At first I thought it was obscenely verbose. Like waving it in front of your face to show off levels of full of itself. Then I kept playing it. Now it's one of my favorite games. Top 20 at least.

  4. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

Yes if you want an immersive game that feels like playing a rules-light tabletop RPG, with a proper story that treats like you a functioning adult with a variety of themes that will leave you thinking about it for a long time.

No if you don't want a game mostly centered around reading text/listening to narration. Or if you don't like stories with lots of real world political elements. Also if the main character always being wacky and goofy puts you off too much from enjoying the story. I tried to play the game as serious as possible because I was getting invested in world/characters, but even picking the most serious/least insane option is poked at and played as your character being almost comedically boring.

I overall loved it and it's one of my favorite games, but it is definitely not for everyone. Also Kim is the best deuteragonist in video games, and can make a good case for all of fiction.

        Kim? Yes.

        Anonymous

for kim you have to pick specific dialogue options and then spean almost a full in-game day with your character thinking about it before you ask him and he says "yes. can we get back to the investigation please"

        Anonymous

Yes, but you'd never know unless you built up certain skill points and then pry it out of him.

The joke is that you practically need a guide to unlock that dialogue path and then it doesn't matter and the game mocks you for spending all that time trying to find out.

        Anonymous

I honestly believe that Kim would say yes just to get Harry to stop investigating since he is clearly obsessed by this topic right now and wont settle on no.

The three builds have the same stat distribution, but to different stats, so they're all fine in the sense that you won't miss anything major or have a shitty experience with one of them. If you decide to go custom, I wouldn't stray too terribly far from that distribution (5, 4, 2, 1). A fun thing to do is second playthrough polar opposite of the first. I did sensitive and then thinker

I really wish there was a game like Disco Elysium but without all the twitter politics bullshit. That shit weighed down an otherwise 10/10 game. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything, too. Focusing entirely on Henry, his struggles and his relationship with the city (and Kim) would've been more than enough.

      Anonymous

      >It has absolutely nothing to do with anything, too
      wasn't that the entire point
during the dream sequence with Dora, every thought you've internalized, any vision quest you've completed ends up amounting to nothing, where this extremely shallow political lens harry has been seeing everything through turns out to be both ultimately irrelevant and more importantly just a giant cope for her leaving

        Anonymous

Yes, I know the game loves its navelgazing and talks about this, but the fact still remains that a solid 15% of dialogue in the game is about politics

What's worse is that so much dialog is about politics, races, states and all of it is fictional. I don't care about politics in real life, less I care about completely made up shit. I can't even see any link to real life politics.

      Anonymous

nothing in the game ever felt like twitter politics.
Politics are either the butt of a joke in the game or treated with a relative degree of seriousness based on the fictional world itself. The game does a good job of showing that every side has it's problems, and illustrating that in a perfect world some ideologies make sense but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.
It made for a nice meta commentary. Sure it's nice to be attached to the idea of communism but with the circumstances of human nature it would never work out.

This is a lie. The biggest lie about this game. Constantly pushed forward by the Discord troons who keep opening these threads and keeping up the /ksg/-tier forced discussion here.

It's a good game. But please stop lying. Just be honest: "It's a unique RPG with very good writing that just so happens to be pandering to communists, but you'll enjoy it if you ignore it"

le "making fun of all positions" is a lie when the game takes nothing more serious than playful jabs at its own preferred ideology while dripping spite at everything else.

        >The game does a good job of showing that every side has it's problems
nice copywriting, but I've played the game and I know the only ""flaw"" they give the socialist politcial faction is that it got overpowered and now it's a shadow of its former self. Every other faction is more aggressively criticized, or outright irredeemable, like the "fascist" faction. Hell, just compare how each political alignment is described in game. The game isn't subtle about its bias

It's kinda funny to wish for a disco elysium "without politics" or to say you enjoyed the game besides the politics. You interacted with and considered the political themes of the game without realizing it. You just don't realize how fundamentally entwined some concepts are within our mundane, seemingly non political lives. Labor, ownership, alienation, money, law, justice, collective action, power, violence, diseases/deaths of despair, etc. You're imagining a distinction or separation that doesn't exist

    its not even a game
    there is no gameplay
    there is no challenge
its just gobbledeeasiatic meaningless kooky dialog and you get points by sitting through 30 hours of it to pass other checks, which lets you sit through more kooky shitty dialog

the only actual game play in this "game" is picking up garbage and putting it in a plastic bag for a couple cents

It's not even a point and click adventure.
There is nothing to figure out or use your head with. Everything you need is highlighted, nothing requires thought to unlock or use. You simply plow through overly verbose and zany dialog which gives you points, then you use the points on the highlighted objects to use them. Don't have enough points to unlock that thing or use that other thing? Just talk to someone else then and get points.

There is zero strategizing points, you can't fail.

There is literally no gameplay aside from picking up garbage. The garbage is not highlighted, so you actually have to interact with the environment to spot the garbage, then you click on the garbage and take it to the recycle bin to get 24 cents.

Not even being hyperbolic, it is not a game.
