tha path traversal is usually not accounted for in most games and you pretty much expect to navigate the map without major difficulties
death stranding gives a different look at the issue and makes path traversal a core gameplay mechanic, until you unlock ziplines that is

      >tha path traversal is usually not accounted for in most games and you pretty much expect to navigate the map without major difficulties
You mean in open world games? Because survival horror like old RE games require you to plan your route and navigate around locked paths.

        >So in Death Stranding all you do is carry packages?
        No.
        >What's the appeal?
        Engaging, cozy, fun gameplay.
        Stellar atmosphere.

DS has that too, but he's talking about different kind of path traversal. In majority of all other vidya, your character just floats on top of the terrain.

In DS, every single step matters, every single rock and nook is a potential threat. You need to pay attention and plan not only your macro-level route and loadout, but also micromanage your steps on the field, sometimes quite literally.

I guess it's hard to judge it from gameplay videos alone and it's something that has to be experienced? Because all I see is a dude walking forward. Is there any other game like it? Assassin's Creed maybe?

            Anonymous

No, why would Assassins' Creed be like it? You can just pirate the game to just make your own opinion, you know?

            >it's something that has to be experienced?
Yes. Like every single VIDEO GAME ever made.
I guess that's a foreign concept to casual GenZ generation, who've been born 'n raised by movie shit that definitely give you exactly what you see.

            >Is there any other game like it?
            No.

            >AssCreed
            FRICK NO.
Do not compare DS to any sort of Ubishit.

The closest comparison points might be Resident Evil 1 (97), MGSV and Breath Of The Wild. And as you can see, those are some totally different animals altogether.

so ubisoft towers: the game. this isn't unique or fun and I'm tired of kojimbo and his drones treating it like it is.

            Wrong on every note.
I don't get where you kids get such ideas from, and why you're being so narrow minded and prejudiced in general.

Give it a shot. I personally found it to be one of the most addicting video games in decades.

        That's extremely unlikely to happen.
The game is more compact and guided than you seem to think. It is still a lot about that survival on the go + helping the civilization rebuild in order to make the job easier for yourself and the others around the world.

      >until you unlock ziplines that is
one of my main issues with the game. same with highways. and considering kojima doubled down hard on mechanics and tools that trivialise gameplay in the directors cut I really have to assume that he wasn't confident in the game he made.

I really really doubt ds2 will have anywhere near the same kind of gameplay. I think he even said that much after ds1 release when asked if he would make a sequel.

Basically. I made a lot of my own fun by engaging with MULE camps and killing the frick out of BT's and purging BT riddled zones for a bit. I listened to a lot of music while I drove back and forth delivering random bullshit. Occasional podcast. The story is standard nutso Kojima fare so if you like that crap it's a wonderful bonus.

It's an adventure game, with a new genre installed into its core gameplay called Strand. Basically, you create relationships across the map that correspond with each other, each new Strand you create connects another, opening up new porter locations and depots. The point of the game is to raise as much awareness about your potential as a porter as possible, and the only way to do that is to deliver the packages on time.

By delivering packages you can meet cool celebrities like Conan O'Brien, Junji Ito and Edgar Wright. You can't really "die," in the basic expression of the word, Game Over only occurs when you quit the game, but if you fail to deliver packages, your overall rating will go down. As this is an open-world game, trying to restore your rating with over 100+hours of traversable map is going to be hard.

No you don't actually use any cartography in the game. The map doesn't expand at all. It's all available to you at the start of each new area. The only waypoints on the map are the ones you create. Like a Bridge, or a Catapult, or a Rope, or a Ladder (all of which are Chiral-powered with blue LED's on them).

If the boss fights were good I'd agree with you, but Kojima bosses are nowhere near as good as they used to be in MGS1-3 era, then they took a step down in 4, but still had some standout moments, and then 5 was just awful in the boss department and same for DS

You can also engage in not very good third person combat and make the process of carrying packages somehow more tedious by making it easier with roads and ziplines. Exploring an area for the first time by foot is kind of engaging but beyond that the game just gets boring

It's like a slightly more action heavy Euro Truck Simulator
DS-gays will give me shit for it (muh atmosphere) but I usually just slap on a podcast and complete deliveries.
I think it's mostly a failure in terms of making traversal engaging. There is one section in the mountaineering chapter of the game where the game reaches its full potential and requires using pitons, ladders, etc but for the most part it's brainless.
I'm hoping Death Stranding 2 doubles down on the traversal mechanics and we get proper rock climbing but I suspect it's going to be more action heavy than the original.

Bought it on release back then
Its a lot of walking involved, sure, but you don't get bombared by random morons screaming into your ear.
Most of the fun is from traversing the environment or planning ahead, like "I could take route A but that has BTs so I'll have to be stealthier, or take route B which takes longer and requires me to carry a bit more gear, like a ladder or two."
Combat is pretty simple and you're really not supposed to KILL anyone. Its self-explanatory as to why.
Honestly, call it autism, I built roads immediatly when I could to make my life easier.
Snow mountain was some kino shit, especially not having BB with you, so you don't know where BTs are except when its too late. . Aside from that, BB starts growing to you, and the Mads fights were pretty cool setpieces. WW1, WW2 and Vietnam.

