I'm pretty hyped for it. I just hope that the controls feel at least as good as JSRF. I refunded Hover as soon as I felt how floaty the controls were.

I'm not expecting it to be a huge game. I'll probably complete it a day or two after release, but if the controls are good, I'll want to 100 percent it and probably replay it. It's not like there is much competition in this genre or style.

he only did like one song

Two confirmed so far, and he's apparently got more.

According to some descriptions it sounds like Hideki composed all the music for it:
        >Team Reptile brings you Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, 1 second per second of highly advanced funkstyle. In a world from the mind of Dion Koster, where self-styled crews are equipped with personal boostpacks, new heights of graffiti are reached. Start your own cypher and dance, paint, trick, face off with the cops and stake your claim to the extrusions and cavities of a sprawling metropolis in an alternate future set to the musical brainwaves of Hideki Naganuma.

          Anonymous

Given that the demo has had licensed music, it seems like Hideki isn't composing every track, but is the "director" for the soundtrack, sort of like how JSR/JSRF had their fair share of licensed songs along with the original Hideki stuff.

            Anonymous

Ah, so he's like the soundtrack's curator.

Who has their head far enough up their own ass to write this in the description? If he was some auteur renown for innovation and decades of work behind him I could see why publishers would do this, but it's fairly obvious they are doing the trailers themselves and probably wrote that too. Holy shit.

I don't see what's wrong with giving the director/lead designer credit, especially when he's been doing the designs for every other successful Team Reptile game.

into a corner gives a speedboost
multiplier increases based on each unique corner you lean into while grinding/unique billboard you wallride/wallrun off
These can make or break the game depending on the level design
            [...]
Pretty much, although I wouldn't call the tricks not being a focus jsr's biggest flaw, or much of a flaw at all. Reptiles direction holds promise though

It's less that tricks not being a focus is a flaw with JSR and more that tricking is fricking vestigial in JSR. It requires practically no thought whatsoever beyond mash the trick button.

              >I don't see what's wrong with giving the director/lead designer credit, especially when he's been doing the designs for every other successful Team Reptile game
I'm having a hard time thinking of a title which outright copies so many aspects from another. That by itself is fine, we all want more Jsr, devs includes, but stating "it's from the mind" without any context or elaboration is shameless. Giving him credit is a given, fans have been shouting for this for decades and Reptile seemingly have nailed it, but come on. When you're so infatuated by another production you remake it outright you need to do a shout out.

                >I'm having a hard time thinking of a title which outright copies so many aspects from another
Man, I don't agree. As an art guy it's clear BRC is taking inspiration for JSR (no shit) but BRC is clearly doing its own thing. The color palette doesn't match up with either JSR or JSRF and the Architecture is largely unique from either game as well. The character designs are also unique as frick, especially in their concept art, though the general "style" in which the models are made (namely the very angular limbs) are similar, but there's only so many ways to model limbs with a low polycount.
Going off Dion's twitter and even previous games, it's also clear he's got a passion for this subject matter beyond just liking Jet Set. Dude has videos of himself popping and locking and posters he's designed for local hip-hop festivals. I think it's a fair assumption to say that he got a lot of this from his own head and arrived at a similar place to JSR simply by the virtue of being in a similar state the devs of JSR were at the time, even if he's not working in quite the same vacuum they were.

                Anonymous

Without being reductive, cell-shaded punks skating is JSR and they've remade it outright.
Why would they recruit the same composer if they weren't aiming for the same style and vibe?
The gameplay shown, the designs and pastel palette matches JSR more than any other spiritual sequel did it's own counterpart.
Surely you can't honestly think you're able to convince anyone otherwise?
They should just say thank you and go on with the presentation. You need to be up-front and honest when it's this blatant, especially since decades have passed since the originals.
Now I didn't know the main designer was that involved in the scene, he might take it for granted that everyone knows what they are doing. But a statement like that looks bad to me either way.

