If you already have Quake 2 on steam or gog the remaster stuff should be available for you. Same thing as with the Quake 1 remaster they did a couple years back. Good stuff honestly.

Does this include everything like Q264 and the new expansion?

          Anonymous

Yes. The remaster is an all-in-one, it might have addons later like the previous remasters did but it doesn't right now so no extra downloads necessary. GOG you can just install the remaster by itself, Steam comes with the original copies of Q2 and the expansions every time and gives you the pick of original or remaster.

Quake 2's not a very good game. I mean it's not bad, it's solid, but too many humanoid enemies and ugly levels. A weird transitional game where they were experimenting with hub-ish structure and objectives that were more than "get to the exit" but you're still mostly navigating crate-filled rooms and metal hallways and blasting guys walking around on raised platforms.

Quake 2 was saved by the mod community.

Action Quake 2, Rocket Arena and Freezetag with the grappling hook back in the day was so much fun.

Not that anon but most FPS games are more fun with VR mods, I mean brutal doom is kind of just okay in non VR but play it in VR and suddenly the headshot hitbox that gets added has extreme importance.

A game being "fun in VR" is equivalent to saying a game is "Fun with friends", like no shit, but that doesn't reflect the average experience.

    >improves
They fricked with the AI and made the whole game a huge mess. Setpieces where you can user traps to kill tougher enemies don't work. Enemies agro immediately and chase you, so they often give up advantageous positions. Because they all rush you like cretins, they hurt one another and infighting is common, while it was occasional in the original. There was a reason jumping attacks were cut from the berserker. It's now one of the hardest enemies to deal with and the most annoying. Flying drones now rush you for melee attacks and die to shotgun easily? Oh yeah and enemies kill themselves quite often in lava, acid or on lasers. There's also something wrong with the hitboxes on occasion. Sometimes it's 3 shots from and SSG to kill a berserker, sometimes 4. The main campaign on hard becomes trivial thanks to those changes, sine enemies just clump up and do dumb shit with the berserkers being just super annoying rather than challenging.
Where it really takes a nosedive is the addons, since they are much harder in general and you're constantly balancing on low HP, so combine berserkers with tanks and tight levels and Quake becomes a cover shooter.
    Other issues include:
    >some crashes that soft-lock PC
    >BFG ball sometimes not rendering
    >bosses sometimes getting stuck
    >gender neutral pronouns
    >shitty multiplayer menu and no dedicated server
Also the whole mission pack by Machine Games is just shit trying to ape Arcane Dimensions.

They also changed the lighting to be completely different. Now water which was blue in the past looks brown and there's lot of brown everywhere too. Ambient occlusion seems to be baked in to the lighting as well.
I don't like the way this shit looks at least they should've made it an optional thing.
If you compare vanilla and rerelease opening level they look pretty different.

Some of them still work like when they're facing away from you it seems. Just they have greater detect range and will most often notice you first. Also the bnerserker you can dip into the lava near the start may jump to avoid it which is amusing if you played the game before, but sort of ruins it.

Quake 2 was the first FPS I ever played unless you count Descent II as an "FPS", and I actually like the AI changes, but I've gotten used to playing doom with mods on ultraviolence difficulty over the years where AI is extremely aggressive and angry in most of them, so that's a me thing. I always thought Quake single player, not just 2, Q1 as well (Quake 3 Arena is one of the best FPS games ever made) were overrated, I was more of a UT99/2004 guy back in the day.

Not that anyone would be able to find out why I preferred Unreal Tournament without piracy nowadays due to epic delisting the games; I sincerely hope epic shills and tim sweeney kill themselves one day.

