish I had. The game was way too easy and Cereza needed more abilities.

I enjoyed the controls and the map in addition to the story and the graphics. The level layout in particular deserves special mention because it actually forced me to really think hard about navigating through it. Very winding and twisting, it captures the feeling of being lost in a face forest.

The level layout is cool but implemented in the worst way possible. For the main story, getting lost is pretty much impossible since the game is always holding your hand, whereas when I tried to get some of the optional stuff, I got annoyed by how unreliable the map is and rarely bothered with it.

I liked it more than 2. The story is the worst of any game I've ever finished but the weapons/bosses are a big step up and Demon Slave is a lot of fun to experiment with despite the game showering you in Magic and not penalizing overuse in the Combo system.

You're thinking of Origins, which had a teaser in 3 but came out this year and is also a really nice game.

2 is a great game but the worst Bayonetta. It has excellent presentation and story but in terms of everything that matters in its genre it's the least-good in the trilogy, and in terms of presentation and story Origins beats it out.

Takemikazuchi is one of my favorite weapons in all of Bayo, maybe all of Platinum, and Rosa is a lot of fun to play once you get used to her but I can't pretend a game with such weak enemy balancing, mostly shallow weapon movesets that waste good designs, the worst rival fights on a mechanical level, a Magic system that tosses what made 1's work out the window, the worst overall boss lineup (outside of Alraune who I find very underrated), the worst Rodin fight, and the weakest post-game (despite having the largest post-game) isn't the weakest overall entry. At the absolute worst a 7.5/10 though, people who say it's outright bad are exaggerating.

Demon slave is worse than Umbran Climax, at least you still play as Bayo in UC. Reminded me of DMC1 and it's implementation of DT tbf.

            Anonymous

Umbran Climax and summoning the mech gets old real quickly because you are doing the same thing over and over. Demon slave is a mess because there are too many of them but at least you get a lot of variety.

              Anonymous

              >Demon slave is a mess because there are too many of them
Demon slave is a mess because you don't play as Bayonetta. Kamiya looked at V and said "yep, this is what action players wants" despite everyone hating V's playstyle. It's worse in Bayo because Demon Slave replaces UC so you have to spam DS against hp sponges and some enemies that pushes Bayo away, when V lasted for just 3 missions out of 20(or 17 since 3 of them are just boss fights) if you wanted to.

If you use Demon Slave to its full potential you're controlling Bayo more often than the demon while both are attacking in tandem. The problem is that the game is way too generous with Magic to the point where just standing there and letting them do most of the work is possible (and in some rooms encouraged). If there was some level of resource management with it then it would've been received a lot better, but the aforementioned balance combined with other uses of Magic being removed or rolled into DS means the game rarely gives you incentive to learn the mechanic in depth, at best it forces you to fight without it in some rooms or against some enemies. Umbran Climax is mostly dull in comparison; at best it's a slightly more flexible Instant Weave and at worst it enables you to mash. I like Rosa & Earrings of Ruin just because the mech is much more fun than any given UC, and I'm very happy that you can use it in 3.

DS is flawed exactly because of regenerating magic bar too. At least you need to earn UC with attacking or taunting similar to DMC1's DT and use it sparingly against tough bosses, DS is literally free and wants you to spam with clunky giants who are nowhere near as fun as to play as compared to Bayonetta, not even Butterfly is despite being almost a clone of her in terms of her moveset because she is still too slow and you have no risk of getting damaged while controlling DS if you position yourself.

                Anonymous

My exact point is that the demons are balanced in such a way that contrasts with how free Magic is; Miyata or somebody high up on the design team probably wanted all the work put into the system to always be a factor in gameplay balance be damned. If it was as stringent as 1 & 2's Magic then small bursts of commands would be the optimal usage alongside Winks and the counter. I like V, he just needed like two more things for himself to do besides move, read, and Royal Fork.

So will Nintendo still work with Platinum after this?

Bayo 3 did 1 million units within 3 months, that's faster than Astral Chain did it. Then there's 1&2 each doing over 1 million on Switch alone, and I'm sure Automata did numbers on Switch despite Nintendo lacking involvement in that. There's no reason not to when Platinum is generally a low-cost studio; Bayo 3 got delayed a long time which must've increased dev costs but I would be surprised if it didn't make profit.

Astral Chain was no slouch either. A million for a new IP in a niche genre is great.

Exactly. Bayo 3 outpacing AC's sales is a great sign, since AC was their best original IP performance since the original Bayonetta, and even Bayo 1 took a while to hit 1M sales before the Switch port on the back of years of word of mouth.