Decent openworld but everything else sucked. There's no point of doing main missions when all area is unlocked from the get go, despite only thing exciting about this game is finding new area to jump around. It would've been more interesting if you actually had to work to unlock new areas, but then again main mission is just reading bunch of nothingburger text and doing chores, so I guess everything being unlocked from the start may have been for the better.

Don't announce or start too early, people are gonna lose interest. Or even worse, your fanbase will reach its worst point before your game even releases (when nobody wants anything to do with it because of the fans).

      >literal copycats of retro games unashamedly.
It's not. The trailers are just kind of shit.

Here's some footage of someone playing a demo they brought to a con. [...] also details a lot of stuff wholly unique to the game.

I think what impresses me the most about this is the level of genuine thought going into making JSR's otherwise bland design more interesting
Like, JSR's main flaw is that scoring isn't fun; tricks involve just mashing the button non-stop and the bigger source of points come from time bonuses, meaning the game is essentially 100% focused on routing with tricking being a practically worthless afterthought
BRC, from the details we have, keeps JSR's focus on routing but reframes it as something that works in tandem with tricking; you can't just spam tricks in a corner for infinite (albeit with diminishing returns) points, you have to be hitting unique corners and rails to get your combo higher, and each vehicle opens up different routes to do so
The actual quality of the final game is going to hinge 110% on the quality of its level design even moreso than a JSR or THPS game, and i genuinely cannot wait to see whether or not they fricked it up or got it right

I just watched some gameplay real quick and it looks insanely slow. Also, I don't know if it's just me, but I really dislike indie games that are literal copycats of retro games unashamedly. They just straight up fricking copy a game and rename it as if they're an offbrand soda.

      >literal copycats of retro games unashamedly.
It's not. The trailers are just kind of shit.

Here's some footage of someone playing a demo they brought to a con.

      >There are four methods of movement: On Foot, BMX, Inline Skates, and Skateboard
      >On Foot is always available, and you can take one vehicle with you
      >Each movement method has unique controls/tricks and some upsides/downsides
      >On Foot can't grind, but has a slide that gives you a speedboost on paths, keeps your combo going, and lets you get under some small gaps
      >On Foot also has a special high jump
      >Skateboard can do a Natas Spin on certain objects, some of them activating switches
      >BMX and Inlines haven't had their unique shit shown
      >There are three trick buttons
      >Grinding has no balance meter, but you can lean while doing it
      >Leaning into a corner gives a speedboost
      >Combo multiplier increases based on each unique corner you lean into while grinding/unique billboard you wallride/wallrun off

also details a lot of stuff wholly unique to the game.

I was excited for this because i thought they would have realized what was shit about JSR and fixed it but they just cloned the whole thing, even the pointless graffiti shit.

              >The game looks slow as frick,
How? Genuinely, how? the demo gameplay looks as fast as THPS1 at the very least.

                Anonymous

I already said, the jumps and their moon gravity look slow as frick. They are floaty as hell and lack any sense of weight or acceleration, in effect any time he transitions to a new platform or rail the game might as well move in slow motion. The competition isn't THPS1, that's completely arbitrary its THPS 3+.

I dont think it should exactly emulate either JRS or tony hawk, ultimately it doesn't look that fun to move around, I was expecting something that looked more fluid but it feels like im watching an unreleased Dreamcast game.

                Anonymous

                >I already said, the jumps and their moon gravity look slow as frick.
They don't look slow, though. Also, the super low-grav jump is specifically only a thing with the boots.

You can see more reasonable jumps with the vehicles in this trailer. I don't know why you're equating a high/lowgrav jump with slow. The game has plenty of weight and momentum even with a lower gravity.

                Anonymous

The jumps look exactly the same regardless of the movement tool they use. The problem i have in general is there's no sense weight or a physics system, this is a problem JSR had too. Every motion feels binary, walk state, boost state, grind state, they are all static. When you grind inclined rails in tony hawk you slow down, theres slight acceleration on jumps and when getting up to speed, lots of little details that add variety and challenge to the movement system, here it just feels like an animation plays over a state machine.