        Anonymous

Yes, Quake 1 Remaster fundamentally changed the Nightmare difficulty

        Anonymous

Q2 was originally balanced around for what was in the game - including items and the enemies. There was a reason why some of their attacks were left out of the game.. It was meant to be a straightforward shooter.
I've been playing through the Q2 Rerelease and it becomes annoying as frick to play because health is constantly getting low even on 'hard' difficulty. The dogs are annoying as frick to deal with and because of the 'enhanced' AI the enemies are also much more accurate.
I wonder why they did all this? Just because Le Elden Ring was hard? I mean knowing Night Dive they probably didn't even do any playtesting with this shit because they don't even have staff anyway.
I'm pretty old so the original Q1/Q2 are nothing new to me, when Q2 first came out I finished it on nightmare multiple times while playing with a keyboard only etc

For some reason enemies can apparently hear your footsteps and react much earlier than normal as a result? But it's so selective I have to wonder if I'm being bullshitted and some things like the crate berserker pair just have eyes on the back of their heads.

        Anonymous

I haven't experienced this. In fact I've been able to run at full blast up to infantry and blast them in the back with the shotgun, and they didn't hear shit even when I was on top of them.

It's inconsistent. Quake II 64, those soldiers are supposed to see you, not start running your ass down the moment you enter the rooms. The storage facility at the start of Unit 2 in base is supposed to have a part where you drop crates on two Berserkers, and they flip the frick out the moment you roll up on the elevator and make the crates nigh useless. So maybe it's not footsteps, but there is some weird shit going on with detection.

The best thing you can do is record footage of these mistakes. They did a whole bunch of patching to the Quake 1 remaster, and they probably would here if someone cared enough to demonstrate problems. These games are a big deal to a lot of people so it makes sense to fix them up post-release.

This one's been my main complaint. The ideal situation with these remasters is you always make a legacy setting for shit you change, so people who want it to play exactly like the original can do so. The game was built and balanced around how its AI operated before, you don't just go and fricking change that.

Yes, Quake 1 Remaster fundamentally changed the Nightmare difficulty

It honestly should have been an extra difficulty tier instead of replacing the old one. I prefer it to actual Nightmare none the less, but you're supposed to preserve shit, not replace.

Just because Q2 is open source and has other ports doesn't mean that every rerelease that Nightdive has botched has an alternative that works on modern Windows. Wanna play the PC versions of Turok or Forsaken sans Nightdive's questionable changes to gameplay and level design without having to set up a VM? Too bad, you're shit out of luck.

a bunch of the main dev team left after the old blood got released which would explain the huge dip in quality with wolfenstein 2

This is the weirdest compromise I've seen in recent remasters/remakes. Why bother updating Iron Maidens but snub them from the new expansion? Were two different groups working on this and the one tasked with the new levels were the woke ones or something? Even so, I'm surprised they didn't remove them entirely from the whole package, you know how much they hate to be reminded that big breasts exist, even if they're on nightmarish monsters.

It's strange that they're tying Quake and Quake II's universe together two decades later, but it also finally somewhat solves the issue of Quake 1 being completely unlike all the other Quakes in tone. Quake 1 was like a lo-fi lovecraftian romp throughout a dimension the Strogg knew about.
Also in Quake Champions they had already reintroduced the Q1 Eldritch gods as patrons of the Arena Eternal and the such. The Vadrigar are below them and seem to worship them.

I personally hate it. Yeah it's good when fans try to tie two games every now and then, there were many custom maps for both games that tried to do that, but I don't think it should be made canon.

You can stop this specific bit with r_staticshadows 0, but throughout the game their reworking of the lighting causes outdoor locations to inexplicably become fullbright while other locations indoors become darker. They really overdid it, feels like in their rush to improve the lighting engine they forgot how the areas are actually supposed to look.

        Anonymous

Like this shit right here. It's technically more realistic that the area is brightened up by direct exposure to the outdoors, but in vanilla there's supposed to be SOME semblance of shading and shadow beneath the rocks. Despite touting baked in ambient occlusion and other various features, this shit is just borked. The Super Tank's arena is also totally broken in lighting, there's so much outdoor that their render of the map just swathed it all into a single lighting color despite the arena originally being intended to be moody.

It's my biggest sticking point with this entire remaster alongside the Berserker jumps. The choices on the various features don't mean much when these weird problems ensue without any options for handling it, and I say that as someone that really, really likes this remaster.

