So does this shit have a fricking memory leak issue or something? Because whenever I play games after having Firefox opened with lots of tabs I get sudden huge framedrops at points, doesn't seem to matter what game, if I closed Firefox,or ran it in troubleshoot mode; only fix so far seems to just be to restart my PC.

close your fricking tabs and stop alt-tabbing you adhd zoomzoom
Literally doesn't fricking work you Black person, only restarting the PC does.
then your problem is something else.
Frick you No, I need those tabs
I don't have issues unless its a specific website. I noticed youtube has become less stable the past couple months and will impact performance.
>google product becomes unstable when used with non-google products
hm...
It worked fine before their last UI/UX update. I think they are intentionally bloating their own website.
Pretty sure the same thing happens with chrome, you just don't hear it as much because who the frick uses chrome in this day and age
literally every old person uses Chrome
I don't even know how it gets on their PC, they have to fricking call their kids to install things usually, but it manages to show up anyway.
It gets installed because there's pop-ups when using Google Search (and maybe other Google products) on a non-Chrome browser
Probably reads something like "Google <product> works best with Google Chrome" and that's enough for any normalgay, especially boomers, to click the big obvious Install button
Most people I know use Chrome, even people who used to use Firefox. I still use Firefox, though. The "add keyword for this search" feature is just too useful.
basically everyone uses chrome moron
pretty sure Chromes comes preinstalled on phones and some laptops
google has been pushing youtube to run slower on other browsers for a while
This. You can see a lot of commits to the Firefox repository that are basically "Fix Youtube, again".
Google loves to fricking break it on anything that's not Chromium, and now that Edge and Opera dropped their old engines, that means only Firefox.
>He keeps tabs open for months at a time
i don'tt know. just use different browser lmao. nobody uses firefox anymore. get the epic gayming opera browser or something if your afraid of google botnet
So, you continue to have the problems after closing Firefox? Well, then that's certainly not the problem. Once the process quits, the operating system will immediately be able to allocate memory of other processes to the pages that it used to consume, there's no lasting effects even if it used up the entirety of your physical memory.
Ganker - Technology
Ganker pisses and shits itself if you ask them any question that could even remotely be considered layman so it's better to just ask Ganker since its partly game related
Something like "Firefox has X issue and Chrome doesn't so I'm switching" should do the trick.
It's like anything where you spend your time in a community that is only able to talk about one thing it comes to a point where all the discussion about that has been played out and everyone is cranky and irate to continue discussing it but as soon as someone bring something outside that subject the desperation to talk about something new means the discussion is upbeat and topical.
So what is the browser I should be using in 2023 anyway?
Chrome seems the most functional but I don't enjoy giving google more info on me than I have to.
I've had issues with it when I have it open and go in and out of sleep mode.
I've used Firefox since 3.x and it's literally just worked for me all this time.
Yes I used it during the period before the Quantum re-work
No, I will not contribute to the Chromium/Blink monopoly
firefox itself usually doesnt have problems, it's usually the extensions
one of the updates broke my password manager which was causing the extension to make firefox become incredibly laggy. i had to disable everything and re-enable extensions one-by-one to diagnose it
I panic swapped to firefox when the whole adblocker scare was going on and haven't had issues
i use microsoft edge and it seems to work well. is there anything better/more optimized for while gaming cause i like to watch vtuber streams on my second monitor and have Ganker open on my third monitor while i grind online games on my first monitor
Your choices for a modern browser are Firefox, Safari, or different flavours of Chromium
Chrome, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, etc. all are Chromium-based and all use the same Blink rendering engine
You have not gone deep enough into the Browser rabbit hole
So you're PC runs slow when you have Firefox open and when Firefox is closed, and this has somehow led you to believe that Firefox is the problem. Do you even understand what a memory leak is?
Jesus fricking christ...
Has Firefox ever NOT had a memory leak?
For like 95% of its life and that includes right now
>For like 95% of its life
Try librewolf
For me its Opera GX
pill me on it, i've seen plenty of youtubers shill it, is it actually decent?
their twitter is very homoerotic and appeals to the Ganker crowd
I like it because it's lightweight and the dark mode theme options are really cool.
Most browsers in the modern day are chromium. It's either that or microsoft shit or firefox. I used firefox for a long ass time but I got sick of the constant performance issues and crashing. Firefox is not what it used to be.