How so? There is only one way to use summons like that and those are at the end of combo finishers. Bayo stands like a pillar once you start using demon slaves and they get cancelled out if you try to move.

                Anonymous

The demon doesn't go away until it finishes its current attack, you've just got to input your commands between each demon attack while fighting yourself at the same time

        Anonymous

While story matters very little to this genre and especially to this series, it's genuinely really bad and in some places hurts the game's pacing.
        >Each alternate Bayo basically only exists to be a costume and weapon; all of them except the Egyptian one is remarkably shallow and their deaths are treated with zero gravitas. Egypt Jeanne and France Rosa are better but mostly because they get boss fights.
        >Entire series is about parenthood as a theme and Bayo & Luka's daughter is right there but they never spend a single moment as a family. Viola keeps it a secret which makes no sense, Bayo & Luka barely interact until the final act when they had such good chemistry in 1, Viola arrives late to fighting Singularity AND gets her ass beat in under a minute before being handed the family business by beating a shadow of Cereza
        >Demon Slave provided the perfect excuse for a bunch of genre swap segments; most play okay but they go way too long and are a fricking b***h to score well on without practice which is not what those should be like. The Gomorrah kaiju RPS fights are so fricking dull after the novelty wears off halfway into the first
        >Viola's Egypt stage is a massive wet fart because of its place in the story; its intro is insanely long and unskippable and the end fight is the weakest of the four Strider encounters. Viola's DT is not treated like that big of a deal and its implementation into the game is weak which kills the moment
        >Jeanne getting to do so little and being betrayed/killed by the person she spent all game retrieving is lame
        >Lukaon only makes sense after playing Origins
Bayo actually being a mom after 1&2 are about her own parents is great, I fricking wish they did more with it. Have Cereza & Luka react early on to Viola being the daughter of their alt selves since they hadn't become a couple yet, have Viola feel inferior to her alternate mothers only to prove her worth at the end (perhaps the final blow on Singularity instead of doing nothing)

People have already said it, but it came out last year.

Anyway, I still don't like Bayo 3 simply because Bayo just plays completely differently than in Bayo 1 (didn't play Bayo 2).

Bayo 1 = up close rushdown character with tons of cool wicked weaves to accompany her moveset
Bayo 3 = more of a long-distance puppet character like Zato-1 from Guilty Gear or Carl from BlazBlue

Also, yes you do raise a good point that the game looks fricking hideous and worse graphically than Bayo 1/2 (thanks so much Switch!).
And for some moronic reason, you CANNOT play as Jeanne in any of the story chapters. Why? Why can't you play through the full campaign with her? Why only in select sections like the Witch Trials?

      Anonymous

I think you have a misconception of both Zato and Demon Slave. You CAN just summon and let them do shit from a distance but the most effective (but more complex) way to do it is to weave in and out of controlling the summon and attacking yourself, in tandem. The Demon Slave input system is such that you can very quickly summon, input two attacks, and release to regain control of Bayo almost instantly while the demon will perform both of those attacks in sequence in full. You can get a lot of interesting and fun attack sequences going when you learn it, much like the most optimal Zato players know how to mix and combo you with Zato & Eddie simultaneously. The way you think of Demon Slave is actually closer to what Carl does, but it's only the case when you're really cheesing the system or using the train.

Viola isn't ugly, I personally find her hot, but ultimately you have Bayo and Jeane which are the hottest girls in gaming, reaching the top 10 polls constantly. It's a very hard bar, and it's ultimately why 3 has a lot of Bayo clones. Having another Bayo or another Jeane wasn't able to happen with someone like Viola, she would only look worse. So they went with a new direction, which ultimately was heavily punk inspired. It makes sense to clash with Bayo and Jeane being more refined in their looks. I like how she came out, and that she could have been pretty bad, but I understand why many people dislike her compared to the two main girls.

I may be able to beat Rodin eventually if I just get lucky but I doubt I'll ever be able to beat Angel Slayer.
I would put more effort into fighting Rodin if you could quickly restart the fight instead of having to go through his shop every damn time. A couple times of doing that and getting booty blasted by him in mere seconds is enough to make me just stop playing and go do something else.

Are you stupid? This is the hardest thing to do. Every weapon involves a demon masquerade and an invocation. No game ever has played like this, even in the Bayonetta series. Did you even finished the game? Are you 14 or something? Why don't you explain how Astral Chain is better? Does it look better? Has better weapons, moves, missions??

      Anonymous

All weapons feels like Scaraborough Fair maybe that's why? Bayo always had one moveset with slight differences between weapons but 3 takes it to another level. Most of the weapons feels like SF down to their combos and properties such as range, attack time, stun rate etc. Only with different animation.