This definitely feels like a good-will kind of thing, and I approve of the method. I probably would have thrown them 10 bucks or something for the new version, but the fact they don't expect me to makes me respect them a lot more. This is how you don't become the next Randy Pitchford.

what was it like? I know it had achievements with 0G and that it was included in a bonus disc

      Anonymous

I have it. It was just straight up Quake 2 with a controller, 16:9, 60 FPS, 1080p and 4 player local split-screen for co-op or deathmatch. It's nothing amazing in terms of content or differences, but it was a damn fine port. Were it not for certain things with the Remaster not being toggleable (enemy AI/attack changes, dynamic level shadows as you can disable effect shadows, changes to the campaign levels in certain ways), it would completely and utterly render the 360 port a novelty, and for most people that aren't nitpicky it already does thanks to all the additional content and online plus actual QoL control features that the 360 port completely lacked as a nigh 1:1 setup.

It was great for Quake II on the TV, beat the pants off of the PS1 and N64 versions for accomplishing that, and didn't really hit any compromises except you're playing with a controller. That's the gist really.

Was the original hard to run in newer PCs? With how much bullshit there usually is with older PC games a remaster is justifiable enough, it's not like with old console games where the emulator does literally everything for you

  44. 9 months ago

Quakebros, I thought it would be fun to give Quake 2 another chance with the remaster and I don't think I'm actually having much fun. The earlygame starts out pretty rough but things pick up between the prison cells, the mines and the area where you first get the railgun, but in the very final parts of the game (I think anyway) the battles are just againt bullet sponge enemies that are just a slog to get through. It's just draining having to go encounter after encounter of having multiple tank commanders and the gladiators and what not. It slows this shit down to a crawl. Maybe I'm moronic for playing it on Hard mode but it's not even that it's hard, it's just obnoxious and monotonous. I like the enemy variety and the bigger weapon sandbox compared to Quake 1 but I feel like Quake 1 has a less is more approach that makes it more fun to play. Do the extra campaigns do Quake 2 justice or would I just be in for more of the same? I really wanna like this game but this was the first game in a while where I just had to stop and take a break because I'm not having fun.

It's certainly different. Not a bad sort of different, but a "this isn't very Q2 in level design" different. Much more gimmicky and setpiece-y, since the hub sends you off to maps that technically have six different marines doing different missions, so their inventories don't carry over from mission to mission. It's worth a try but just know you're effectively ping-ponging between their various wild ideas they cooked up rather than running a consistent beginning-to-end trail.

Because it would barely be different from Doom Eternal and not do enough to stand out. Quake Champions was shit unless you play the QCDE version, and if they try to go too far in the atmospheric direction people are going to accuse it of either being a dime a dozen call of duty clone with monsters, a Doom 3 reboot, or "Amid Evil with guns instead of magic shit"

I actually like quake and even I don't know how I'd make a modern sequel to it, especially since community made content gives me all the quake I could ever want, just like doom .wads give me more classic doom than I could ever play in a lifetime.

That's why if they're going to make another Quake game they need to go full dimension hopping Lovecraftian stuff. Maybe a more cohesive them for the series is that mankind is looking out into the universe/experimenting with technology and we uncover shit that threatens the very fabric of reality.

More like take Quake 1's setting to its fullest degree. Not just the dark magic realms of 1, or the sci-fi bases of 1 and 2, but the bizarre dreamscapes of the Arcane Dimensions and the Machine Games expansions. Have lots of different kind of enemies from dark magic, to Lovecraftian, to sci-fi

            >Lovecraftian
Most of it was about medieval knights, blobs, a yeti, ogres with grenade launchers and giant spiders. You defeat shiggy with a telefrag and despite magic being mentioned, in game items are a pentagram, armor and quad damage. So calling Q1 Lovecraftian is a stretch.

If I recall Masters of Doom correctly, Quake was the result of an unintended disjointed design and the visual designers not ever wanting to do Doom again, which is funny because the whole thing with Tom Hall and Id having to go back to Doom eventually.
Also, Lovecraft themes have been tainted by twitter c**ts so I would rather have them do anything else.