But Opera is literally owned by a shady chinese company, you shouldn't use it.
What do you suggest then? As I said Firefox is now a gigantic piece of shit and anything Microsoft isn't even an option.
To be completely honest I trust China hell of a lot more than Microsoft.
I have no problems with Firefox, you sound moronic
How long have you been using it? Unless they changed something recently last time I used it, it ran like shit. I used Firefox from around 2010 to 2021, which then had a noticable drop in quality. I got sick of the constant crashing and freezing.
It definitely has better performance now
Different anon but I've used Firefox for more than a decade, since a little before 3.0
I literally can not remember the last time Firefox crashed or full locked on me
I don't load up on extensions though. Just UBO, ViolentMonkey + GankerX, Bitwarden client, and Multi-Account Containers
All I had for extensions was basic shit like adblock. Didn't even have more than 5 or 6 tabs open at a single time either. The only thing I can think of is that my last computer was a 2018 Acer Aspire. Definitely wasn't a gaming computer but it should definitely be able to handle basic web browsing. After switching to GX all my issues disappeared.
Firefox actually BTFOs Chr*me in benchmarks. Sounds like you're rocking a 20th century toaster.
I was, see
Regardless even on older hardware it shouldn't run like it did. Web browsing is a simple task, it shouldn't require enormous computing power.
You unfortunately have no idea of the horrors that are going into webdev.
Chromium. It's still Chrome, it still spies on you, but its fully open source and has a lot of AIDS removed from it. Firefox-based browsers are just the new IE.
do NOT use shit forks like Br*ve, Librewolf, Waterfox, or Ungoogled Chromium. You don't want to entrust your browsers to literal who's. Most of them are unaudited.
>To be completely honest I trust China hell of a lot more than Microsoft.
you're fricking moronic, why don't you move to China or Russia then?
Frick off Bill Gates.
I know Zhang is spying on me for it but I really like the workspace sidebar.
If Firefox had a similar function I would switch in a heartbeat
If you're using the internet in any capacity, Uncle Sam is also spying on you.
It's a chrome reskin owned by a chinese company
>i've seen plenty of youtubers shilling it
Do zoomers really?
Instant skip
You have a crypto miner installed
It's probably windows' fault, switch to linux
It's crazy that you need a 300+ line user.js file just to stop Firefox from doing bad things
It STILL phones home to firefox.settings.services.mozilla.com unless you block that externally like in /etc/hosts, because it's hard-coded into the source code.
This is the best web browser available...
>This is the best web browser available...
honestly not for a long time now.
chromium has been the best browser since like 2015 or but recently google has been fricking over chromium as much as firefox.
I am talking about in terms of privacy and freedom while still being usable, not irrelevant "page loads 0.1ms faster" stats.
>I am talking about in terms of privacy and freedom
Literally no one cares about those anymore
thats still chromium.
chromium has been less privacy invasive than firefox for quite the time now.
can you link me to a guide or something?
Go through the entire Arkenfox and Tor Browser user.js
https://github.com/arkenfox/user.js/blob/master/user.js
https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser/-/blob/tor-browser-102.12.0esr-12.5-1/browser/app/profile/001-base-profile.js
Don't just copy/paste, it may take 1-2 hours but it's not that bad.
Make your own user.js, and create a Firefox profile with it already in the folder you choose
firefox -p
^ Starts Firefox profile manager
Open about:networking to check all the automatic connections Firefox is making. Use Wireshark to verify what connections it's making.
the fact that it has so much telemetry and calls, how does it affect the average user?
>how does it affect the average user?
It doesn't, but I'm not an average user.
I don't like Firefox raping me by making automatic connections I didn't tell it to.
I think Google Safe Browsing and OCSP are especially bad, telling Google every file you download, and some other third-party every site you visit.
The average user doesn't care that microsoft/google/meta/FBI/MSS is watching them jerk off
Yeah there's no way 90% of these do anything, most of it is down to a few key ones like disk vs memory cache or the http bullshit
No, that's just windows spyware in the background thats doing it
Every single web browser experiences memory leaks. Websites are to blame
Also, chr*me rats you out to israelitegle via prefetch.
