I think people would still riot in 2024. You don't get how far MS was trying to go. By today's standards, the roots of ideas that would take another decade to get where MS was fast-forwarding to are still in their infancy. We might get to 2030 and Xbone would still be too radical.

Not really, the writing was already on the wall. Xbox was a huge blunder and 360 was only successful for a few years while PlayStation was at its absolute worst, then sales and library both dried up halfway through the gen and PS3 outsold it.

Playstation consoles basically stick around until their second successor is about to launch. Hell, look at PS4 now. It won't be officially retired until we're seriously talking about PS6. That's how it goes with Sony, it's how it went with PS1/2, not just 3.

It really wasn't the one conference, that was just the culmination of 3 years of events. Don Mattrick got the job because Kinect was so popular. As soon as it blew up in 2010, MS dismantled most of their internal teams, moved tons of resources over to Kinect shit, and instituted the boring Forza/Gears/Halo trilogy that we still have today.

They designed the Xbox One around two headlines basically, "Kinect most successful peripheral in history" and "most used program on Xbox 360 is Netflix."

The crazy part is.... that was the most important gen to either win or establish yourself as a serious competitor in. They did the complete opposite, they gave up the ghost. Fumbled the bag. Absolutely, irredeemably shit the bed that gen.

Gen 8 was Dogshit, but it was absolutely pivitol because it served as the base for where everyone made their online game library. yes, 360 and ps3 to a cetain extent had this, but the earlier part of that gen didn't have full on retail titles just ports of arcade games and "PSN/arcade" level titles. Gen 8 was the gen where you could go FULLY digital if you wanted to, right from the jump.

Xbox can't save their brand with free games. because free games don't cost money. People will always stay with their playstations because they have already invested in sony's walled garden from gen 8. It wouldn't make sense for them to leave playstation now in Gen 9. They could have had a 50/50 split almost like gen 7, but because of how bad they lost Gen 8, They'll NEVER catch up.

everything kinda went to shit after 1 E3 presentation.
Xbox liked to go first in the day, they were planning to have the xbox be an all in one media device (which it did become). Where you could play games, watch tv, and use streaming services.
Og xbox and Xbox 360 experimented and succeeded with online multiplayer so they tried to case motion control which was successful for the Wii. They tried to ship every xbox with a kinect just as they used to ship every xbox with an XBL headset, because it would let developers know that every Xbox had the hardware and it was safe to develop for.
The problem was it increased the price of the console (motion control that is now common with VR headsets and Voice control that is in basically every device today).
They were also planning on creating an always online service where you could share games with friends. kinda like if you owned a game on steam and could let your friend play it with you even if they dont own it. but it would require always online. (Always online is now standard, and xbox gamepass exists now)

later in the day Sony made a comedic response to the xbox presentation which targeted the poor black people that is the western sony fanbase, who only owned a sony platform for free online. sony made a big fuss about sharing and reselling physical games (how is gamestop doing?). Made a fuss about always online (which im pretty sure they are too now). But came in a bit cheaper because they didnt ship with any new tech. Though their console would eventually also follow xbox and become a netflix machine, they would also charge for online, become a digital store front, fumble backwards compatibility, struggle to create a stable online service.

the media made a big deal about military working in submarines not being able to play video games 2 miles below the ocean because of always online, and Mattrick told them to buy an xbox 360 instead.

in America it was pretty cool
back then i didnt have a gaming Pc, so i used the same TV to play games that i would watch Tv. Xbox One would let you auto sign into your cable provider and watch TV or twitch/youtube on the same screen while playing games.
Even saying "xbox record that" was more useful then having to take my hands off the controls to hit some Hotkey on a keyboard or fiddle with random menus to record the last few moments.

Most new releases have denuvo. If you don't get online for long enough the verification lot becomes outdated and the game gets locked. If you are pirating, or using GOG, or not playing new AAA games, you are not the norm. The norm is AAA on Steam or other launcher with denuvo.

You mention streaming services but the Xbone's pitch wasn't that at all, it was fricking all-in on cable TV in 2013 when it was pretty obvious which way the wind was blowing with people getting tired of paying a hundred dollars a month for channels they don't watch to get the one they wanted.
That's why they had all the split-screen view bullshit that also infected Windows 8 with the Metro apps and an HDMI in port - so you could have your Xbone middleman your cable box and your TV because the pitch was that Xbox is the new watercooler and the central hub for your entertainment. Instead of turning on your TV, cable box and receiver with a remote like some fricking rube, you'd just yell at Kinect to turn the TV on.
Evidently Microsoft misjudged how much people disliked having to manually operate their devices with physical buttons.