So what exactly does Sega contribute to these games? Do they just get to smear their balls all over each game because they published the first one?

      Anonymous

Nothing when it comes to 2/3/Origins. They literally just give Nintendo the okay to publish Bayo games as long as they fund them, and then SEGA gets credited and probably some small cut of the revenue. Not a bad gig for doing nothing. When it comes to 1, they have control over it and port it themselves now and then, but they also need to ask Nintendo permission to have the JP dub in their ports because Nintendo funded that for the WiiU version.

Atsuko Tanaka was a perfect choice for Bayonetta.
And Wakamoto as Baldur is great.

Origins has good localization because it was done by NOE. The writing is a bit too complicated for burgers.

      Anonymous

If that's the reason the main theme is in an Irish language then good shit to NOE. Also Cereza's VA is excellent, I think given enough time she could take over as adult Bayo (Hale tried her best but it just wasn't all there).

        Anonymous

Both languages are great. I'm a giga weeb but Bayonetta is an exception that I prefer in English.
I could immediately tell the voice acting and writing was unusually high quality for English localization and then I checked the credits and saw NOA didn't do jack shit except for lending a handful of Super Mario Club playtesters.
Cereza and the Lost Demon just has too much class for the general audience.

They're more aesthetically pleasing than Singularity's boring ass theme. The only decent looking singularity enemies are the stronger iridescent variants.
Also Bayonetta did biblically accurate angels before it was cool.

One one hand it is kind of fitting that Cereza faces the forces of Heaven, Hell and Man. On the other the Singularity mooks are very visually boring.

Probably to give the series more to work with in the future. It's a bit of a shift, but I also accept that it allows them to work with more concepts rather than revealing another bigger god waiting behind the last big god. Tangentially Origins had some really great villains, and I hope Bayonetta 4 follows suit.

              Mmm, no, not really.
              Men are just into porn.
Yurigays are specifically into the idea of lesbians, usually in a non-pornagraphic sense.
Most yurigays fall into two categories:
              >AGP troony who likes to self-insert as the lesbian they wish they could be
              >Failure of a male who was bullied by other boys as a child and decided that masculinity is evil and hates both himself and all other men
The latter tend to make up the majority of yurigays on Ganker while the former make up the majority of yurigays on reddit/twitter/tumblr.
There's a reason they're literally all shippers, and as we all know, all shippers are immensely autistic.

It feels like they diverted most of their talent away from this to slave on FF16's Eikon battles and then brought some of the rejected assets over to Bayo 3.

Same kaiju shit, a lot of the same design flaws, just Bayo 3 having like 1/100th the budget of an actual AAA game.

Honestly next Bayo (if it ever happens) needs an actual AA or AAA budget. Like at least smth matching DMC5. Cuz a character action game that looks like trash just isn't going to pull numbers. It's sad that a genre that was always synonomous with cutting edge visuals dating back to the first Devil May Cry game now gets a budget more suitable for a touhou game, but that's where we are with this.

The Bayonetta 3 universe is a prequel to Kirby 64. When the Earth gets decimated in a nuclear winter one of Bayonetta and Luka's descendants (as noted by her braids, glasses, and freckles) manages to escape and create an artificial planet where some fae stragglers manage to create a functioning futuristic society built on advances made upon old fae technology.

    >story is bad but thats given because its bayonetta
I don't necessarily agree with that sentiment. Bayonetta 1 and especially 2 had decent stories. They weren't anything groundbreaking, but they were entertaining, and that's all they needed to be.
Bayonetta 3's story, on the other hand, is awful beyond words. It is legitimately so unimaginably bad. Absolutely nothing feels earned, and absolutely nothing makes sense.
The entire romance sub-plot is genuinely godawful. Cereza and Luka barely interact, and yet Cereza suddenly falls head over heels for him, and they're all lovey-dovey with each other, which doesn't make any sense to me. Cereza had great chemistry with Jeanne. Hell, their relationship was a major plot point in Bayonetta 2. Cereza literally went to hell and back to save Jeanne. Still, I find it funny that Egyptian Cereza and Jeanne had more chemistry than Cereza and Luka in the few scenes they had.

And then there's Viola. She contributed nothing to the story. She accomplished absolutely nothing. She didn't go through any character development. Really, I have no idea why she even exists, but apparently she's the protagonist of the series now, and I'm just supposed to accept that. It's complete bullshit.

There are plenty of other issues with the story. Singularity is easily one of the worst villains I've ever seen. He's evil because he's evil, and that's it. And Luka is a faerie werewolf now or whatever. Again it doesn't make any sense.