Yeah, I know development was a mess and they made up the dimension hopping stuff to explain it, but Shub-niggurath, Shamblers, Vores and Fiends are meant to be Lovecraftian sort of enemies and to better set the series apart from other shooters they should develop that angle more.

Yeah Quake 1's development was a fricking mess, and they even mention aspects of the old design in game magazines and such. There was going to be a warrior NAMED Quake, and he'd have a Thor hammer. And they had all this RPG junk that they ended up scrapping because I guess it didn't come together. For better or worse they stuck to what they knew though, and Quake being "dark fantasy x space marines" is actually kind of fun. Even if Doom was already "sci-fi x religion."

    remaster done right

Q1 was more overt by the nature of how few polygons everything had, but this one's a real nice subtle. The models are enhanced, but the textures and design try to be as accurate as they can be while putting from to detail. The weapons especially hit that point of "you wouldn't really realize they're actually enhanced until you realize there's no wobble or know the game enough to tell."

It's crazy too because they got Millennia to handle the weapon item/world models. They didn't slack on the effort for something most people might not be able to make a good eye for.

that it's a remaster done right in the sense that it looks like you remember it looking. And on top of that a bunch of options where you can make it look like it actually did, just like with the Quake remaster.

RTX 2080 Super yet an i7-6700 here, I'm massively overqualified, but I can keep a rocksteady 240 FPS where even Q1 inexplicably stuttered and had dips into the top 100's at complete random.

yeah. I don't think the stutters in that one was tied just to performance. there was something fricked with the physics while running and looking around. their port of blood had a similar thing at some less common frame caps (my screen is 75) but there it could be overridden by just setting a higher cap

        >Does it run worse than any sourceport

It's not the quake news I was hoping for, but it's neat. The new expansion is a nice touch but the graphical overhaul is incredibly bare bones considering we already had raytraced Q2 that looked nice. Hopefully this is a prelude to a quake series reboot or quake 5 of some sort.

      Anonymous

      >graphical overhaul is incredibly bare bones

I love how Quake 1 and 2 remasters do this. Just a slight improvement like how all the enemies have facial geometry now instead of a flat face. It's an improvement while still keeping the soul of the original intent.

      >raytraced Q2 that looked nice
It looks like ass and is a tech demo for Nvidia's drop-in "raytracing" wrapper. Engines like Berserker were laughed at for being the "ZDoom with global bilinear filtering and shitty 3D models" of the Q2 world (it exists) as it is, and I strongly doubt anyone involved in it's release considered it to be the definitive Q2 experience, which is why this new remaster exists

      >Why are there 50 enemies in every room?
can be answered by "They didn't learn SHIT from the courthouse fight in TNC and need to stop begging senpai to notice them for a modern Doom game they'll never touch"

that's kinda true for expansion packs, and just late-stage doom 1&2 as well. I wonder if It might not just be shareware syndrome. Like if the difficulty should increase, so has the enemies, and then you need room to put them, right? Quake doesn't have to because they made the enemies beefier.
I guess alternatively, you could just put further stretches without health/ammo. but if you don't push the enemy amounts as well, seasoned players probably won't lose much of either, anyway?

      Anonymous

At least from the one level I tried, it's less so more than placing 50 enemies in a room than placing those enemies haphazardly without any thought to pacing or encounter design. I only tried one level so far, Too Deep/Too Greedy, and while visually it was beautiful it's missing a certain je ne sais quoi that original Quake games had, and moving from room to room killing things started to feel like a chore.

I'm still mixed on the changes and I'm near the end of the main campaign.
For every time I'm impressed with the new AI it does something moronic and makes the old AI look smart. The new Berserker slam feels overtuned. It doesn't hit hard, but it throws you for miles and seems impossible to avoid when they do it.
The guns have been fricked with too, the railgun is weaker for some reason and the BFG still isn't worth a shit. Otherwise I like what they've done. Most enemies are now an actual threat, but why do the fliers keep trying to melee? They were more of a threat when they hung back and shot you, here they invite SSG retaliation.