Mattrick's faults don't begin and end with a conference, and to call it an absolute disaster is somehow selling it short. No one's blaming him for Spencer's incompetence though, that's a different issue altogether.

        Anonymous

it's been 11 years, you can only blame him for so much. xbox had two generations to get their shit together and they couldn't. wii u flopped twice as hard as the xbone and nintendo recovered from that.

          Anonymous

And that all is Spencer's fault. We can't blame Mattrick for the last 10 years but he is at fault for spending the 4 or 5 years before tearing the brand down internally and handing Spencer a broken thing to fix. Spencer didn't and that's his and Microsoft's cross to bear, but it's Mattrick that put the brand where it still is.

This fricking dipshit thinks he can buy 5 publishers at the 11th hour because he had no actual launch titles for xbox ready besides a shitty halo GAAS slop, force them to rush games out the door, and suddenly he's nintendo for adults. 2013 was a little more than just "cringe". It was a glimpse into the dystopian future that Microsoft as a company wanted for the games industry. They showed that they wanted to spy into your home, that they wanted to force peripherals on you, that they wanted you to always be connected to them, that they wanted to kill second hand gaming, and perhaps worst of all that they didn't give a single shit about video games anyways. 2013 isn't shit on because of haha funny cringe conference, that is a child's understanding of it. Microsoft said the quiet part out loud, we got to see the man behind the curtain with their intentions and to this day they aren't worth trusting. That's a little more damning than just a bad conference, Xbox's (remaining) goodwill was thoroughly poisoned that year.

                >Having good games won't save Xbox
Therein lies the problem. This is what Phil genuinely thinks. It's not a "hurrr they're making console gaming dystopian" these are the same people who were okay to pay to play their games online. They'll gladly get fricked in the ass by microsoft as long as they got halo. Their games are shit and the CEO has a defeatist mentality and refuses to address this, so people dropped xbox. That's the truth.

Post-2013, sure. You throwing all of that under the bus shows that you don't get how much customer goodwill they lost with their vision that year. It absolutely was a concern that Microsoft wanted to install an Orwellian nightmare into your house, it got to a point where games wouldn't save their vision because it was that horrific, not that there were games slated that year anyways.

If other embarrassing conferences were like shooting yourself in the foot, the Xbox One reveal was like slowly sawing yourself in half with a rusty sawblade. I cannot overstate how much damage that one conference did; the PS4 literally won the 8th generation simply by advertising itself as not being the Xbox One, and it launched with nothing but ports and frickin' Knack. Other conferences, like shooting yourself in the foot, could be recovered from; Xbox after that 2013 conference has been nothing but half a person crawling on the ground, their organs trailing behind them, inevitably doomed to die.

PS4/Xbox One was a worse fight to lose because it's the time period where digital libraries became mainstream on console. Now everyone who switched to PS4 from 360 has a library they'd be giving up if they switched back.

If you were high on Sony Copium after E3 2006, you could at least try to justify the $600 price tag in the forums online
      >60GB hard drive (premium Xbox 360 had 20GB)
      >Blu Ray player
      >muh cell processor (nobody at the time knew if this would actually matter but it still provided hopium)

There was just absolutely no talking points for Xbox fans back in 2013.
      >pay $500 for Xbox one vs $400 for PS4
      >the multiplat games run worse due to wore hardware (i.e. Battlefield 4, games running at 1080p vs 900p)
      >Always online
      >Forced Kinect peripheral whether you want it not
      >Halo already on the decline

Call it childish, but you need to have pride in your purchasing decisions. That's what the heart of the console war is. Trying to pretend you're too stoic to care about it just comes across as copium.

With the news that all Xbox console exclusives are being ported to Playstation, it's obvious that Microsoft is bowing out of the console war / race entirely. The Xbox Series consoles will be the very last Xbox consoles. Microsoft will now turn towards games publishing and distribution. Sony and Nintendo are now the only companies that will make consoles. Playstation and PC will be your only options for big expensive AAA games.

Because of Kinect. It was an attempt to cater to casuals a la Wii and the core fanbase not only despised it, but for a few years felt outright neglected by MS's Kinect-centric output. When Xbone was revealed to have mandatory Kinect integration, that was the kiss of death for their hardcore contingent, they didn't want another generation of fricking Kinect Star Wars. Never mind that the thing allowed MS to spy on you and check your internet connection, that was just icing on the cake.