Even THPS has pretty uninteresting traversal, SSX was the main competitor of that era where movement felt good, there was a granular physics system at play. If you're going to make a game like this in 2023 you have to steal lessons from good platformers as well as old ass extreme sports games.

You're so defensive and attached to the game you have never played you sound like a dev. I specifically mentioned SSX which this game is mirroring with its boost mechanic and has nothing to do with simulation. And before you say some terminally moronic shit like "this game isn't a snowboarding game" the point is that games with platforming and traversal that feel good have more going on with their physics system than JSR. This game is also different from THPS in that platforming is more important so i would expect special attention on how fun it is to move.

                >here it just feels like an animation plays over a state machine.
True, although without it you would be hard-pressed designing levels with any verticality or fantastical grinds.
Option would be a boost you'd have to manually engage to make it up inclines

Anon, the issue it seems like you're having here is that you want a simulator game rather than an arcade-y platformer/extreme sports game. That's fine if that's what you want, but that's not what you should be looking for here. The complex state machine and routing in THPS that encourages almost fighting game-like combos is the whole appeal, not some kind of weird physics system shit. Regarding the comparison to SSX, that kind of more physics-based approach really only works in the context of a downhill racing game rather than a semi-open level based approach. I know you hit the
                >inb4
on people saying that this isn't a snowboarding game, but that really is the case. The only other times I can think of someone trying a physics-based approach are the Skate series like the other guy said (which is less arcade-y by design) Airblade, which even aside from its terrible camera feels like shit because the SSX-like physics system it's trying to use in a Tony Hawk-style level design is terrible, and *maybe* Wave Break, which is total garbage where the water physics just make the game feel inconsistent, which is terrible when you're trying to figure out scoring and whatnot.

As for the platforming side of things, I'm not sure what else you could be looking for in terms of making it feel fun to move. There's directional boosts with the jetpack, on-the-fly swapping between different modes of transportation with their own benefits, and levels (hopefully, assuming they haven't fricked up what will ultimately be the lynchpin of the whole game) designed around those different movement styles.

                >you want a simulation
you're too dumb to understand what im saying so theres nothing to be gained from continuing this.

Fundamentally this isn't a fighting game its a game about stylish traversal and treating it like its a static system of binary choices completely removes what is appealing about riding a bike or platforming with a skateboard. If you put this movement system or jump in any other 3d platformer it would get shit on for feeling terrible. JSR had that same philosophy and is universally panned for feeling like shit to play, adding more options to the state machine doesn't fix what feels so wrong with jet set radios movement.

The state of this board. JSR is a fricking vibe while Tony Hawk is something normies remember playing on the console they had in middle/high school. You can draw a lot of parallels but JSR is plainly more timeless in look, appeal, controls, fricking music, and yeah, artstyle.

        no the frick it isn't
JSR is the "stickiest" game I have ever played; it's not bad but there's a really good reason THPS took off and JSR/JSRF didn't. THPS absolutely mogged the frick out of EVERYTHING in terms of tight controls and absolutely sublime player expression through the god tier combo system that only got better with THPS2. there's a reason tony hawk himself went from being popular among skaters to popular among FRICKING EVERYONE when THPS hit

That's rich coming from Jet Set fans to say anything controls bad. Because Underground still indeed plays miles better. It allowed for more versatility in combos with the ability to get off your board in general, even American Wasteland mogs Jet Set. The only point of where Neversoft ever fell off their streak was in 7th gen. In regards to making arcadey feeling skaters they knocked down all of the competition and had a very long winning streak. Sega made 2 games of questionable quality that were carried by aesthetic and presentation rather than deep gameplay that was easy to play but hard to master.