You just described Q2 original. They traded brown for gray with colored lighting. Enemies are ugly as sin even for the time and just weird biomechanical amalgams that don't look interesting. That's not even bringing into play the sound design, or lack thereof.

What the frick. I launched Quake 2 last night just to check what's new and didn't expect to marathon it. Why? Quake 2 was supposed to be garbage, especially the campaign. Why did they mess with the weapon change speed? Why did they add dynamic shadows? What's with the graphics tweak? They fricked up. They shouldn't suppose to improve the game, just leave it as is. Sure there's an option to play the original, but who's going to bother with it with these changes? They retroactively improved Quake 2, can't wait for Q2 apologists who have never touched the original.
For the record I didn't buy it. I got Q2 for free on Bethesda's launcher, then it got shut down, library migrated to Steam and got the free update so frick you.

The remasters of Q1 and Q2 are only "good" because the originals were flawed. I know PCMR doesn't like to speak ill of their gods, but id software only had talent in SOME of the things needed to make a game. Their games all had to be fixed by community effort as best outsiders could, and then properly once the source arrived.
Other remasters are objectively worse versions of better games made by people with no soul and no concept of good game design.

That palette looks really shallow like when you played in software mode before you got a 3d accelerator.

                Anonymous

It's not like the software and 3D accelerated modes used different textures or anything, it's just easier to see the banding and lack of bitdepth when the textures are unfiltered. I don't know about Q2 specifically but a lot of older games used 256-color paletted textures even if the graphics were calculated/rendered to a higher bitdepth.

I never played top left because I had a Voodoo before even the test came out. Bottom left is the best for me overall, but it's still lipstick on a pig.

Peak contrarianism. D2R, AoE2DE are proof if you want to be a homosexual and pretend that the remasters of Q1 and 2 weren't good

I'd argue Monkey Island 1 and 2 for the voice alone, though 1's design choice for Guybrush is a little perplexing.

The remastered art style for MI1 was absolutely horrendous, and you could only get voice+original graphics by running it through ScummVM. MI2 was a bit better and you had more options, but it was still kinda ugly to the point the whole thing felt like a wasted effort. Full Throttle's graphical overhaul was a lot better than those two.

Full Throttle is just meh. It's at least better than DOTT; but I don't feel the desire to revisit like MI1-3, Sam and Max, Grim Fandango, or The Dig.

The best one is the software mode

Man, I used to play Quake 2 on software mode, at 320x240 and most probably it was running at 15-20fps or something like that, yet I never realized about it.

I've noticed that the machine gun in SP no longer has recoil. Thank frick, although, this makes the weapon a bit too strong now.

Nooo, I loved that shit as a kid.

The recoil never really made it hard to use, since the recoil would max out pretty quick.

What's the go-to source port for Quake 2 these days? Played the remaster for a bit, finished the base campaign and 64, but I think I should experience the Mission Packs with the original enemy AI and design, since both Xatrix and Rogue seemed to have much more skill with level design than 1997 id judging by how much I enjoyed Kingpin, Alice, and RtCW.

There's nothing this remaster adds that hasn't been already done or added by the community.
For free and in a higher quality.

It adds a one-click solution for playing the game in a decent state on modern machines, especially consoles.

Could I have sought out an original ISO and researched whatever was needed to get it to run in the way I would have liked? Probably. Would I ever have done that? Probably not, because I don't care about Q2 that much. But having it accessible with the touch of a button and zero hassle on PS5 is worth 10 bucks to me, and the removal of all the hurdles is enough to give it a replay.

I find it comfier, also I'm almost 40 and my joints are starting to act up a bit, and controller works better for me. But keep seething about how other people enjoy their games.

I don't care, it's not going to help that moronic wannabe overwatch game to gain any players. Quake was based around teamplay and/or being even (duels etc.), now morons decided to create their own overwatch, but woopsie, it didn't work.

    Waste of money remaster.

The N64 content is surprising harder than the main game. I think it's the new AI, they go berserk trying to kill you now compared to the original AI.

These graphics suck. All the textures are super low resolution.