You sell games consoles on games, especially exclusives that act as the hook to get the system in the first place. Those features are fine but smartphones, smart tv, Apple tv, Roku, Firestick would all still be there.

Reminder that the reason you couldn't trade physical games was because you'd be able to sell or trade the digital license instead. Good thing digital never took off or else causing them to go back on this would have aged really poorly!

Trading digital is inherently flawed because you're almost certainly locked into a single ecosystem. You wouldn't have the myriad of resale choices that physical has, it would be a "take it or leave it" prospect, and you'd be at the mercy of whoever owns that digital storefront.

Mattrick caused some irreversible damage but Phil didn't really do much to try to fix it. Sony arguably started in an equally shit position with the PS3 and they managed to crawl back to victory, Nintendo had a disaster with the WiiU and they figured it out for the next one.

You'd think Microsoft would bet on a big rebrand and some plan for who and how to sell their system to, but all they really had going was a console with a very similar name, aesthetic, and no real games or anything besides Gamepass. It just felt like they were doing the same shit tbh

Matrick's just a boogeyman, upper management wanted that Wii marketshare at any cost and the Kinect was a modest success. It's just that they got greedy with DRM.

      Anonymous

It wasn't an "equally shit" position and I don't know why people keep saying this. PS3 was overpriced and WiiU had no public presence. Both were good fun to laugh at, but there wasn't anything actually funny about what Microsoft thought the future of video games should look like with first draft Xbone. That shit crossed moral boundaries that PS3 and WiiU never even hinted at, it was a very different problem with far more devastating reputational damage. It was not the same at all, Sony and Nintendo made mistakes that could be recovered from. Microsoft's is going to take a much longer time to forgive.

        Anonymous

        >That shit crossed moral boundaries
Which have been crossed multiple times again and again by multiple companies in the last few years. What MS did wrong was try to push all this shit at once, when they should have been drip feeding that in a span of multiple years. They unironically were looking too far into the future. Sure Sony is still scared shitless by "always online" but with most games requiring day one patches or giga Black person downloads, it's pretty much the same thing. Everything else Xbox tried to push with the initial One has already happened.

        Anonymous

The PS3 wasn't just overpriced, it was overpriced due to the fact that it was loaded up with proprietary tech that had no benefit for gaming applications, but Sony needed the console to buoy their other divisions.

The cell architecture actively hindered game development, Sony burned a lot of developers, lost exclusively and Japanese studios that didn't previously consider Xbox starting making multiplat versions

More like, the 360 was a one hit wonder that was mainly caused by Sony frick-ups, not because the 360/MS did anything particularly well.
Monopolies suck and it's good Sony has some enemies, but MS will never be able to achieve what alright sales they had with the 360. There is simply no reason to own their platforms.

Either way, it's never been better to be gaming on PC with nearly everything non-Nintendo coming to it natively... and tons of Switch games you can just emulate decently enough.

The Xbox OG and the 360 innovated in a bunch of ways that all other companies eventually followed. Such as using off the shelf PC components and the first online service that didn't suck shit

So it was a Playstation console. The PS1 is a CD player and the PS2 is a DVD player, PS3 being a Blu-ray player is par for the course. You're right on Cell though, huge misfire for Sony and PS3 didn't have the sheer market share of PS2 to convince devs to just put up with it.

The Xbox division exists to force Sony to waste money to keep them out of the Microsoft's really money making markets. It worked so well that Sony had to abandon the Viao brand and is looking poised to give up their smart phone division now too.

  33. 3 months ago

I unironically feel massively ripped off. Eventually they're going to turn off the servers and I'm going to be out of so much money. I usually buy physical but there's some shit like DLC and indie games that were only available through the store. This generation it feels like the majority of the games aren't even complete on disk either, so there will come a day when you will not be able to play Hogwarts Legacy, Jedi Survivor, or Starfield unless you already have it on your hard drive.

I don't even care about what name is on the console. XBOX just has a better controller and has backwards compatibility. The playstation controller feels like shit and you have to keep like 4 consoles just because they can't be assed to make one that reads all the older disks.

I will never understand what they were thinking with Xbox One. It's fricking bad when confidently feel like I would have done a better job than this fricking doofus, like genuinely I would have on my own created a marketing plan for this system that would have resulted in millions of more consoles being sold.