Use waterfox instead, it's a non-israeli fork of Firefox that runs faster and collects less information
Its owned by an ad company. Use librewolf instead.
>my pc starts shitting itself when I turn it on
>it continues shitting itself when I open my browser and doesn't stop when I close it
>the only possible explanation is that it's the browser's fault
I know zoomers are moronic and tech illiterate but for frick's sake
Firefox has devolved into absolute shit, it’s worse than Chrome now with the overhead and bloat. I’ve been using this browser for 20 years and it’s currently in the worst state it’s ever been.
>can't ctrl+click urls in the url bar to open them in a new tab BUT stay on the original tab and keep the url drop down open
this is the only feature i miss from Chrome it makes it easy to open multiple tabs from one url drop down
shift middle
just click your scroll wheel to open links in a different tab.
This. It's a nitpick but one that really bothered me.
Though what made me switch was finding out that Firefox has the most moronic and useless history manager created.
At worst I have to restart firefox to free hogged up ram
Might be an issue with some extensions, idk
guess your opened videos not blocked/suspended and consuming your FPS pool
flush your ram every 5 min
i have 21 firefox windows open
one of those windows has 286 tabs (not all open)
i have a problem
That's cute, I had almost 8000 tab open on my phone, and 500 on my PC.
>still using google search
>not using startpage or even DDG
Thanks for the recommendations
DDG sucks fricking ass
I had to use Kiwi to get the old tab page layout back, I fricking hate Google for forcing this shit on everyone.
Anon, if you kill the firefox process, all the memory the process used is freed. A memory leak doesn't make weird behaviour after the program. It's just a bunch of memory that can't be deleted anymore, because the programmer forgot to delete something he allocated.
You might have some more serious issues if you need to restart the pc.
It absolutely has more issues than people let on
Scrolling on arch Linux is broken
Vivaldi is the browser for big boys.
anon, do you have dark theme youtube open? if so, the cinematic mode is eating our PC away
Elaborate.
Firefox GPU acceleration is still buggy and causes crashes if you have Youtube open
Solution: don't have Youtube open
I thought this shit was supposed to be lightweight?
>Be me, moronic
>Still using 11 year old MacBook
>Shitty i5 and 4gb of ram
>Open troonyfox, 2 maybe 3 Ganker tabs
>”WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR”
>Meanwhile Chrome, 8 active chan tabs, YouTube playing in the background, 17 google search tabs I forgot to close
>Runs so cool it wears sunglasses
Am I living in the opposite timeline?
>thought this shit was supposed to be lightweight?
who said that? firefox always had shit performance but most people don't use old toasters so why even care
I've had a toaster for a very long time and firefox didn't shit itself when smoothscolling unlike chrome
Works on my machine.
I miss the old logo.
pm'ed you the fix 😉
Use Linux.
open your task manager next time to see if your RAM usage is at 100%.
with firefox, ive had it a bunch of times already where i would either get a memory leak or other weird behaviour and when i close the browser and restart it it always without fail wants to perform an update. im honestly convinced that they intentionally have your browser malfunction to force you to upgrade.
>open your task manager next time to see if your RAM usage is at 100%.
It usually disappears so quickly I don't have time to check, so I guess I need some program to run while I'm playing. It's not constant framedrops but more like occasional freezing that lasts for a second.
if you have a second monitor, just have your task manager up for a day or so until you can see whats going on.
My firefox takes a huge shit whenever I tune into a vtuber with a crazy fast chat. What in the youtube chat is breaking my firefox?
So basically from what I gather is that Youtube makes Firefox shit itself now?
Youtube makes everything shit itself now
Is it just on certain versions of Firefox that it shits the bed? Because I haven't had do that, but I also don't tend to have that many tabs open at any one time.
With extensions you can switch back to h264 codec, it uses less resources.
You can also install Unhook to remove a lot of the web page bloat.
Just watch from mpv.
youtube used like 50% of my gpu in 1080p until i figured out it was that stupid new "ambient mode"
I've noticed it too. A few tabs open with no videos or media playing and it's hogging up like 60% of my fricking ram
Yup. It's killed my computer twice now.
how much vram do you have?
>30 tabs running over 9000 non essential third-party scripts and have images and video loaded in
Install add-ons that will help tabs not take as much memory, and OFC prevent scripts from running.