JSRF is the game I initially got with my Xbox in a bundle disk with GT 2002.
        >Jsr had better levels, controls and challenges
Oh no, I meant because its a sandbox game (in a time when Sandbox games were brand new and far and few in inbetween) where you can absorb the world as a whole and not be tied down to a moronic ass timer in a small boxed in level.
JSR in general has always played awkwardly regardless of game, even back in 2000-2002 compared to others. What stands out for the franchise and is the osmosis of it is the immersive world and banger soundtrack.
Though I do find how you say "poser" thats cute, you act as if this franchise's pool of people who actually played it is wide and broad or that people want to actively fit into this aging albeit autistic fanbase.

          >JSR in general has always played awkwardly regardless of game,
JSR is tight control-wise. Some parts of the levels does become awkward if you fail a line and loose your speed, but that's true for the whole genre
          >you act as if this franchise's pool of people who actually played it is wide and broad
No, the opposite, aka hipsters. Only reason people played at the time was the pack-in version. Although you seem less like one now
          >or that people want to actively fit into this aging albeit autistic fanbase

            >It's an old game and you're on Ganker lol
Correct, I am Ganker. But the OP asked why there was no hype and it's obvious why there isn't and its because the franchise fanbase is significantly smaller than what they perceive.

not sure, but Hideki Naganuma is apparently in charge of curating music + writing the original tunes so I fully expect the soundtrack to be a banger - pretty much the only reason I'm excited at all for this game

No one actually cares about Jet Set Radio. It's like Earthbound or Simpsons Hit and Run in that everyone SAYS they loved them but it's more of a nostalgia driven rose tinted opinion than fact.

      Anonymous

There's a lot of games like jet set radio where people clamor for a new entry because they love some aspect of it and want to see a modern version that fixes the flaws of the old entry, they don't actually want the old game and if you give it to them you will find the interest evaporate. I feel something similar is happening with dragons dogma.

        Anonymous

That's more or less correct. The thing about Jet Set Radio is that it's survived entirely on aesthetics. The actual gameplay part isn't bad by any means, but it's so thoroughly mediocre that anyone who's actually played it could tell you nobody wants the same game again. It's not a great platformer, and it's DEFINITELY not comparable to something like THPS. The reason why I think so many people are hopeful for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is that the des are pretty outspoken in doing their own thing with the gameplay, like how they took out the ability to grind without using the vehicles (BMX/Skates/etc) because it made things feel less varied.

          Anonymous

They nailed the aesthetic and sound which is the hard part but the gameplay looks too similar to Jet set radio for me, I dont know what it is but it doesn't look as fun as THPS yet its not different enough from either for me to say it looks like something new or different. Maybe it'll look better at launch.

            Anonymous

Like I said earlier, I really think the thing that makes or breaks this game is gonna be the level design. The combo system being so intertwined with level routing is a cool idea, but if the levels don't flow well and naturally lead you to different corners/grindrails it's gonna feel like total shit.
I also really wish they'd show off more of how the cops work. The one clip they had in the trailer with the weird handcuff missiles is fascinating.

Not bad. I really hope they have some punk/rock tracks in the full game, though; Hip Hop and the New Jack Swing stuff Naganuma does are great, but they really need some nice raw guitar in there for variety.
Then again, they are from the fricking Netherlands, and I don't know if punk rock stuff ever took off there like it did here.

      Anonymous

JSR is alright. It's a skating game that focuses more on platforming around the level to reach different graffiti spots than actually skating. It's not bad, but definitely elevated hard by the visual/music style.

      Anonymous

You're in a skater graffiti gang and you go around tagging new territory, battling other graffiti gangs or antagonists, platforming, racing, completing challenges like races tricking or reaching crazy places using careful setup timing and momentum. The setting is "Tokyo" but appears more like how you might dream about a city when you're almost having a nightmare. It's over the top simple but fun. All it really needed imo was more trick and movement styles with improved battles but it was good. There's a dog you can unlock and play as
