EA wanted to make console games to cash in on the booming 7th gen. RTS are basically unplayable on console.
The problem isn't as much any lack of sales as much as it is publishers trying to pursue only the shit that makes the most money. After Dead Space 2 made the same amount of revenue as Dead Space 1 despite the budget they decided to interfere a lot more with Dead Space 3 and then that game flopped and they closed the studio in charge. EA is really bad in regards to this, other perfectly fine franchises were fricked over and then the studios were closed and the employees sometimes redistributed to the studios in charge of developing cash cows.