Anyhow, I could go on all day, but I think I've said enough. TL;DR Bayonetta 3's story is the worst story I've ever experienced.

Shipping blinders? I wouldn't say that. Again, Bayo 2 wasn't really subtle about it. Bayonetta literally goes to hell to save Jeanne. Hell, the game even makes a reference to Orpheus & Eurydice, aka "the ultimate love story."
Not to mention that Bayonetta 2 also confirmed that they literally live together. Simply put, Bayonetta had more romantic chemistry with Jeanne. If Bayonetta had to end up with someone, it should have been Jeanne.

          Anonymous

The hell subplot was nothing more than a excuse to have Bayo walk onto Loki, there were like two and a half hell levels and Bayo inmediately went back to Balder after saving Jeanne

And from Day 1, Luka was created to provide parallels and contrasts to Bayonetta that give them a very natural chemistry.

          >Bayonetta is the spitting image of Rosa and strives to be just like her, much like Luka is the spitting image of Antonio and strives to be like him
          >Due to timeline hopping both Bayonetta and Luka meet the other as a child and go on to have a great impact on each other
          >Bayonetta is coy and secretive, only letting her emotions show during rather intense moments, while Luka is brash and passionate, wearing his emotions on his sleeve
          >both like to put on an air of being more overtly flirtatious than they really are deep down
          >both show initial disdain at having to play caretaker to plot-relevant children, but prove to fit quite naturally into the parental role
          >both wind up on the same adventure seeking to expose the truth of their past and both of these truths are realized when Balder is properly introduced

            Anonymous

I'd boil this down to the Bayo franchise's primary theme being parenthood and Cereza/Luka constantly either being defined by their parents or placed into parental roles.

            Anonymous

            >give them a very natural chemistry
All of that only applies to Bayonetta 1. And even then, it barely counts, given that Luka is too busy monologuing about his father throughout most of the game, and Bayonetta just treats him like a pet. They don't really have any chemistry outside of like, two scenes.
Regardless, Bayonetta 2 drops that "chemistry" altogether, and 3 fails to pick it up.

I don't get what you're trying to say. As I said earlier, the game outright references the story of Oprheus and Eurydice. In fact, it is literally a retelling of said story.

Bayonetta 3 was y GOTY in 2022. It had the best and most creative weapons in the series. Swinging around like Spider-Man was fun. Turning into a choo-choo train was obviously more of a novelty, but it was still a riot. I even loved the Elevator Action Returns stages with Jeanne. The Opera fight was one of my favorite boss fights in the series.

Bayo 1 was balanced around never dropping a combo and using rapid weapon specials to pump it. You drop the combo, you fricked the PP, because it's balanced around gaining the absurd higher multipliers. 2 and 3 don't expect you to get more than like a 2x multiplier, not Bayo 1's 40-50x multipliers, so just don't get hit and you've basically aced the encounter as far as they care.

When you guys first played Bayonetta how long did it take for the gameplay to really start to sink in. I didn't start to feel like my inputs were deliberate and could frequently get witch time until at least 60-80 hours for each game.

      Anonymous

Never really figured out Witch Time with 1, just had someone tell me about Dodge Offset and proceeded to never bother with WT again.

        Anonymous

There are at least 2 main play styles in 1. Using witch time and dodge offsetting for higher difficulties when all enemies are flaming and you don't get witch time. That's the point where I start using the beads that drop bombs instead of witch time and the other one that gives you extended witch time by flicking the analog stick in the direction of the enemy though I can rarely get the timing for that and it seems like the game just gives it to me when I'm almost dead sometimes.
I've heard people describe it as needing to learn how to play an entirely different game once you get to the difficulty that requires dodge offsetting.

          Anonymous

It is, and it's limiting in how a bunch of weapons plain suck with DO so you've just always got Scarborough Fair in one of your slots, but it's way more forgiving that Witch Time.
WT timing is a ballbuster even regularly, and then when you consider the royal guard variant being even stricter, god damn do you notice how Bayo 1 enemy telegraphs aren't very good and they'll just attack whenever. Fricking Gracious and Glorious, man.

Dodge Offset requires a different approach but it's very shitter friendly and gives you big PP so I just stick to it.

        Anonymous

Witch time just comes down to memorizing enemy attack patterns. You have to be a literal autist to actually react to everything happening on screen rather than just memorization. It doesn't matter how fast your reaction speed is, because enemies like grace/glory and fearless/fairness will attack when your vision is obscured by other enemies or your own wicked weaves. They also have fairly loud audio cues but good luck focusing on one when you have a large group on your ass.