Its not a game for everyone, but those who have that sorta 'tism will feel right at home. Its how not everyone will play Eurotruck Simulator, but the few that do, really enjoy it.

tl;dr some games just arent meant for you anon, and its best to keep looking instead of anchoring yourself to a game that isn't for you.

If it actually forced you to create cool bridges along buildings and jump over hazards like craters or deep water, or rarpel down buildings and sneak inside interiors it would be fun. But none of that happens, you run along flat boring surfaces with nothing going on for the most part.
The concept is there, the actual content isnt.
Its dumb because the first time you reat capital knot city and you go through an alley in a city thinking there's going to be desolated civilization you have to go through and then quickly realise its just that bit.
The game consists on different biomes, grass, snow, swamp, desert. They all offer the same boring plain atmosphere.
I had most fun jumping around container at the docks in Port Knot than actually playing the game. Like the game has bridges that are not an integral part of the game, infact you actually have to put in effort to get on top of them which makes it completely avoidable.

Imagine a delivery that takes place on that area with buildings and is guarded by MULEs. Your objective is to get on to the top of them to locate and retrieve a package. Then you gotta sneak your way down or you could just rappel down and walk to your deatination.
Kojima is a fricking moron and doesnt know wtf he is doing. He just wants to make a walking sim to unlock cut-scenes to tell a story because he would never survive on film industry. I don't want to sneak to the top of a building. This isn't Metal Gear.

By that time you finished the game and connected everything. It's better than endless backtracking because you actually get to optimize your routes and conquer the map. The help from other players is just a cherry on top. Kojima is a genius.

That doesnt mean Death Stranding could not use these small segments of sealth encounters with the enemy. Maybe the buildings have enemies but outside its completely empty. It would have more variety besides just walking across the map.

90% of the game is backtracking unless you only played mandatory missions.

Not just this but also more diversity and difficulty to traverse the map. The game is too easy and just not worth playing online ( player's constructions ruin the game ).

    >So in Death Stranding all you do is carry packages?
yes, in a variety of ways while also avoiding hazards
    >What's the appeal?
Pushing your limits to make the largest deliveries possible. From carry a heavy, tagging along a line of floating carts, to large-scale truck delivery that cross the entire map from the roads you help fund with resources

I just realized DS is similar to when I want to take the groceries into the house but only in one trip.

i swear my mom always would say "you'll have to make a few trips" when unloading the groceries when I was a kid just because she knew i would take it as a challenge and load 10 bags up onto my arms and make it one trip.

Here's another pseud who thinks he's better than everyone for indulging himself with kojimbo's moronic story and characters.
I played the game and watched everything and the strongest emotion I felt was embarrassment.

          >I played the game and watched everything and the strongest emotion I felt was embarrassment.
Kek same. The whole game is embarrassing, it feels like theres no actual human dialogue, just robots handing out lore dumping with npc-tier emotions, I mean Mads was okay I guess but everyone else just didnt exist

What's incredible is how the weirdness of the characters is exposed the more humans they get. Emotional scenes are off, like if the script was written by an alien or an autist.
I don't understand why people on youtube praise that scene with hardman or whatever crying. It comes out of nowhere, the connection between the characters aren't believable. Only Sam is kinda endearing because he's embracing the weirdness of the setting with his aloofness, his misanthropic nature and all that.
Kojima needs pro writers to help him but he's too much of a diva to accept the help.

Literally every single character is some sort of a weirdo. Metal Gear was like that too.

Somehow, after 30 hours of him barking orders and being a cold & stoic man, him opening up to Sam still feels uncanny and it looks stupid. Maybe women are right

He is a Sam's commander and knows that bursting into treats while his subordinate is in the middle of a mission isn't good for morale. He opens up when the mission is over and Sam has quit.

The game has problems, namely a great setting and gameplay premise wasted on what is essentially just Kojima's attempt to make a meaningless narrative seem deep and having an obsessive need to marry gameplay with narrative. The premise of an online "Strand" interaction mechanic would work, if the player would have any meaningful reason to interact with it outside of what is essentialy crowd funding infrastructure and delivering lost packages. On one hand, the connections thing is neat, on another it devalues from the qualities the game would have had with larger amount of curated content like exploring Timefall ruined cities and chiral structures or otherwise adding more depth to both the combat system and delivery mechanics. Now the game is essentially just an exercise in tedium that had S.T.A.L.K.E.R levels of potential, all squandered in what is essentially a very large gambit of a new IP. If Kojima can pull his head out of his ass, the second game can live up to that potential, if it can take 100% of the juice out of it's setting and core gameplay.