They were literally a household name with the Xbox 360, it won that console generation, it doesn't matter that PS3 ultimately ended up selling a couple of more millions, Xbox was everywhere, they were the ones actually influencing the gaming space and were ahead of everything, PS3 was constantly lagging like bare minimum of a year behind the 360. How do you go from fricking beating playstation after the ps2, to completely fricking failing and killing your brand one gen later. Baffling, utterly baffling.

      Anonymous

By giving up your lead halfway through the gen to chase the Wii audience. Kinect didn't flop, but MS weren't as untouchable as they thought they were by the time a new console generation was expected to roll out. Same problem as Nintendo's hubris with WiiU, but Microsoft's direction was more catastrophic whereas Nintendo's was merely confusing.

      >How do you go from fricking beating playstation after the ps2, to completely fricking failing and killing your brand one gen later. Baffling, utterly baffling.
Hubris. They thought they had their X360 era userbase by the balls and that nobody would jump ship. Turns out that no, people did not care about their cheevos and gamerscore, and for gen 8 they would get whatever seemed best, and that turned out to be the PS4 even after MS backpedaled on their bullshit.
Gen 8 meanwhile did give manufacturers something to grab consumers by the balls, and that's their entire digital library. If half your games are in your PSN account, you're not going to get an XSX. And so MS lost gen 9 since day.

So, uh, legally, how the frick does this work? A major brand releasing on another major brand, aren't there rules that restrict this kind of thing on the legal side? Could it be that this was some deal they stuck in court during the Activision case?

      No?

Honestly if you were really cynical and paranoid you could say this is Microsoft throwing out sacrifices to use in court so they can make even more acquisitions; I'm sure Embracer would love a cash injection right now and Microsoft would love having all those IPs and games to throw onto game pass. Starfield or Hi Fi Rush didn't really move Xboxes so what's the harm in tossing them onto PS5, but getting shit like Tomb Raider, Dead Island, Duke Nukem, etc. long term would make game pass even better looking.

There were some genuine attempts at system sellers, albeit tone deaf ones. Titles like Uncharted Golden Abyss, Killzone Mercenary and LittleBigPlanet were technically proficient, but they were also just pared down versions of console titles. Sony wanted to push the thing as a portable PS3 and some of its early first party software suggests as much. It was a vision, albeit a misguided one.

That goes hand in hand with the diminishing returns of current tech. Phones are catching up to console gaming, just like portable consoles are. That's where the major shift is going to be. Turn off all the RTX and most games still run at 60 fps on 10xx series GPUs.

The Xbox One reveal was insane. Full PC support was a blow. The end was Gamepass though, there's no way to ever come back from a desperation move like that unless it actually works and you rapidly monopolize the market. Now they are stuck with a stagnant pool of leeches who expect cutting edge hardware sold at a loss AND expect Microsoft to pay for all their games.

No, the Xbone is worse than the PS4 in almost all regards. Slower memory (And two kinds on top of it), slower GPU. Even today games tend to get 1080p 30fps on PS4 and 900p 30fps on Xbone because of its limitations.
It's the XboneX which is considerably stronger than the PS4 Pro, but nowadays almost no developer bothers with those two.

What this shows is that PS5 didn't sell while there were no PS5s to purchase. Nothing else.
Microsoft paid top dollar to get priority with fabs during the chip shortage, but as soon as that ended and Sony stocked shelves, sales skyrocketed. People were simply waiting for the chance to get one.

It was a very short lived illusion of competition that did not reflect the wants of the market.

PC barrier of entry ultimately isn't that high compared to consoles, its mostly just that people fail to realize how much money their Xbox Live / PSN subscription adds up to over a few years, and that you also do not need the newest high end shit to play games at reasonable settings.

Consoles still win in convenience though - plug it in and it works, no need to fiddle with installations or settings, easier to fit and use it beside your living room TV without needing a mouse or keyboard.

Xbone was bad but the public was ready to forgive them when Phil took the reigns because ultimately all that matters is the games and Phil promised the games were coming. Microsoft could have had a never ending stream of games from all the studios they own but no they failed to deliver anything and instead they canceled most of the games that were in development for the bone and focused on subscription bullshit that no one except third worlders wanted.

Its funny, you get the feeling the Xbox brand only exists because someone (probably Gates) was just jealous and wanted a few extra million, so they made a console despite knowing frick all about how to do it.

    Really, this was inevitable.
