There are more PS5 with disc drives out there than the digital only cuck version. The new PS5 Slim has a digital upgrade path. Everyone who bought a digital only PS5 is fricked, everyone with a disc PS5 or PS5 Slim is fine.

Xbox liked to go first in the day, they were planning to have the xbox be an all in one media device (which it did become). Where you could play games, watch tv, and use streaming services.
Og xbox and Xbox 360 experimented and succeeded with online multiplayer so they tried to case motion control which was successful for the Wii. They tried to ship every xbox with a kinect just as they used to ship every xbox with an XBL headset, because it would let developers know that every Xbox had the hardware and it was safe to develop for.
The problem was it increased the price of the console (motion control that is now common with VR headsets and Voice control that is in basically every device today).
They were also planning on creating an always online service where you could share games with friends. kinda like if you owned a game on steam and could let your friend play it with you even if they dont own it. but it would require always online. (Always online is now standard, and xbox gamepass exists now)
later in the day Sony made a comedic response to the xbox presentation which targeted the poor black people that is the western sony fanbase, who only owned a sony platform for free online. sony made a big fuss about sharing and reselling physical games (how is gamestop doing?). Made a fuss about always online (which im pretty sure they are too now). But came in a bit cheaper because they didnt ship with any new tech. Though their console would eventually also follow xbox and become a netflix machine, they would also charge for online, become a digital store front, fumble backwards compatibility, struggle to create a stable online service.

Most new releases have denuvo. If you don't get online for long enough the verification lot becomes outdated and the game gets locked. If you are pirating, or using GOG, or not playing new AAA games, you are not the norm. The norm is AAA on Steam or other launcher with denuvo.

Never mind that the thing allowed MS to spy on you and check your internet connection, that was just icing on the cake.

Trading digital is inherently flawed because you're almost certainly locked into a single ecosystem. You wouldn't have the myriad of resale choices that physical has, it would be a "take it or leave it" prospect, and you'd be at the mercy of whoever owns that digital storefront.

Mattrick caused some irreversible damage but Phil didn't really do much to try to fix it. Sony arguably started in an equally shit position with the PS3 and they managed to crawl back to victory, Nintendo had a disaster with the WiiU and they figured it out for the next one.

Hubris. They thought they had their X360 era userbase by the balls and that nobody would jump ship. Turns out that no, people did not care about their cheevos and gamerscore, and for gen 8 they would get whatever seemed best, and that turned out to be the PS4 even after MS backpedaled on their bullshit.
Gen 8 meanwhile did give manufacturers something to grab consumers by the balls, and that's their entire digital library. If half your games are in your PSN account, you're not going to get an XSX. And so MS lost gen 9 since day.

Titles like Uncharted Golden Abyss, Killzone Mercenary and LittleBigPlanet were technically proficient, but they were also just pared down versions of console titles. Sony wanted to push the thing as a portable PS3 and some of its early first party software suggests as much. It was a vision, albeit a misguided one.
The PS4/Xbone generation was the one where long term cloud storage properly came into play and in doing so locked people into their console brand of choice.
If you not only have your PS5 games but also your PS4 game on you PS5 then why would you ever think of moving over to the Series X ?

No, the Xbone is worse than the PS4 in almost all regards. Slower memory (And two kinds on top of it), slower GPU. Even today games tend to get 1080p 30fps on PS4 and 900p 30fps on Xbone because of its limitations.
It's the XboneX which is considerably stronger than the PS4 Pro, but nowadays almost no developer bothers with those two.

Starfield was Xbox's last chance. After spending that much on acquisitions, they needed something to show higher ups. Xbox did nothing over the holiday season even with a huge Starfield push and a price drop.
Now comes reality. Xbox didn't acquire anything. ABK replaced Xbox as the gaming wing of Microsoft.
They bought the wrong studio. Bethesda is incompetent and need a modding scene to fix their games.
If Microsoft goes third party, then I will no longer any video games for the rest of my life. I have any games on the Xbox family of consoles. I have never owned let alone touched a Nintendo or Snoy console. There are both children toys that are beneath me. All of their games are some of the worst piles of crap ever created by sub human hands. Microsoft's games are meant for the working man that does not have time for toys. If the Xbox console stopped being produced, I refuse to get a Piss Station or PC.

Sony already mentioned in the insomniac leaks that they plan to go 3rd party eventually. Nintendo will no doubt release their games on more platforms in a few more generations too since they're always late to everything like online gaming. Consoles as we know it will cease to exist within a decade or two.
They barely have any good will left to begin with. They've been a distant third place for many years, and things are only getting worse. They've demonstrated no ability to right the ship. It's okay to admit defeat and pivot toward a different model. It's smarter than continuing a strategy that obviously isn't working

Microsoft paid top dollar to get priority with fabs during the chip shortage, but as soon as that ended and Sony stocked shelves, sales skyrocketed. People were simply waiting for the chance to get one.

PC barrier of entry ultimately isn't that high compared to consoles, its mostly just that people fail to realize how much money their Xbox Live / PSN subscription adds up to over a few years, and that you also do not need the newest high end shit to play games at reasonable settings.
Consoles still win in convenience though - plug it in and it works, no need to fiddle with installations or settings, easier to fit and use it beside your living room TV without needing a mouse or keyboard.

Xbone was bad but the public was ready to forgive them when Phil took the reigns because ultimately all that matters is the games and Phil promised the games were coming. Microsoft could have had a never ending stream of games from all the studios they own but no they failed to deliver anything and instead they canceled most of the games that were in development for the bone and focused on subscription bullshit that no one except third worlders wanted.
Its funny, you get the feeling the Xbox brand only exists because someone (probably Gates) was just jealous and wanted a few extra million, so they made a console despite knowing frick all about how to do it.