I really enjoyed it, especially the demon slave. Seriously, it's 2020+. I still don't get why the games are still doing giant enemies when the most player can do is stab their shins or toes till the health bar reach zero. Dragon's dogma/mon-hun and and B3 has shown there're better ways to deal with them.

        Anonymous

demon slave is a fun concept but I don't think it was executed well
the level design suffers to accommodate it and the camera really can't keep up
bayonetta herself also feels pretty weak, and the ranking system is incredibly strict; the game pretty much forces you to use DS since bayonetta can't kill enemies fast enough without it
it also tanks the performance, but that's the switch's fault

          Anonymous

          >the game pretty much forces you to use DS since bayonetta can't kill enemies fast enough without it
I think this is the big one. A big reason 1 is the best is that it put more emphasis on Combo than Time for ranks. 2 & 3 tighten time but make Combo easier which is very much counter-intuitive to how these games are often most fun, plus they push the player to use UC & DS in the least-interesting ways since they delete enemies and gain a lot of Combo. Just mash out full combos with the Magic move on or do a big screen clear instead of really messing around and having a lot of variety in your offense. If 3 had gotten the ranking balance down then a lot of the complaints people had about DS would've gone away. There should've been a penalty for using too many Demon attacks in a row and not attacking with Bayo, with maybe the Umbran Armor being the exception.

            Anonymous

it's especially frustrating because the weapons are really fun, but the game doesn't really let you experiment with them, in fact the game actively discourages you from doing so through its ranking system
you legitimately get punished for having fun in this game, and it's just really weird

              Anonymous

Honestly per-encounter time penalties/bonuses are generally not the best for score-chasing action games like this. A per-stage timer sure, you'll lose some points on a first run or when finding secrets but you'll get a good time just by knowing the stage and being good at the combat on replays.

                Anonymous

I dunno, it worked pretty well in B1, never had any issues with it
it just feels rather restrictive now because they built the combat system around demon slave, it has nothing to do with the ranking system itself per se

                Anonymous

DS building Combo better than Bayo can while doing so much damage was the issue. They should've built so little Combo that you'd Bronze or Stone score if you only used one or two moves from one Demon while still doing a lot of damage. If demon moves were meant to sprinkle some variety and damage while multi-tasking into offense then 3 would flow a lot better. Abusing DS becomes the easy way out while putting the focus on Cereza using the Demons as tools becomes the Pure Plat method.

                Anonymous

honestly, they should've just nerfed the magic system
they don't really need to nerf demon slave itself, maybe reduce the damage a little bit, but that's it

      Anonymous

I agree. Still, the entire franchise is kino, but 2 is the weakest in the gameplay department (which is super key on this type of games)

I still love to death 1, and 3 is fantastic. I hate Nintendo for their potato console. I'll legit buy the next console if they manage to 1080p 60fps Bayo 3.

For me it goes: 1 > 3 with Origins > 2. I would replay 1, 3 and Origins before thinking of replaying 2. Bayo 2 feels... Odd, i don't know. Like it lacks it's own identity and tries too hard to mimic things that worked in 1, but forces it and doesn't flow naturally.

But yeah anon, i agree. If your favorite Bayo is 2, then you are a casual and should go play other stuff.

Development hell, Platinum was working on other three different projects at the same time, Hashimoto left mid-development, COVID, it was also originally going to be open world, but that idea got scrapped and they restarted development, and I'm pretty sure DMC5 influenced the game in one way or another.

The prelude to the first Strider fight is excellent but it's also the only cutscene the guy who choreographed 1&2 (Yuji Shimomura) did because he was working on DMC5. Same with Bingo Morihashi who Platinum got to write Bayo 2's story but was busy on DMC5 as well.

I love that scene where Enzo is literally bawling his eyes out over his dead fricking wife and children and NOBODY even bats an eye
      Great moment right there

That was my first indication that the writing was going to be bad since the opening scenes were all pretty solid (I never cared more for Viola than the very first scene of her watching that first Bayo die). Enzo's a joke character but it's really fricking cold for Rodin, Bayo, & Jeanne to not give a shit about his dead family, and Viola not caring either when she's just recently seen her actual parents die makes no sense.

        Anonymous

        >when she's just recently seen her actual parents die
I think it's funny that Viola mocks her dead mother's accent a few scenes after she dies. She finds another Bayonetta and then she stops caring about her actual mother. Like, she watched her mother die, but that event doesn't seem to impact her at all.
The writing is just so fricking awkward throughout the entire game.

It really feels like Bayo 3 was either suppose to have tag climax or actually be two player. Almost of the concept art is multiple characters. Some areas were way larger than they needed to be even to fight kaijus. Plus just seems odd that bayo and Viola were separate for 90% of the game and Viola only has 3 missions.
